For a student, Dell XPS 13 (2018), FHD vs UHD? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 09:32 PM PDT On the Microsoft store, you can get a 128 GB SSD UHD (4K) for $1,300 CAD while on Dell's store, you can get a 256 GB SSD FHD (1080p) for $1400. It seems like the 4K screen laptop is more "worth" but as a student, I don't think I'd ever really NEED the touch/4K. Honestly, I think I would prefer a longer battery life; what do you guys think is better choice? Saving $100 bucks is nice but are the battery difference big between the two? I've read around and it seems like the difference is like 3 hours (20-30%) which seems significant... Is this true? submitted by /u/WashingMachineT [link] [comments] |

Durable Gaming Laptop ~$800 Posted: 29 Jul 2018 04:11 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: ~800USD. I currently live in Japan but would prefer to order from the US, as electronics are overpriced here. Open to Japanese purchasing suggestions/options though. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specifications and build quality are the most important to me. I don't give a damn about battery life. How important is weight and thinness to you? It can weigh a ton and be thicc. While I'll rarely be taking this laptop out of my home, I want durability/excellent build quality after a horrible experience with my flimsy Acer. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 or higher (Larger the better) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. CSGO. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play CSGO and Dota 2 at max. I'm not really playing the latest top of the line games otherwise. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Overall build quality is important. Good cooling. IPS screen preferred. Optical drive unnecessary. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The laptop must include an SSD. Able to wait up to 2 months before purchasing. submitted by /u/watcher_of_the_desks [link] [comments] |
Which laptop would be best for light gaming? Posted: 29 Jul 2018 12:24 AM PDT Hello guys! I'm currently deciding between the 'HP Envy x360 15-BP108TX' and the ' Xiaomi Notebook Pro'. Laptop for 500$ , Georgia . Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:35 AM PDT Hi there guys ! hope you all doing well. i'll be carrying it with the backpack , so lighter would be better , but it's not really important. - Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Windows ( aaand maybe linux in the future ) - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
again no strong preference , but for the sake of naming it 13" would be the one i'd lean to. - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
i mainly need it for web programming ( HTML , CSS , JS and Python ) . Also some video/photo editing for future is considerable. As for the gaming not so much , i'll be using my rig. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Well i am known for " Breaking everything i touch " , so a little sturdy laptop would be nice . But being able to connect to a Monitor , keyboard and mouse would be the only priority. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Well i am okay to buy any used laptops in a good condition . submitted by /u/basiiner21 [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Mechanical Engineering Student ~$900 Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:29 AM PDT Hello, I'm going into senior year of high school this fall and into an ME program in fall of 2019. The only laptop I've had for the past 4 years is a mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro that is unbearably underpowered and heavy, so I'm in the market for a new laptop. I've been considering the Dell G5 w/a GTX 1050 ti , the Lenovo 720s w/MX150, and the ASUS Vivobook S15 w/MX150. - Total budget and country of purchase: Preferable under 900 US Dollars, if any higher, it'd be great if the place of purchase offered a financing option, like at Dell or Lenovo.
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and no need for a 2 in 1. At least 6 hours of battery, willing to carry the power brick if necessary, though.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness doesn't matter. Weight is a bit of an issue, though. I made the mistake of buying a mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro a couple of years back and the weight is just too much for the crappy performance. Carrying it around high school was bad enough and I can't imagine carrying a 5.5lb laptop around in college. If possible I would like something less than 4lbs, but budget doesn't always agree with that.
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not less than 13"
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be running Solidworks and other CAD software for sure, I'm more of a handheld gamer so gaming on the machine isn't a priority. I've also read that many people just go to computer labs for their CAD work (if you're experience was different, feel free to say so and offer feedback), so I think I just need a machine capable of running CAD acceptably on the go. I dabble in photography, so a color accurate screen would be nice, but it isn't a deal breaker.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Something that won't crap out in 3 years and preferably backlit keyboard. Also, it doesn't have to have an SSD, but at least a 1TB hard drive. Thunderbolt and USB-C don't matter.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The search for a laptop has been long and hard, so thanks for any help!

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a 2 in 1 with good battery. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Definitely something with a high screen to body ratio (Want a screen that I could comfortably use for hours without the laptop being too big) and 13 inches or bigger. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Beginner computer programming, surfing the internet, drawing on it. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I won't game on it. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like something with a comfortable keyboard and a pen support (So a touch-screen that is good for learning to draw). Laptop for Civil Engineering ~$950 AUD, Australia Posted: 29 Jul 2018 03:11 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $850-1000 AUD, Australia. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not fussed about 2 in 1 or any other gimmicks. Priorities are best specs for value and good battery life to last a typical 4-6 hour uni day. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very. Nothing too bulky, but would appreciate some sturdiness. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A, happy to settle for any size as long as it's not too small. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Will definitely require Auto/CivilCAD in the future. Potentially some mathematical computations and graph/curve/surface displays. Light programming possibly with matlab / python. For personal use, light to medium gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing AAA / new releases. Typically resort to indie games / older releases. This might be a stretch, but would like to able to run gamecube / wii era emulators (with Dolphin) at low to medium settings. If I'm asking for too much with my budget range, don't worry. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality. Longevity to last ~ 4 years and beyond. Good keyboard / touchpad for fast typing / browsing would be nice. Not interested in touch screens and other non-essential add-ons. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-14". I currently own a 15" laptop and this is causing some problems for my back and shoulders. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? In my spare time I play The Sims 4, but this is not that much of a priority. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Most, if not all, if possible: backlit keyboard, great battery performance, no heating issues, HDMI and VGA ports, at least four USB ports. Best Laptop in 1500 dollar range +-200 Posted: 29 Jul 2018 01:45 AM PDT Please help, United States I need a laptop to get me through the next four years of school as an engineering student in the 1500 dollar price range. I would consider paying more if it's worth the investment (no more than 2k). I don't do much gaming, but I wouldn't mind having something powerful enough to sustain it if I were to ever get into it. I like the idea of something portable but I'd like to keep the screen size 14" to 15". I've noticed a lot of gaming laptops only having Full HD screens, would it be worth buying something with a 4K display? Aesthetics are a plus but not a deal breaker as long as it's not butt ugly and really thick. Thank you submitted by /u/Erniehomie [link] [comments] |
