List of the best available laptops for gaming and for college.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 02:30 PM PDT

I have noticed that I and a lot of other recommenders here have certain options that meets a lot of criteria for most of you seeking advice so I thought I would collect them here for you for ease of access.

Also, I have recived several requests to make a Canada/UK list similar to this, but the price and availability is so different that it is much harder to build so instead maybe you can take advantage of this MyUS wesbite promo of free trial membership to ship laptops from USA to anywhere else).

*Other useful posts that you should check out *

    ********** Gaming laptops ***************

    300~400 range Acer Aspire E 15.

    • Intel HD Graphics 620 is the best iGPU you can find for this budget which makes the laptop the best option for light gaming on a very tight budget.

    • Full HD (TN) 15.6 screen, which is very rare for this budget range and great for watching movies/videos.

    • Good upgrades available, can go to 16 GB of ram, and with a little more work than usual you can even fit a SSD on it.

    • USB type C which is another rare thing to find on this budget.

I thought I would give you a little more in depth review, so here it goes.

    • Battery life is from 7 to 10 hours of normal non gaming usage.
    • Backlit keyboard only comes on when you touch the buttons to save battery, it is quite.
    • Easily upgradeable, we recommend you add 4GB stick and a SSD if you have the budget for it and it would turn into a perfect laptop (more so than it already was).
    • Minimal bloat-ware, speakers are above average like what you would expect from a laptop, Trackpad doesn't have separate buttons, but they work well, the outer body has a matte finish to it which makes it feel really good even though it is all plastic and doesn't attract fingerprints easily).

    350~400 The newer version

    • Comes with 8th gen i3, and 6GB ram, the rest is the same as the older version, worth the extra cost if you can afford it.

550~650 The Acer Aspire E 15 Not the same model.

    • NVIDIA MX150 which is one of the best for this range but still not great for newer games Benchmark(use the same website to check the benchmarks of the other GPU from the right hand list).

    • 8th Gen i5 quad core CPU, Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, MX 150 GPU (a nice step up from the iGPU 620 on the other acer ).

    • Long battery life (advertised of up to 15-hours of battery life), weight 5.27 lbs, backlit keyboard, USB type C.

    • 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD both are somewhat standards in 600 range so finding them on 500~ range is somewhat a catch.

Here is a little in depth review of it :

    • Same with the cheaper Acer, it is made from plastic, but it feels sturdy, screen comes with anti glare finish so it will work well outside.

    • Battery life is great about 5-8 hours of general usage.

    • Backlit keyboard, quite and comfortable, Trackpad have been getting some mixed reviews, I think it is a software issue, or maybe it is because some people are not used to trackpads.

    • Speakers are good, above average for laptops in this range, the gaming performance is also above average since it is only MX150 but it the best for the budget.

    • Very thin, very quiet (can barely hear the fans), It has room for more ram as well as more SSD, Fingerprint magnet.

    650~750 ASUS TUF

    • One of the cheapest laptops with 8th gen i5 CPU H version, also comes with 8GB ram, 1TB SSHD (technically faster than a normal HDD but didn't look into it thoroughly), 1050 GPU which is good enough for low to mid range gaming.

    700~800 The Nitro 5

    • It comes with Intel Core i5-7300HQ, GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5, 8GB of ram, 256GB SSD.

    • Very good build quality, average battery life (3.5-5 hours of light to moderate usage), Backlit keyboard, USB type C, Full HD IPS.

    750~850 Dell Inspiron 15 7567

    • 7th gen i5 quad core CPU, 1050Ti GPU, 15.6 Full HD IPS screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.
    • backlit keyboard, no USB type C, on the heavy side for this size.

    750~900 ASUS FX503VD

    • One of the cheapest laptops with 7th gen i7 quad core CPU (HQ version), 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 8GB ram.

    • Full HD 15.6 inch screen, Red-backlit keyboard with anti ghosting, and 1050 GPU.

    850~1000 The Dell i7577-5241BLK-PUS

    • 7th Gen Intel Core i5, GTX 1060 6GB GPU, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD.

    • Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen, Thunderbolt 3, USB type C.

