Question from a newbie: Is 1.1.1.1 better than using my ISP's DNS? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:54 PM PDT Let's just say I'm pretty new to networking. I decided to switch the DNS on my router to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, but I'm not sure what kind of impact will this make. My question is as follows:
If you guys have any advice on what I should do, that would be greatly appreciated. :) [link] [comments] |
Modem recommendations for 400/10 internet? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 05:33 PM PDT Right now I am using the rented Comcast modem/router but want to get away from the extra payments and have more freedom with my small home lab. I plan on getting the USG at some point with an AP, but I don't know what modem to get. Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:19 PM PDT Hello reddit, recently I had a big issue with opening ports for certain game wich uses NAT system. In game I have my nat strict so I was reaching for technical support to figure out my problem and after 2 moths of setting ports opening up DMZ disabling FW etc. Nothing had helped me so. So I am asking you if you have any ideas what can I do more or specifically how can I trace where a certaing ports are blocked? What I have done: 1) Set up my IP to static then port forwarded all ports as game developers are suggesting (I am not rly a noob I done it right) 2) Disabled all firewalls and antivirus programs 3)Called my ISP twice about ports if they are blocked or they are open response was that all ports are open and not blocked by them 4)Downloaded PortQuery and checked port 3074 and 3075 via my external IP and its blocked, then checked twitce with https://portchecker.co/check no luck either 5)Checked my Upnp if port is being opened by service request and well sometimes I see port active and sometimes not? bit shady well so I decided to test it without Upnp and no luck either Well I am really confused whos on blame, my incompetence to solve this or ISP is just making fun of me? Currently trying so called Wireshark for packet sniffing but I am a bit a newbie to this tool Please whatever you think might help post it below thank you (if any screenshot or detail needed I will gladly send it) [link] [comments] |
Need help with Networking Question Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:44 PM PDT Could someone check my answers if possible? What would be DNS1 and DNS2? On a small home network, the internal IP of 192.168.50.1/24 is assigned to the router. DHCP has been disabled on the network. The internet connection has also been verified as working. What IP settings would you give a computer on the network: IP Address: 192.168.50.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.50.1 DNS1: DNS2: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 02:30 PM PDT Any router recommendations for my 30 down cable modem? Mostly confined to my room. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT My garbage ISP-issued combo unit (TP-Link WD8960N V7) needs to go. It freezes up and/or reboots all the time and is just generally a piece of shit. I know nobody here will recommend a combo unit, so what basic ADSL modem and router combo would r/homenetworking recommend? Nothing fancy, all I'll have connected to the router is one desktop machine via ethernet and a laptop which does not need any sort of appreciable wireless speed; my rubbish australian internet connection hardly exceeds 500kB/s anyway. Network significantly slower with newer modem Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:43 PM PDT I have been renting a ubee ddm3513 from Comcast for the last few years. Looking to cut costs so I bought a Tp-Link TC-7610. With the Ubee modem, I get about 120 Mbps down. Switching to the Tp-Link modem, I only get 85 down. Is there something that could be restricting my connection somewhere? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:42 PM PDT Image: https://imgur.com/a/70ZZe It's locked with the same connectors from the wall and into the modem... Not sure how to remove without potentially breaking something. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:41 AM PDT I've setup an old laptop with OPNsense to play with in my lab. Everything works great, except whenever I reboot the machine, the USB NIC adapter will be unable to connect until I actually reconnect it manually. I see I've tried setting a boot delay of 10 and 30 seconds, but nothing seems to work. Anyone know how I can get my USB NIC to connect on boot with OPNsense, or at least point me to what I should be looking for? Many thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:01 AM PDT Hello all, I got 3 xbox running at the same time on router EA9500. I troed everything to get open nat on these consoles. Static ips, opening ports (which changed it from moderate to strict for some reason). What can i do to open nat? [link] [comments] |
