Good laptop for college and every day use.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:02 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US, around 500-600 dollars

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing intensive

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No games, just school work and general browsing

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? What I'm looking for is a backlit keyboard (super important), hopefully the ability to have an SSD and an HDD, and also good battery life.

Laptop with Long lifespan under $1500 for typing and simulation -USA/13"-16"

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 12:49 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally around $1200 but can go up to $1500; buying in USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I wouldn't mind having a touchscreen but I value the best specification first, battery life second and touchscreen the last.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It is important, I already have a desktop so I need this to carry around.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I am using Windows now but I don't mind changing that. (I wish there was a good Android tablet that can pretend as laptop for stuff other than simulations.)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything between 13.3-15.6 works.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video editing, I will mostly type and code using Miktex/Texstudio (not crucial if OS doesn't support these, I can switch) and MATLAB.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want something that I can use for at least 5 years and more; so I guess that would go under good build quality. This is my first expectation. A good keyboard would also make a huge difference since all the tasks I will perform requires writing. Touch-screen would be cool if feasible without sacrificing from other features but I guess not.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I know it is hard to guess the lifetime of a laptop but I don't like buying new computers and my simulation needs are not heavy, I can do that on my desktop exclusively in the later years so I want to use it for typing and light Netflixing on vacations for as long as possible. Thank you!

EDIT: I forgot to add but I think I can stretch higher than $1500 if I love something; so feel free to suggest up to $2k if you think it is really a perfect match.

UK | Best laptop for a developer

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:48 AM PDT

I'm a front end developer. I currently use a late 2013 Macbook but that'll go away as I'm changing jobs. Will have another with new job but I'd like to actually get one for myself too.

I'd like something that's best specs for money. What's most important is that I use it with 2 x 24" extra screens and can find myself running Jetbrains software (code editing), other developer tools, Photoshop, multiple browser windows/tabs, Youtube etc, all at the same time (really high CPU usage).

I have a couple laptops in mind but I'd like to get others' views as well.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: UK - no more than £1,500 - £1,800

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money; I don't need 2in1;

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderate. I'd love it to be thin but I'm after specs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Anything. I've been working with OS in the past 4 years but I'm happy to change.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3 or 15.6. Not bigger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Front end developing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Casual gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 2 screens connect, Front end developing

Laptop for 2D animation and medium gaming

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:50 PM PDT

Trying to find a laptop that will do work for a budding 2D animator.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500-$1000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No need for 2 in 1 form factor, indifferent to battery life vs specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or 17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. 2D animation programs (ToonBoom), Adobe programs (Photoshop, After Effects) No 3D animation programs will be used.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch is the most system intensive game that will be played. As long as it can be played at medium settings, it will do.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Must have a USB C port

I appreciate all the help! Thank you!

    13-15", UK, <£1,000.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: UK. Ideally £7-800, but could stretch to £1000 for the right laptop.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd prefer light and thin, but it's not my top criteria.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but that's based on the assumption you get more for your money, I'm open to Mac if that's not the case.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming (mostly Football Manager), occasional photo editing and music production (Ableton, Reason).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for longevity and versatility. Whilst day to day it mostly gets used for browsing/Excel, I want to be able to do a bit of gaming and music production without it being a massive struggle. And ideally after something fairly futureproof (USB-C/Thunderbolt, upgrade-able).

The Acer Swift 3 and ASUS Vivobook are the current front runners but neither quite fits the bill.

    College gaming laptop

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:03 PM PDT

(I made a post previous to this but I deleted it because changed my mind on a few things :p)

I am looking for gaming laptop that I can use for school so things such as battery life and size are pretty self explanatory.

Screen size, resolution, refresh rate, keyboard etc etc are all irrelevant to me because when gaming I would just hook it up to my own monitor as if it were a desktop

Specs? GPU: must be a 1070 (or higher if the price is close enough)

CPU: don't know a lot about laptop cpus but I'm guessing it's pretty straight forward if the laptop is gonna have a 1070 in it :p

    RAM: nothing under 16gb

STORAGE: ssd is a must just for windows and a game or two. I need an HDD with nothing less than 500gb. Apparently you can install an extra HDD into some laptops so I'm willing to do that if I really need to.

Budget? Basically whatever price it is for the specs I just mentioned but would prefer to stay on the cheaper side.

    Thanks in advance <333

Choosing between XPS 13, XPS 15 Two In One, and the upcoming XPS 15 9570 (Or your personal recommendation)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 08:29 PM PDT

    • *Total budget and country of purchase:
    • -Around 2000ish can go over *

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • battery, screen and overall power and compatability with external GPU*

How important is weight and thinness to you? weight should be pretty light, preferably under 7lbs. Thinness doesn't really matter.*

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.windows*

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A *

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Overwatch and Fortnite*

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? medium/high 4k and 1080*

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? build quity*

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Will be using a external keyboard and mouse and headphones.

Need help choosing a daily driver laptop for college and home. Price isn't too much of an issue, I just need something current and relatively light weight. I was looking at the XPS family primarily because a lot of people seem to love them as day drivers. I want something that will be more than enough for typical college work and something that has a great screen. Keyboard isn't a big deal for me as I'm going to be using an external one.

I'm also looking to use an external GPU to game on at home so something that can output better prefromance than my current grandpa desktop (i7 2600 w a 750ti) is a must. Mostly playing Overwatch and Fortnite at 4k/1080. I will not be playing games most of the time when away from the external GPU.

Which would be the best choice? Maybe a laptop that you think is better than the three I've listed?

