    Simple Questions - May 04, 2018

    Posted: 04 May 2018 05:17 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is going over 60 fps worth if I have a 60hz monitor?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 07:56 AM PDT

Hey guys, I recently bought a used computer with a GTX 1070 and a 1080p 60hz, which the graphics card is more than capable of reaching.
So, my question is: am I better off capping my fps at 60, is going over more beneficial in terms of smoothness, or maybe is it even counterproductive?

Is it worth buying a used gpu?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 05:36 AM PDT

I found a GTX 1080 for 500$ and it looks really good. The seller says he accepts any kind of tests and the card was used rarely, and was bought off of Amazon. What do you think, is it worth it? It would really help me since I am from Romania and a new GTX 1080 goes for 600-700$ and I have a budget of 1000$. Since he accepts any kind of tests, is there a kind which tells me if the card was used for mining? Thanks in advance.

Need some final opinions about my first build before I start ordering parts.

    Posted: 04 May 2018 06:48 AM PDT

Hi everyone! My last post was about 16 hours ago so I'm sorry if I'm posting too soon, but I'm so excited and I really want to build my first pc but I don't trust myself enough to know whether this is good or not. I've had some good help here but now I really want someone to look over my final list and tell me whether it'll work.

Some quick information about what I plan to use it for:

    • I mainly want to use this build for general internet browsing and gaming.
    • I'd like to be able to play modern games at 1080p on max/high settings with like 120fps if possible or at least 60+.
    • My budget for the entire build, including a new monitor, is around where it's at right now (1150 USD on PcPartPicker, unfortunately around 1400 USD for me to buy them in the Netherlands).
    • Besides the monitor I got all the peripherals and I got Windows 10.

So I've finally settled on this list:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel - Core i5-8600K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor $237.99 @ SuperBiiz
    CPU Cooler CRYORIG - M9i 48.4 CFM CPU Cooler $19.89 @ OutletPC
    Motherboard MSI - Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $89.99 @ Newegg Business
    Memory Team - Elite Plus 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory $149.99 @ Newegg
    Storage Samsung - 860 Evo 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $79.99 @ Amazon
Storage Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $43.85 @ OutletPC
    Video Card EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB SC GAMING Video Card $299.99 @ B&H
Case Corsair - 270R ATX Mid Tower Case $35.00 @ Newegg
    Power Supply EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply $53.98 @ Newegg
    Monitor AOC - G2460PF 24.0" 1920x1080 144Hz Monitor $201.81 @ Amazon
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $1252.48
    Mail-in rebates -$40.00
    Total $1212.48
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-05-04 15:06 EDT-0400

(Note: I'm pretty sure after looking at all possibilities that these are the cheapest options for me, so switching them for cheaper options on PcPartPicker won't really help)

(Note 2: This is an updated list with the Cryorig M9i instead of the Hyper 212 EVO, the i5-8600K instead of the i5-8400 and the Samsung 860 EVO 250GB instead of the SanDisk SSD PLUS 240GB)

I'm pretty happy with it. I can get this entire list for a little under 1400 USD in my country (the Netherlands) which is more than I was hoping but that's fine.

Now before I start ordering parts I want to be sure that everything's fine. PcPartPicker says everything is compatible but it would be great if a human could tell me nothing is wrong with it or if something is.

Is the power supply (550W) fine for the build (306W)? I switched DDR4-3000 RAM to this DDR4-2400 because I read it doesn't make much difference for gaming, and it was a bit cheaper.

I'd love to hear whether you think I can buy these parts and assemble them. :)

Computer crashes while under moderate load

    Posted: 04 May 2018 02:31 PM PDT

While streaming games such as Fortnite and CSGO and having programs such as Spotify up, my pc will crash after about an hour. I feel like my pc is strong enough to handle these loads, plus I don't have any other applications open at the time. Also, before the crash my pc doesn't show any signs of slowing down and my game or stream doesn't deteriorate at all. I looked at the temps and my cpu was holding a steady 70 degrees Celsius. Any help?

No power to anything after troubleshooting PC restarting when I hit my desk

    Posted: 04 May 2018 01:50 PM PDT

Hey, so I have a bit of a nightmare scenario here. My PC was restarting when I hit or just leaned on my desk to hard, so I tried to figure out what exactly it was. After many hours of testing everything and changing my mind on what I thought was the issue, I finally was pretty certain I'd found the cause, a internally damaged 24pin power cable from my PSU to my motherboard or a damaged 24pin slot on the motherboard, with even the slightest of movement of this cable by the input to the motherboard the PC would restart, even when I tried to make sure that the head didn't move at all and only moved the cabling, it would still restart.

