    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    CPU: Intel Core i5-2400

My pc has just been making a lot of noise recently and was wondering what was wrong with it. It has a Fan speed of 33280 rpm but I do not know if this is normal or not. However, if it is not normal are there any solutions on how to fix it?

I screwed up big time and didn't realise my CPU fan wasn't connected after bringing it to a friend's house for disassembling. I ran it for 3-4 hours just for internet browsing. Is there anything I should do?

What's your biggest annoyance/pet-peeve when it comes to building a PC?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:27 PM PDT

Hey guys - wondering if I could ask a couple questions and get a couple answers.

I'm thinking about building an app that is sort of like a playbook/cookbook for building a PC, for people who want to just quickly get a breakdown of that perfect recipe based on their price point and just create a quick, fun, awesome experience for people. Of course, hardware would be filtered by price and other specifications, but the whole point is something that you can kind of just "swipe right" on against a range of options based on your $ and other resources.

The options would be uploaded from other users who have built their PC, and they would maybe receive likes/points for uploading their unique hardware "recipe". For your next build, save a bunch of time and possibly money with total hardware packages and links to sale items, all within a clean user interface.

Anyways, I don't want to assume too much. I'd like to hear your input.

*Question*: What has been your biggest annoyance or pet peeve when it comes time to build/update your computer hardware? Imagine you're sitting there with nothing, and from scratch you have to research/buy/build, etc.

    Thanks

Thermal paste IN the CPU and GPU. This is fine.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:12 AM PDT

Three years ago, I was buying this little ASUS Rog laptop so I could have a little something to bring with me during my vacations or whatever opportunities to let my battle station have some rest while I'm doing stuff somewhere. And so far, this little fellow was doing his job. The warranty being over and the little bud being somewhat hot, I've recently decided it was finally time to break it open and clean up the fan, as well as the old (and kinda dried) thermal paste (then replacing it with my almighty Grizzly Kryonaut).

Well, it was the first time I was digging the insides of a laptop, but I was under the assumption that it could not be any more alien or complicated than my regular tower. Sacrebleu, I was wrong. What in the damn baguette is this :

    https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/30/4/1532604914-howthef.jpg

How in earth am I supposed to clean up the old thermal paste if part of the said thermal paste is freakin IN the CPU and GPU ? What in the world was the young underpaid asian slave thinking while doing such a thing ?

    https://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/30/4/1532604914-howthefr.jpg

On a more serious tone, here I am with thermal paste in some shady location. According to you, how heavy will this impact the whole thermal transfer and what can I do to deal with it as best as I can ? Merci

EDIT : Several kind gentlemen have answered my concerns regarding this merde. And I've learned that there is always paste on top of the packages. This was a productive thread to me. Thanks !

    i7 8700k showing 1.4v at 4.7 ghz

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 03:12 PM PDT

    Hello,

I was looking to overclock my i7 8700k to stay at 4.7 ghz all cores. I was following a tutorial, and the person said that if you were only going for a safe 4.7 ghz overclock, it was ok to just set the multiplier to 47x and leave everything else alone. Being new to overclocking, I decided that was probably best. For stability tests, I opened up CPU-Z and ran Prime 95. Every time I did so, I saw the voltage hitting 1.408v. From my research, I gathered that 1.4v was not ideal, especially when I haven't entered a significant overclock. Did I just really lose the silicon lottery really, really badly? Or did I mess up something else?

    CPU: i7 8700k

    Mobo: Asus ROG Striz Z370-E

    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH D15

Edit: Voltage is currently on auto, should I change that? If so, any tutorial recommendations on how to go about this?

Trying to upgrade a computer I recieved from work - Unsure if it has an expansion slot for a GPU or if one will even fit. Would love some advice where possible! (with pictures)

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 03:00 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, I'm pretty bad with technology so could ideally use some advice. I got to take a computer from work when we moved office and was hoping I could stick a small GPU in it to run some less VRAM intensive games.

Its a Lenovo 90fn (recent i5 and 8GB DDR4 RAM) and as you can see from the pictures in the link below, it has what looks like a GPU expansion slot (although I could be wrong).I tried to look up some info on this and motherboards in general but couldn't find anything helpful and got very lost. If this is the case, there isn't a lot of room to fit one, so I would love to hear advice or suggestions! (also if necessary I don't mind 'modifying' the case to make something fit)

Also, if this is the wrong place to post this please let me know and I'll take it down.

