    Simple Questions - April 01, 2018

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Ryzen 5 1600, what mobo and ram should I go for?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:03 AM PDT

All the reviews are really wishy-washy on compatability with the ryzen and the motherboards and the ram and I'm just not knowledgeable enough to figure out what I need.

Can anyone please leave me a little advice or drop some knowledge on me. I also have an m.2 ssd so, the motherboard would have to support that as well.

I appreciate anyone who goes out of their way to help me out with this.

People who use two screens for gaming, do the frames not bother you?

So basically eli5 on why gaming with two screens where the frames cut through the crosshair is viable?

Need help finalizing APC that is highly mobile and I can use with 6 other buddies.

    Build Help/Ready:

Hello, please help. I am in need of suggested parts and loud-out for aPC. I saw from this sub's banner and FAQ that this would be the right place to get purchase advice on aPC.

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I need aPC for maneuvering around sandy environments while also being versatile enough to sustain cross country deployment.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I need a minimum of a 10" screen for operator. As for performance, it needs to have a minimum range from a single charge of 200 miles and should be able to sustain a LAN of 6 people inside as well.

I don't mind what PSU, GPU, CPU, RAM is installed in the controller so long as it has dual redundant processing ability for failure if anything gets toast.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Maximum £1.2 million GBP budget. I know it's low. I think you guys can do wonders here though.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

My potential build for aPC is the following:

    • Base APC: M2 Bradely
    • Computer: BAE Land Systems provided minimum dual redundant controller with automated turret control
    • Armor: Default Integrated 5083 Aluminum. Saving up for spaced reactive armor (ERA) in future when next paycheck comes and after approval from government
    • Primary Armament: 25mm M242 Chain Gun
    • Secondary Armament: None (lack of funds)
    • Power Supplication Unit: Old 400hp legacy diesel engine

The build as so is ok but im worried it is too top heavy as I am running out of funds. You guys here seem to be good on changing configurations around to save some dough. I thought of ditching the primary armament so I can beef up the primary supplicant unit to allow the APC better movement.

I'm fine moving to the red side, green side, or blue side as you call it here. It doesn't have to be a Bradely platform. I can go with a BMP if you have any good suggestions on those.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Must adhere to proper import/export laws and treaties.

Ryzen 5 1600 build what RAM to buy

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:07 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm planning to build a new Ryzen 5 1600 build. I'll mainly use my computer for gaming and programming (PHP, Java and Unity3D). I already have a graphics card and I don't plan to change it (I have a NVIDIA GTX 750 TI). I would like to know if this ram "Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15" is good with a Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 motherboard or an Asus prime b350-plus and which one of the two motherboards are better in your opinion.

    Thanks!

Edit: my budget for the RAM is around €100

Edit 2: I know the RAM is compatible with the Asus mobo but I can't find anything about the gigabyte one, do you guys know if it's compatible?

Replacement card for Geforce gtx 760?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:25 AM PDT

It seems as though my card is crapping out and unfortunately I can't afford to replace with the same one. What is a great cheaper alternative that would I be able to use?

I'm extremely confused when it comes to PCs so if I need to provide any additional information please let me know. Thank you

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    OH YEAHHH

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I got a 5-6 year old HP laptop with an i7-3630QM (4c 8thread, not bad) and GT 650 graphics (yikes) that is finally dying after a lot of beating (four years of shuffling around campus included). Can't suck it up to pay 200% msrp for a decent VC but need something to get by.

Mostly low-end gaming for now (all you can do with RX 560 anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), I'm a /r/patientgamers hardcore lurker and I mostly play Civ V and Skyrim. Probably would transition to playing NBA 2K on here too; currently play 2K (2K14 of course) on XBox 360.

Also some CPU-light programming (fuckin' around with NBA an-uh-lih-tuks) and the occasional 1080p-guided "forearm strengthening session."

I'm aiming to wait out crypto-inflated VC prices (I've played Civ for 5 years on GT650M graphics, I think I'll be fine) and then grab a GTX 1060 equivalent at that time; i.e. the 1060 might be a little outdated at that time. I understand that forecasting the correct choice at that time is tough, you'll probably see a new post from me in a 3-6 months.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I've done 1080 low/medium 30FPS for 5 years on the old guy and I'm OK with keeping that until I get a card. I've seen that if you have 2x8GB RAM running 2666+ speed, allocating them 2GB with the 2400G listed, you should be able to get 45FPS in 1080p/medium for Skyrim which would be more than enough. I do want to make sure the hardware I have here would eventually allow me to plug a 1060 or equivalent and play 1080p high at 50-60 FPS. I think I've finally earned that :)

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Loosely prefer 800, pretty hard cap at 1000 (not incl. VC at later date) including peripherals listed. Already have a mouse and speakers, wouldn't mind a mouse upgrade though. I'll be using my interest-free loan to Uncle Sam aka tax return shakes fist to finance this, and I'd like to not interrupt my cashflow.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The U-S-of-A, baby!