However, this is where things get worse, I was trying to figure out how to approach the problem and my dad was helping me because he said he wanted to help, but he had noticed that my GPU was sagging a little bit and thought that was a major issue because he doesn't really know PCs all that well, I tried to explain to him that a little bit of GPU sag is fine, it's really just a small amount, but he insisted that it wasn't right, so he tried messing with it even though I was telling him not to, after I'd finally got him to stop I tried to turn on the PC and to my absolute horror, I had no power to anything, before I would at least have some things light up, like the GPU, but now I had nothing. I tried reconnecting most of the power cables to the motherboard and the GPU, and nothing.

I haven't tried reseating the GPU yet because this was late last night and my AIO tubes block me from doing that and I have a few others cables tied to those, so I decided to just call it a night. I don't think that my GPU now not being seated properly would cause no power to anything else right?

What should my course of action be to continue to troubleshoot this now, I have no idea what to do now, I'm really hoping nothing really bad has happened to anything. What should be trying to do?

TL;DR: Found what I thought to be the issue causing PC to restart with vibration(24pin power to mb from psu), dad saw that my GPU was sagging slightly and thought it was a big deal and messed with it a bit, tried turning on PC after that and had no power to anything. Anybody have any advice?

Am I splitting hairs here? Cost & GPU power

    Posted: 04 May 2018 12:07 PM PDT

Working on completing my first PC build ever. I only have the CPU and GPU left to buy. I have two questions (essentially).

I'm going for the i7-8700k. I missed out on a sale to buy it for ~$280 (normally ~$339). Do I either:

    • A) Wait around for [hopefully] another sale to get it below $300?

    or...

    • B) Buy from NewEgg for $349 + eBates (3% off, which is ~$10) + eBates new account $10 cash offer + GroupOn GiftCard "kick back" deal ($30 in gift cards). Free shipping. [~$50 off?]

I am also looking to purchase a GeForce GTX 1080 ... I have been looking at the various options (MSI, PNY, Gigabyte, EVGA, etc. etc. etc.)... I see base clocks and boost clocks all vary.....

    1. Do these base clocks and boost clocks matter to me? Aren't all 1080's capable of achieving the same speeds, just have to properly OC them with a program?

    2. Whether they DO or DO NOT matter, how do I know which brand has a superior version of the 1080? I see pricing range from $580-$750+.

    So then...

    • AA) Do I buy the CPU from NewEgg to get that bonus ("Free") $20 gift card, to then apply to the GPU purchase via NewEgg + eBates (3% off, which is ~$18) + GroupOn GiftCard "kickback" deal (~$50 in gift cards). Potentially free shipping, or $5.... [~$88 off total].

    or

    • BB) Do I wait around some more and hope that prices get even lower on the GPU...

Looking to upgrade current machine for 1080p 144hz gaming but keep as many parts as possible

    Posted: 04 May 2018 10:14 AM PDT

    Hello,

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Competitive games at 1080p 144hz and a little streaming on the side (I do it for fun, not serious about it).

My current machine is not able to keep above 150fps all the time on some games. Fortnite is the biggest one I'm concerned about but I also play a lot of WoW, Mobas etc. I'd also love to crush frames in games like the Witcher (144+ not as important here)

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I want to keep the upgrades under or as close to $1000 as possible. I'd love to use the same RAM unless it's really going to hinder me. I feel like the money would be better spent on CPU/GPU

Replace this text with your answer.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

    Here's my current build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel - Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor $194.98 @ SuperBiiz
    Motherboard Gigabyte - GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $40.98 @ Newegg
    Memory Kingston - HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory $219.89 @ OutletPC
Storage SanDisk - Ultra II 960GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $258.90 @ OutletPC
Video Card Sapphire - Radeon R9 Fury 4GB NITRO Video Card -
Case Corsair - 200R ATX Mid Tower Case $59.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA - 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply $79.89 @ OutletPC
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts

And I was thinking of going with something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor $339.69 @ OutletPC
    CPU Cooler CRYORIG - H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler $34.89 @ OutletPC
    Motherboard MSI - Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $99.99 @ Newegg Business
    Memory Kingston - HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory $219.89 @ OutletPC
Storage SanDisk - Ultra II 960GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $258.90 @ OutletPC
Video Card Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB WINDFORCE OC 8G Video Card $578.00 @ Amazon
Case Corsair - 200R ATX Mid Tower Case $59.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA - 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply $89.89 @ OutletPC
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total $1681.24

Any suggestions? I think what I picked might be overkill but honestly I just want to be done with it but also keep as many parts as possible and get the best bang for my buck.