    • Great value for money with the current sale, and very big battery which provides good battery life.

    850~950 HP Pavilion Power 15-cb077nr

    • 15" Full HD, Intel Core i7-7700HQ (I believe this is the cheapest option that has this CPU), 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, Windows 10 Home.

    • Advertised battery life of up to 11.5 during minimum usage,

900~1000 The CYBERPOWERPC Tracer II T15300

    • 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core, 8 GB ram, 240GB SSD, 15.6 inch Full HD IPS, 1050Ti GPU.

    • Mechanical keyboard, which is very rare in this budget range.

900~1050 Lenovo Legion Y720 With the current sale this offers great value for money.

    *15.6 Full IPS, 256GB PCIe SSD, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, 8GB ram.

    900~1000 The Eluktronics N857HK1 Pro-X

    • Intel i7-7700HQ Quad Core CPU, GTX 1050 Ti, 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, 8 GB ram.

    • USB type C, backlit keyboard, Full HD IPS 15.6 inch.

    800~950 The Lenovo Y520

    • Intel Core i7 7th Gen 7700HQ, 8 GB ram, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 1050Ti GPU, Full HD IPS.

Here is a more detailed review of it :

    • It can not be charged using USB C.
    • It is not user upgradable(you can not install another 2.5" hard drive along with the ssd).
    • Someone actually took the time to test the download and upload speed using wifi and it had great restuls.
    • Sound quality is another plus with two speakers on each side on the top of the keyboard, and no distortion when you increase the volume, but the bass is a little on the low side.

    • The base has a rubber thingy that lefts it up from the desk to provide better coolling.

    • If it is important to you, it has very good linux support.

    • Laptop is made from plastic as well and it feels sturdy the same way as the Acer VX 15.

    • Screen is quality IPS with very good viewing angles and brightness (as long as you keep it over 80%, some people feel that it gets dim when it is lower than that), it has some glare when used in direct lighting but the brightness is still pretty good, it does come with kinda big bezel and no G-Sync.

    • Keyboard is really good, feels solid, reliable, and responsive but with only red backlighting with two levels and off mode, the numpad on the keyboard is kinda weird though, to make room for full size arrow keys they moved the numbad up, and removed the enter key from the numpad itself.

    • Touchpad has its separate buttons, and very accurate, but it looks odd (check Amazon's pics to see what I mean).

    • It comes with Windows 10 Signature so not much bloatware to slow the laptop down.

    • Battery life is around 3.5-5 hours with light to medium usage ( not gaming of course).

    850~1000 Acer Nitro 5 Spin

    • Usually I wouldn't put that with the gaming laptops, but it is a great option if you also wants a 2 in 1.

    • 8th gen i5 quad core CPU, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, Full HD 15.6 inch screen.

    • 2 in 1 features, with stylus support, somewhat long battery life.

    900~1000 The Eluktronics N850HK1

    • Comes with i7-7700HQ quad core CPU, GTX 1050 Ti, 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, 8 GB ram.

    • High quality Full HD IPS screen, USB type C, backlit keyboard, high quality build, weighs 5.6 lbs great choice if you don't mind installing hard drives on your own, or if you are looking to professional looking laptop.

    • You can also get this configuration with bigger SSD, or this configuration with the bigger SSD and double the ram.

    950~1100 ASUS FX503VM

    600~750 Lenovo Ideapad 700

    • 12gb of ram and 256gb SSD.

    • 960M which is more powerful than the 950M on the lenovo+ SSD is the main advantage this has over the lenovo laptop.

    • You can get it for 100$ less if you are ok with getting the wharehouse deal from Amazon.

    700~800 Dell Inspiron i7559

Each of those has its own benefit aside from the raw power, so if you are interested in one of them let me know and I will explain why they are on the Honorable mentions.

General usage and college usage laptops

FYI: the upcoming laptops are refurbished laptops, which allows for better value for money, and better specs which equals better performance, they are a little heavier, but the smaller screen makes them good college laptops.

    • This is a link for a filtered list of laptops, all refurbished, all with great specs for the price , mostly i5 3rd gen dual core CPU, 8GB ram, either 128GB SSD, or 250HDD or 320HDD, so check the description well before you click the buy button.