How do I go about connecting a router to my VDSL modem/router? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:38 AM PDT Hi everyone, I have a VDSL modem/router which becomes sluggish when a few devices are connected to it. So I want to purchase an external router like the Archer C7 and just use the modem/router as just a modem. But I really need help on how to go about setting this up. I have a static IP from my ISP configured on the modem/router and most tutorials on the internet only show how to set it up using bridge mode. I can purchase a new vdsl modem/router but would like to go with a standard router instead. Any sort of help will be appreciated. My current modem/router is Beetel 777VR1. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:25 AM PDT Hey, I'm trying to plug in dsl modem, but the cable has been cut of and only blue and white cables go from it right now (https://imgur.com/a/fy7IV). Is this supposed to work, or do I need to get new cable? [link] [comments] |
Does swapping out an ISP issued modem offer any other benefits besides cost reduction? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 07:43 AM PDT I've been considering swapping out my Comcast issued modem for a third party one so that I could ditch the cost on my bill for it, but I've been having some trouble with making the commitment to following through on it. I've rarely had my ISP issued one go bad (I used their online restart feature once for it), and my Internet seems to be plenty fast enough with it (I think I peak out currently at 15MB/s). I know having my own modem pays for itself in about a year or so, but I've always struggled when it comes to selecting what hardware to get, with all the compatibility and quality stuff to worry about. Would love to hear some stories from others about how well managing their own modem has worked for them. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Can someone explain these Pingplotter results to me? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:28 AM PDT For the last two days I have the problem of getting extremely high ping while online gaming. Out of nowhere the ping goes up to about 500ms and a few minutes later it´s back to normal, only to go up again in the next few minutes. Can you see on the Pingplotter results if it´s a problem on my end or my ISP's? Thanks in advance. https://imgur.com/a/TjSvv [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Apr 2018 05:42 AM PDT I'm having some issues with my network setup and wondering I someone can take a look at my configuration. Maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong. ER-x: eth1 192.168.30.1/24 and eth1.80 192.168.80.1/24. Both have DHCP servers configured. TP-Link Managed switch: port 1 trunk tagging VLANs 30 and 80 to ER-x eth1. Port 8 to TP-Link 5 port switch port 5. Trunk tagging 30 and 80 as well from main switch. TP-Link 5 Port: Port 4 to desktop access VLAN 30. Pulls IP in .30 network via DHCP. Port 3 to laptop access VLAN 80. Pulls IP in .30 network via DHCP. When I create the trunk on Port 1 to the ER-x I can't ping out of .30 network on the desktop. [link] [comments] |
Getting network into garage in rental Posted: 01 Apr 2018 05:40 AM PDT Interested to see if anyone has a clever idea to get my server running in the garage ? I have tried powerline adapters but the latency and dropped packets on old wiring was causing me way too much trouble. If it was my own house I would just run cable and do it properly but I don't have that luxury being in a rental atm. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:58 AM PDT Hello, I have been having some problems with random latency spikes lately. It looks like I'm making some progress, changing lots of settings and messing with drivers, etc. Now I'm wondering if there is a way I can tinker with settings to make sure nothing is holding back speeds to a specific, trusted website. See, I make my living by teaching online, via video chatting through a website. I want this website to have uninterrupted, priority access in the interest of achieving the best latency times and highest stability possible. How can I go about making sure nothing gets in the way? Bonus question: Sometimes, while video chatting, I need to switch windows/tabs for a minute. When I do this, my ping on the video chat site goes from ~70ms, to ~500ms. I don't want that. I want this website to always take first priority with everything . I appreciate any advice! [link] [comments] |
Would using a Cat5e to connect a router to a modem be a bottleneck? Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:33 PM PDT I'm not very experienced with networking, so, bear with me. I'm thinking of attaching 4 Cat6a cables from my PC to a switch, and 4 from my server to the same switch. Then, 2 of the same cables would go to a router. Then, a Cat5e cable would go to the modem. Would this be a bottleneck in any way? What are the biggest differences between Cat5e and Cat6a? Also, I'm thinking of using this many cables to open up more channels for data to travel. I'm not 100% sure this would work, but, I saw something about it on LTT. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
