    Convert telephone module to cat5?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:58 PM PDT

Hi all, I moved into a new house and I wanted to see how I can use the pre-existing telephone module icresvpa3c to convert it to cat5 in each room of the house.

    POE switch?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:40 PM PDT

I currently run 2 ubiq AP pro switches in my house, but I don't like using the POE adapter because I have to run additional wires. Anyone have a recommendation on a switch with POE output to power these two like under 100?

Samsung TV: Ethernet slower than WiFi?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, I did some research on this and couldn't find anything relevant so I thought I'd try my luck here, thanks in advance for any advice.

I have kind of a weird problem with connecting my TV to my internet via Ethernet. I currently have internet through Spectrum, which has become extremely spotty over WiFi with their supplied router (on WiFi I get speeds with highs of around 70Mbps and lows of 0.2Mbps on all of my devices, including my TV, fluctuating randomly. Sometimes it doesn't work at all).

From the beginning I planned on connecting most of my devices with a wired Ethernet connection so I wouldn't have to worry about this. I own a Samsung Q6F TV (Link) and like I said earlier, the WiFi is extremely unreliable, so I bought a cat5e Ethernet cable for it. The weird part is, when connected via Ethernet, it never exceeds 10-20Mbps. In contrast, my desktop PC which is now connected via Ethernet with the same type of cable gets consistent speeds of 110+Mbps with no slowdowns or fluctuations.

Is it possible that the TV just isn't capable of higher wired speeds? Is something configured wrong? I'm at a point where the WiFi is unreliable (but much faster than Ethernet half the time), and the Ethernet connection is much slower than what it should be. Should I just buy a better router (if that would even help)? I just assumed that a wired connection would be best and I wouldn't have to worry about it.

    Thank you.

Trying top find a proper way to "wall mount" two ubiquiti rack devices

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:21 PM PDT

I have two rack mount devices, a router (UniFi Security Gateway 4P) and a switch (UniFi Switch 24 POE-250W), that I would like to install on a wall. But not in a traditional sense.

Instead of having them stacked, I would like to hang them from the wall so that the depth of the device is flush against the wall and the ports are facing upwards (hopefully this makes sense).

I was thinking of using something like this (links to home depot), but I ultimately would like to secure the devices into the brackets (due to potential for earthquakes or if they somehow start to sag and they fall away from the wall), but I can't seem to find a "proper" bracket to do this. Does anyone have any ideas on a way that I could accomplish this or if there is a cheap and sturdy product for this?

    Ethernet wall plate questions

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:35 AM PDT

I am planning to run an ethernet cable from my 2nd floor to my basement through my cold air return duct and want to make sure I'm purchasing the right things:

    1. Wall plate: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07449GM9F/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A130RVB6PSAL46&psc=1

    2. Ethernet cable: I need about 50', do I use a normal patch cable or a cross over cable?

    3. Mounting bracket: https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.1-gang-low-voltage-mounting-bracket--rework.1000162142.html

    Modem & Router Advice

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:08 PM PDT

Lost my nighthawk C7000 to a lightning strike.

Range was poor so would like better range and separate devices.

    I have Comcast 150.

Looking on here it seems Arris 16x4 SB6183 and an AC 1900 like Archer C9 or Nighthawk 1900 (R7000) are what I need to maximize my speeds and range. Does that sound about right?

Connecting 2 Routers with Powerline Adapter

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:08 PM PDT

My 2 routers are connected via powerline adapter and there is an overlap of their coverage area, leading to devices having a weak signal from 1 connection and staying connected rather than connecting to the stronger connection. Is there any way to make both routers the same connection for seamless connecting?

    Bridge mode 2 routers

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:04 PM PDT

    Gear:(Modem/Router - bridge mode enabled) Arris TG1682G

    (Router 1) Netgear x10 R9000 - IP 192.168.1.1(Router 2) Edge Router Lite 3 - IP 192.168.2.1(Switch) Arista 7124sx - to be configured

I recently bought a managed 10G sfp switch to connect all my computers to my file server. Even though my x10 has the ability to enable Vlan, it loses connection to internet everytime i enable vlan and never reconnects. I searched online for help but all i saw was forums of people having the same issue with empty solutions.I decided to stop trying to get my switch to work on my netgear and decided to buy a ERL3.I set up the ERlite but now it can't connect to the internet and now i am stuck and need suggestions on how to troubleshoot this.