    150~200 Thinkpads again

    • Minimal bloat-ware, speakers are above average like what you would expect from a laptop, Trackpad doesn't have separate buttons, but they work well, the outer body has a matte finish to it which makes it feel really good even though it is all plastic and doesn't attract fingerprints easily).

    SUGGEST A LAPTOP $1500 Australia

    Posted: 01 May 2018 01:10 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -max $1500 AUD, purchasing Queensland Australia-

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Good battery life, not a huge fan of 2 in 1, but going to study engineering and IT so I want as much out of the house bang for the buck as I can but not overkill as I have overkill pc at home -

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -Preferably not thick and extremely heavy but I don't mind too much.-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows 10 home-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -around 15"-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -not gaming but as I said going to study engineering and IT and I want something powerful enough to do that.-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -N/A-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -good keyboard preferably backlit red if possible, reliable build quality-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -need an out and about laptop capable of most things maybe a little games but mainly for uni and laying in bed doing work-

Cheap laptop to play GTA IV and mods

    Posted: 01 May 2018 12:35 AM PDT

Hi guys, recently got back into watching LCPDFR videos and finally have decided to want to play it myself. However, my old laptops GPU (Lenovo Yoga 2 13) has crapped itself and no longer works and to replace it would mean to replace the whole motherboard. Anyways, I'm after the cheapest possible laptop (used would be better) to be able to play GTA IV and any mods associated with it. What should I be looking at? Bare in mind this will probably be the only use anyways, so the cheaper the better.

    Thanks!

The famous Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop with GTX 1060 6 GB GPU, Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM & 256GB SSD currently on sale for only $949! Take advantage..

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:14 AM PDT

RE: Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop on sale

The Helios has went on sale several times recently but this is the lowest it has gone to since it's $899 in Black Friday's Deal back in November. Many have been expecting this laptop to drop price, but it stands firm @ $1049 and is likely to return to that price after this sale.

Why is it holding so firm on the price it has been selling for for so long though? The answer is because of it's specs for that price as well as it's steady demand. The Helios has :

    • the powerful 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor (Up to 3.8GHz)

    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM

    • 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen IPS display,

    • Red Backlit Keyboard

    • 16GB DDR4 Memory

    • 256GB SSD

    • Up to 7-hours of battery life

Truth is, there , while there are several laptops around with the GTX 1060 graphics card for under $1049 (the Helios' regular price), the Helios through its heat management and 16 GB RAM advantage as well as the fact that it has the full 1060 card, simple out plays them.

Another reason why the price stays up is because of the demand.. In economics, an increase in demand sees a drop in supply and increase in cost; therefore, because so many people have been buying the Helios at that price point, the manufacturer really , doesn't have a need to decrease its price unless they plan on releasing a new version/ model which they want to take center stage.

Any ways, I chat a bit too much....the point of the matter is that the Predator Helios is on sale ATM for only $949! Get it quickly if you want it!

    [13"-15.6", US, $1200] Suggest me a laptop!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:46 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1200, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life == specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Decently light and small enough to carry around college (15.6" max?)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, Photoshop, programming/coding

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch, League of Legends, PUBG - 1080p, med-high settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality + good screen + good I/O (Thunderbolt, USB-C)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So far I'm debating between the Dell Inspiron 7567 and 7577 models with an i7 but I'm on the fence. The 7567 supposedly has a longer battery life but the 7577 has USB-C and Thunderbolt. The difference between the 1050 Ti and the 1060 is probably not a dealbreaker (not sure) because I don't plan on gaming that hard. The main dilemma here is the:

-larger battery, lighter weight of the 7567

    -futureproofness (Thunderbolt, USB-C, 1060) of the 7577

Please feel free to suggest me many laptops as I have 4 months to choose.

