    Simple Questions - April 28, 2018

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is the APU on the AMD A6-7400K good enough for League of Legends?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:03 PM PDT

I'm building a budget PC, and I don't really do anything GPU intensive. The only game I play is League of Legends, so I was thinking about using an APU so that I don't have to buy a GPU.

So, will the A6-7400K run League reasonably well? I would like to at least be able to get Medium settings at 60+ FPS. I know the new Ryzen APU would handle it, but the FM3 APUs are way cheaper right now.

    Thanks!

[Build Ready] AMD Linux Gaming PC - $1926.95

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:54 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This will replace my desktop PC, which I built about 10 years ago. I will use it approximately 8 hours a day for work, which consists primarily of remote administration of servers via SSH/RDP, but includes occasionally spinning up VMs for testing or special environment access. I will also use this system for gaming via the expanding library of Steam games for Linux. My game of choice at the moment is Smite, which AFAIK is not currently supported natively or via wine. I am entertaining the idea of a separate Windows partition, but am generally exhausted with the bloat and telemetry of Windows. My goal is to see what Linux gaming has to offer, provide my full support for the platform, and possibly move that pendelum in a good direction. The target lifespan of this system is 4-5 years.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I don't have any specific requirements at the moment, but am interested in genuine arguments for certain specifications. I think I'm generally satisfied by any 1080+ resolution and 60+ framerate, and would hope to be able to play games on high-ish settings for a few years.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My original goal was $1000-1500 but this current build is sitting around $2000. I can afford the new price point, but am interested in opinions regarding additional costs not making sense.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Cheap x5675 build that can perform just as well as an i5 8400 and ryzen 2600

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:14 AM PDT

x5675 cpus can be found on alixpress for 50 bucks. An x58 mobo cost a bit more as its around 120 bucks. Get 3 sticks of ddr3 ram since the mobos supports triple channel. Overlock the cpu to an easy attainable 4.4 Hz and you have a system that can run games just as well as modern 8400's and 2600's. All that for alot cheaper. You have to go second hand though

dont believe me? heres some benchmarks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBYBMQrK7XE&feature=share

Issue: I just finished the build and can't get it to boot to windows. It's reading everything just fine in the bios, but it's not "finding any bootable devices." The windows is on an ssd and has been through two completely different builds with no issues until now. I'm at a loss on what to do.

Update: ssd still boots just fine as the independent ssd in the previous build. Going to wire in just the 1 ssd in new build and see if we can boot.

Update2: Sole ssd in new build still doesn't work. Seeing but not recognizing as bootable drive. Changed sata ports and still nothing/:

Anyway, just wondered if this would be compatible and good enough for what I need. I'm pretty sure it's mostly compatible, and if you're wondering about the power supply, the server PSU is for the odd connections and other things related to the Proliant board, and the cheapo ATX supply is for anything else that wouldn't work with the given supply. Thanks!

I built this computer 3 years ago, everything was working fine, until a few days ago when it suddenly shut off. It won't turn back on, sometimes when initially pressing the start button the cpu fan will twitch but nothing else will happen. The mobo light is on although. I have already tried switching out the PSU and resetting CMOS as well. But I'm having trouble identifying what's preventing the pc from turning on. Any advice would be appreciated thanks!

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

CS:GO, League of Legends, Overwatch, Fortnite, BF1 and Rust.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Basically anything better than what I got, right now I run League on like 60 - 80 fps, cant run Overwatch/CS:GO and can only run Fortnite on 20 - 30 fps everything on low. I'm used to playing all of my games on low, so Medium is like Ultra to me. Graphics don't really bother me that much, hell when I play Fortnite my character is literally just pixels (Feelsbad). I guess it would be cool to play on High / Ultra but tbh Medium is fine if I get solid FPS.

I just have a plain monitor, so got me what the screen resolution is xd.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'd like the PC ASAP so cheaper = sooner, but I'd say $800 - $1000.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8100, friend recommended the i5 - 8400 but I'm not sure which one.

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212

Mobo: Asus - ROG STRIZ Z370

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (2x4GB)

Storage: Western Digital - 1TB, and I'm not sure if I need a SSD? Is it a required thing? If it is then I'm looking at the Samsung - 860 Evo 250GB.

Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 3gb, I'd get the 6gb but my grandfather bought this one off of Amazon for a birthday present. I'm 99% sure he bought the first one that popped up. So is this good enough for what I need? This is the only part I actually have.

Case: Deepcool - Tesseract SW Red ATX Mid Tower

    Power: EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 550W

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have a keyboard, a mouse and all the peripherals. If I can get something cheaper that would acustom to my needs that would be fantastic! Thanks in advance!

Slow Internet Speeds on Ryzen build. Have tried (nearly) everything. Advice desperately needed.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:20 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I completed my build in December of 2017 and have slowly come to realize my slow internet problems aren't with my ISP or network equipment, but with my own PC. I've tried everything I can think of to diagnose / fix the problem and I'm at my wits end. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.

    The Problem

My internet is slow. Usually, when I run a speed test, it will get up to 9.xx mbps and stay there. Sometimes it is slower (7 mbps, 2-3 mbps, or even 1 or lower). The upload is usually completely fine at 5+ mbps even when the download speed is less than 2 mbps.

When I built my pc, I simply used my ssd that was running Windows 10 on my old computer. I did not do a fresh install (I have since). I believe there has to be a hardware issue.

Attempts at Diagnosing / Fixing the Problem

First of all, my exact network setup runs perfectly fine when I plug the same ethernet cable into mac laptop (using a usb-c to ethernet converter). Speed tests run at 50+ mbps download. Even so, I have tried all of the following:

    1. My ISP has replaced my modem.
    2. I have replaced the router.
    3. I have tried different ethernet cables (and different ports on the router).
    4. I have booted from Ubuntu on a USB.
    5. I have installed a PCIE network card.
    6. I have reinstalled Windows 10 twice. The first time I used a utility within Windows 10 to reinstall the OS but keep my old files.
    7. The second time I downloaded windows to a usb, used it to format my hard drive, and then installed a Windows from the USB.
    8. I have used the device manager to attempt to do driver updates on every single device listed.
    9. I have updated the bios on my motherboard to the latest version. After each of those steps I have had the same issues with my internet speed not getting about ~10 mbps.

I did have one momentary glimmer of hope after installing the network card. I ran a speed test and it hit normal download speeds (50+). After I moved my computer back into my room, the internet speed again would not get back above 10 mbps. I moved my computer back to the original test setup after the PCIE install, and it would still only get to roughly 10 mbps. So the speed was normal for exactly one speed test after install, and then back down to the slow speeds I've been seeing.

    Questions

Are there any other steps I should take to try and resolve this issue before I start replacing hardware (Motherboard)?

If the motherboard is the problem, is it expected that the same issues will arise when using a PCIE network card?

Is it possible that other hardware components could be causing the issue (should I attempt to use another hard drive for instance)?

Thanks for taking the time to read. I'm getting super frustrated trying to resolve this issue, so any ideas, thoughts, or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Can't decide on monitor for my build

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:34 AM PDT

    Hi!

edit: ordered the XB241H, should arrive next week. Thanks for your help!

I bought my PC a few months ago with a lot of help of /r/buildapc, thanks once again. TLDR and specs at the end.

I made a lot of research about monitors as well, but I still can't decide, so I would like to ask for your help. First I wanted to go for 1080p 144hz gsync monitor, and found Acer Predator XB241H which many sites say are one of the best of it's category. Even though the stand looks really ugly for me, I'd be okay with it.

I was ready to pull the trigger on the Acer monitor, then I found Dell S2417DG, which is an 1440p 144hz gsync monitor, that everyone seems to love. Also looks simple, and is just a little bit more expensive than the Acer.

Now I tried to make some research if 1080p or 1440p is better for me, with a GTX1060, and now the results were very mixed.

On one hand, people say that just the number of the pixels, the higher resolution is worth it, even if that means reducing graphics. I play path of exile mainly, currently on an 1080p 60hz monitor, and at max graphics I sometimes drop below 60fps. Of course I'm playing other games too, like CSGO, and some AAA games. Also monitors are for a long term, I have my current monitor for something like 10 years now. For long term I guess 1440p is better, I don't think I'll upgrade my PC in the next 4-5 years.

I would buy the 1440p Dell, but the thing I'm scared of is performance. Downgrading resolution always sucks, playing in 1080p on an 1440p monitor is not optimal at all. I don't know what to do.

