Distro? Based on expected usage & hardware specs? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:35 PM PDT Hello all, here's the specs: Make/Model: Toshiba Satellite L755-S5306 Processor: i3-2330M @ 2.20GHz RAM: 4 GB (will be upgraded to 8 soon) Storage: 500 GB HDD (will eventually upgrade to SSD) System Type: 64 bit So, this will be my first time ever using Linux. It's currently running Windows 7, but I want to wipe the HDD and start with a fresh install, I've been leaning towards Ubuntu, but, maybe Mint? Yes, I already backed up everything. About myself: I want to learn Linux. I've been Windows/Mac my whole life, and I've been working as a web developer for 2 years now. I enjoy programming very much, and I want to progress; web development has been my introduction to programming; but I'm not sure it's what I want to do in the future. Eventually, when time and money permit, I want to setup a home lab, and explore that world as well. Learning nodeJS, I've found that I might be more suited for backend programming. I don't care much for working with HTML and CSS. I definitely consider myself a noob at pretty much everything computers. I finished a bootcamp program to land my job as a jr dev, but before that, I've always been a passive computer user. However, the past 2 years I've found I love learning about computers and programming. If I've done my homework right, since I'm only further exploring programming (I'm not much of a gamer), it's my understanding that my hardware should have no problem handling most distributions. On Distros: So, on the business of a distribution. I'm not sure exactly what I'm getting into, the internet overwhelmingly states that Ubuntu and Mint for beginners. Apparently some other distributions are much more difficult? I don't really understand what they mean by that, but, I'm sure I'll find out. I have a Macbook that I use for any development I do at home; so I'm not really worried about being stuck on a problem with my Linux machine since I have a backup. Hopefully this doesn't all just sound really dumb. So ya, any insight would be nice. I know I didn't really post direct questions, but, Ubuntu vs Mint for an inquiring beginner who likes programming? What's the differences? Entirely recommend something else? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

High CPU usage while downloading from steam Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:50 PM PDT I use Solus and recently noticed that when I download a game from steam it spikes my cpu usage to around 60-70% when it's the only thing open. Is there anyway to lower the usage? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:41 PM PDT I'm working on Integrating an Ericsson cellular site. But that's not super important. What's relevant is that they have a special flavor of Linux called "Smart Laptop" that boots off a USB drive. It has programs and such installed in Linux that are useful for the task. I've got it working just fine on Win7; however, I've got another tech using Win10 and we can't get it to boot if our lives depended on it. IIRC there's some security settings or some such that need to be disabled.... We've turned off the Fast Boot option, and it's still not verking.... Any thoughts? This same USB Drive boots just fine on my Win7 work computer, but I can't get it to work on either his Win10 machine, or my Win10 personal laptop [link] [comments] |

Where can I see Ubuntu flavours weight on resources compared? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:29 PM PDT I keep reading how Lubuntu is the most lightweight, but keep wondering about how the other flavours compare. Any recommended webpage where I can see which are the most resource heavy flavours and the least by comparing them all between each other? [link] [comments] |
Resources that helped me to get started with Linux Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:15 AM PDT Hey folks! I am a graduate student who wants to start a career as a Programmer and started using Linux (Ubuntu) in January 2018. It was a bit of a challenge at the start for me as I did not understand what terms like mount means. I am focusing on JavaScript and installation of Development environment was a pain in the ass on windows while things felt more solid and smooth on Ubuntu (nodejs, npm, git). Thanks to the Ubuntu community for helping out newcomers! Currently, I consider myself a pro-beginner user (can install packages, use command line, etc) and I'd like to share the resources that helped to advance in the past months:
If there are more beginner oriented resources, please share. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu performance much worse than Windows 10? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 10:21 AM PDT Hi there! A couple weeks ago I switched from Windows 10 to Ubuntu and noticed that the performance is much worse than in Windows 10. It works great for a couple minutes and than just randomly freezes or has significant performance drops. 20 seconds later it's great again only to stop working properly again like 10 minutes later. I didn't try any games yet but I can't run a VM using Virtualbox without anything freezing and a lot of the times I can't even search for any programs because the entire interface is so..unresponsive and laggy. Am I just not getting something or what exactly is wrong? I really like the OS but these performance issues are annoying. Thanks, guys. EDIT: I'm using: An i5-4460. 8GB of RAM and a nvidia gtx 750. Any way to ignore which apps show up in the Plank dock? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:25 AM PDT Hi r/linux4noobs, I'm currently playing with the Plank dock and it sometimes shows apps such as "Plasma Desktop Workspace", which are the part of my DE. screenshot of that behaviour: https://i.redd.it/zlpvj5a6fr611.png Is there any way of telling Plank to ignore those apps? Maybe there is a config file for that? [link] [comments] |

