    School and general use

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget: ~$500 USD (USA)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important because of travel

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15" but open to all options

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, no editing. Microsoft office, chrome, and misc. programs are the idea.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 1080p would be nice, IPS not needed. SSD preferred but not required (any size over 200GB is fine). Back-lit keyboard would be nice but not required. Solid build quality is a plus too.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Would rather be under-budget than over unless it's a really good deal.

Laptop for Photoshop and light gaming with decent battery life.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:29 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £2000 Max £1400 preferred Uk

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Ok battery life 5 hours ish good specs so it lasts a while with a decent screen and build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Reasonably I find the dell xps 15 about right.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch or less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, adobe premier (occasionally) light gaming. Netflix and google chrome tab whore.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CSGO, Motosport Manager, anything I can get to run on it, maybe some tombraider.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? decent keyboard preferably. Build quality should be good. thunderbolt 3 would be nice if possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at a few laptops such a the Xiaomi mi pro, Asus Zenbook UX331UN, Gigabyte Aero 15 or dell xps 15.

Currently i'm leaning towoards the Xiaomi mi pro but can't decide between the i5 with 8gb ram or i7 with 16gb. The price is great but am willing to spend more if i find something more suited for the long term

    New Laptop for College

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 02:09 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, under $2000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life is most important. 2 in 1 would be pretty cool but it's not a deal breaker. I would prefer a laptop that didn't have fans the volume of leafblowers.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it's light and thin enough to slip in and out of my backpack, I'm fine with it. Macbook Pros feel pretty ideal in terms of size and weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. I also wouldn't be opposed to Boot Camp Windows from Mac OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I have a 15.6" laptop right now and it's just a bit too large for transport. The bezels on it are huge though so idk. I'd be fine with a 15.6" screen but I'd prefer a slightly smaller one.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Inventor/Solidworks, Vegas Pro, Photoshop, Eclipse (or other IDEs), Light gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO, Portal 2, CIV 5, occasional AAA games. Medium-Low settings, at least 60 fps for non-AAA.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? non-mushy keyboard, good screen resolution and color, strong enough that I can throw it in my backpack and not worry about it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Was looking at the Surface Laptop and XPS series but I don't know too much about them.

    Upgrade worth the cost?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:33 AM PDT

I have been look at getting a budget gaming laptop for awhile. For what it's worth I only play a small number games a year - I'm looking at Deadfire, Divinity 2 and Far Cry 5 currently for example.

    I was planning on the Inspiron 15 i7 7577 for $2300 AUD.

But now the i5 is on sale for $1440 AUD.

Assuming the price itself isn't the issue, is it worth paying almost $900 more for the i7, extra RAM and storage?

Is there any point to custom laptops?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:47 PM PDT

Hi, I was wondering if there was any benefit to configuring a laptop through say pc specialist or on of the others as opposed to buying a stock one. Is custom laptops better or should I focus looking at the stock laptops. These are gaming laptops I am talking about.

    Thanks!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is around 2000 CAN.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Do not want 2 in 1. Do want high build quality, good battery life and portability.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important needs to be portable

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Will probably dual boot linux and windows. But windows is okay for a start

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferred screen size is 15 in.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Again high build quality and good keyboard are both pretty important to me.

Can you help me choose gaming laptop

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 12:19 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I wanted to buy a gaming laptop , but not the highest end.

I've researched some and these are the two models I liked:

    1. Dell 7577

15.5-Inch Full HD Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 1TB, Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6 GB

    1. Lenovo y720

15.6-inch full HD IPS matt Intel Core i5-7300HQ, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, 128 GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB

I know the Dell will offer me better specs for the money but what concerns me is: - heat management - long term reliability - bugs and bloatware

If someone have experience with either of them I would really appreciate to let me know.

I really can't choose between them.

    Thank you a lot!

