    Router with dual wan failover?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:46 AM PDT

Which simple/cheap routers with dual wan "failover" function are out there?

I had an old Asus AC66U which had the option in the menu but people said it didn't work? Have they fixed it?

    FreeNas?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:44 PM PDT

Hey guys, I am extremely new to networking or running a server. I just recently got a new pc and will be turning my old one into a server. I am wanting a NAS for my house. I am also wanting something to be able to play around with a Minecraft server. My question is, would it be better to just install FreeNas directly on my machine or run something such as Linux and use VMware?

Help networking parents property without wires

    Posted: 31 May 2018 12:56 PM PDT

So my parents have a fairly remote lake house. The area only got wired for broadband probably in the last 2 years. They got a cable modem and the internet is pretty good, but the wifi doesn't even reach close to the whole house.

We mostly want to extend the internet so that we can more easily set up some speakers and sonos stations around the property, but it would be nice to do this without having to do any underground wiring. I particularly would like to avoid it because it means they'll go to an audio store to get it done, and no matter how many times i (politely) yell at them not to, they end up getting talked into buying more crap they don't need that they just get frustrated with.

I've been reading things on here about getting professional grade wireless access points, in particular Ubiquiti Nanostations/CPE; all these are things I'm kind of familiar with, but I'm wondering if anyone could give me help on more accurately planning out how I could extend the range of wireless internet on my parent's property without burying cable.

Here's a very *very* rough drawing of the layout of the place. The yellow is where I'm trying to get internet to reach in particular.

    Help with port forwarding.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:30 PM PDT

I am trying to install a gate controller that I can access remotely. I have a static IP address from my internet provider and I gave the controller a static IP on my network (192.168.1.172).

I'm trying to set up the port forwarding on my router (Linksys WRT1200AC), but I don't know if I am doing it correctly or not. Here is the instruction sheet that I am following: [link]. Here is a screenshot of what I entered: [image].

When I use the setup software and point it to http://STATICIP:4066, it is not able to find anything. Is there something more in my router settings I need to do, or did I set up my port forwarding incorrectly?

    Router match for Fios Gigabit

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:20 PM PDT

I have just gotten FIOS gigabit. Where my ONT comes in is a lousy place for a wireless router, yet I have an 8 port switch there, which feeds my cat 6 and my wireless AP further away. I have an 802.11ac AirPort Extreme that did a pretty good job with the routing functions in terms of speeds (reached around 800s dl/ul wired) however it seems to constant cut out for some reason. I have an old ACtiontec gigabit router that only seems to hit 500s UL/DL wired but is rock solid and doesn't cut out.. so the long and short of it, does anyone have a recommendation for either how I could fix my AE or a good wired router that will fully take advantage of my gigabit ethernet network...

    thanks

Need help port forwarding on Arris dg1670a?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 05:03 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm new here, and I need some help port forwarding on this router. I've tried so many things to try and get my ports forwarded but nothing seems to work.

To clarify, I'm trying to get them forwarded so my friends can connect to my host and play some Left 4 Dead 2. I've done everything I can think of correctly, using the "virtual servers" and inputting my correct ip address as well as the correct ports, but nothing seems to work for me, as they can't connect to the server.

I've already tried setting up a static ip using PortFoward Utilities software, and when that didn't work I set up my mac address to always use a specific ip, but I have no luck. Does anyone have any advice for this router?

    Here are some screenshots;

Have gigabit internet, why is my laptop unable to reach close even wired?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 01:07 PM PDT

Just got gigabit internet with Sonic today and unwired with my laptop it's around 200~ mbps download, 100~ mbps upload which is understandable. But when I connected my laptop with an ethernet cable and with 5Ghz its still only 300-400 mbps download, but upload is around 500. I thought I would be able to reach at least 600-700 mbps speeds wired but it only increased relatively marginally. Can anyone explain? Thanks

[Help] SSH (client) randomly can't connect locally anymore

    Posted: 31 May 2018 04:25 PM PDT

Hey all, so I'm about at my wits end with trying to fix this. Hopefully someone can help or point me in a direction of a resource that could... because I'm coming up empty.

I have a MacBook Air that I use as my main computer, and control a couple of pi's connected locally to my router/modem. One of those pi's I have configured as a VPN and also have the SSH server accessible over the internet (on a non-standard port with password auth disabled). I have always been able to connect to this pi from inside my home network (using the local ip - pi@192.168.1.xx), and from outside of my home network using my routers external ip and having it forwarded along.