    Ryzen2 chip, ITX/M-ATX board to replace I5 4680k?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:56 PM PDT

Looking for suggestions for my upgrade, gifting my nephew my haswell chip and board. I will only game on the system. I'm looking at modern AAA games and want a CPU that will not have any bottleneck with my GPU.

I currently have a EVGA 1080 FTW2 and will be gaming on a 1440/144 monitor. These are the only 2 items that are set for this build.

I want a m-ATX or ITX board, as I want a smaller form factor case for my setup. I need a slot for my single videocard, preferably 4 memory dimms with the ability to support 3200 DDR4, and a heavy duty VRM Heatsink. I want the ability to mildly to moderately overclock and not worry if the board is going to holdup to the heat. I don't need anymore features than this, as I use it to game.

I'm thinking of going with the 2600 or 2600x, but haven't really researched this much as my nephew dropped that he was saving up for a system to play fortnight.

So, for gaming, are there any great sub ATX sized x470 boards? Don't care about RGB or aesthetics, just ability to support 3200 DDR4, a 16x graphics card connector, and proper heatsink. Anything more is fine but unneeded.

Is the 2600/2600x overkill for gaming?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

    PC Gaming Desk

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:47 AM PDT

Hi PC friends! Need a suggestions on a desk. Maybe some of you have the problem I have. I'm short.. 5'6 (5'7 if my docs are on) . Most desks are too tall for me and lets not get into raising the chair. .I like my feet touching the ground. The height of the desk I have is 29" inches. I was wondering if anyone uses a lower desk. I was struggling to find one. The only one I could really find is the IKEA Bekant that can is height adjustable to 25" inches. Just wanted to know if anyone has a lower desk and what the model is

    PC No Longer Booting

    Troubleshooting Help:

**What is your parts list? PCPartPicker part list](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9dJXWZ) / Price breakdown by merchant

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

A week ago, my PC randomly shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, it worked for a minute and shut down again. Now when I turn it on, it instantly cuts back off, and I cannot try to turn it back on until I reset the power supply.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

At first I tried to replace the motherboard, no change. Slowly removed parts to see if they were the problem. First DVD, then video recording card, system fans, hard drives, and video card. The motherboard also does not post long enough to get a error code.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Need some upgrade help, not been keeping up with the tech

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:32 PM PDT

Hey all, I built my first PC about 5 years ago now and I'm looking at upgrading but I really haven't followed any developments in the tech so I've no idea how behind I am.

    My current rig is

    Graphics: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 WindForce 3x OC 2048MB GDDR5 GX-115-GI

CPU: AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz

    MotherBoard: Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX

Power Supply: SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold"

    RAM: TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit

    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache

Case: Xigmatek Alfar Midi Tower Case - BlackWhite

and I think I also got a cheapish fan a little while later I cannot remember the name of. When purchased this cost around £750 (I'm in the UK)

I want something more powerful, primarily for gaming at a budget of around £800 but I could push it up if necessary. I prefer to game at 60fps and my monitor resolution is 1920x1080, basically just want the best performance possible for my budget.

Is it worth upgrading what I have? Should I try and pull a few parts out but mostly be building something new or should I just start from scratch? I'd appreciate any direction you guys can offer

Also as a side note, I've noticed some sites are pushing the idea of speccing something out and having them build it, how much extra does this tend to cost??

    Cheers

    Newegg Scam ?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:41 PM PDT

Shortly after ordering my components on newegg I received an email from "Newegg Marketplace Seller - World Digital Store" with the subject "Newegg Marketplace Order #328861883" which is very close to some of my order numbers but not actually one of them . (they must choose a recent order # for the scam ).

Email reads: " Hello, I'm sorry for the trade war between China and the United States. The customs return the package. Now we cancel the order and refund. Then we send the product through other channels. When you receive the product, will you pay us again?

    "

I just responded "cancel the order" before realizing it was most likely a scam. Sounded shady either way. If you're ordering parts look out for this. There is one item that hasn't shipped yet and is in China but the order number is different...I canceled that order as well & got it from a different vendor since it's been pending for days. Maybe I'm paranoid but that all seems strange