    Budget gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:58 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $700, Hong Kong (probably gonna buy on amazon tho)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Bang for buck, good battery.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't mind hauling a relatively thick laptop around.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 8 or 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. After effects, photoshop, premiere, fortnite, pubg, rainbow six siege, gta V(?)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? a smooth 60 at medium/high @FHD (1920x1080)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need it to look as normal as possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looks normal :)

Need a new laptop for work ($2100 CAD, Canada)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2100 CAD, Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Performance and speed are the most important, then good battery life. At least 256GB SSD (512 GB SSD would be perfect).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The lower the weight the better! I am looking for something portable, but performance is more important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3" and up

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be using this laptop for my daily work, running many different programs simultaneously (translation software, Word/Excel or LibreOffice, multiple PDFs, web browser, etc.) I also do some photo editing with GIMP.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is important, as I travel a lot. I also need a good keyboard (if a French keyboard is available, even better, but not absolutely necessary).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been really happy with the Toshiba Portégé Z930-150 I bought 5 years ago. I have traveled a lot with it and it is still in great shape. Anything of that quality that would fit in the budget and last me a while would be great. I have been looking at other Toshiba laptops (Portégé X30-00S and Portégé X30-05J) but I don't know if they are as good as my old one. The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 looks great too, but is way more expensive. Thanks!

Suggest a game development / digital art laptop for a Linux user, 15" US $1500

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:48 PM PDT

Hi! Thanks for reading and taking your time to give me advice!

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Prefer under $1100, however, $1500 is okay if there's real value in it. I'm buying in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 doesn't matter to me. Good battery life is nice. 4k monitor preferred. Solid state preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lightweight would be super nice but not a must have. I don't want something heavier than 10 lbs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I will be using a Linux distro. Likely Arch, but I might have another one like Ubuntu. However—I will want to be able to interface with digital tablets as well as microphones for recording my voice. So driver compatibility is highly preferred.

I would like to avoid Macs partially because I don't like Apple Inc. products because they are less hackable. But I hate Windows for implanting blatant spyware in Windows 10. Ugh. I don't know. For some of these programs, they will only be supported on a "mainstream" OS (like Unreal), so I'll have to go to these OSs when Linux doesn't work.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" (or bigger), but I can go smaller.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to be able to draw digitally from a tablet. In addition, I want to develop games, so I need hardware that will be capable for the next 10 yrs hopefully. My current laptop can't run modern versions of OpenGL.

    • Godot
    • Unity
    • Maybe Unreal Engine stuff
    • Blender
    • Possibly Photoshop, but it costs too much
    • Android Studio, and emulating Android devices sometimes.
    • Virtual machines
    • Any games most people can play. My machine should be able to handle them, but doesn't have to be 60fps.
    • Popular programs for virtual reality programming.
    • Docker
    • Dragon Naturally Speaking?

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    I don't know.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A non-crappy trackpad would be nice. I strongly want an ethernet port and at least 2 USB ports. HDMI (or something better?) port required. Couldn't find a Ryzen that had one. I've also developed carpal tunnel, but most keyboards to help me with that are probably ones I'll plug in via USB.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I will be using this laptop as a graphics/game dev machine. I also want to do draw digitally on a tablet and have that interface with this laptop. That's not all I'll use it for though. There will be days where all I do is surf web, watch youtube, and read docs, without needing intense capabilities. I want this computer to be useful in 10 years; something that will last.

No hardware spyware is an extra plus, as well as hardware switches for wifi, but not priority.

I'd like to buy before July this year but I can wait for a cool release.

Looking for a audio/photo/video editing Laptop. USA ~$700

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 07:39 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $700 max but would prefer lower.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Form Factor does not matter, battery life is important, want best specs for money, does not need to be super crazy fast just enough to work on this stuff while away from my desktop.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Does not matter as long as it functions great.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch or less

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Sony Vegas, Ableton, Audacity. Do not need anything for gaming as I'm trying to keep this work focused.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not planning on using it for gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I love the keys on the Lenovo 420s so would prefer something similar but thats just preference. More USB ports the better. Solid build quality a plus as well.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I feel there are a ton of laptops that can work for me but don't really know where to start looking. The speed at which its renders and processes file doesn't have to be god-tier, just not slow enough to make the system crash. Also i do already have an 8gb 2400 sodimm so anything that i can pop that into to up the ram would be ideal as well. I don't go away from my desktop too often but I am mainly looking for something that will let me get some light photoshop, audio editing and video work when I do need it. Would really like the cheapest option to get me by but will pay more for some really good benefits on a model. Thanks guys!