Everything was working fine last night, but then today, I am no longer able to SSH from my Macbook Air to my pi's (either of them) using the local ip address (pi@192.168.1.xx). The pi's are working fine tho, because I was using the VPN server...

So I tried a number of things:

From my Macbook Air: * I was able to SSH into the pi using my external ip address, while connected to the same network. * I was also able to SSH into the pi over a separate VPN connection, again using it's external ip address.

From a different machine on the same network: * I was able to SSH into the pi using a Linux machine and using the local ip denomination - and that worked just fine.

I cannot ping either pi from my Macbook Air.

Running nmap from the Macbook Air just returns that the pi's are down.

I did make one change to the pi last night, and that was configuring Pi-Hole to listen on eth0, instead of only on the VPN tun0 interface. That was up and working, and is still working for any devices other than my Macbook Air. But this wouldn't explain why my Macbook Air is unable to SSH into any of my pi's...

I'm not too versed in reading log output, tho I skimmed through a bit. Nothing stood out as overtly informative.

Is anyone able to make sense of this? Or point me in a direction that could help... I'm happy to provide any log information if that will be useful...

For example - trying to SSH from Macbook Air returns this verbose output:

    MacBook-Air:~ User$ ssh pi@192.168.1.82 -p 522 -vvv OpenSSH_7.6p1, LibreSSL 2.6.2 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: /etc/ssh/ssh_config line 48: Applying options for * debug2: ssh_connect_direct: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to 192.168.1.82 port 522.

    Xfinity Blast 250mpbs: SB6190 & AC1750 Still Top Choice under $200?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:41 PM PDT

    Hi,

Trying to set my parents up with a solid modem router combo so they can cut the cord.

I currently am running the same internet, and have had solid speeds (~280 mbps via ethernet) on Xfinity Blast connection, SB6190 and AC1750. However, we live in a smaller house and I want to be sure their wifi will be strong enough.

For $200 or less, is there a better option with the latest AC wifi and reliability?

Edit: Thank you for the advice on modem. Considering my parents are using super antiquated technology, I think I may give them my SB6190 & AC1750 and may upgrade my current setup instead.

What would you recommend for a router/access point setup for ~$120?

Newbie looking for some help setting up a new network for my home.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:32 PM PDT

My current router is dying, and I have decided to redo the networking in my home. As I am somewhat new to this I have several questions that I was hoping to get some help on.

My house is 4300 sqft over 3 floors, with lots of concrete construction. Here is a basic drawing of the house floor plan.

Note: I am in B.C and currently have Telus fibre 150/150.

    1. I do not have any ethernet wiring in the walls, and the area I am in has a lot of Wifi traffic. So I am planning to use MOCA (This one) to link to locations where I will place Ubiquiti Lite Access Points. My question is how do I provide the power injection that the Ubiquiti AP needs? I can't transmit power over coax (but there are electrical outlets nearby the coax ports).

    2. I plan to place AP's at each spot where there is a Coax port (The playroom already has a Moca adapter on it to go to my Roku - so I would just change that to go to an AP) The Coax port on the main floor I plan to put on the ceiling which will line it up with the third floor (There are no coax ports on the third floor) and hopefully provide wifi up there. So three AP's total - one per floor.

    3. I am not sure what kind of router to use or how I should set it up. I currently have a really old switch which I plug all the stuff in the computer room into (NAS, Printer, VOIP phone, Main computer, Small-form computer for Plex server). From reading the other posts in this subreddit it seems that people really favor the EdgeRouter 4 but I am open to suggestions. I would like some kind of ad-blocking happening at the router level - but from what I've read if I install pfsense on the EdgeRouter then the Ubiquiti software won't be able to manage it. I would prefer not to add a separate computer to run the ad filtering. If possible I would prefer to have it done at the router level. My current setup idea is something like this Also - I found this - has anyone used it and can verify that it works well with the EdgeRouter 4?

    4. I have 7 items plugged into my current switch. Can or should I still use it? Or should I replace it with something else?

Thanks for any suggestions (I took several from this post)

Question about using work docking station with home laptop

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:10 AM PDT

So my work supplied me with a cisco router and dell docking station, which is connected through a usb c cable to my work laptop.

I have a home laptop which i'd like to use and connect to the usb c cable (so that i can use my dual monitors/keyboard/mouse/etc), but I am worried about the cisco router being connected.

What is the easiest way to make sure that work/cisco router does not see my home laptop/personal internet traffic? (besides unplugging the cisco router)

Do I just disable the NIC and use the WIFI?

