    Simple Questions - April 26, 2018

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

TIL: Large HDDs have new mounting hole pattern - How to mount and as a warning

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 10:43 AM PDT

So bought myself a new and shiny 10 TB Barracuda Pro hdd and it arrived today. Opened my case, removed old Drive, then place new drive on drive tray and WTF? The mounting holes don't match.

I do a quick search and it turns out this started some 1-2 years ago with larger drives. Due to many platters the screws had to be moved and a new standard was born. It's just never mentioned anywhere until you notice after the fact many having this issue.

    http://www.computer-answers.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/HD_screw_holes.jpg

Anyone here having made the same experience? I read that they just used 2 holes and it worked fine but that worries me a bit. probably would also use some velcro. better anyone know of any adapters?

When do you replace a power supply

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 02:14 PM PDT

I have a Corsair HX850 that's never given me any trouble but its about 8 years old. I'm guessing waiting until it fails isn't a good approach but when do most of you decide its time. I'm upgrading the CPU/MB/RAM in a week or two just wondering if I should replace the PS as well.

At my Wits-End; have no idea what I am doing - 3 months of trying to build a PC. Help!

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 08:03 AM PDT

I been doing everything in the book to try to get my first build to work. It would power on but would either lose its HDMI connection or power off suddenly. I have ask for tips from this subreddit and they have been very helpful but alas, I still am having problems.

Its an AMD Ryzen build. First I used a ASRock motherboard and I believe that is the problem.

I just got a MSI B350M Gaming PRO AM4 AMD B350 board. I installed it yesterday but after putting in the CPU I did some dumb things I tried install an Artic Cooler freezer 33 but there was no way to connect it. The MSI manaul is very complicated (compared to the ASrock).

I notice that they heatsink/fan in the manual has it the fan facing up on top. The artic freezer has the fan on the side, is that the problem? Is there a piece that am Missing to install?

The MSI manual is hard to decifer and google isn't helping. Where did I plug in the hd audio 4 pin? Where do I plug in the LED/ HD / SW Power source.

May anybody point me in the right direction is there a schematic available that list where everything is supposed to plug in?

Such as the manual for the Asrock: Page 11&12

    https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1249737/Asrock-Ab350-Pro4.html?page=11#manual

Right now my computer is taken apart and there is thermal past on the cpu that hasn't been pressed down yet. :(

I am almost tempted to sell the thing at a discount (since everything else works besides the motherboard).

I would rather get this thing working and installed correctly.

    Please help

AMD Ryzen 1060 6b msi 16gb adapta ram 550w sea sonic gold

    Help!

    Thanks!

Build Ready - $1200 Gaming PC

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:51 AM PDT

I put together this list below and would love to get some feedback. I'm going to be using a 1080p 144hz monitor and would like to be able to achieve at least 60fps on games like PUBG, FO4, and other future RPGs on highish settings. I have access to Windows OS so that's excluded from my list.

I also chose the 2600 because I plan on doing some streaming in the future and I'm planning on building within the next month or so.

Thoughts/feedback? Or am I good to go?

I need help finding a mouse for my small-ass hands.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 12:39 PM PDT

I have tiny hands for a dude (Bottom of my palm to the tip of my middle finger is 6 1/2 inches). I use mostly palm grip, but will sometimes move into more of a fingertip grip.

My main problem is every mouse I get, I find myself struggling to reach the second thumb button without having to move my entire grip, which ultimately effects my gameplay (pubg, paladins... Even Poe sometimes).

I'd like to find a relatively small mouse, comfortable for palm grip with either a over/under side button layout, or with side buttons further back on the mouse. I've not been sure how to word those options for an optimal Google search... If anyone has any suggestions, or searching insight, please let me know!

Thanks for your help bapc fam!

    Pre-build computer questions

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 01:09 PM PDT

So I've read that buying pre-built nowadays is just as good as building your own, I've built my own like 4 years ago, and I don't really want to do it again, so I've come to you guys for some questions

I want a gaming PC on a bit of a budget, and I found this computer; http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/cty/inspiron-gaming-desktop/spd/inspiron-5680-gaming-desktop/ddcwblsk103h pre-built and I thought it was to good to be true, is there something wrong with dell computers? Can I not change out its CPU or something? I know I cant overclock that current CPU but that isn't something I am looking to do at this current moment.

I basically just want to know if this computer is good for the price, if there anything better in the same ball park +- $100, or if this is just a waste of money. A couple of games that my current computer struggles on; Divinity 2, Total Warhammer 1+2. I am almost positive this computer will be able to play these two on at least high right?

Hi, First I would like to say thank you to the r/buildapc community for all the assistance with getting to this point with my build. I know that this build is overkill for what I'm looking to do and that the Noctua will do better than the AIO for cooling, but I really like the way that the AIO looks. I just wanted to make sure that there isn't anything that I'm missing and any extra things that I need to get to make my life easier and reduce the chance of messing up (ie magnetic screwdrivers, MOBO grounders)

    2400g with 8gb ram vs 2200g with 16gb ram?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:41 AM PDT

Just as the title states, I'm building a budget LoL/overwatch machine for my little brothers birthday, and I've got about $500 saved up. These two APUs having been crushing it from what I've seen in benchmarks and reviews so i think they're perfect for what he needs. Either one would be around the same price, but which do you think would provide the best performance? He doesn't play much, mostly just those two games plus discord or spotify.

    Fractal Design R6 Accessories?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:38 AM PDT

Does anyone know if/where you can purchase vertical GPU mount (Flex VRC-25) and USB type-C front panel (Connect D1) for the Fractal Design R6? I have been unsuccessful in finding them online yet and would like them for a new build I am completing.

