    Simple Questions - May 03, 2018

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Haven't built a PC in 16 years, need to get away from Apple

    Posted: 03 May 2018 06:22 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I work in audio production mainly for film but also with game development including VR. I'd like to test VR builds on this system but don't see myself using it for a lot of VR since I don't have a Vive

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Would like to do a small amount of gaming but ok with medium->high graphics setting as opposed to ultra. Also happy to play titles released 2016-2017 as opposed to current.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    1500-2200 Australian Dollars

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Australia

Post a draft of your potential build here

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/Thjrr6

    updated: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/dbrbhy

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Just want advice if this build looks ok or if anything looks wasteful or insufficient. I am concerned about noise and overheating as I have over heating issues in my studio with my Macbook Pro currently (especially in summer) and noise is a factor since I will sometimes need to record sound in the room with the tower.

    Thanks heaps

    2600x vs 8600k build

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:11 AM PDT

Hey guys, going to upgrade both my motherboard and my cpu, and my question is should i go for the x470 board with the 2600x from amd or a Z370 board paired with Intels 8600k? I got a 1080ti and a predator x271 screen with 1440p and 144hz. Might add in 8700k and 2700x in the mix as well but i dont think i need them when i am going to play games the majority of the time? The games i play the most are pubg, fortnite, some bf1 as well as some other smaller titles. Not doing much other than gaming and browsing, but i'd like to browse the web etc while my games are still open if i die or something, without problems.

Currently have a GT 710. would an RX 480 be a good place to start for gaming? And will I need a Better power supply?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 06:27 PM PDT

I've seen some performance videos and most games I play and plan on getting appear to run at least 60fps but I still would like some other opinions. As for the power supply, my friend who built the PC said I might need a better one if I upgrade anything in the future. (I'd ask him all this but I'm not in contact with him atm) I apparently need to open my PC to see what kind i have and I don't want to rewrite all this so I'll update this in a couple minutes.

Other than that, I'm not too concerned with my other specs but here they are in case anyone sees any potential issues.

CPU:AMD FX 8300 GPU: GT 710 (soon to be changed ofc) RAM: 16gigs (two 8gig sticks, not sure if that matters or not) EDIT: Power Supply:Honestly, I have no idea what I'm looking for so here's a picture: https://imgur.com/a/y1HbGDR

I already have a freesync monitory, is a Vega 64 card at all worth it?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 10:37 AM PDT

I bought a pretty good freesync monitor around when GPU prices shot up last year, since it was great deal. Now that I've waited for ages, and GPU prices are starting to come down, I have to ask: If I can get a Vega 64 card for about the same price as a GTX1080, is it worth it?

I know the 64 is slightly worse for the same price point, but the difference likely isn't enough that I would notice, personally. I've seen complaints about thermals as well (i know that may just be review bias, but it seems like enough of a concern). Can anyone around here recommend the best choice here, considering I've already committed to freesync?

Fried my CPU during a delid?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:21 PM PDT

After a delid and application of Conductonaut, my pc isn't posting

    CPU: i7 4790k

    GPU: GTX 970

    MOBO: Maximus ranger vii

Before any of the comments saying "you knew the risks" "you're stupid for doing it" etc, I would like to address that yes I did know the risks, and I am not looking for pity. Today I did my first delid. I chose to delid (and surprise, it went south). I used an exacto knife, since I did not have a vice. Got the lid off, cleaned everything with alcohol, sealed the small components next to the dye with nail polish, applied conductonaut and closed the CPU back together with a few dots of nail polish under the lid to act as a glue. What could possibly have gone wrong?

Here are the parts that I think may have gone wrong:

When cutting through the glue, my exacto touched one of the pins that were inside the 4790k. Maybe this could have scratched it and somehow ruined the CPU?

When putting the CPU back into the mobo, I did not think about cleaning the underside of the CPU. So dust particles could have been sitting there.

When i first tried booting the PC, i had not plugged in the cable to the water cooler back in.

After realizing that I hadn't wiped the underside of the CPU, I took it out, wiped it and put it back in, making sure to plug in the cable for the water cooler.

No pins are bent, no cracks/cuts are in the dye. The Motherboard lights up when I try to boot, but the water cooler's light is pink, and the mobo has the number "23" writing out on the miniscreen. Not sure if this is normal though, as my case does not have glass side panels and I therefore rarely look at it.

What might have gone wrong? And what can I do to further improve myself in the future? And is this the CPU that has died, I might I have fucked up big time and screwed my entire mobo over?

If any pictures are needed, feel free to ask.

    Thanks a lot for reading.

Any other place to get Rosewill WiFi Adapter driver? The website has been down a few days now.