Internet speed problems with Router and Powerline

    Posted: 31 May 2018 10:13 AM PDT

Hi, up until now I have used a 1000mpbs Netgear Powerline adapter which combined with a 100mbps old Netgear router has sufficed in providing 100mbps download speeds to two computers.

I decided to upgrade the router as we upgraded our internet package to a Netgear R6220 (1200mbps) which once set up in the proper was using the AP settings only gives us 50mbps and no more. I've tested just the Powerline adapter and it gives me 300mbps when not plugged into the router.

Could any think of a reason why this might happen? I thought maybe one might bottleneck the other however personally wouldn't even know where to begin troubleshooting it.

The admin pages for the router actually pick the make and model of the powerline up in the network map so I couldn't think of it as being unsupported.

    Any advice is welcome.

Best way to combine two connections at home - what do I need?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:48 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've got two 4G connections and use Speedify on my PC to get double speed. However, it only works for the PC since it needs the program to work (or app on phone).

I want this to work for all my devices at home, but at the very least, my PC and TV.

This works on my PC since it's connected with wifi to one connection and ethernet (to a 4G router) to the other.

Since the TV (or daughter's PC for example) only have one way to connect (wifi for TV and ethernet for daughter), I need something "in-between" that combines the connections and then shares it.

What do I need to get all devices connected to the combined connection?

This is what I have (or already know I need):

    • 2x 4G connections
    • 2x 4G routers
    • Something that combines them and then shares that (phone/PC?)
    • Whatever device needs Internet

Unfortunately, Speedify only works on Windows, Mac, Iphones and Androids, so no Linux firewall dist for example (though there might be an alternative to Speedify on Linux?), but there might be some router that supports this out-of-the-box or something? And is there something else I need?

    Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Edit: I'm just brainstorming right now, but what if I use, say, a Windows PC with two ethernet ports and on-board wifi? I could have Speedify on that PC and connect to the 4G routers with wifi and one ethernet cable. The remaining ethernet port could share that PC's connection to a switch (or router?) for other devices to connect to. Would that work?

How to use Nginx with different physical machines?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:47 AM PDT

I have many VMs running with different web servers and such. I want to be able to use the SSL port on more than one machine, which is where Nginx comes in. I have looked and dug, and I do not understand if you can achieve using different physical VMs with Nginx.

    I have a:

--CentOS machine running Apache as my main (no virtual hosts configured) website. IP of 10.40.1.12 internally, reachable at kodysalak.com --Windows Server 2016 with exchange on it. IP of 10.40.1.17 internally, reachable at mail.kodysalak.com --Windows Server 2016 with Spiceworks' HelpDesk software (Apache). IP of 10.40.1.14 internally, reachable at help.kodysalak.com

Those are the hosts that use 80/443. I have a separate CentOS machine running Nginx with no configuration done with it. IP of 10.40.1.18.

I am brand new to nginx and reverse proxy in general, you might have to hold my hand to help me.

Network Diagram - will this work?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 06:44 AM PDT

    Hi all-

I'm planning to share my 100 Mbit/s internet connection with my brother, who lives across the street. We have a clear line of sight of each other's windows, so I've bought two Ubiquiti NanoStations Loco M5 to create a wireless bridge: https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostationm/

I have a wireless modem/router and I want connect my pc, smart tv, game console and the Nanostation with CAT6 cable, using several switches. On my brother's side we'll connect everything with switches and CAT6 as well, and we'll include a wireless AP so he has WiFi.

Where I split the connection between my house and his, I was thinking of using a managed switch with QoS, so we can make sure he gets enough bandwidth to stream HD to his television.

    I've created a network diagram: https://imgur.com/a/y1MbZta

Would be grateful if you guys could take a look and let me know if this will work, or if you have any suggestions, before I buy a bunch of switches and CAT6 :-) Needless to say I'm quite new at this, so all help is appreciated.

Struggling to figure out how to combine unbound and DoH with my pihole

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:42 AM PDT

I currently have a raspberry pi 3 b+ running as my DHCP server, using pihole and unbound acting as a recursive DNS resolver. Setting that up was easy enough, but the issue that keeps bugging me is when an uncached domain is being looked up, that connection is insecure, isn't it? Has anyone had success with using both unbound and some way of securing DNS lookups?

Suggestions for VLAN in my home network

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:09 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'd like to setup a few VLANs in my home network to decrease the security risk of having some services publicly exposed to the Internet (and, to be fair, mostly because it's fun to do).