I also feel like my CPU might be the main bottleneck and I could get away with keeping the Fury, but not sure on that one.

PSU doesn't fit, cant find solution online

    Posted: 04 May 2018 03:07 PM PDT

Hi all, FTP/LTL bla bla bla,

So I've finally decided to upgrade my PC (long overdue) and the parts arrived today. I have and am keeping my Antec Twelve Hundred V3 case and previously had an Antec 1000W PSU. The PC came with this as I bought on gumtree years ago and as part of my upgrade, decided to replace the PSU as I didn't like the braided cables and luckily had an other PSU that I had won in an giveaway a couple of years back with flat cables for better cable management. It's a Fractal Design Edison M 550W.

So, hooked up my new motherboard, new CPU, new heatsink and new RAM out of the case along with the FD PSU and it posted no problem, hooked up SSD and keyboard and Windows booted no problem. Very happy.

Transferred all of this to my case, but unfortunately the FD PSU doesn't fit in my Antec case. It's too small and can actually slide right through the PS hole with a fair bit of clearance. So my first issue is this, is there a solution to this that will allow me to keep my case and keep this PSU? I've looked at brackets but these seem to be for SFX PSU to ATX Cases. The FD PSU is ATX so this wouldn't help.

The second issue is that I decided just to use my old PSU instead. Hooked everything up and no ball. I press my power button and before I've even let go of it, it's lit up, fans running and turned off again. It then seems to power itself again after a few seconds then powers off. Then it keeps going in this loop, eventually posting but turning off.

Part of the reason for my upgrade was overheating issues (regular to hit 100C on very minimal load) and when dismantling, it became apparent the thermal paste was well and truly done. I assumed this was the only issue but now it sounds like the Antec PSU could be done for as well?

I'd welcome any and all opinions on either issue, I really don't fancy forking out for a new case or a new PSU as this upgrade has already cost me a fair bit.

Wonder what I will see performance wise between the two processors - Is it worth the extra £100 to get the 2700X over the 2600X? I'm mainly looking to play games and some light streaming here and there.

Main reason for upgrade is my CPU being defective.

Graphics Card Help, and what is gsync?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 02:50 PM PDT

So from what I've seen the Radeon RX 580 8GB is slightly better than the GTX 1060 6GB, but I see that the 580 is only freesync. I don't know what the difference between freesync and Gsync is, and I don't know if gsync is better? Should I just go with the 1060 for gsync?

I have a BenQ RL2460HT 60hz monitor and would like to game on it if that's any help. Ask more questions if you need any more info, thanks

[Troubleshooting] Row of discolored (not dead) pixels on monitor

    Posted: 04 May 2018 02:36 PM PDT

Sorry for the terrible picture but this is what I see on my desktop. https://i.imgur.com/kqm2zNC.jpg

Its a single row of pixels that goes across the whole monitor no matter the image displayed. It isn't just solid gray; it just slightly discolors the image.

This is a 34" 1440p Samsung curved ultrawide monitor that is connected to my 1080 via DisplayPort if that matters.

    Any help appreciated.

    Custom wall mounted case

    Posted: 04 May 2018 02:31 PM PDT

I wan't to wall-mount a computer next to a wall-mounted monitor, but I can't find any good cases for that. I was thinking about making my own out of MDF with a vinyl wrap and glass front:

    https://i.imgur.com/HG3m3u0.jpg

The case is 325mm wide, 140mm thick (the size of the 280mm radiator I bought) and 570 mm high (the height of the monitor I am mounting it next to).

Are there any issues I am going to run into?

I'm buying a case right now because I need it running right away.

I plan to set up the SSDs and HD's as RAID 0, which the motherboard supports. The 6TB external drive is for backup.

I already ordered the parts, but feel free to tell me if I did something wrong.

    It's for:

    • GPU accelerated rendering with Cinema 4D and Octane

    • CAD with Fusion 360

    • Video editing with Adobe After Effects

    • Photoshop
