Peace Corps - Battery and Light Gaming on a Budget

Peace Corps - Battery and Light Gaming on a Budget

Peace Corps - Battery and Light Gaming on a Budget

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 01:08 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Will purchase in USA, but taking to Southern Africa for two years. I'm really trying to shoot below $350 because I'm super tight on money. $400 max, probably?

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not necessary, but if I can find a laptop to meet requirements and fit budget, maybe some Photoshop/ Illustrator use, maybe light SketchUp use.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Light gaming for entertainment, nothing super intense/ can handle lower settings: Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, Slay the Spire, Rogue Legacy, Endless Legend/ Civ/ other 4x? (gonna be more tasking, prob more difficult to meet requirements on budget not super important), Ori and the Blind Forest. Basically - single player, offline, roguelike, metroidvania, etc.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Something that can last two years out of country, will definitely be doing my best to protect it. Webcam would be great, no DVD drive necessary, SSD ideal

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been digging around and trying to find the most ideal laptop, but I'm indecisive and hoping for a diamond in the rough on this budget. Of course I've looked into the recommended, a lot of love on the Acer Aspire E5-575-33BM (easy access is really nice, have a 4GB stick of RAM from previous laptop, planning to add to whatever I get assuming I can without too much hassle), but just trying to compare to other options first. I have a friend who has recommended the HP ProBook 640 G1, but it doesn't seem like the battery life is great. I've looked through the Dell Latitudes, some look somewhat comparable? I've looked into some VivoBooks, and I feel like everything else. I've run specs on GameDebate, but feel like I'm pretending to understand specs, and would like opinions/ suggestions. Would maybe the best course of action be to get the Acer Aspire, and just purchase a SSD for it?

Should I get a high end laptop or split my budget into a high end desktop and a low end laptop?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 10:03 PM PDT

I was thinking about getting a $1000 gaming laptop for college to work and play. I figured it made sense cause dorms aren't the largest and I'd need to move around a lot. But this video raised some doubts. It says to split the budget and get a desktop-laptop combo instead. Any suggestions?

looking for a work laptop in the £300-£400 range, Uk.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 03:25 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: £300-£400

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I dont need an amazing battery, as I will mostly be doing light stuff stuff through the day. I don't need a 2 in 1. (though one would be nice) For the most part I want the best specs for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you? as long as it doesn't break my back I don't really care.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows, maybe linux

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 720p or higher is fine

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. no.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly lighter stuff, Civ, Hoi4, Hollow knight, I would like to play overwatch and fortnite, but that'll obviously depend on specs

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? needs to be able to take a bit of a battering, I use public transport a lot, so it will bump against stuff.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. intel would be nice, but i'm also fine with amd. I don't want it to get too hot.

also I want as little bloatware a possible

My total budget is around 1200€ (+-300€) and I am in Germany.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I prefer good battery life over all, after that best specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important, the device should be as thin and weightless as possible.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Linux, I will install Ubuntu Budgie.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

         12,5" and 13,3"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, this device will be mainly for University(Computer Science) and work(IT-Support). Most used programs:

         Eclipse, TeXstudio, VIM, Mathematica, Octave.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No gaming planned on this device.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Good keyboard (using a ThinkPad x230 right now, loving the keyboard)

    • Reliable build quality and exchangable parts (like the ThinkPads and Dell

    • Latitudes for example, where you can switch the displays, keyboards, battery and whatnot)

    • Extendable/upgradable RAM and SSD (so no soldered RAM)

    • good amount of connections (USB-C, USB-A, Ethernet)

    • SIM card slot

    • if possible "hot swapping" battery

    • not essentially needed but a touch screen would be nice

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • I want a device that I can use longer than 3 years.

    • It can also be a business model.

    • Right now I am using a ThinkPad x230.

    • At work we have Latitude 7280s and 7480s and I kinda like the 7280.

    • I will eventually buy 2 Displays and a Docking-Station for the new Device.

