    Simple Questions - April 14, 2018

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

GPU's in Japan have dropped to just above MSRP which is huge here

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:17 AM PDT

    Pics from shop.
100 yen is about .93 USD for reference. So that Zotac 1070 Ti is about $512.
These same cards were going for over $700 less than a month ago.
They also have 1080's for about $650. I expect cards to be at MSRP before May is over.
This is huge because Japan has terrible gaming PC parts prices. Even during normal times, I could never find a 1070 for under 45000 yen.

1800$ budget build help for future proof gaming at 1080p 60fps

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 07:35 AM PDT

Use of system: Mainly future proof gaming @ 1080p 60Hz(not more) at max settings, that's why it might look like an overkill for that resolution and refresh rate

    LINK FOR PARTS: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/j2y8MZ

    Maximum budget: 1800$

    Country: US

    CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core $346.89

    -Best CPU for gaming afaik

Cooler: Cooler Master - MasterLiquid ML240L RGB 66.7 CFM $59.99

-Liquid over Air cooling mainly for the space and aesthetics

    M/B: Asus - Prime Z370-P ATX LGA1151 $139.89

-Seems good enough, not entirely sure, has 2 M.2 ports, I plan on putting an extra M.2 SSD in the future

    RAM: G.Skill - Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 14 CAS $205.89

-What's the difference between the Trident? I hope the 14 CAS is more futureproof than 16 CAS

    SSD: Samsung - 960 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 $119.99

-The big improvements over the conventional SSD is only in sequential speeds, but I'm ok with that

    GPU: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB ACX 3.0 $604.98

-Something around that price, perhaps I'll wait for new GPU announcements

Case: NZXT - S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower $62.99

-Not yet sure, side window is blurry I hear

    PSU: SeaSonic-FOCUS Plus Platinum 750W 80+ Fully-Modular $111.64

-Is a top tier brand, right? cheap platinum, sounds good

    Monitor: Acer - G247HYL bmidx 23.8" 1920x1080 60Hz $119.99

-Around 23-25 inches with that resolution and refresh rate not sure which brand/model is the best in the 90-130 price range

Are these sleeved cable extensions trustworthy?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:13 PM PDT

I was looking around for some cheap sleeved cable extensions for my 24 pin, 6+2 pin and 8 pin CPU cables and found these:

    24 pin extension

    6+2 pin PCIE extension

    8 pin CPU extension

I was wondering if these are trustworthy extensions, since they look really nice and don't break the bank. Thanks in advance!

    New GPU coil whine.

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:43 PM PDT

Brought a new Zotac 1060 3gb for my girlfriends rig, nothing special, but it does the job.

Is it normal to experience major coil whine when putting the gpu on load? It's only a couple weeks old and has done so since it came out the box. It's fine when idling, but whenever we game it's quite annoying.

She doesn't really hear it, but it's the right pitch that travels right through me.

Is this an acceptable reason to RMA the card? Will they even accept an RMA?

Tell me, ol' wise ones. What do? (Thanks!)

2700x or 8700k for gaming + plex streaming

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:55 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Using my gaming PC as both a gaming PC and a media server. My GF watches plex a lot so we stream content from my PC to our TVs.

With my 4690k, I can't really game if she's watching something because they're both fairly PC intensive.

Will be gaming at 1080p @240hz or 3440x1440 @75hz depending if it's FPS or RPG. Will also be streaming 1080p when gaming on the 240hz monitor.

Not sure which is the best option for my situation and hoping you guys can help out!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'll be pairing the new CPU with a Vega 64.

Help a colour blind brother out with a build? :)

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:46 AM PDT

I've got a budget of £2500 and i already own:

    • Fractal Design Define R6 Gunmetal TG
    • EVGA 850P2
    • Fractal Celsius S36

So i'm basically after CPU, Motherboard, RAM, GPU, m.2 drive and Cablemod sleeved cables.

Now sounds nuts but im fanatical about making my build look good and making colours match (which is difficult because i suffer from Achromatopsia, which is complete colour blindess.)

Was looking at Asus ROG stuff as that seems to carry Grey colour parts but not sure which colour cables to match and also LED or RGB colours in general.

Pure gaming rig with alot of OBS streaming involved.

    Thanks

    EDIT:

sorry should add in i'm UK based i'm playing in 1080p 144hz at the moment but will be buying one of those 4k high refresh monitors when they finally release.

Cracked my processor open and lowered the temp by about 25 degrees.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 11:43 PM PDT

I was running my 7700k at 4.9ghz and couldn't really get the thing to stick below 90 degrees, I tweaked some voltages and settled on the fact that 90 would be okay. Well, it was bugging me and my computer kept crapping out. So, I decided to spend the money to replace the thermal paste. Now my computer sits at about 40-50 ambient, and barely touches 80 when there is a heavy load. I was also able to set the clock to 5.0ghz and it has been running super smooth / cool since then. If anyone is interested - here is a timelapse of the process of taking computer apart, putting it back together in a new shell. Skip to the end for the first boot.

Banging my head against the wall with SLI

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:13 PM PDT

    Obligatory Parts List

I've been trying to extend the life of my PC with a second 980, and it hasn't worked very well. I can't run any game for longer than an hour or two without it crashing and sometimes I have full system crashes.

I've run benchmarks that tell me I'm fine and have a great computer. I've talked to the guys at EVGA who have looked at the benchmarks and model of my cards with no luck. I am using a standard ribbon SLI bridge which could be it? OR maybe my PSU is just tapped out in terms of power? I need some help, my dudes.

