Using 2 laptops and one as a monitor?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:50 AM PDT

So I have two laptops and I want to use them both. I want to use one of them as an extra monitor, but I'm not sure it would work. I assume I would use and HDMI cable but I am not sure. Anyone know if this is possible?

College laptop (lenovo yoga 730 or ideapad 530s)

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:30 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a new laptop for uni and I came across the Lenovo 730 15" (with GTX1050) and the ideapad 530s 15" (MX150). Since they're pretty new there are not a lot of reviews so I hoped some of you guys already tried them out!
Battery life is extremely important and I'd like to get at least 8 hours while going to uni. I also like to play some games (sporadicly) like the witcher 3 and total war: Warhammer, I don't care if it's not on the highest setting as long as it looks decent with decent frame rates.
So what are your thoughts and experiences with these laptops?

    (my budget is around $1000)

    Thanks

    Upgrade Asus A54C wireless card?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:30 PM PDT

Stock wireless card: Ralink corp. RT5390 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe

I'd like to upgrade the wireless card on this old laptop (made in 2012). I think I'd benefit from an upgrade because back when it had Windows on it, the card would sometimes "shut off" and I'd have to restart it from the Windows wireless menu. On Linux it'll stop working, the software will say it's still transmitting, and I'll have to restart to get it to work again. So it's kind of been an issue the whole time I've had the laptop, on two different OSs

    • It's a 802.11n card, so I think it only picks up 2.4ghz?
    • I believe that Asus does not have a bios whitelist.

Would I definitely benefit from an upgrade? What card should I replace it with?

    Lenovo Laptop Opinions

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:21 AM PDT

I just purchased recently a Lenovo Legion Y520 from Lenovo and have been having issues with corrupt updates and having to manually install. It crashed on me and got stuck in a booltloop with multiple errors, and I couldn't even factory reset without a blue screen. Lenovo IT support told me there's nothing that can be done really, and I'll have to contact sales with my case number to go from there. I have to wait until Monday for that now, so I'm currently without a computer.

What do you guys think about Lenovo? Should I get a refund, or should I just get it replaced through them?

Is it okay to leave laptop plugged in?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 02:17 PM PDT

Hi, I wanted to know if it's okay to leave a laptop plugged in when it's already at 100%, to use connected to external monitors (like a PC) or maybe charge overnight.

    Thank you.

Razer Blade 15 (2018) review at notebookcheck - MSI GS65 wins noise and temperature

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:43 PM PDT

Finally the comparison is complete. All data were grabbed from notebookcheck's reviews:

    Razer Blade 15 (2018)

    MSI GS65 Stealth Thin (2018)

    Gigabyte Aero 15X

Personally I prefer the MSI GS65. Maybe the stupid design of upside down motherboard has finally paid off for the least weight, noise and temperature.

Enabling VT on Acer Aspire E15 E5-575G-57D4

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:23 PM PDT

I bought the laptop a while ago. Now I need virtualization to assist my VMs and Android SDKs. It seems that the option is not in the BIOS settings. Is there a workaround of some sort?

I'm thinking of upgrading the BIOS. Has anyone done so? Does the new BIOS have the option to enable virtualization?

best 15 to 17 inches laptop for a computer science student?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:31 PM PDT

I will do these followings : - development - some intense processes like machine learning - watching movies ( so if it has good resolution that's a bonus )

no 13 inches because I don't like developping on a small screen.

Price range about 1000 euros, can't go beyond 1500 euros

Can anyone help me decide between these two laptops?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 11:14 AM PDT

Costco has 2 laptops on discount that seem nice but one thing has me very confused. Basically the 13" is discounted $200 making the price $699.00. Alternatively, there is a 15", with exactly the same specs, only discounted $50 making it also $699. Why would the smaller one originally be more expensive? Can anyone help me. If there is no reason then of course i would get the 15". But if there is a reason then i'd go for the 13" i think.

    Link for the 13" https://www.costco.com/Dell-Inspiron-13-5000-Series-2-in-1-Touchscreen-Laptop---Intel-Core-i7---1080p.product.100404076.html

Accessories for the HP Spectre x360 15 inch laptop

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:58 AM PDT

Don't know if this is the best place to ask this question, but im looking for something very specific. Apple Macbook pros have these protective covers/hard shell cases that are aesthetically pleasing to me. Are there any accessories or covers similar to these covers for my laptop? They seem to only cover the back of the monitor.

I am looking for this accessory because I want to put stickers on my laptop without having the sticker glue come directly in contact with the computer. If you have any suggestions for this other than a the clear cover im describing, please tell me! Anything helps.

Looking for a lightweight laptop with solid build quality

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 10:01 AM PDT

I've had a MacBook Pro for the last few years but I'm switching back to PC. The one thing I miss about the Mac is the solid build quality. I've tried a bunch of laptops and they're just plastic and chintzy.