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

S/O PCPartPicker, you the real MVP in this shindig.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Obviously picking 2400G for decent interim graphics. I don't see OC in my future, or at least for this build, so no extra cooler. Also picked the ASRock mobo over MSI's Tomohawk based on poor reviews, does /r/buildapc agree? Lastly, just thinking OS + a few heavy games + conda env. on the SSD, HDD for everything else. Go down to 120GB or keep 250 for futureproof? IK it's nitpicking.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Nah I'm gonna leave it, just to S/O the mods for doing a great job

Odd ways to get some cable management?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:15 AM PDT

Has anyone here ever used some unsavory or crafty methods to manage their cables? The thought came to me when I was thinking of twist ties and then looked over and realized that loaves of bread use twist ties too. It was never really something I payed attention to. Has anyone ever used those or other things that are unconventional in their PC?

Is the 1050Ti worth the extra 80 CAD over the 1050?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:15 PM PDT

I've heard that future games would be running at 4gb of VRAM rather than 2gb of VRAM. 1050 has 2gb of VRAM, unlike the 1050TI.

Is the 1050TI worth the few extra money?

Stripped screw stuck to motherboard standoff

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:39 PM PDT

I was moving my motherboard to another case and the screw came out with the motherboard standoff and the screw seems to now be stripped. Is there any cheap way of unscrewing the two screws from one another? I can't install this into my new case without fixing the issue. The rubber band method doesn't seem to be working. R5 1600 vs R7 1700 1440p / 144hz

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Hi! Just wondering what the general consensus is for 1440p / 144hz between an R5 1600 and an R7 1700? Is the 1700 necessary or will the 1600 suffice? This is for strictly gaming. I already have a B350 motherboard, so Intel isn't something I'm interested in. Thanks!

    GPU Help

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:27 PM PDT

Wow.... Lots of problems lately with my first build, but I got my PC to turn on, now I removed a GPU and Hard drive from a prebuilt PC, games used to run fine with that build, easy 60 FPS 1080P but with my new build I can't even get 10 FPS!

My build is... Intel i3-6100 3.7 GHz Asus 750 Ti Western digital 1 tb Hard drive Powerspec 650W semi-modular PSU 8 Gb ddr4 ram And a B150M-D3H-GSM Mobo.

Maybe it's because I haven't gotten drivers on this new build, but I thought the drivers would be saved on the Hard Drive. Please help!

    PC Build Random Shutdowns

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 02:27 PM PDT

    Hey all,

My PC has recently developed a random shutdown issue and it is driving me insane. Below are the components, a description of the issue, and the troubleshooting steps I've taken so far. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Build: MB: ASRock X99 Extreme4; CPU: Intel Core i7-6800K; GPU: EVGA GeForce 1050 Ti; RAM: 2x G.Skill TridentZ Series 8GB DDR4 sticks; PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2; Cooling: Corsair H50 water cooler; Storage: 1x Sandisk 512GB SSD, 1x Seagate 1TB HD;

All parts purchased new from Newegg in January 2017.

    Description of issue:

PC will randomly shut down (hard power cut) with no obvious pattern. Usually occurs within 10 minutes of startup. Can happen in Windows (installed on HDD), Ubuntu (installed on SSD), or even when in the BIOS. After the initial power cut, it will attempt to restart repeatedly and fail. I can hear the PS clicking on and off every few seconds, and the fans start to spin but it quickly shuts off again. It will continue to cycle until I hold the power button for ~10 seconds or turn off the PS. When I try to turn it on again it starts up normally ~50% of the time, the other 50% it resumes the same power on/off cycle. Sometimes a red LED on the motherboard is on when it is cycling, sometimes not. CPU temperatures have been observed around 33C right before it shuts off, so I don't think it's an overheating issue.

    Troubleshooting steps taken so far: * RAM tested OK using Windows memory tester on another PC; * Clear CMOS; * Update BIOS software (currently v3.7); * Replace power supply with known working one; * Swapped Mobo for Asus X99 - made problem worse, would hardly reach BIOS menu before shutting off. Returned Asus Mobo to Newegg; * Reseat all components and add more heatsink compound to CPU;

None of the above had any effect on the problem, except for the mobo replacement which actually made it worse. I am stumped and am about ready to throw this thing off of my apartment building's roof. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

I just want to thank the community

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:07 PM PDT

Seriously though. If someone told me 6mo ago id not only have a gaming pc but actually know alot of stuff now. Even replaced the non modular psu with a fully modular psu, meaning i know all about the 24 pin that goes into the mobo, the 4 pin (in my case) that powers the cpu, my 2 6pci-e for my gpu, etc. The fact that i know all of this stuff now even have confidence to take apart my PC and such, its just crazy to me still. Im 27 but i just never paid attention or had any enthusiasm in learning much about technology. Im a 90s kid tho so its not like im my mom. Anyways thanks r/buildapc thus far. And i look forward to the help in the future.

