What do you do when there is a problem that you can't fix no matter how hard you google?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:19 PM PDT

In work or while coding in your spare time. Say there is a problem where you google the error and you get zero relevant results. Or you try the solution and it doesn't work. You post the error on Stack Overflow and nobody answers it.

What then? What do you do?

Best advanced RecyclerView library in town

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 02:11 PM PDT

The problem: RecyclerView is awesome but it doesn't scale well for nested and complex list views. Imagine someting like Netflix (main item + lists of horizontal lists + random items like banners between lists)

    ![Netflix](https://www.clintonfitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Netflix-on-Android.png)

I'm researching for a new project the best possible library and found these best contenders, but they all have pros/cons imho:

What is your experience with any of these libs? I want to find real world feedback, away from the nice readmes that promise perfect, easy and bug-free libraries 🤔

Android Studio 3.0 and Master Password

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:40 AM PDT

In AS 2.3 it was working fine and easily, I could input the master password once per session and generate as many signed APK as I wanted.

Since AS 3.0 it doesn't work anymore (or the process has changed and I am stupid enough that can't get a clue on how to use the Master Password anymore).

Could anyone teach me? or is it really broken since AS 3.0?

    What are good advertising/boosting/reviewing services?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:47 PM PDT

I have released an app called Secure Photo Viewer. I feel like it was received very well, quite a lot of tech sites wrote about it and it pretty much boomed and got to 5800 users within 40 days.

But since then, I get very few installations, maybe 5 per day, and that number is shrinking. It's probably mainly because the name is something you rarely search for and discover randomly, unlike when you look for apps called music player.

The functionality is also something you probably don't think you want, unless someone tells you it exists. The app itself seems fine though, it has a rating of 4.3 and over 50% of people keep it after 30 days. The conversion rate is about 22%, which could be better.

Most viewers find it on the play store, about 600 per month. The rest comes from URLs or other sources. I feel like this is the number that should be increased.

The problem is I have never done marketing nor do I know how to do it. I suck at art and writing, so I wouldn't even know how to improve the play store page unless someone can help me. I am now looking for legitimate services that can help me get more real users, wheter through boosting, reviewing my app or putting up advertisements. But what are those services that work? I heard for example that Facebook is terrible and you will get a lot of fake installs. I also don't want to spend too much, as the app isn't making any revenue, it's just a hobby. Let's say how can I invest 60$ the best way. And how much will this help me?

Overscan creates unwanted border in some apps

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:25 PM PDT

    I ran

    Process process Runtime.getRuntime().exec("wm overscan 0,80,0,0");

But in some apps like whatsapp or my launcher it creates an additional border that I don't want. Is there anything I can do against it? In the attaches screenshot it's black.

Also, it would be great if I found a way to change the overscan color, I don't really want to use the status bar color but a black instead.

Starting from zero. What stack should I go with?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 02:01 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm starting on Android from zero. I've never developed or managed an app on that OS.

There are so many frameworks and languages that can be used. Can you save me some time?

    What stack would you recommend?

Here is what matters to me:

    • Large developer community
    • Developers looking for jobs on that stack if I need to hire
    • Native is preferred. Not javascript running in an iframe running in an app.

    What doesn't matter:

    • 3D / VR (we don't do that)
    • Cross-platform

    Thanks!

    Android Data monetization

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:40 AM PDT

    Hello there!

I'm looking for alternative ways of monetizing Android applications(not involving ads as I'm using them already). I've seen that there are companies that monetize user data such as oneaudience.com. Do you know any other companies such as that one, that are google-compliant and preferably working with some bigger applications (500K downloads+ to prove that they are trustworthy)?

    Thanks in advance

Best way to architect my app?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:35 PM PDT

TL;DR: how do I store public google calendar events in firebase to eventually display in app along with user submitted feedback.

I'm working on an app (still learning android) and not sure the best way to set up my next project.

I have a bunch of public google calendars that I want to pull the information into my app and display/filter the events and eventually want to allow users to provide feedback/submit pictures, etc for the events.

I'm planning on using firebase (want to learn it), so my question is... should I store the events in firebase? Or just grab them real time whenever someone accesses the app? If I do store them in firebase(probably the best solution), any suggestions/directions to connect the calendars to firebase?