    Student laptop for around 750$

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 02:31 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget is around 750$. Probably going to buy it here in Israel but I may order it from the US like I did with my Dell XPS 13

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery is the most important factor here, but also decent specifications

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, my girlfriend will be carrying it with her all day, so I would like it to be pretty slim, but then again, not at the cost of battery life.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. My Dell XPS 13 is a little small for her, so 14-15.6 would be ideal

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No idea what programs she'll be using, but mostly Office

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD is a must, preferably a 256 GB one. Nothing else I can think of, but good build quality is welcome

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been digging around and trying to find the most ideal laptop for her, and came up with the Acer Swift 3, but the problem is it's packing a pretty small battery... So I would rather hear your suggestions on this.

Engineering student with around 700$USD budget

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 04:02 PM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:* I'm in Canada and my budget is about 950$, which is around 700$ USD.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like 2 in 1 ideally, and performance for the money is important. Anything with decent battery life is fine.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be portable, as I'll be bringing it to school every day and carrying it around a lot.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14' or below.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be doing enough programming and CAD for school to think about that when buying one, but mostly it is day to stuff and a lot of Microsoft office.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't really game.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? SSD 128 or higher, durable as I'll be carting it around everywhere.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I use my laptop a lot and want something that will last me but not break the bank as a student. A 2 in 1 is preferable but not absolutely required, and I will be using some heavy CAD software a few times a week. Thank you!

    Asus RoG series or FX

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 10:48 AM PDT

    Hey guys

i currently have an Asus GL553VD, and yesterday i noticed that there is an Asus FX502 with specs just like my own laptop, except for the graphic card, FX502 has a GTX 1060 and mine has a GTX 1050

clearly GTX 1060 is much better than 1050, and the price for both of them ( laptops ) are somehow the same!! ( with a little change ofc )

whats your opinion on this? should i sell my laptop and buy that FX502? or stick with this one? is the RoG series better than FX series in case of gaming capabilities? cus mostly i use my laptop to play games

also i noticed that there is an Asus FX553VD, and its exactly like my laptop ( rog GL553vd, in case of specs ) and its cheaper!!! (like 100$ )

i dont know about the price of laptops in USD, i compared them in my own country's currency,

    here's a link to rog gl553vd

    https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Laptops/ROG-GL553VD/specifications/

    and FX502VM

    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/FX502VM/overview/

i didnt know where to ask my question, this place was the only place i could find

    Thank you

Looking for a laptop that can play Ark: Survival Evolved

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 08:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Looking for $2000 or below, but hopefully closer to $1000 or less. Live in the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Most likely best specifications; I'd like to be able to play games on my laptop and have heard Ark is very poorly optimized

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I prefer thinner/lighter but mostly am just looking to get the job done and don't care about the physical build as much

While it's mostly just a new laptop to do basic functions such as surf the web and use microsoft office, I am hoping to be able to game on it as well. Hoping to play games such as Subnautica and Far Cry, but am pointing out Ark because it's apparently poorly optimized and machines that can handle other games well don't always do so well with Ark.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Ark: Survival Evolved, Subnautica

Looking for a laptop for up to AU$1,000 in Australia

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 08:51 PM PDT

Hello, thank you for reading this thread and helping me out.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking at under AU$1,000 (USD$750) in Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is by far more important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows only.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. A laptop that can run YouTube and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint simultaneously is important. I make videos using PowToon so being able to do that would be great too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to be able to play This War of Mine again sometime, but that's a complete and unnecessary luxury.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A keyboard that is easy to type on would be nice, but not important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. A good battery life is really important. I spend a significant amount of time commuting on buses and trains. I seem to end up buying a laptop every year so would like something that lasts this time. I can't afford more than $1,000 right now though.

    Thank you for reading. :-)

Looking for laptop that can run photoshop

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 02:30 PM PDT

I'm very new and unfamiliar to the computer world, so I need a little help. Looking for a laptop that can comfortably run PS. Though I'm pretty low on funds, I'm trying to spend max $500 if possible.