I would prefer having two routers, this way i can tinker all i want with the second router with out interrupting my main router and the various people that are connected to it. I got yelled at a lot today for it.

edit: ER cannot get an internet connection, X10 still has connection

    Google Wifi Bad Packet Loss

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:32 AM PDT

This is probably really petty but I paid a-lot of money for the Google Wifi and it isn't that great. Ive tried using the online chat but they just say "Could not help at this time" and they exit. Anyways, I do a bit of gaming. I have my gaming PC in my spare room upstairs wired in with ethernet. Before I had the google WiFi, I was using an ASUS RT-AC68U Router and my ping was average 20ms in CSGO with 0% packet loss. I got a cheap 2 port router that doesn't have wireless, which just connects to the google Wifi(Without the google wifi, I was getting perfect speeds and ping wired directly into the new router) . Since I got the google wifi, my ping averages around 100ms and I get a constant 90%-100% packet loss. I have set my gaming PC to priority, and I don't know what else to do in order to improve this.

I tried creating like a wired layout of my network:
    https://imgur.com/a/hloKXkw

All of the ethernet cables are CAT 5E, and only the main google wifi is plugged in via ethernet.

Any suggestions would be super helpful.

    Thank you

Powerline Adapter for unique rental situation?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 07:14 PM PDT

Our landlady is great. She is providing us with WiFi included in our rent. The house is small. We live in the old "inlaw" apartment, added in the 90's. She has our local ISP's fastest service 100+Mbs. Only problem is our router has to be stationed pretty far away from the apartment. Let's just pretend that there is no chance we can get her to run hardwire into the apartment. We have a pretty high quality router and chose to get a relatively expensive network extender.

It sucks. There must be something in the building materials that is blocking signal. It's very spotty and slow, despite being super fast 25 feet closer. The network extender can't even pick up the original signal.

I am now thinking a Powerline adapter might be our best option to maintain our "free" service.

Can I connect one adapter to her modem and then on our side of the house, I can plug in my router??

This has been frustrating. Powerline adapters are new to me. I want to not intrude on her infrastructure much.

Thanks for any assistance you might give.

Need help with a new ISP setup & problems (Tech comes tomorrow)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 06:24 PM PDT

Recently got a 1:1 gigabit DSL fiber using company called fairpoint aka consolidated communications now. I have used a cable modem for a long time and have an okay understanding. There been some issues since install, our speeds are not even close to 1 gigabit and speed test @ 300-600 download and 800-1000 upload~ and true sustained speed drops to 200-300 download Mbps in applications like steam, battle.net & other download platforms. Tested on multiple computers and operating systems. The router is Zyxel VMG4825-B10A which was designed in ~2000. In addition when using a server browser in games like counter strike, tf2 and Squad when you refresh it few times to ping servers it will cause everything on the computer to lock up and lag greatly and or prevent pings all together. My ISP does not offer Gigabit to anyone really and we are quite lucky so no one is able to help us, tech who installed it said they only have 1 computer in the state that can test gigabit speeds and he didn't have it.

I know they are shooting the bush, I looked into settings of this router and its pretty bare. I am leaning towards the router being unable to handle my usage. Another weird thing is our upload is much more constant than our download. We often reach max speed on upload but our download varies greatly. Our upload has ALWAYS been higher than our download. I am not exactly sure what this all means.

I have few questions, I am confused on what I have and what I need to setup my own router with connection like this. We box with fiber connection that is a size of an iPhone downstairs that outputs into a Ethernet runs into the Zyxel VMG4825-B10A it has https://imgur.com/a/vuSDpSV this setup. Currently I have a asus ac1900 router and cant get it to work, I am able too ping google.com in CMD but when I go to website it redirects to my ISP and says things are not configured properly. My ISP is known for not being use your own router friendly. What are peoples thoughts on this because I am quite confused on where to go next as well as things I should ask the tech when he comes.

Lastly on the phone a tech agent who seem understanding said we should be getting no less than 800 so take that as you will...