Need something for light gaming, and photoshop/lightroom use.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 11:45 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200$ US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Fuuuuck 2 in 1

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important. I'm downsizing to be semi portable as I might move around a bit more and don't need a crazy desktop. Medium to less important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. W10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" is fine, 17.3 is better. Open minded

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. lightroom and photoshop mostly.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dota, assetto corsa, and emulated melee are the most intensive things I'd run. Preferably on a 144hz external. Don't know much about laptops so not sure if this is unreasonable.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? At least 1TB is a must. I prefer something durable and somewhat modular as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Are there any thinkpads that fit this description? I also really can't stand the gamer laptop look and would prefer to avoid LEDs if possible.

PUBG? Tracer II a solid choice?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 08:43 PM PDT

I am looking for a gaming PC and my budget is around $1350 really need a laptop due to travel and I have my eyes set on this Tracer II as it has an i7, 16gb of ram and a 1070 graphics card, this seems like a really solid deal and I was curious if anyone has any experience with this specific model? I've heard of people have issues with their desktops but I'm not going to let that sway me away.

It will mainly be a Fortnite/PubG/GTA machine and possibly stream from it if possible, that's why so thought the 1070 would be good so even if I drop frames I have more to lay on.

please help me out and give suggestions on whether so should buy it or a different laptop such as an Eluktronics(clevo) or the Acer Predator Helios 300, less is more so even something $1100 would be good if it has 16gb ram, an i7 and SSD.

PS: I had ordered a dell 7577 but sent it back because I needed something more powerful then a i5 and 8gb ram (was too cheap too rather spend the extra money something that will last)

Laptop for Photoshop and light Gaming (US, ~$1000 budget)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 04:30 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000 US (less is great, but I can go slightly over if it's good value)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and portability are most important, I currently have a 2-1 and never use table mode

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately important, will be doing some travel with it

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop and Illustrator EDIT(for graphic design like logos, posters, flyers, etc.) simultaneously while having a web browser open; light gaming; OBS

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I probably won't play any AAA new releases on it since I have a PS4 Pro, but I'd like to play older games in my Steam library, Heroes of the Storm, Diablo 3, at medium settings or good frame rates

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This laptop will be a work device first, and a gaming/fun device second. I tend to always have photoshop and illustrator as well as multiple web tabs open during a typical work day. It would be nice to have something that is somewhat future proof (as much as laptops can possibly be). Finally, I would like something that could handle streaming from my PS4 via a capture card and OBS, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Something with upgradable RAM and/or storage would also be nice, but not necessary.

    College Laptop with Gaming[USA]

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:32 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
Roughly around $900, but can go to $1100, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
No 2in1, 4-5 hours is good, better is better,

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I dont mind 6 lbs of weight due to Lenovo Legion Y520

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      CAD: Solidworks/Creo
      Matlab
Gaming:Medium-high, ultra if possible on 60 fps.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Medium-high, ultra if possible @ 60 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Have the Lenovo Legion Y520: So good build quality and keyboard. Screen is a plus. But not an issue for me. Would like to see if I can get thunderbolt 3.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Have the Lenovo Legion Y520 with i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050 Ti 4gb, 256 gb of ssd + 2tb of hdd, 16gb of RAM. Im still within Costco's 90 day return and noticed that Costco is selling their Dell 7577 in two variants.

    • One is the i5-7300 HQ with 8gb of RAM, 256 gb of SSD, GTX 1060 6gb Maxq for $750.

    • The Other one is the i7-7700HQ, 128gb of SSD plus 1tb HDD, 16gb of RAM, GTX 1060 6gb MaxQ, and a 4k screen for $1100.

    • Alternatively, I could just keep my Lenovo Legion Y520 and continue to ride to out for couple more years?
      The links are
      Dell 7577 with i5
      Dell 7577 with i7
Is it suggested just to return my Lenovo Legion Y520 and get a Dell 7577, or just roll with the Lenovo Legion Y520? IF I do get the dell, is the i5-7300HQ sufficient for Matlab and CAD or do I need a i7-7700HQ?
This laptop will be my main driver. In addition, I do get 4 years of warranty with the laptop. So I guess the 4k Dell 7577 would be a plus, but that means I would have to use a external monitor to game. So what are my options?

OH, USA, Less than $600, Everyday use and light gaming.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600 maximum, OH, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd really like a laptop for school work, everyday use, and light gaming. I'd like the battery to last around 5ish hours.

