    Laptops 13in VS 15in

    Laptops 13in VS 15in

    13in VS 15in

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 11:44 AM PDT

As an incoming freshmen I'm looking for a laptop to buy for college. But I can't make my mind up on size. I have an XPS in mind but I wanna know from other more experienced students what they think about the size?

Is a 15in too big for desks in class? Is a 13in too small to work on for long periods of time? Is the weight difference something to take into consideration?

Any discussion on size difference is appreciated

Looking for a cheap WoW laptop, two contenders...

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:12 PM PDT

Hey, my 2012 MacBook Pro is chugging playing WoW and I wanted an upgrade, but I can't spend Mac money again. Saw Best Buy is having a Black Friday in July sale - and two laptops stood out as contenders. They're very similar but it sounds like the Dell might have more memory, it lists a 128GB and 256GB drive in the comparison chart, but the Acer has USB-C. Anyone have advice on these two machines? Or a third one that may be better? $600-700 is my budget preferably, haven't bought a windows laptop in forever. Thank you!

Is 4k worth it on a 15" screen for gaming only?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 07:23 AM PDT

    So I can get a 4k 60hz screen or a 1080p with 120hz.

Would I notice the difference in quality in graphics with the 1080p screen? Or would the 4k blow it away?

Or can you not even see the difference?

I'm talking about in games only.

    Thanks

Hey guys, just bought this laptop for school. I am a Computer Science major and was just wanting to know if there were any useful apps and softwares I should be running. What virus and malware protections I should run and just different helpful things to keep everything running smoothly. Dell - 2-in-1 13.3" Touch-Screen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 - 12GB Memory - AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 - 256GB Solid State Drive

Advise on buying laptop, nvidia < 4.5lbs, 32gb ram

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:36 PM PDT

I'm interested in upgrading my work laptop. I do machine learning so I have a hard requirement for an nvidia gpu. I'd like the computer to support upgrading the ram upto 24gb or 32gb of ram (I probably won't buy the laptop with this installed as it'd be more expensive than upgrading it myself).

Most everything else I'm flexible on. I'd like an i7 processor, >= 512gb ssd, usb 3.0.

The odd requirement is that it should be < 4.5 lbs as that is what my 2012 macbook weighs and I'd like something modern and lighter.

    Any help appreciated!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 3,000 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. good battery life, best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? weight is important, thinness not so much

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. deep learning, with nvidia gpu

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? usb 3.0

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking for a business professional laptop on the outside, beast on the inside.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 07:30 AM PDT

Not interested in the rainbow LED lighted keyboards, gimmicky marketing. Gaming isn't a top priority but having the capability / power would be nice. (Running some older games like Half Life 2, maybe CSGO at an admirable framerate for example)

Also not looking for the thinnest design. If it has weight / thickness due to multiple fans, that's fine(and honestly preferred with how warm some of these laptops run).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, places to start researching etc.!

Subreddits like this one are awesome and super helpful!

Looking to buy this laptop, and I need your feedback.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:27 PM PDT

I saw this deal today at Staples and I was wondering if the specs on this are decent: https://www.staples.com/ideapad-330-81de00lcus-15-6-laptop-computer-intel-i3-128gb-ssd-8gb-ddr4-windows-10-home/product_24328358

Processor is dual core, but 8th gen i3. Mainly going to use the laptop to watch Netflix, browse, MS Office, and very light gaming.

Would this computer be ideal for my needs? Thanks in advance!

Lenovo T580 vs. HP Elitebook G5 vs. HP Zbook 15 G4

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:41 PM PDT

So I have a choice between the 3 above laptops.

I'm unsure what to go for. The real difference is that the Zbook comes ith 8Gb extra RAM & an Intel Core i7-7820HQ vPRO

However, the T580 and Elitebook have a newer Intel Core i5-8350U vPRO .

So would the newer i5 processor keep up with an older i7?

What do you guys & gals think?

Power usage, and price is not an issue here either.

HP ENVY 13 with lower variant of MX150?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:30 PM PDT

So recently I received my HP ENVY 13 (3EN03AV_1). I did a bit of research and came across a couple of articles that stated some of these laptops in particular came with the weaker variant of MX150 graphics card ID as "1D12". And after doing a gpu tech review it appears it does come with the "1D12". I'm just wondering if I got screwed over because they don't specified which version you get while ordering on the HP website. Do they sell these laptops with stronger variant of the MX150 "ID10"? Or do they all come come with the "1D12" due to these computer being ultrabooks?

Looking for a new laptop !

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:10 PM PDT

Hello everyone, first time posting in this sub. So Im looking for a new laptop and I was hoping for some recommandations here. I usually use the computer for 2-3 hours a day at least, maybe even more on weekends (continuous use). Not a gamer, but I use Photoshop and other illustration software (not frequently). For the screen, 13-15". I don't want a laptop too heavy because I may bring it around (2kg max). Good battery life is a plus (at least 5-6h). I would also want it to last a while (Im on my 5th year with the old one). My budget is 500-1000. No need for touch screen or anything fancy. That's it for my needs. Thanks for having read my post and I can't wait for the recon :)

Will a Yoga 710 14" (Used for $250) be enough for a college student?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 11:37 AM PDT

    Someone is selling a Lenovo Yoga 710 (8gb ram ddr3, i5-6200U, 256gb SSD, 14 inch FHD display) for $250.

Only gimics is that he says its 3 years old.

Would this laptop be enough for 4 years or at least most the time in college?

(I'll hopefully be buying a mITX PC to go along with it too since I'll have the money)

Or would it be better to just buy a brand new laptop?

EDIT: Or go even cheaper and get a chromebook?

Are Core-Ms adequate for 4k Displays?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 10:32 AM PDT

Will the 6y75 be adequate for 4k browsing duties? I am upgrading from a 5y75 1st gen Core-M that worked excellent with a 1080p display. I like the Core-M fanless ultrabooks and don't want to go to a 15w CPU unless the core-m is just tanked by a 4k display.

Warranty more than 30 days after purchase of laptop

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 07:46 AM PDT

Does anyone know of a warranty I can get covering a laptop I bought more than 30 days ago? I bought a surface book 2 a few months ago (it is in great condition with no issues) and in order to be reimbursed for the computer by my company I have to have a two year warranty on it.

But I can't find any warranties that cover computer purchased more than 30 or 45 days ago.

I know extended warranty are usually a rip-off and that it's better to rely on the manufacturer warranty, your credit card and retailer return policy. But it still makes sense to get it here so that I can get my $2500 laptop reimbursed.

Some Cheap Laptop For Home User

Wondering what laptop I should get...

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:18 AM PDT

I'm gonna study computer science and I wanted to buy the MacBook. I like it for its ecosystem and I thought it was a fast laptop. But the specs are low for its price. For 1500 I could also buy a laptop with better specifications. I don't want to game or edit media on it, but I'm scared that the MacBook has problems or is too slow compared to a windows alternative? I have heard that MacBook last longer than a windows laptop and that their overall build qui alité is very well.
