Is this Punch Down Ok? (Patch Panel) Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:31 PM PDT First time doing a punch down. It went ok...but I know there is a big deal about keeping the twists. My main concerns are:
Also...do you just cut off that little rubber X in the middle of cat 6 Im assuming? It's not supposed to follow up anywhere right? [link] [comments] |
WNDR3400 Router and ADT Gateway Causing Double NAT/ Internet Issues Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:18 PM PDT So this is what I have. Two Xboxes One box will say Open Nat and work okay, 2nd xbox will say double NAT /strict and work not so great. This all fluctuates depending on which Xbox is turned on first and what not. The internet setup is a satellite type dish receiving a signal and it being run to the WAN port of a WNDR3400 router. Then off of a port of that router connects to an ADT Netgear Pulse box on the broadband slot. I contacted ADT as I cant find hardly any documentation on setup and they said this is how it is supposed to be setup. I believe the ADT box is causing the double nat but I can't even get into it (gives me a connection error/timeout) when trying to connect to its IP address. I can get into the WNDR3400 pretty easily and it seems setup correctly. Other devices seemed to be mildly impacted by it (WIFI phones/ipads) but it is most noticeable on the Xboxes. I am concerned about doing a hard reset on the ADT gateway pulse box as it has the wires running to it from the security system and I am not sure what specific settings ADT programs into it. I have searched the internet for assistance and am at a loss as to my next step. [link] [comments] |
Cannot connect any more devices Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:33 PM PDT I have a well connected home with Nest products, WiFi cameras, Kevo locks etc. For some reason I can not connect any more devices to my 2.4 GHz network. Most (if not all) of the smart devices in the house will only connect on 2.4 GHz. To get around the issue I had been having other devices (iPads, phones, etc) use the 5 GHz network but it seems I've run out of "space" on my 2.4 network. Why is that?!?! I have a pricey router (Nighthawk X6 R8000) that has great range but I didn't ever think about having this issue. Is there ANY way around it? A setting or workaround? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:01 PM PDT Hello all, I recently purchased a AC86U and successfully set up aimesh to my existing AC68U (node). I have it wired LAN to WAN, AC86U to AC68U respectively. And for some crazy reason I have crappy wifi coverage now. I have reset both routers and set them up 3 times, same outcome. Before I had the AC68U and AC66U with different ssids and had great coverage. Anyone have any ideas? tia [link] [comments] |
Computer randomly connect to an unknown router Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:56 PM PDT I hope this is the right place to ask as im currently experiencing issues on my home network which have me very concerned. I am not particularly network savvy so I would like to get a second opinion on what could be occurring. So i currently have a netgear D7000 setup as my modem/router, my internet is shared between my family so we have multiple devices connected to the WiFi. Recently some of our devices have had connection issues and internet dropouts. After looking into a bit further i realized that the devices that were having issues were connected to a different default gateway. The netgear router's default gateway ends in 0.1 and the devices with the issues were connected to a default gateway ending in 1.1 It turns out that its a Huawei HG659 which i dont recognize. Now its fairly random as to which devices end up on that network, sometimes its my computer which is plugged into the D7000 with an Ethernet cable, sometimes its my laptop or mobile phone which are on the WiFi. Im really confused as to why this could be happening and would like some assistance to find out why im having these issues. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:52 PM PDT Here is my setup: Modem -> Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX ERX -> Ubiquiti AP ERX -> Switch Switch -> Multiple wall ports Recently, I got a new modem, which is when my troubles started. I hooked it up, and now none of the wall ports connected to the switch work. The AP works fine. On the ERX : eth0 is WAN IN eth1-4 are set up as a switch with DHCP (I used the WAN + 2LAN2 wizard). Sounds like a switch problem right? However, I can't reach the internet even when my PC is connected directly to the ERX. Why would this be if the AP and all devices connected to it work fine? I'm at a loss :(. Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Large Coverage area consumer vs. commercial Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:12 PM PDT I have a 1900 square foot house, but its really long in one direction so at the back of the house and our (small) backyard phones struggle to keep a solid connection on Wifi. My laptop (last year mac book pro) does an OK but not great job. I want to get to a point where wifi just works in the back yard and across the house. I'd like my gaming (occasional) network to not be impacted, currently my PS4 sits ~20 feet from the wifi router. My question is: There are consumer grade routers that have mesh technology. I could use those, but my office has commercial grade equipment and with admittedly some setup from the IT staff it "just works" with multiple APs, flawlessly. A lot of the better consumer gear is getting into the 200-400 dollar range, would it be dumb to consider commercial level components for quality? I could buy a friend beers to get help sorting a commercial setup out if needed, but I can do the basics. [link] [comments] |