I already purchased the case but it would be nice to add these parts in before doing the build. Especially since I plan on doing a custom loop with rigid tubing and would like to have the vertical mount in place.

I submitted a support ticket on it 9 days ago, and they have yet to even acknowledge it. Not exactly the support I was lead to believe from all the rave reviews online about their customer service. Maybe a shoutout to u/Fractal-Design/ will help if someone doesn't answer first.

Edit: Link to the 2 products pages on their website:

    Monitor Displays "No Signal?"

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 02:13 PM PDT

I just built a new PC, and when I plugged it in, everything seemed fine. However, when I plugged my graphics card into my motherboard, the monitor didn't detect a signal. The monitor knows when I take out the HDMI plug and put it back in because the message restarts when I unplug my PC and replug it. Everything seems to be on. The graphics card, motherboard, psu, and cpu cooler are all running. What could be causing this problem?

Edit: I've figured it out, my motherboard can't read my cpu because i need to update bios.

    RAM Prices?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:13 PM PDT

I was just looking at my new build plan for the future, and realized that my total price had dropped quite a bit. I tried to figure out whats wrong, when I looked at the RAM.

The RAM I had, Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB, had dropped from $230 CAD to $46 CAD. These prices are Amazons. This is happening for other RAM as well. Why has the price dropped so suddenly? Will this stay?

What should i upgrade? Do you know?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 01:31 PM PDT

Hi Reddit, What parts would an upgrade to result in the best performance boost? I mostly use my computer for gaming and modding. Thanks in advance for any help i get, i really appreciate it. Specs:

    MOTHERBOARD: GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 1.0) AM3+ Sockets, 4 x DDR3 1.5V, 2 x PCI-E 2.0.

    RAM: 2 x 4GB Corsair Vengence 1600Mhz 1,5V DDR3

GRAPHICS CARD: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Dual-fan

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz Eight-Core Processor 8Mb L2 (It does not have an integrated graphics card)

    PSU: Corsair TX 650W PSU

DRIVES: (Just bought the SSD so ignore this one, linking it just in case) Samsung SSD 860 EVO 250GB ATA Seagate Barracuda HDD

EDIT: As of right now i have the funds for 1 "high end" upgrade. What part do you recommend me upgrading? I have a budget of more or less 600 Euro, so any recomendations would be appreciated.

Will frequently check for any questions. Thanks.

    Ryzen 5 2600x 90°C on idle.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:36 PM PDT

Swapped out my old FX-8300 that was cooled by ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 for the past 2 years or so for Ryzen 5 2600x. New MoBo is ASUS ROG STRIX B350-F GAMING (AM4). Put everything back in and had a CPU fan error reported in BIOS, but fan was spinning and after first install and reboot it disappeared. I did the usual, recovered my backed up files, got rid of W10 bloatware, nothing demanding. An hour later, I check Speccy, CPU sitting on 90°C. So I am not sure if the cooler is just that shitty, or if there is something else that I overlooked that could be going on. Because on my old setup, I had my FX-8300 run at some 30°C when idle.

EDIT: After running AIDA 64, Ryzen Master and HWInfo64, they give me some 35-45 on the CPU itself, but AIDA 64 is giving me those high temps on CPU Diode. What do I make of that?

BIOS resetting sometimes on boot and overclock no longer working in Windows

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:36 PM PDT

So recently when I start up my pc, occasionally it will give me an error as my cpu fan speed it too low. When I go into BIOS, it has gone back to default and I have to change the profile back to the one I had it saved on (with lower minimum cpu fan rpm and oc etc.).

Additionally, as of yesterday the overclock for my CPU isn't working for some reason. It just stays at stock in windows despite me loading the OC'd BIOS profile that I've been running for a few months and worked fine running my 3770k @ 4.5GHz until now.

I'm not too sure of the cause but I thought maybe it could be the CMOS battery?

Am i missing something about the i3-8100

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:32 PM PDT

Just as title says. If I'm not overclocking and my build is purely gaming, its seem like a great cpu. Can be found on sale for roughly 100$ (half the price of other 3.6 ghz level cpus) and doesn't require an expensive motherboard or ram (like amd cpus). I feel like I'm definitely missing something, what is it?

    MoBo+CPU upgrade guide?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:27 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU/MoBo/RAM from an i5 to a new Ryzen chip. No other upgrades or changes are planned. I've seen so many variations of posts on both sides of having to get a new windows license. Some even go as far as saying formatting the hard drive. I have no questions about the physical upgrade process, but I can't find a straight forward software how-to for it. What software/files/settings/os can I keep, and what goes? Ideally, I'd like to do this and have it boot up to the same effective computer I have now. Same windows settings, installed programs, save files the works. How close can I get to this, and how do I do it?

    • How easy/feasible is it to upgrade to a larger system M.2 drive later if necessary? Yes, I know it should be easy to physically swap the drives out, but how does one go about cloning M.2 drives?
    • Per my research, I should be able to connect the M.2 drive in the M2_3 slot and then still have 6 SATA slots available for RAID. Is that correct, or am I missing something?
    • Is the mobo I picked SGX-compatible? I couldn't find that term or HDCP 2.2 explicitly in the specs, so I'm just curious if anyone has a clue.
    • Rosewill warns that the case I picked requires my mobo to have TWO on-board USB 3.0 Sockets. Does my selected mobo have that?
    • What's a good Thunderbolt 3 Add-In Card?