This laptop will be used for business mostly, no gaming. I do also need a high end display. A lot of these laptops have crappy screens that are fuzzy or faded looking.

    Budget is around $1000.

Need some help picking a new laptop!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 09:03 AM PDT

Hello, I need a new laptop 'cause my current one is kind of an old crappy ASUS that feels like it could die anyway, I would say stay as far away from them as possible, their chargers are stupid thin on their ultra books and break after about a year... Just an FYI.

For comparison's sake, my current laptop has an i3, 720P 15.6 inch screen, weighs about 4.5 pounds, and has a 500 GB HDD.

I'm open to: Lenovo, HP, Dell, maybeeeee Acer. No microsoft surface laptop: even though it's a sexy beast, having no user upgrade-ability and its pricetag scares me, dell xps is better for that price... no macbook yes I know, macbooks do last the longest out of all laptops... (on average) but I just cannot get used to macOS for the life of me.

Anyway, here are the options I was considering:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/dell-inspiron-13-i5379-7302gry-pus-2-in-1-pc/92vcb2bpwvm2/57rp?activetab=pivot:techspecstab

I heard that Dell was really good for lasting long term, and the specs on this one seem pretty good.

    This one looks decent too:

    https://www.staples.ca/en/Lenovo-Yoga-710-80V5000XCF-15-6-Touch-Screen-Notebook-2-5-GHz-Intel-Core-i5-7200U-256-GB-SSD-8-GB-RAM-Windows-10/product_2473446_1-CA_1_20001

The only advantage I see in this laptop over the dell is the discrete graphics card, but you also get a worse CPU in that one...

Keep in mind that I live in CANADA, prices here are very different from you guys in the south :P

I'm open to other options, but they all seem a bit expensive for what I'm looking for: preferrably an 8th gen cpu (7th gen is fine too, as long as if it's at least an i5), 8 GB RAM minimum (I can upgrade that myself no problem), preferably an SSD (Don't want to deal with buying one myself), long lasting, light weight (I'm gonna be carrying it around in a backpack often), long-ish battery life (current laptop lasts 2 hours), doesn't overheat.

I'm not gonna be using it for gaming too often, only light gaming once in a while. I'll mainly be using it for school work like autocad or programming which will be a bit CPU intensive, though my current laptop can handle it just fine so that's not much of an issue. I'm kind of excited to see how much better an i5 or i7 will be, and I hear SSD's make a huge difference! Though, will 256 GB be enough? How much does Windows itself use? How much will be left over for me?

Sorry for the unorganized mess up there, I'm just finding it hard to find a good laptop is all.

    Laptop SSD Installation (HP bs145tu)

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:29 AM PDT

    Hello!

I am going to buy my first laptop ever, and it is going to be this one.

It doesn't have an SSD, and I know nothing about installing SSDs into laptops (I have installed one into my desktop though).

So, how can I install an SSD in that laptop (keeping the HDD)? How hard would it be? I really don't want to break my first laptop...

General answers are welcome, but I would really appreciate answers that are about this specific model. Thanks so much!

Battery swap for mid-2012 Macbook air or new laptop?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:25 AM PDT

I'm starting to have battery issues with my mid-2012 macbook air. Apple store is quoting me $200 to replace the battery but i'm not sure if I should just get a new laptop since its been about 6 years. For those who think I should get a new laptop, any recommendations? I prefer something that has a long battery life and is relatively lightweight (similar to the air).

    HP Pavilion x360

    Posted: 30 Jun 2018 07:23 AM PDT

    https://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/laptops/hp-pavilion-x360-387003--1

Is this laptop worth it? If not, what are some cheaper laptops with similar features or laptops in the same price range with better features?

    Edit: Adding in form

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
I live in the United States and I'm looking for a laptop between $300 and $400. Willing to go up to $500 if it's worth it or the things I need are unrealistic for that price range.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Best specifications for the money. Preferably with a 2 in 1 and an SSD.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thinness important and weight extremely important because I'll be carrying it around with me all the time

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Photoshop and I might do some light gaming. I'll mostly use this for movies and essays though.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't currently game so I can't really answer this

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality and anything that increases lifespan.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I just graduated high school and am off to college soon so saving money is important for me right now, but I also realize that spending a few hundred extra now will save me more in the long run. Most important things to me are lifespan, weight, 14 inch, and the 2 in 1 but if compromising on something is worth it I'm willing to do so.

Lenovo Yoga 520 or wait for Yoga 530

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:35 PM PDT

I can either buy the Yoga 520, which is on sale now for €750 instead of €800, or I could wait for the Yoga 530 with ryzen 7 which will soon be available for €830. What are your thoughts? There don't seem to be a lot of other differences between them for as far as I can tell. And I don't know how good Lenovo's new AMD laptops are.

Edit: decided to buy the Yoga 520. Turns out it has an MX130, despite it wasn't mentioned on the store page. I'm quite happy so far.