Is it time to update my router and/or modem? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:51 PM PDT I have Xfinity Performance Tier in Washington D.C. and Comcast claims it's rated at 60 Mbps download. When I'm within the same room as the wireless router I'm getting ~25 Mbps, while upstairs I'm getting 3-5 Mbps -- both according to Speedtest.net. According to XFinity's speed test I'm getting 35 Mbps. We live in a two story row home so it's relatively small, ~1200 sq ft. We have numerous devices connected at any given time, including 2-3 laptops, 2-3 iPhones, a Roku, a Nest thermostat, and an Arlo wireless camera system. I bought my modem and router together in 2013 and I'm wondering if it's time to upgrade / update? My cable modem is a Cisco DPC3008 My wireless router is a Cisco Linksys E2500 Advanced Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router [link] [comments] |
Slow WiFi Speeds on Desktop (Other Devices are fine) Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:36 PM PDT Hey, so recently after a lightning strike near my house, the ethernet ports on my router have stopped working. So until a new router arrives I'm stuck using WiFi on my main gaming PC. For some reason this specific desktop gets terrible speeds and is unbearable to use, other devices however such as my phone (Moto x Play) are completely fine. I was hoping someone could help me diagnose the issue and potentially resolve it, I don't know anything about network cards and settings, so any advice is much appreciated. The network card on the desktop is: ASUS PCE-N15 11n Wireless LAN PCI-E Card - I get 7 download/6 upload but very unstable. The other device is my phone: Moto x Play - I get 46 download/6 upload Edit: In my device manager I have "Miniports", could these be an issue? https://i.imgur.com/B1nnO0P.png [link] [comments] |
ASUS RT-AC68U and Gigabit Internet Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:15 PM PDT I recently upgraded to Comcasts gig internet since it was the best option for the price; however, my AC68U seems to struggle with delivery of the service. Directly connected to the modem I get speed test results from 960 to 1030 Mb, but when connected to the router I get 520 to 605 Mb. On the router, I have ensured that QoS was disabled as well as several other features, but I cannot nail it down. The best recommendation that I have found was to revert to a much older version of the merlin firmware (380.69), which I am not too fond of given many of the security related updates. I was hoping maybe someone here had an idea of what I could do? I have considered the expensive route of going with a Ubiquiti setup, but that is still rather expensive. [link] [comments] |
Wired Internet Connection over Coax? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:08 PM PDT Can I connect to the internet via ethernet/coax? I have a desktop PC in my office that struggles to pick up the wifi from our Surfboard modem/router in the living room. The modem/router in the living room is connected to a coax and there is another coax in the office. I had the modem/router connected to the coax in my office initially which worked, but then our TV struggled to connect consistently, so we moved it. Any solutions for a wired connection in the office? [link] [comments] |
Thoughts on current brands of networking products? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:55 PM PDT So I'm currently looking for a cheap bridge to connect an ethernet only receiver to my network (recommendations appreciated, but not actually the subject of this post) and, realizing I haven't actually bought any networking products in a looong time was wondering what the general consensus (if there is such a thing) on quality networking brands is? Looking on amazon, some of the top rated stuff is from companies I've never heard of (MSRM?). It used to be that there was basically just D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, and a few others. Are there really new players, or is it just cheap garbage with fake reviews? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:29 PM PDT I'm going to run a shielded cat 7 cable across my apartment and at one point it will pass the circuit breaker/electrical panel. I'm concerned that there's going to be a lot of interference (beyond the included shielding) so I wasn't sure if copper Emi shielding tape was also necessary. It's for a gigabit internet connection is that makes a difference. What do you all think? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jul 2018 12:44 AM PDT So, the ISP gives a coaxial cable which goes into splitter which then goes into a TV decoder, (which works just fine) and the other split goes into a cable modem (Cisco) which is pretty good, and then the ethernet cables go into 1) a tp-link wireless, and 2) my desktop. The ISP when called, says everything is fine on their end, and in the one step above the coaxial which I mentioned. Now I don't want to call the cable guy over, if i can figure out where the problem is. Sometimes this means a page won't load for a while, youtube streams work almost well, but i know how annoying it would be for the cable guy to show up, and everything would be working 100%, like it did last night. I'd include an image but imgur is giving a hard time, so here's how the ping to Google.lv looks like... sorry. Request timed out. Looking for an Wireless Access Point with a PoE switch Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:54 AM PDT I'm looking to have a Wireless access point (that can be plugged in) Such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-WA901ND-Wireless-Access-Point/dp/B013HCO332/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=9XX9K2YA9A5T1NAX42YS But with a 4 port switch with PoE on the rear. VLANs and QoS aren't important here, but would be beneficial. Gigabit on the LAN would be good but not really needed. I've tried googling but I'm getting PoE AP's mainly. [link] [comments] |