TLDR: 144hz gsync: 1080p Acer Predator XB241H vs 1440p Dell S2417DG with the specs below

Is it ok to buy a used gpu?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:01 PM PDT

So here are my options for the graphics card, all will be 1060 6gb -XTREME edition for 330$-new -Gigabyte windforce for 300$- used but claims only used on weekends -MSI for 268- Used and claims it was mildly used -PNY for 260- used for only 6 months. the fans say XLR8 on them so idk what edition it is -EVGA SSC for 315- new I could get a compact 1 fan for pretty cheap new..but I really am a fan of double fans because i sometimes oc my gpu and the extra cooling helps. My CPU is going to be the ryzen 2600x with a asus ROG strix B350-F motherboard.

Traveling to Uni with a PC

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:55 PM PDT

So I'm going to be flying to Scotland for uni later this year and I'm going to take my desktop with me, problem is getting it there...

I think I've come to the conclusion that taking essential parts out then shipping the case is probably the best way forward, and just carrying those parts onto the plane with me when I fly.

I'm thinking gpu, cpu, ram and hdd's to take with me then leaving motherboard mounted, ssd's, psu and kraken x62 in the case then just shipping this.

My real worry though is with the cooler, whether its ok to leave it in the case by screwing it back into the standoff just without the cpu?

Any chances of leaks with the AIO from the movement or even the cooler block snapping off and just decimating the inside of my case?

Anyone with experience who's traveled like this or maybe knows a better alternative?

Need help with setting up my new pc

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:37 PM PDT

So I just hooked everything up and I don't know if I did it properly. When ever I start the pc up and have it hooked into the monitor there is no signal. I'm not sure if the usb ports are suppose to work yet, but I have my keyboad in right now with no indication that theres power to the keyboard. This is my second build, however my first pc was built so long ago and the new motherboard really throw a wrench in the works. So any help would apperciated. I am running with: ASrock z370 killer SLI/ac I7-8700 LGA1151 1060 GTX Hyper212 Evo fan Deep Cool case 2x 4 HyperX DDR4 ram 288pin 1x Aegis DDR4 ram 288pin *Edit: I've tried the jumper it didn't seem to work with getting the bios going on my motherboard. So I'm trying to narrow down the problem to something that would help finda solution.

New build and everything except my SSD is performing below expectations on userbenchmark. Also, my CPU temp is jumping from 27°c up to 37°c and then dropping back down to 27° every 10 seconds?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 02:32 PM PDT

    Ryzen 5 2600x - performing below expectations (30th percentile)

GTX 980ti - performing way below expectations (19th percentile) GPU is 2nd hand so possibly expected?

Corsair vengeance DDR4 3000 - performing below expectations (36th percentile)

My CPU temp is 27° and then jumps instantly up to 37° then drops 1 or 2° every second until it's back to 27° where it jumps back up again?

AMD Wraith Spire LED Issues (Only Red Lighting)

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:19 PM PDT

    Here are my build specs:

    Foo Bar
    CPU AMD - Ryzen 7 1700 3GHz 8-Core Processor
Motherboard Asus - STRIX B350-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard
    Memory G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
    Storage Samsung - 860 Evo 1TB 2.5' SSD
Video Card Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 8GB Video Card
    Case NZXT S340 Elite (Black)
Power Supply EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

I recently built a new PC with an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 processor, and I've been using the AMD Wraith Spire LED CPU cooler that comes packaged with the Ryzen processor. Everything has been working fine, but there's one annoying hiccup. The LED on the CPU cooler doesn't change color to anything but red. I've double-checked the four pin RGB plug, ensuring that the arrow is aligned with the correct pin, I've tried using the other 4 pin RGB connector on the motherboard, I've made sure all motherboard drivers are up to date and that the ASUS AURA software is up to date as well.

I have an Asus - STRIX B350-F GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard, and I've noticed others with that motherboard have had the same issue, but I haven't come across any solutions. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    How to transfer OS?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:17 PM PDT

Hello all, I started my build with a 120 gb SDD and external 1TB HDD and this has worked out for the most part but now my SDD is filling up due to programs and such for school as well as video editing software. I don't want to go through it and find out what i should move to my HDD it would just be easier in my mind to get a 240 ssd but i don't know how to transfer my os from one drive to another. Is it a hard thing to do? I'm just trying to save myself from wasting a bunch of time and pain.