    Finally finished my RGB build

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:38 PM PDT

Here she is. It took a while to do, but I was finally able to get almost all rgb stuff (minus the MOBO). I don't even know how many hours I have in this from replacing the mobo and case to new fans, cooler, rgb strips etc.

Cable management was kinda rough especially since I took out the bar so I could have the AER RGB fans on the inside of the Rad. All the stupid connectors and cables was a lot to handle.

The RGB fans on the rad are not moving air. Thanks to some helpful folks at /r/nzxt they pointed out that my push-pull was not that at all. So I have 140mm Noctua's as intakes and those are there for purely aesthetics with 2 120mm as exhausts.

Sorry if this is the wrong sub but I couldn't find a sub aimed at older computers.

I'm looking at building a windows 98/XP machine with a voodoo3 3000 and a late pentium 3 early pentium 4. But don't know what motherboard to get, It needs to have PCI slots but preferably both PCI and ISA, and can have either socket 370 or 423.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version (MSI b350 Tomahawk 7A34v1G), as I had heard about better memory compatibility. I was indeed able to get my memory running at the advertised 3200, but my CPU overclock doesn't show up in Task Manager or Cinebench. It does show up in HWMonitor and Ryzen Master. As shown here.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I've tried resetting the overclock in the BIOS. Same results. I downloaded Ryzen Master, but it shows that the CPU is already at 3.9 GHz. I know for a fact the overclock is stable at that voltage as I've been running it since November with no problems.

As previously mentioned, Cinebench recognizes the processor as clocked at 3.1GHz, and gives very similar results to my pre-overclock score.

Some advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

Looking to refresh my build, want tips/opinions.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Okay, due to health issues I didn't touch my PC for 2 years which means I didn't dust it out, reformat/reinstall windows, etc. I've recently dusted it out and games just don't run as well as I remember and I'm thinking it's time to upgrade a few things but I want opinion because I also have not followed the technology trends since then either (am aware of exorbitant prices with ram and gpus)

    I have an i5 2550k that I recently overclocked (stable) to 4.5GHz @ 1.248v

-8GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1333MHz (want to upgrade to a 16gb kit w/ a higher speed). I'm also getting page error in nonpaged area bsod occassionally which I'm pretty sure is the RAM.

-R7 370 Stock (considering upgrade as well because it doesn't run some games at 1080p optimally)

-Western Digital Black Caviar 7200RPM SATA 640GB (Considering an SSD)

    Still on Windows 7 64Bit, I'm pretty sure I should go to W10 but if it isn't a necessity I won't

Obviously, I'd love to just buy a Ryzen 5 1600, gpu, ram, etc. and do that but that's extremely expensive for me. I use my PC mostly for gaming and do dabble in vegas/visual studio/photoshop occassionally but I'm not sure if I can justify buying the ryzen for that currently.

I'm basically wondering, if you were me, what would you go and buy to refresh it. Looking to do this in the next 2-3 months, USA resident for reference. Closest microcenter is 8 hours away but doable

    Thanks!

Need help deciding on a graphics card

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:57 AM PDT

I'm planning on building my first gaming PC, and after my last post and a bit more research I've tweaked the set-up a bit.

However, I need some help in regards to a choosing a graphic card. I don't want to wait until the new Nividia series comes out as I'd like to have the build ready for the summer.

I've pretty much made up my mind on the rest of the parts, and it looks like this:

Motherboard Asus - ROG STRIX Z370-F GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $179.99 @ SuperBiiz

Now, these are currently selling at the same exact price here in Norway:

    • Inno3D GTX 1070 Ti X2
    • Gigabyte 1080 Turbo OC (not in stock for another two weeks, but that doesn't matter to me)

I know the Turbo is the cheapest 1080 card available, and that it can get hot and VERY noisy during use, but if it's still worth it over the 1070 Ti I guess I'll go for it.

These are the second cheapest 1080's available, for another extra 100 bucks:

    • Gigabyte 1080 Windforce
    • Palit 1080 Jetstream

But going for one of those doesn't seem worth it unless any of you think so.

I don't want to go for a 1080 Ti as the prices are about $350 higher than the 1080, so I'd rather save some money and upgrade in a couple years instead.

Another thing - the case and keyboard are on sale with a 25% discount until tomorrow, so I was thinking about buying them (and assemble a chair and table) first, hope for sales on some other components until the 1080 Turbo is in stock, and then order everything that's left together with the card. Would that be a good solution? As I understand cases are very rarely faulty, and I can test the keyboard's functionality with my laptop.

Thank you in advance, guys and gals and everything in between!

Just built my first PC. I have everything working fine, went into BIOS and my keyboard/mouse worked, but when I plug in my USB to install Windows 7, it will not let me use my keyboard or mouse.

    Any help?

If it matters any, I have cords connected into USB3.0 on the motherboard.