    Posted: 03 May 2018 07:00 AM PDT

I've installed the Rosewill - RNX-AC1900PCE and Windows 10 it's not working with Windows 10 out of the box. I'm attempting to install the drivers, but no luck.

    The product page works

But when I go to downloads and select to download the driver it just hangs and won't connect.

I've tried on three different computers and none work. Tried on my phone using cell data and still doesn't work. I used https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and it says it's down for everyone. Is there any other place to get the drivers?

    Problem with new Ryzen build

    Posted: 03 May 2018 12:39 AM PDT

I made a post a couple days ago about a refurbished Ryzen CPU, ASRock MoBo and new RAM that wasn't working. So I returned those three PC components to Micro Center earlier today and exchanged them for all brand new parts.

The three parts I bought were:

    • Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6 Core AM4 Boxed Processor with Wraith Spire Cooler
    • PRIME X370-PRO AM4 ATX AMD Motherboard
    • Ripjaws V 16GB 2 x 8GB DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit

Al parts are compatible and are compatible with the rest of my rig which includes:

    • MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB GPU
    • Corsair CX650M PSU
    • 240GB Sandisk SSD & 240GB OCZ SSD
    • 2TB Hitachi HDD
    • Corsair 200R Case

Anyways, I got everything hooked up correctly, to my knowledge since I've built 6 gaming PCs with no problems. When I booted it up, everything turned on, keyboard and mouse lit up, monitor turned on. At this point, everything was looking very promising. The BIOS screen popped up and I looked around to see what kind of options it had. I must have switched something from AUTO to manual without realizing it and clicked "Save and Exit"

It rebooted and showed the ASUS logo, my monitor, and began to boot up because it showed the "press DEL or F1 key" to enter bios and then out of no where the screen just went blank and went into sleep mode even though the computer was still running perfectly.

For the next two hours, I check forums, took apart all the components and reconnected them with the power off obviously. The computer would boot, the LEDs would light up in my PC and it definitely sounded like it was running, but my keyboard, mouse and monitor wouldn't turn on. After carefully fiddling with it some more, nothing would turn on anymore. It's as if the computer is completely dead now even though almost all the parts are fairly new to brand new. I don't understand how it can go from working perfectly to dying in a matter of less than two hours.

Please help me figure out what happened and what I can do to fix it. I would greatly appreciate any advice to help! Thank you!

Completed build after some brilliant help from this amazing community

    Posted: 03 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I've posted on here quite a few times over the past couple of months asking for help with the build i've just completed and was stunned at the amount of help that people were giving.

No matter how many times I posted it there was always a response with some really insightful comment that would trigger me to research my build even more for hours and hours.

I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out, and although it's a slight mismatch of parts I tried to get for cheap I feel like it still has a clean look.

So again, thank you so much for every person that commented on my threads and I really appreciate you taking your time out to help myself and others like you do in this sub,

    Cheers!

Flying to India (for six months) and then back again. How should I take my pc with me, without spending too much money

    Posted: 03 May 2018 12:46 PM PDT

I have a dell sd2716dgr monitor; a i7-8700k, MSI GTX 1080Ti, and a kraken x52 AIO cooler inside a fractal design define mini c tempered glass edition. Built it a few months back, when i moved to london for my studies. Now I am going back home for the vacations, and I really don't want to leave my computer here in some storage space just rotting away for 6 months. When I built it there were no plans at all of me ever going back home before my studies were over, so i built it without any thoughts of travelling; or else I would have gone with an mitx build and a smaller-cheaper monitor.

I am flying back from london heathrow with Jet Airways. And would really love some suggestions as to what I could do that won't break the bank or my pc.

    Things I have thought about:

    1. Shipping: No experience at all, don't even know if the pc will be safe or not. And no idea how much it will cost, although a company that does intrigue me is packandsend.co.uk with which i'll be getting in touch with tomorrow.

    2. Carrying it with me in Cabin: Can't find any rules or regulations about this and the customer support isn't able to help me at all with my queries regarding this. I think this will be the safest option but no one can give me an answer if this is legal or not

    3. Put the monitor in one bag after tightly wrapping it and in the other bag put my pc wrapped in clothes and towels, but remove the gpu. Carrying the gpu with me in the cabin (the kraken cooler, motherboard and ram sticks are pretty flush so i don't think they will move around a lot and thus thinking of leaving them in there). Both the suitcases are hard shells.

Edit: Solved, the twitter handles for Heathrow Airport and Jetairways (carrier) replied to my tweet asking about bringing my pc and monitor in cabin and they said it will be fine and it is allowed but I'll have to pass extra security checks.

P.S thanks to all of you for answering ym questions, and teaching me about air travel.