Need a new laptop/desktop for upcoming wow expansion

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:34 PM PDT

With the announcement of the new expansion, Battle for Azeroth, Blizzard is jacking up the system requirements again. The hp laptop I already have barely runs Legion on average settings with low FPS as is so it's time to upgrade! I dig the all in one computers with huge monitors but my budget isn't all that great ($500). Btw I'm not expecting high end graphics at $500 system requirements

Laptop for general gaming and college.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:49 PM PDT

First things first, on mobile, so apologies for any mistakes.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Anything under 700$. Absolute max is 750$. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Somewhere in between battery life and best specs, 2 in 1 holds no real appeal for me at all.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness doesn't matter at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/a

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. For gaming, mostly games like TF2, LoL, Fortnight, etc. If I do want to play AAA games, I'm fine with settling for low graphics.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -See above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Having a good keyboard is probably the most important part for me, but an optical drive would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Nothing much more to add, I would prefer for it to be new, but I am fine with settling for used/refurbished. Cheers, and thanks a ton!

Good performance / not gaming / SSD options

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:49 PM PDT

~1400€ Croatia (EU) - best specs for money (SSD, CPU, memory most important, GPU not so much) - need output of 4k@60hz to my 32" screen but not through HDMI 2.0 because screen doesn't have it (not sure if intel HD graphics can get it through TB3 or I will need mDP > DP cabel.. if so, my laptop options are much more limited) - weight and thinness not important - Windows 10 - 15.6+.. maybe prefer 17.3 - working with DB and running several programs at a time which are not very well optimized - not playing games - need good keyboard and good screen quality - would like UHD screen but probably won't find for that price in EU - 16gb - not loud and no overheat/throttling - hopefully small bazzels but not very important - laptop will be turned on most of the day but wired.. don't care about battery - working mostly at night and prefer silver part of laptop where is keyboard instead black with using lights

I have been using Asus N550JV (i7-4700HQ, 16GB, IPS FHD, 128gb SSD Samsung 840PRO) for the past 4 years and now think about buying new laptop. I use 32" 4K@60Hz screen (through mDP > DP which is pretty surprising for so old laptop) so definitely need thunderbolt 3 or DP (screen doesn't have HDMI 2.0). Not sure if Intel HD can get 4k@60Hz through TB3.

I will have this N550JV laptop for 1-2 months for sure and think of buying SSD 500gb which later I would put in new laptop. Waiting to see laptops with these new i7-8XXXHQ and i7-8XXXg with integrated radeon.

Atm the most interesting to me are Dell 7577 although I read in review that SSD is pretty slow and screen is not so good unless 4k version (which is pretty expensive in my country) and keyboard not great also. Asus has many ROG models but for some they say that build quality is bad or they overheat. I need very reliable laptop.. I can't afford to be without laptop for more then few days. I never had problem with this Asus so I'm pretty satisfied with brand although it's only 1 sample :) Acer had Nitro 17 black edition but it's sold or something. Hate HP Omen keyboard with that buttons on the side. My father has Lenovo Y700-17. Build quality and screen are pretty good but laptop looks kinda too gamery and would prefer non black color if possible. I love silver part where is keyboard on my laptop and overall keys not being too close (I have big hands/fingers). MSI and Gigabyte are not available.

If Zenbook or XP are so great I could maybe extend budget a bit.

One more question about SSD... Should I use new laptop's SSD or maybe buy now some SSD to put in this laptop while I still use it (and which SSD?) and then transfer to new laptop. Is PCI-e SSD so much faster in real work (not benchmarks)?

    Thoughts?