Right now I'm looking at the Lenovo IdeaPad 320. Based on my research, it seems to have all the basic requirements, but again, I'm fairly ill-informed when it comes to computers.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07B48T4NS/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A25B98I73HOXH9&psc=1#productDescription_secondary_view_div_1524254404725

Would this be a fair choice? If not, can anyone suggest something near my price range that can get the job done? I'm not a gamer or anything, so as long as it can run PS, I'm not picky.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like to have good build quality, fingerprint reader/windows hello, and a good touchpad. Touchscreen is a minor plus but not necessary
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would prefer to have 16gb of ram and 512gb of ssd. I'm looking for a laptop that will last me 3-4 years through college. I'd like an all rounder, that is light, portable, and can play a few light games.

I've looked at the XPS 13, X1 Carbon, XPS 15, and Surface Book 2. I'm leaning to the XPS 13 as the surface book and X1 look too expensive but I'm worried that the screen on the XPS 13 will be too small.

    Is this laptop worth it?

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am actually taking a look at this laptop: https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Tracer-II-15-VR800-MK-Gaming-Laptop

It's actually $1205 since the upgrade from 8 to 16gb of ram is free.

Been looking at that and when I compared it to this (https://shopineer.com/laptops/Eluktronics-Pro-X-P957HR-Thin-amp-Light-15-6-VR-Ready-Gaming) it seems similar but at a better value.

Is that the best value for a 1070 and i7 laptop?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. i want ssd. 512ssd would be nice, or 256ssd + 1k hdd. i don't need more than that.

i don't think i'm gonna connect to an external monitor.

in order of importance to me: battery life > heat > quiteness

and i want to add that i could search, but most of what i see involved vr vive. just want to make sure will work with vive pro.

    NonGamery Gaming Laptop Request

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 05:54 PM PDT

Hey guys! The title pretty much says it, my budget is 2-2.5k and I am looking for a professional looking laptop that is packing a 1070 or up in the US. I am a radio engineer by trade and the laptop will also be running some fairly demanding radio propagation and modeling software so the latest processors are attractive. My current front runner is the new Gigabyte Aero with the 8750h and 1070, but the first thing I saw on this subreddit was a warning away from gigabyte computers. So that being said, I'm not sure what is my best bet and would love some advice. Thanks!

Which of these two gaming laptops should I buy?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 12:56 PM PDT

I have found the following two laptops for the same price, about £1075GBP ($1500usd).

    1. Acer Predator Helios 300 PH317-51-787X 17.3-inch Full HD IPS Gaming Notebook (Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD & 256GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1060, VR Ready, Windows 10, Black)

    2. Alienware 15, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 with 8GB GDDR5, Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ Processor (Quad-Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.8GHz w/ Intel® Turbo Boost), 15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) 120Hz TN+WVA Anti-Glare 400-nits NVIDIA G-SYNC Enabled, 8GB DDR4 at 2400MHz (1x8GB), 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s, 6-Cell 99W Hour Battery.

The reason I don't want the 15" Acer Helios is due to the screen being really dim and inaccurate. Also I cannot afford a 17" Alienware, hence comparing a 15" to a 17". I would be happy with either size screen.

Would you recommend this laptop to play Ark: Survival Evolved?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 03:57 PM PDT

My Mac is growing old so I'm probably going to buy a new laptop soon and am looking into PC/gaming, specifically I'd like to play Ark: Survival Evolved and Subnautica. I don't care a ton about great graphics, just a reasonable frame rate and graphics that don't look like utter crap, let's say medium+ settings. I was recommended the "New Dell G7 15" but also have heard good things from Inspiron users. Would these be good purchase decisions? Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping for a laptop that costs in the low thousands or less, but would be willing to look up to $2000, price isn't a huge question for me atm because I'm just looking. I live in the US