    • **How important is weight? Doesn't matter.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'd like a windows.

    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? Doesn't matter.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I doubt I would be doing any CAD, video editing, or photo editing. I'd like to run light games like csgo. I would be using programs like microsoft word, and microsoft power point.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? FPS above 30, games such as csgo, fortnite, and WoW.

chrome vs windows, 2 in 1 or 2 separates?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:11 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -US, under $1000-

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -I definitely want a 2 in 1, unless you convince me that it's smarter to just buy a cheap tablet and cheap computer instead of one that does both? -

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -currently on a MacBook Air from circa 2012 - no heavier than this (somewhere around 3lbs I think?)-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Preference is something new, Chrome or Windows are intriguing. Sick of apple, huge android fan-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -12.5 minimum, would like 15in for work but will take 12.5 or similar. Quality screen is important-

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -Nope. the main thing is Citrix for working remotely with lots of text heavy reading-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -android games would be fun, but not really necessary at all-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Nice touchpad is important, typing is not terribly important. I like value for money, so used could be good-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been thinking about a Surface Pro - but afraid to use it as a laptop Surface Book - seems big? Pixelbook - so desirable but perhaps small Asus Flip - have never seen one in person Yoga 900/910/920 - why are there so many?

Too many choices and I can't make a choice. 75% will be citrix at night and the weekends. 25% will be internet browsing so I think chrome OS will be more than sufficient. We have a beat up old Nexus 7 (2013) that needs replacing and my wife is starting to like ipads - hence the 2 in 1 idea.

Looking for laptop for college work + moderate gaming (US buyer, ~$1500 budget)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 03:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States; ~$1500-1700 max (maybe a bit higher if necessary for best durability, performance, etc.)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd like the best specifications for my money, but a good/decent battery life would be ideal (i.e. the laptop can last for a few hours of going to classes, etc., possibly without being charged for a bit).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is fairly important, as I'll need to be carrying the laptop in my backpack quite a bit, so lighter is better. Thinness isn't particularly important to me, but thinner would be nice if possible.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" (or less)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: Heroes of the Storm, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Dark Souls III

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Of the above listed games, I play Heroes of the Storm and World of Warcraft the most, and would like to be able to run those on high graphics settings with good fps. The same goes for Overwatch, though I play it less.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, good keyboard; if possible, minimal 'flashy' accents (i.e. I've looked at the Acer Predator Helios 300, but am not a huge fan of the large engravings or the bright red chassis accents, etc.)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current laptop (purchased 2015) has previously run my games and worked for my college/work purposes very well, but it has recently started having a lot of major issues that multiple tech repair stores haven't been able to identify or fix. It's unusable at this point, and I really need to replace it ASAP. I'm mainly mentioning this because I thought the specs from the laptop I'm trying to replace might be helpful for reference (I'm sorry if this is just excessive/useless info, I just wasn't sure): CLEVO Notebook Barebone P650SG Core i7 (INTEL Core™ i7-4720HQ Quad-Core 2.6 - 3.6GHz TB, HD Graphics 4600, 6MB L3 Cache, 22nm, 47W), Intel HM87, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 4GB GDDR5 Mobile Graphics Card; DDR3 16GB (2 x 8GB) PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz SDRAM SODIMM; CRUCIAL 256GB M600 SSD; HDD 1TB, 7200-RPM, 2.5-Inch, SATA 6 Gb/s.

Laptop To Be Used As An "Entertainment Center" i.e. Hooked Up To A Television Via HDMI