Dealing with Cable Bends and Cable Excess Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:31 AM PDT So this is a 2 part question:
Sidenote: A Few Switches/Modem/Router shouldn't have any issue in a normal bedroom closet right? (As far as HEAT is concerned) The closet isn't air tight but doesn't have a fan or a AC vent (the room it's attached to does of course though). [link] [comments] |
Higher ping after internet speed upgrade Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:42 AM PDT Just recently upgraded my Comcast cable internet speed from 150/20 Mbps to 250/20 Mbps. Also changed my old Docsis 3.0 Motorola SB6141 cable modem to a newer Docsis 3.1 CM8200A cable modem. Averaging 275/23 Mbps (peak at 290/23 Mbps) on speed test using an Asus RT-AC86U router with OpenVPN client (ON) & QoS (OFF) connected to IPVanish VPN network. I've also noticed that I'm pinging higher on every speed test servers & doubled the ping (from around 30-32 to 60-63) on a regional game server I'm normally connected into when gaming. Any reason why? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:37 AM PDT I have Xfinity Gigabit with my own SB8200 modem. For the past month and almost on a daily basis, my Internet would drop until I go to the xfinity app and reboot my device and then it works again. Seems to happen at least once daily. Several Comcast calls and no issues there. Even had a tech test the signal. Anyone know of issues with SB8200? Thinking of switching to the Moto unit instead and giving that a try. Looking for input on how to test network Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:50 AM PDT in my house, I have all Cat 5e. I am looking to upgrade some of my hardware (both boxes connected to the network and various switches and my cable router). But, before all of that, I would like to be able to "typify" (not sure if that is the right word) how things are right now. I would like to be able to do speed tests between various devices (both wired and wireless) to see if there are any bottlenecks, but I have no idea where to start. If there are any other good tests, please let me know those as well. I really want to get good at my home networking, but I know I have a lot to learn. Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:43 AM PDT I'm searching for a new home router and have been looking at ASUS, Netgear, and even Google. Google WiFi seems to be pretty limited in features/interface, so I'm leaning against it. I've heard awesome things about the ASUS interface, and AiMesh is intriguing since we'll be moving to a larger home in a couple of years. RT-AC68U looks like a great router, but I'm worried about buying something that was introduced five years ago. Enter the Cave. The Blue Cave, to be exact. On paper, it checks all the boxes. Good coverage, great interface, four gigabit ports, AiMesh-capable, Time Machine compatible, etc. So I'd like to hear from those that have a Blue Cave or have tried one. Thanks in advance! Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:24 AM PDT Is there a way that I can purchase MOCA 2.5 adapters? I see that they were released in January (to providers only), but I can't seem to find any online. [link] [comments] |
Have Gigabyte Coax, but moving to symmetrical fiber in a couple months - Same gear okay? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:19 AM PDT I currently have a gigabyte coax connection and it doesn't extend to the back of my home as the router/modem is in the front of the house near my PC. I'd like to keep that in the same place, but use a mesh network or the likes to extend my wifi to the back of the house. I've been apprehensive to buy anything as Im struggling to familiarize myself with home networking, even though I've been reading this sub for a while. So, I was wondering if purchasing the gear now will be fine as the max DL speed won't be changing, just the upload. And also, I'd gladly take any recommendations on gear and would love not to have to hard wire an extension into a bedroom if it's not necessary. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Weird issue with ASUS RT-AC68U?? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:19 AM PDT Hi, I have recently purchased an ASUS RT-AC68U home router and I set it up and it worked perfectly. However, whenever I go into the WAN settings and click apply it no longer works as can be seen in this image. I don't actually have to make any changes to the WAN settings. I just have to click the apply button. I've taken a screenshot of the log here but don't know what any of this means. The only way that I can get it working again is to do a factory reset. Also, as a side note this was doing this on the latest stock ASUS firmware so I tried the ASUS Merlin firmware and it does the same thing. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Is WiFi really that bad, or do I need a new wireless router? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:24 AM PDT I moved into a new apartment that offers gigabit fiber. There is one of those "modem and router" combo devices built-in. I signed up for 1,000 Mbps, set up my wireless connection, tested it, and got.... 150 Mbps. Womp. I did some testing, including making sure I was on 5 Ghz, AC was enabled, stood right in front of the router, etc. Best I got was 450 Mbps. I finally tested it over ethernet, and got 940 Mbps. Seems wifi is the culprit. Is wifi really that bad? Or is the included router perhaps just very poor? If I bought a new one, could I expect faster speeds? [link] [comments] |