Finished Both of my Builds Today - One as a Gift for my Brother

    Posted: 02 May 2018 07:50 PM PDT

So I got my first computer from CyberPowerPC 4 years ago. Although this computer has served me well, I was beginning to get major lag spikes when playing AAA games. That and the fact that I was itching to learn how to build a computer led me here, where I lurked for two weeks and got an idea of what parts people were suggesting overall.

I settled on the following build for myself.

I wanted the "most bang for your buck" build, while still being able to play all the games I wanted at 1080p and 120 fps. I am also an engineer and wanted a computer that could handle CAD work, and I thought Ryzen would be the better option for that (although both Intel and Ryzen would have been fine).

Here is a picture of my finished build

After I finished that build, I realized I had a bunch of leftover parts that were almost a completely usable computer...and thought of my brother. He is graduating from college in two weeks, and moving to another city for his first real big boy job. I realized that building him a computer that he could use to game could potentially be a great way for us to keep in touch after he moves away. Plus, he has always been a bit of a gamer - without a rig to support that hobby. Right now he does the best he can gaming wise with a crappy Best Buy all-in-one.

My old computer from CyberPowerPC was in this tiny crappy case called the zeus mini

I decided to scrap that case, get him a more capable video card, and do other minor upgrades to the essentials. I ended up reusing the processor, SSD, liquid cooler, motherboard, and RAM. The new purchases were the case, more storage, a semi-modular PSU (old one was non-modular), and a new GPU.

Here is the finished build I went with for his "new" computer.

Here is a picture of the finished build for my brother.

Building computers has been a great experience for me, and I can't wait to build more for friends and family. It's really fun, and the hunt & researching of components was almost as fun as the actual building for me.

I would like to thank everyone here who helped me out. I have been trying to give back and help others who have questions and problems just like I have. So you may have seen me posting on a lot of troubleshooting posts. Its only fair!

Thanks again everyone, and feel free to ask any questions you may have!

    Will 500w be enough for a gtx 1070ti and an i5 8400?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:52 PM PDT

I have an evga 500b power supply. I know it's on the cheap end of the spectrum, but I was wondering if I could save a few bucks by using the same psu rather then dishing out a few extra bucks to upgrade. If it's a safety hazard (as in my house may burn down) then I will no doubt replace it with more wattage. Thanks for your help guys :)

Is a quad core a bad idea now?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:45 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

General computer use like microsoft office, youtube and gaming, mostly csgo, overwatch and maybe some single player games like fallout 4 later on.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I don't really care too much about graphics so I'd be fine with with mostly low settings (using a 1080 monitor), however I would like at least 100 fps average in games like overwatch and csgo.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

900 CAD is my abosolute limit, but I would prefer to keep it as low as possible.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm coming from an a10-7800, so pretty much any current cpu should be an upgrade, and it seems like an 8th gen i3 should be enough for what I'm doing, but I'm worried that a quad-core would become obsolete soon now that most cpus are six-cores and that I'm going to regret not spending a bit more for an i5. I'd appreciate any advice.

Any way to improve this build? Also do I need to buy thermal compound for the CPU cooler. Also any fan recommendations for the case?

    Which controller should I get?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 02:35 PM PDT

I currently own a PC and I prefer to have a controller for certain games. I have always wanted a DualShock 4 controller but when I bought one, it couldn't connect to the PC no matter what I did. I know about DS4Windows and everything but I tried everything. And I assumed that the controller won't work unless you connect it to a PS4 first, which I don't own. So which one should I get instead?

Is it smart to start a build by buying parts over long period of time?

    Posted: 02 May 2018 11:32 PM PDT

I basically want to build and buy part by art mainly in order to self-finance a computer for gaming and streaming. Is this a dumb idea or can this work? Or is it significantly better to buy all at once?

Will my build fit in a Corsair 460x??

    Posted: 03 May 2018 02:02 PM PDT

The space in this case looks pretty small. What's it like to build in? Cable management looks fairly difficult due to little space offered behind mobo. Here are my components. Msi z370 Tomohawk Mobi Antec true power 80+ PSU Corsair h150i rgb cooler and Rad Palit gtx 1080ti super jet stream Crucial ballistix sport 2 x 8gb ram

According to pcpartpicker it should fit, however I think it might be tight! Thoughts?

    Multi-display stand that fits a 29" Ultrawide?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 06:29 AM PDT

    Hey gang,

I have a 29" ultrawide (21:9) single display on an articulating arm attached to my desk. I'd like to add one or possibly two side displays. Does anyone know of a multi-display mount (preferably with a clamp base) that would fit the ultrawide in the center? Horizontal width is 27.5".