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 06:37 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $300-$500 | US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Mostly best specs for the money. Battery life is less a concern as the machine is likely to remain stationary 80-90% of the time. 2 in 1 capability is NA. If I had to list my #1 desire it's for a machine that will LAST. Quality, durability, and reliability are definitely a factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are mostly irrelevant. This machine will not be traveling often, if at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows though I'm willing to entertain a Chrome OS if it meets the needs.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 13" or larger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would say no heavy lifting program-wise. This machine will be primarily used for streaming, general browsing, the occasional game of Civ, light word processing, etc. In other words pretty basic multipurpose stuff.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly moot. The most sophisticated/demanding game being played is probably Civ.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An optical drive is nice but not required. The same could be said for a touch-screen. I admittedly always like the feel of a good keyboard BUT this machine is going to be mostly on a desk connected to the television and we'll be using wireless keyboard & mouse from afar. An SSD would be nice though is also not necessarily a requirement. It goes without saying it will need an HDMI Out port.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As you've probably guessed this machine is mostly going to be used as a "cable box " SO's term not mine. We will be using the machine to view various streaming services on the big screen television. It will be mostly stationary at a desk in close proximity to the television but will see occasional use around the house. A friend said I should just get a Chromebook with an HDMI and it would probably suit my needs. Would it? I personally would prefer to have a proper laptop but I am not opposed to getting something less expensive if our needs are met. Maybe any suggestions could contain both a laptop and a Chrome alternative...? Anyhow, sorry for being so verbose and I appreciate the help!

    [US] Basic Laptop for Parents

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I can't really think of anything. Like I said, for the parents and they won't be gaming/video or picture editing. I'd like to find them something decent for under $500 or so that will last them a while as long as it's taken care of. I'd also like to avoid Dell, I've never been very fond of their stuff. Thank you for the advice!

I am currently saving my money for this purchase, and I feel like I can go up to about $1,000 USD (a bit higher if I need to), but the lower the better, as I don't want to have to wait too long.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life is nice, but not the most important aspect, as I'll be at home most of the time when I use it. A 2-in-1 form factor/touchscreen would be really nice, although I'd be willing to forgo that if everything else was perfect. Who wouldn't want best specs for the money? :P

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

This is important. I'll probably have it on my lap just as much, if not more than on a desk.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows is preferred. I'd be willing to entertain thoughts of a Mac OS, but I doubt that's gonna fit in my budget.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

From this list, the only thing that I might do is light gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games I usually play are Rocket League, Smite, WoW, and a little Fortnite. I have a gaming desktop already, so this is not the most crucial thing. Medium settings are acceptable for this computer, as long as the frame rate doesn't dip super low. But, again, not the primary use for this computer. If gaming is not in the budget, that's fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'm going to be using this machine to video chat very often, for hours at a time, so a quality webcam is important, if that's possible. Another use for this computer is doing transcription work. I'll need to plug in some headphones, and a quality keyboard would help immensely. I want an SSD for quick booting/loading.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This computer will primarily be used for video chat, web browsing, videos, and typing. If it's powerful enough to run a few games at medium settings, that's a bonus.

In the US, looking for a cheap n easy lightweight laptop <$250

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My maximum budget is 250

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a good battery life. I will be utilizing it to do some light online stuff for school, and editing word documents-- that's really about it. I currently have an ipad pro (school requirement as our exams are on the IPad). It is almost everything I need in a laptop, but some functions (such as Word) are less functional than on a PC. Websites are different too-- I use quizlet frequently, and the IPad doesn't allow me to Ctrl+F if I need to search for a card.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would much prefer a lightweight, slim laptop but due to my price range I am willing to work with anything that allows me to perform my duties

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Maybe slightly larger than 10" would be nice, but no strong preference.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing crazy, I would probably use a mouse but anything else like touchscreen etc. would be an unexpected bonus, at my price range.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. In short, I am looking for something light with a long battery life to just do some online things that the IPad can't easily do, including the ability to edit word documents.

Thank you in advance for any guidance or advice! :)

    Looking for low-cost programming laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:14 PM PDT

Hey guys! Looking for advice on a laptop I need for light programming in Eclipse for my FRC team next year.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd look to spend around $500 but I'll go higher if I need to. Buying in the United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs-for-money. I don't care about 2-in-1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight isn't too important, but thinness would be nice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but I plan on dual-booting with Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming in Eclipse as well as homework

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Having good I/O would be nice, I don't care about the keyboard, and the build quality just needs to be good enough.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm probably going to have to get a lot of RAM, so either something with 8GB or something with expandable RAM would be preferred.

    Thanks in advance.