Asus RT-AC86U can only connect to VPN once

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:51 AM PDT

I have a new Asus RT-AC86U, firmware v3.0.0.4.384_21140, and if the VPN client disconnects for any reason it can't connect again, complaining that it failed authentication even though no settings have changed. The solution is to re-upload the ovpn configuration file, with no changes.

Also, periodically DNS seems to completely fail until the router is rebooted.

    hi guys

    i havea ASUS RT-AC86U Dual Band AC2900

i need to forward ports 8080 and 5400 for nvr camera

with my previous virgin superhub 3 it worked.. i would create an ip address i.e. 192.168.0.50 and 192.168.0.60 for example and assign each of the above ports and i could access/view the cameras via my phone

i am trying to do the same on the asus router with merlin firmware, but i can't get it to work

    virgin superhub 3 is modem
    asus - router

a tp link homeplug device is connected to the dvr for ethernet capabilities. (downstairs, away from router)

i have no idea how to set this on the router and get it work? (the above steps were completed by the cctv installer and it works on the superhub)

Can Router forward all traffic through a proxy?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:51 PM PDT

I have a Linksys EA9300 Router with a hardline to the internet, but when the line goes down, I would like to manually configure the router to utilize the USB 4G LTE Modem proxy I have configured on my Pi.

I can already connect to the internet via the Pi-proxy on any browser by using the standard: 192:168.0.122:Port,Username,Password

What settings would I need to change on the Linksys Router to make this happen?

    LevelOne Switches?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:28 PM PDT

tl;dr: Currently I have an existing gigabit network setup but I'm running out of ports so I'm planning to get a Fast Ethernet switch for my devices that supports up to Fast Ethernet only (Rpi, Android TV Box) so I can free up the ports on my gigabit switch

Been lurking around recently for switches because of homelab upgrade and found a deal on FSW 1670TX (Fast Ethernet, I know, but I still have some devices that are capped at 100mbps, looking at you, Raspberry Pi and Android TV box).

I'm at Asia so I have limited choices over here.

However, I did some lookup but can't seem to find much reviews about their switches online. Anyone who used/heard about it before? I did some lookup on r/networking and there's only like 2 posts that mentions LevelOne

Technical Spec (in which I found out about the power consumption which is one of my concern as well): http://download.level1.info/manual/FSW-1670TX_UM.pdf

    Things that I'm looking:

    1. Heat
    2. Noise

    Nighthawk R7000 overkill?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 07:43 AM PDT

Hey everyone. We are moving to a 2 bedroom apartment soon and I'm in the market for a new router and not sure if the Nighthawk R7000 or the Asus RT-AC68U is too much router and if I should go a different route.

Devices: XBOX 1 (hard wired) XBOX 1X (hard wired) Smart TV Gaming PC (hardwired) Laptop Chromecast Roku Stick Google home 6 smart plugs Eventually some Google minis

I would like the router to handle 4k streaming for the future and gaming.

Your recommendations would really help. Not sure if a less expensive router would do the trick.

    Thanks.

Cable modem turns off, and then turns on again. But ONLY when the coax is plugged in.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 04:07 PM PDT

So, I have my home network setup since March, and I've had no problems since. I have a Technicolor TC4350 modem, edgerouter lite, and 2 netgear unmanaged switches. And all of a sudden last week my internet dropped, and then went up again. Restarted router, issue persisted. I eventually went downstairs and watched the modem doing this power cycle. The modem would maybe stay on for 5 minutes, 10 if I'm lucky.

I then unplugged all cables from the modem and watched it. The modem never turned off. I've plugged in only my router, and it still stayed powered. I plug in only the coax cable and bam, turns off withing 5 minutes. I have tried a new modem I've tried different power outlets through the house, I'm also not using a splitter.

I've tried using a surge protector for the coax cable, thinking maybe I keep getting a surge of power through the coax, still turns off. I'm stumped, the tech support it stumped. They are sending a technician to my house next week. I am assuming it is a line issue, hopefully they can figure it out.

Any one here have any clue what is could be? And to be clear, it turns off ONLY when the coax cable is plugged in, and it also turns back on by itself.

    Thanks in advance.

Was thinking of getting the Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite to run to a guest house, how easy is the setup for someone who knows little about networking?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 10:59 AM PDT

I've posted here before, so I won't bore anyone with the details. Plain and simple I need better connection in the guest house. I was going to get 100ft of cable and a Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite and do a test run to see what happened. After reading some review however, I found it may not be that simple.