    Thank you

    EDIT:

Some of the models (all i7-7700HQ, 16gb, SSD):

    Dell 7577 - 1400€ Asus Zenbook Pro UX550VD-BN169R - 1580€ (256gb SSD.. not sure if PCI-e or SATA3) Lenovo Y520-15IKBN 80WK009SSC - 1070€ Asus GL753VE-GC176 - 1250€ Asus GL553VE-FY030T -1300€ HP Pavilion Gaming 15-cb025nm 3QU60EA (256GB PCI-E SSD) - 1070€ Asus VivoBook N580VD-FI585R - 1430€

    Need new laptop for gaming

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:44 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $1,800 USD, Hong Kong, but I most likely will buy online (Amazon or other sites)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money. purely gaming laptops as I have a Mac pro (I know, I know) for moving around...this laptop will be plugged in most time

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is not an issue with me. Preferred not like the Predator X21 bulky

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? Anything from 15" to 17", 120-144hz with G-Sync preferred

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? CS:GO, Dota 2, Overwatch, Fortnite, WoW, Starcraft 2. Around 80+ FPS

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No preference in keyboard as long as its good. no optical drive and touch screen. best build quality for the price. finger print reader not required.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm happy to wait a little if we're close to a release date of new laptops which might drive the older models price down, but if not I'm content with what people have to suggest

    Thanks

Acer nitro V or Acer aspire e 15?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:31 PM PDT

I've been wanting to buy a new laptop since October. I've recently got a new job and I think now is the best time to do it. My max budget is $600 but if the acer nitro is worth the $100 more than I'll consider it. I just wanted know the pros and cons of the two. P.s: I'll mostly be doing light gaming (overwatch, fortnite, r6s) and graphic design. I was also wondering which had the better screen since it's a big factor for g.d

    Laptop for College and Gaming

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1200 (Give or Take). United States, more specifically, California

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is the most important. Next would probably the best specs for the money. 2 in 1 form factor would be a plus, but I'll elaborate more on that later.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are pretty important. I want something that won't weigh me down as I'm going from class to class.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer something in the 12-14 inch range.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I am a prospective business major so I'll be working with Microsoft Office programs like Excel and PowerPoint mostly. 8+ gigs of RAM would be a plus for Excel. Might dabble in some light programming. I would do some moderate gaming on this laptop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play CSGO, Hearthstone, League, HOTS, and Gmod mostly so I don't think I need something ultra powerful. I barely get 60 fps in CSGO on the lowest settings with my current laptop so anything above that would be a great improvement. Ideally I would want 100+ fps on moderate settings, but beggars can't be choosers.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really any other requirements. I'm not too picky. A good touchpad would be nice, but I would probably be using an external keyboard and mouse most of the time anyways. Touch-screen would be a plus, but it is definitely not needed. Something aesthetically pleasing would be a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I mentioned earlier, 2 in 1 form factor and touch screen would be nice. I have dabbled in the possibility of using my laptop (or a tablet potentially) to take notes in college due to convenience. If anyone has any experience using OneNote on a laptop or tablet, please feel free to tell me about it. I'm just worried that because my handwriting sucks, it wouldn't be that useful. I've also been recommended to take a look at the Surface Pro. Although it seems like it would be a great device for me, I am worried it will be dated soon due to the processor and its poor battery life. Again, this is just an fyi so feel free to ignore the need for a 2 in 1 form factor if you don't think I need it.

    Suggest a laptop for college/gaming, 15.6'', USA, ~700

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800 max, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prefer 2 in 1 but not essential, +5 hours of battery, Core-i7, decent GPU

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It's not important as long as I don't have to struggle carrying it in my backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but not essential

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6'', but can be in the range of ~14''-17.3''

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some video/audio editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The Sims 4, Diablo 3, LoL, Vermintide 2, etc. Doesn't have to run at highest settings but the specs should be enough so I won't have to experience terrible lag.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would be great if there's a touchscreen and a comfy keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. With all the preference I have set, I came up with: Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK-PUS for $799 over a similar model which is: Dell Inspiron i5577-5335BLK-PUS for $699 And they only differ in Intel-i5/i7 processors I believe. I have been told I should push my budget and invest in the first one as the SSD'd are upgradable, but I do not have extensive spec expertise so I am unsure of my final choice. What do you all think? Any help/input appreciated.