Is the Dell XPS 15 9560 worth it?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:19 PM PDT

Is the dell XPS 15 9560 a good heavy duty laptop for high school despite the so called QC problems these things might have? Should this be a factor/worry in buying one of these? Are they common or not, or just a lot of people post problems when there are any? I've been looking at MacBooks to get my son for high school, but I'm almost turned off by the really high price tag of them. Anyone have first hand experience with these machines and are they good?

P.S. Should I wait until the 9570 comes out soon?

Looking for laptop mostly for movie watching, casual photo editing, and rare video editing (no gaming)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:57 PM PDT

EDIT: damn, forgot to add country, budget, screen size on title: USA / up to $1999 / 15"

    • Total budget and country of purchase: up to $1999 in USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs for the money, good battery life would be nice too, but not mandatory

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important, but again, a nice luxury to have.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch as a middle ground for good movie watching but somewhat portable

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. When the mood strikes, I would do some video editing with Adobe Premiere. I do have a camera that supports 4K video recording I have yet to use because my current laptop cannot handle it. Casual photo editing with Picasa, so nothing professional No gaming (I'm a console gamer) Movie watching is usually stored on my hard drive (external) played back with VLC.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I do prefer a full keyboard with numpad that's backlit. Should have an HDMI port, and 2 or more USB ports (the more the better as I do plug in a bunch of stuff.. but I can always invest in a USB dock). Reliable build quality is also a must (see below for further comments)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Dell XPS 15 looked very appealing on paper but the user reviews left me wanting. Also it doesn't have the numpad keyboard which I really like since I do crunch numbers from time to time (for weight training purposes). But the screen sure does look delicious. Looking for something similar to XPS 15 that's reliable and will last me for years without worrying about it breaking down or glitching out right out of the box. My current laptop Sony Viao is chugging along at more than 6 years now and has served me well. Hoping to have similar experience with my next upgrade!

Help Me Pick. 2018 GS65 MSI, Asus Zephyrus-M, or Aero 15X.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:06 PM PDT

These are all in my Budget. The MSI GS65 is my favorite BUT you can't get to the RAM without taking apart the laptop seriously.

The Asus Zephyrus-M would be my personal pick But It has the worst battery Life, and the Thick Display bezeles are a downer. So is the slow SSD. Good is the full GTX 1070.

The Aero 15X has 1 Downside which is the lack of GSync. 144hz and great IPS Display help so does the huge battery and fast M.2 NVMe drives space for 2. And lastly the 2 Year Warranty is a nice bonus.

That's My 2 Cents. I have to buy ASAP. Chase Freedom Unlimited (not an ad) is giving me $300 and I have $400 in Amazon Giftcards. Plus 15 Months no interest to pay off.

~2000$ laptop in Canada for medical school

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~2000$ in Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is important, specifically the ability to use a pen to write on the screen to take notes/annotate papers and diagrams Also require a long battery life and solid base for typing

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? don't care, just not too heavy

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows or mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" or 15" leaning towards 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. no, mostly writing and drawing to study. Probably some programming, but heavier code will be running on other machines

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? NA

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard screen that supports drawing good battery good screen stable

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I will be using this when I start med school. I used a surface pro during my undergrad and loved it. The drawing was super helpful for chemistry structures and writing on pdfs. For my next degree I used a normal laptop as it was mostly coding. With med I plan to do a lot more drawing on notes and papers I read. I also really want something with a good battery life/screen/keyboard. I don't plan on getting another pro as the keyboard I had back in undergrad was not very stable for lap work. I also don't care about powerful gpu as I don't plan to do gaming on my laptop.

I am currently thinking of getting the surface book 2, 13", i5. It seems to have a good keyboard, good battery life, and supports drawing on the skin with a 2-in-1 design. I'm posting here to see what alternatives there are.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 and decent battery life (aka doesn't have to be the best)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"/15"

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Light gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality and reliability as I'd like to keep this for 4-5 years

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was initially considering the 13" Yoga 720 (8th gen i5, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD) and it looks like a great deal now at $600 but I do have some concerns about the black line and whether or not it's future proof.

Given that, I'm also considering the late 2017 HP Spectre x360 15" (8th gen i7, 16gb ram, 512gb SSD) for $1100/$1200 as that seems more future proof.

But is it worth double the yoga 720? And/or are there better bang-for-the-buck options?

    Thanks!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 to 15 inch, preferred. Otherwise I won't complain.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use Solid Edge, AutoCAD and MatLab for college. As for games, Overwatch mostly and some VR games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I plan on getting Beat Saber. Nothing too fancy, enough to play those games in average quality.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An optical drive would be nice, but not a must. Numpad is a must tho.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I used to have an Alienware, but I got weird looks during college time and I don't want it to happen again when I start my masters program. At first my top choice was a Razer Blade, but putting aside the high price, the lack of numpad is very annoying but I can't seem to find another laptop with similar looks. Thanks!

Gaming Laptop with 120 Hz screen and GTX 1060 or a 60 Hz with a GTX 1070 and get an external monitor?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-$1400 USD, I really dont want anything over 1300 but i know that's hard sometimes

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Probably best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a factor

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play Fortnite, Rocket League, Cod WW2, and Far cry 5. I mainly want high-very high or 100+ frames so i can put the 120 Hz to good use

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? RGB keyboard would be sweet, but not required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am looking at the tracer ll 15 VR 800 MK as the laptop with the GTX 1070 but only a 60 Hz screen. I am trying to find another laptop that has a 120 Hz screen but only a GTX 1060 because that would make it within the price range. Should I get the Tracer ll and an external 144 Hz monitor or one with a 1060 but a 120 Hz screen?