Are GPU prices finally coming down?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:41 AM PDT

I did a quick search on Amazon and saw what I thought were relatively cheap prices on RX580 at $499 is that cheap. And there were a bunch of them available and new to boot so are prices stabilizing and availability getting better.

Anyone else constantly feel the urge to upgrade your PC?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 04:51 PM PDT

My build runs a GTX1070 and i7 6700k but I often want to get a new processor even though mine works absolutely fine and I have no issues with it. I don't know what it is, the fun of taking everything apart or noticing the difference in performance but I almost feel obligated to upgrade. Does anyone else share this feeling?

Is my Samsung M.2 850 EVO 500gb running slow because its almost full?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Ran a userbenchmark test, here are the results : http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/8298543

Everything looked good besides the SSD, which is really low for some reason. Im assuming because I almost have no space left correct? Is there anything else wrong with any of my other components? Thanks!

    Multi-Use Monitor Advice Needed - Work/PC/PS4

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:41 PM PDT

Hey guys, we are expecting a kid in a few months and I'm losing my dedicated gaming space, so I will be condensing all of my peripherals into one desk and need some advice on a monitor.

Currently have a HP Pavilion 27xw (1920x1080, 60 Hz, 7ms) that I use as a second monitor for work, which has been quite nice. However, I'm looking for something a bit nicer to pair with the PC I just built (i7 7700, 1080).

In all, I will be using it primarily for work, but also PC, PS4, and some retropie gaming. The PS4 Pro can handle 4k (maybe) but my research indicates I should try and focus more on 1080p at higher fps with my build with regards to monitor choice.

There are so many different monitor options out there and I want to be sure I don't end up buying something incompatible or that is complete overkill for my intended use. Aiming for 27-32" in size for the work aspects, and budget isn't a huge concern, but I don't want to overspend if I don't have to.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Upgrading from 2012 Build

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:08 PM PDT

    Build Upgrade:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Exclusively gaming, with browsing / office editing being a distant second.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

My current setup and monitor is 1080p 60hz, however in the future I would like to be able to upgrade my GPU/Monitor to allow for 2k 144hz gameplay (I would buy a combo of g-sync/freesync depending on the new card). The budget in this upgrade is to bring my 2012 build up to date with my current GPU (1060 6GB which I purchased last year as a preliminary upgrade).

I'm calling this an upgrade even though I'm going to be replacing just about everything except the GPU/SSD...

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$800 (Does not include a GPU/Monitor upgrade down the road - this is just for the other components)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

In BIOS I set my Ram up using the supplied profile for it to run at 3200 mhz. After I started using this profile I keep getting blue screens and requests to run windows memory test.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Ran windows memory test and it says there are hardware issues. Once I disable the profile and return the ram to running at 2133 mhz the PC boots to windows correctly.

    1080p 144hz Build help

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:00 PM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? 1080p Gaming, 60fps at the start but hopefully 144hz at a later date. I do some 3D modelling renders as well as Unreal Engine work but don't need anything overkill for this (mainly focusing on gaming for this build and I have no clue whats g ood in terms of combinations.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? 1920x1080, 144hz at ultra or high settings

    What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? £1000 - £1300 (1300$ - 1700$ I think?)

In what country are you purchasing your parts? UK - not sure what the gpu prices are like here with the crypto situation compared to how the were.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). ATM I was looking at a 1070ti for the GPU, my main question being what CPU to pair it with, but if you have any reccomendations for RAM, Motherboards etc. that would be appreciated. I put together a partpicker list but I have little knowledge on what's good - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/kfxV7W

Provide any additional details you wish below. I don't know too much about specific parts, I've been watching a lot of LTT to help me but I am nervous about buying parts without help from a redditor that knows what they're talking about, also I would like the PC to run pretty quietly are there certain fans and things I need as my prebuilt I currently have is very loud!

[Complete] Latest Budget Challenge Results: Ryzen 2200G for $380 that rivals an i5-4570K + GeForce 1030

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 11:34 AM PDT

A few weeks ago one of my budget builds I sold on a local Facebook Marketplace group got some traction here when OP asked about whether or not it was worth it.

I had about 20 of you PM me asking me to build one around the same price point with new parts. I present to you the results below for $380 worth of parts (photo album here):

    • Raidmax Helium Case. Has a sort of Lenovo-esque appearance.
    • AMD Ryzen 2200G non-overclocked.
    • Vega 8 APU graphics: BIOS OC'd to 1500MHz at 1.2V and set to 2048MB reserved RAM. Can go all the way up to 16GB.
    • ASRock AB350 Pro 4 ATX motherboard, SOC voltage set at 1.2V
    • 8GB Kingston (2x 4GB) DDR4 2400 RAM stable at 3066MHz with 15-15-15-35 timings
    • 275GB Crucial MX300 m.2 SSD
    • Windows 10 digital license purchased from /r/hardwareswap

Note: I could not find all the exact parts on PCPartPicker. So these are just some rough ideas to point you in the right direction. Please note that OC results may vary of course, but this build works great for Civ, Overwatch, CS:Go, PUBG, Fortnite and even can handle Far Cry 5 which shocked me. So its basically great for new AAA titles for 2017-2019 on low-medium, eSports on Med-High and older titles of course. Be sure to keep an eye open on /r/buildapcsales and your local tech shops for deals.