Help me pick linux-friendly amd laptop

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:52 PM PDT

My old laptop is nearing 4 years of use and has quirks. I am a physicist/neuroscientist that use the computer for a lot of programming and analysis. I also like to game. I rather go opensource if I can, and due to my research I have to be on linux. I am looking for a laptop with AMD card only (much friendlier linux experience, and better company imo)

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm in USA, in NY. My budget is not really limited, since I will be buying it on grant funds.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I usually plug in so battery life not that important. I prefer 15" monitors, but I can go bigger.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really that important. I don't mind my laptop being bulky.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux all the way.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ideal size is 15.6".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly use MATLAB, programmig in cpp and python. I play indie games that run on linux (oxygen not included, binding of isaac, etc.) and nothing very fps heavy.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The most intensive game I have is Cities Skylines. I would like to run that game, albeit I don't want low resolution. 50 fps would be ok tbh.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I use external keyboard/mouse so those are not of a big importance to me. Reliability is key, also I like to have good cooling, because it sucks if my computer overheats in the middle of a simulation.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want a high end laptop without nvidia. I guess that's all I can say. My current laptop is Asus N550JK and pretty happy with it except the audio jack, nvidia and cooling.

Laptop for Gaming/Work, time for an upgrade, but no idea what to get.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200USD. Canada or Mexico

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is fine, but definitely not required. I do some gaming, but am usually years behind in gaming, so don't need something AMAZING.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is important. Thinness lesser so.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, and sometimes Linux with a bootable drive.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3 or bigger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, and small time video editing. I am a few years behind and want to catch up on my offline RPGs. Ranging from Bioshock Infinite, to Skyrim, to Deus Ex.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium settings is fine. FPS, i have no idea. I am currently using a Samsung RF711, but without a working NVidia Card... so anything is a step up.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a decent touchpad. When gaming i use a USB keyboard. I do a lot of traveling so build quality is important, but i also treat my equipment well so it doesn't need to be made of steel! I do need USB's though. I am just now hearing about this USB-C, and don't want/need more than 1 of those... My mouse/keyboard/harddrives are all normal USBs... so atleast 2 USB ports is needed.

A built in harddrive would be amazing.

    Suggest a laptop under $1000

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:27 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800 - $1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not required. Good battery preferred.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightweight would be nice but not a requirement.

Gaming. Light photo and video editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends(max) and Overwatch(high) at 60fps at least. Recent titles at medium.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs to be sturdy enough to last minimum 3 years. Need a USB C port. Good keyboard would be nice. Touch screen, finger print reader and optical drive not required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Should be available on Amazon.

I made a similar thread 5 months ago but didn't buy then. The one I liked most back then was the Acer Swift 3 with the MX150. Is it still the best option?

    Modern laptop keyboards

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 07:55 PM PDT

Over the last five or six years, we've seen a push for laptops to be incredibly thin. This seems to have resulted in keyboards with extremely little travel. I've noticed that most consumer-grade laptops you'll find on display in a store will feel incredibly cheap in general, but the keyboards in particular do not feel good to type on.

I have used several laptops from 2008-2011 and they were not like this. HP EliteBooks, Pavilions, and Lenovo ThinkPads from these eras all had keyboards that felt great on the fingers. Unfortunately, these laptops are just too old to be using these days. I currently only own one laptop, and it is an HP Elitebook that is ten years old.

I am in the market for a new one, but I am having trouble. Can anyone recommend some laptops with great keyboards with a decent amount of travel?

I plan on using the computer for occasional video editing (no 4k, just 1080p), and Photoshop, etc. This would be a rare occurrence though. Most of the time though, I'd just be using it for basic low-power tasks and retro gaming.

I'm not looking to pay more than $500. I appreciate any input anybody can provide. Thanks.

Cheapest Laptop Possible That Can Run Scrivener

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 07:40 PM PDT

Hello, I'm looking for the cheapest Windows laptop that I can find. I plan on using it exclusively for writing. I already have a work laptop and a gaming computer.

ChromeOS doesn't run Scrivener so I probably won't get a chromebook.