Am I able to just plug and play and be on my way? Or what's the process?

Orbi as AP with Edgerouter X or DD-WRT or ?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:03 PM PDT

I currently have an Orbi with 2 satellites and 1 outdoor satellite. Looking to get more refined control over some things on the router side like QoS and device bandwidth live monitoring. My internet is 10 D / 3 U. Looking to spend less than $70.

An ER-X or router with DD-WRT/Tomato/OpenWRT seem to have the extra controls I want. I've run DD-WRT and Tomato on routers before. EdgeOS doesn't intimidate me either. The Wifi portion will be handled by the Orbi in AP mode.

My network has about 25 devices on it. I have an AT&T microcell that needs better QoS priority for stability. The limited and hidden QoS menus on the Orbi haven't made a difference.

A bonus would be able to have something like a button on the router web page or something similar that could kill the connections to lower priority devices so that I won't have connection issues when I have to use my cell phone or Skype for Business calls.

Open to feedback and suggestions. Thanks.

    Speed Inside the Network

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:02 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I hope you're doing great.

Before the issue, let me give you a few details.

I have a Modem/Router, SmartRG SR630N, from my ISP with 4 LAN 10/100 Mbps ports and 1 WAN 10/100/1000 Mbps port. I also have a Linksys EA2700 and a Linksys EA7400. Currently, the Modem/Router is handling all of the DHCP, and I have my EA7400 connected in a LAN to LAN cascade, but the transferring speed inside the Home Network is around 10MBps, and I want to get the Network up to 100MBps, on compatible 1000Mbps ports and AC Wi-Fi.

I live on a two-story house, which is why I need to always have 2 routers, as the one in the First Floor won't get to the Second.

I was wondering if I can turn off the DCHP and NAT features from the ISP's Modem/Router, have it set just as a Modem, connect from its WAN port to my EA2700's WAN Port, and let the EA2700 handle all of the DHCP and NAT. Then, I want to have the EA7400 cascade LAN to LAN to the EA2700. Is this the best configuration or do you have better ideas?

    Thanks for your help!

Possible to damage modem/switch from cable line?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:40 PM PDT

So this may just be coincidence since spectrum said there was an outage in my area..

But I installed 2 runs of cat6 cable. Tested them and they tested fine. Plugged them into my patch panel....but I get no internet.

I Can see my switch usg and cloudkey thru the unifi controller so obviously the connection is good...but is it possible to "short" something with cat6?

I dont know how I would've... Also I haven't touched the coax line (and in fact tried another coax line on the opposite side of the house and it has no internet either) . So I know I didn't drill through it or something (separate wall anyways)

Or is it probably just a bad coicidence the internet is out.

    4g Signal Booster

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:34 PM PDT

I'm trying to get a decent LTE signal in my house as my satellite Internet is crap. There are spots around my house where I get two or three bars of reception. I've to a Wilson 4g Signal booster and an old Direct TV satellite dish. I've heard of others using cellphones and satellite antennas to boost their reception but is it possible to use a signal amp and antenna to provide a better experience. I also noticed that the amp and antenna are connected via Coax, does this cable pass signal or only power? If it passes signal I work in cable and might be able to better position the amp and just make a longer cable that runs to the amp.

Poor internet connection help (Excuse my lack of networking knowledge)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:15 PM PDT

Hi, I am hoping to find a solution for slow internet connection. (UK)

I am a student so the solution would only be required for a temporary period (ideally nothing too expensive). I am currently using a USB wireless adapter to receive wifi on my rig, as running an ethernet cable from the router wouldn't be an option. The wireless adapter I'm using has been great in other houses but I don't get great connection where I am now. I have a powerline socket (not sure if that's the correct name) and a coax socket in my room; so I was wondering if there is any low cost solution I can implement to achieve a wired connection. I've done research but haven't found anything except for moca and powerline adapters. The moca adapters would cost too much for the amount of time they will be used and powerline adapters seem to have a great deal of mixed reviews.

Is there any otherway I can take advantaqge of the sockets in my room or would one of the two mentioned above be my best bet?

    Thanks.