    Here's my VLAN plan:

VLAN #1: Guest VLAN. Can only access to the Internet, cannot communicate with VLAN #2 and #3. Mostly for guests / untrusted computers VLAN #2: "DMZ", contains all the service exposed to the Internet. Cannot communicate with VLAN #1 or #3, but has inbound and outbound connection to the Internet. VLAN #3: "Admin" VLAN, contains my laptop / trusted machines. Can access the Internet and VLAN #2.

I was thinking to implement it the following way:

    • One Wifi network "Guest" plugged on a port of a small managed switch assigned to VLAN #1 (guest)
    • One Wifi network "Admin" plugged on a port of a small managed switch assigned to VLAN #3 (admin)
    • Machines in the DMZ directly plugged to the switch, on a port assigned to VLAN #2 (dmz)

    • Switch plugged to my ISP's router

At this point, my questions are:

    • Does my network segmentation make sense to you?
    • Do you have any suggestions or do you spot inconsistencies?
    • Could I have two Wifi networks run by the same physical access point?
    • Do you have some hardware recommendations for the access point and managed switch? I was looking at the Netgear GS108E for the switch, but I'm not 100% sure it has support for trunk ports . Suggestion welcome.

    Thank you!

Is it safe to use the default Wifi password on my Netgear R6400?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 01:20 AM PDT

Just factory reset my router to get rid of the VPNFilter malware and I'm going through setting it back up. I noticed that my roommate who set it up has been using the wifi password that's printed on the router. The password seems secure and unique, and a quick google search for it pulled up no results, can we continue using it, or should I ask him to change it?

Want to upgrade to Fios Gigabit, so they are switching me to Cat 5. I will need a wireless bridge solution for my office.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 10:29 AM PDT

So I want to upgrade my Fios to Gigabit. To do this, Fios is going to change my coax to a cat 5 connection. They are planning on dropping to Cat 5 in the living room behind the TV. I live in an apartment so getting a Cat 5 drop back from the living room to my office is a no go. So I will need to upgrade my equipment.

I currently use Fios's router, but I won't need it when I switch to Cat5. I was thinking of simply buying new two routers and having one of them configured to be a bridge. I heard Mesh Networking might accomplish the same thing, and be a better option.

Anyone have any recommendations on what I should buy for a good router wifi/bridge combo for Gigabit internet?

    Modem power cycling automation?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:23 AM PDT

What is the best option to automatically power cycle a modem in the event it freezes up? Obviously anything conventional requires the internet to send commands, which a frozen modem precludes, even if the rest of your network is fine.

So we are into either a "power cycle at 2am every day" or "ping a server list and power cycle if you don't see them" territory.

    Suggestions?

    ER-X upgrade to ER-4 or USG-Pro?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:48 AM PDT

I currently have a ER-X with 2 AP-AC-Pros on a home network that sees pretty heavy use (~75 leases). Internet is currently 300/30 cable. When I use QoS on the ER-X I see some throttling. I am planning to upgrade to symmetric gigabit Internet soon so I am trying to decide on a router upgrade. The new ER-4 looks like a nice upgrade but having all the fancy UI metrics by using all Unifi gear is tempting. I am just wondering if the ER-4 or USG-Pro will offer enough of a performance upgrade over the ER-X to warrant the purchase. Or if there is another option that will work better.

Will upgrading to a newer router allow more devices on wifi?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:22 AM PDT

Currently, I'm running my home wifi on a TP-LINK Archer C9 router, dual band, with DD-WRT firmware. We have been steadily adding more and more devices (wifi bulbs, computers, phones, tablets, etc.) and it appears that the network has become so congested that some of our devices will no longer connect to the network.

I disconnected most of the devices in the house and the devices that would not connect found the signal immediately and connected flawlessly.

Would upgrading my router fix the congestion issue, or is there a better (read cheaper) alternative?

Archer C7 vs C9. Does Beamforming make a huge difference for local streaming and overall performance?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:20 AM PDT

I'm currently looking for a good router to pair with the modem provided by my ISP, which sucks. I've got a 120mbps connection, and intend to connect 3 laptops and a 4K smart tv through wi-fi. It's a small apartment, but there are 1-2 walls between devices and some neighbor wi-fi signal.

I can get the C7 for U$ 107, and the C9 for U$131 (I'm not in the US). Despite the USB3 port and slight increased bandwidth, the only difference I could gather is that the Archer C7 has 3+3 antenas while the C9 only has 3 antenas plus beamforming technology, but I haven't found any direct comparison between the two.

What would be the best performer for 4K Netflix and some local game streaming using Steam Link/Moonlight? Is the C9 worth the price difference? Would it be a bit more future-proof due to its release date?

    Thanks in advance!