SDDM not working on Arch after Syu Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:29 PM PDT Hello! I've been using arch for about three weeks now, and everything was going hunky dory until last night. I wanted to try and load steam onto my laptop so i read up on the arch wiki and followed it. After un-commenting the multilib line i upgraded the system using pacman -Syu and turned off my computer. I did notice that upon pressing my power button to get to the logout/shutdown screen the KDE logout app was not working and a notification was popping up asking to restart the app, which would still not work. I did make the silly mistake of just running shutdown from the command line and going to bed since it was late, and I decided i would pick it up in the morning. Upon turning on my computer i realized SDDM was not working and i was presented with only a black screen, upon running "sddm" from root the screen flashes "xaunth (stdin) add, bad command line" What are my next steps that I should take? I have work on the computer that I had started and I really do not want to wipe everything and attempt another fresh install, especially since i had finally just finished customizing my de and making kde and i3 work together. Any help is appreciated! Thank you! P.S the following is a bit more info on my machine OS: Arch Linux Hardware: Late 2011 Macbook Pro DE/WM: KDE Plasma with i3-gaps DM: SDDM [link] [comments] |

Proper way to dual boot Windows 10 and Linux Posted: 27 Jun 2018 07:17 PM PDT Hi, I recently came across this question and the 7-step answer looks pretty simple. My concern and what I'd like to be sure of is if doing this will in any way affect either OS when Windows receives one of those big updates. Will it be the case that I'll have to unplug the Linux drive just to install major Windows updates, or will they behave nicely if everything is set up right? If it matters, I'm thinking of installing Elementary OS. I installed it as the main OS on my laptop and would love to have it on my desktop next to Windows. [link] [comments] |
Good way of passing a variable within single quotes for awk command Posted: 27 Jun 2018 02:24 PM PDT I have the following code where I compare the age of the files and then print the file names accordingly. My data is coming from aws s3 so I have no command to nicely filter without pipping the output. I have a variable which stores the time_stamp and then i want to get files
Any feedback is appreciated right now it does not work . Error broken pipe [link] [comments] |
Can I decrypt and read (write too if possible) to a LUKS/Ext4 encrypted external HDD in MacOS? Posted: 27 Jun 2018 02:23 PM PDT I have seen options for just R/W Ext4 but nothing mentioning encryption. Is this possible? [link] [comments] |
Samsung Notebook 7 Spin with Aptio BIOS software Posted: 27 Jun 2018 04:21 PM PDT I ran into a huge obstacle this morning. My laptop has a fucked up version of Aptio Setup Utility installed as its BIOS, and I can't boot anything by USB even if I disable secure boot and everything else. The BIOS won't allow it. I can't boot Knoppix. It seems like it will only allow me to restore the laptop back to factory settings, so I can't do anything I want with this laptop. When I tried to install Windows 7 (because ANY computer can run Windows 7, right?), I got an error message saying the installer doesn't have the disk drivers, and made me open the file explorer (how can it see it if it doesn't have the drivers?) to find the driver which I didn't have. Knoppix never loaded the desktop environment after leaving the laptop on for over an hour. It seems like my laptop doesn't want to cooperate with anything. And I'm not even sure if I burned the ISO onto the flash drive properly, and every online guide I see tells me to already use Linux to make bootable Linux flash drives. I read online somewhere that if I try to install Ubuntu, I run the risk of bricking the motherboard. This was a $1000 laptop 2 years ago and I'm having a terrible experience with Windows 10 lately. It seems to get more bloated and buggy with every new mandatory Windows update. It's also loaded with malware that forces me to install certain search engine plugins and other things and I have no way of getting rid of them. I'm sick of Windows. Most of the software I use is open source and has Linux versions anyway, so why not change over? My goal is to install Kubuntu. I've used many distros of Linux before on old computers, and I never had any problems with booting or anything else. It seems like newer computers don't want me to boot any kind of Linux on them. Remember when you could load the ISO within Windows, and install a dual boot from your Windows desktop? My laptop won't let me do that either. I don't even know how to do it anymore. I remember it used to be really easy. ---- TLDR
