my GTX 780 just crapped out, but is it possibly the dumbest time to buy a 1080?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:53 AM PDT

My gpu just died and I googled 1080s and were obviously upset with the prices. I found 2 in stock left from a seller on amazon going for 100 above msrp which is the best price I could find so I impulsively ordered it. Then I googled the next gen release date and its rumored as soon as May. Should I cancel the order and just deal with no graphics card for 1-3 months? Or will the next gen prices be so high that they wont be worth buying for 7-8 months.

I am willing to spend 100 dollars more to have the gpu now, so 1080 price coming down in 3 months because a new generation of cards comes out wouldn't be a deal breaker. But being 3 years more future proofed would be worth 3 months of waiting. Especially since I have 3 1080p monitors and don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, so the next card I buy could last me ages. Thanks for any advice.

I summon - The Night King - A 9000$ build straight from my Nightmares

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 05:13 AM PDT

TL;DR: Went through some rough times... Ordered parts... The build took me a lot of time and effort... Build complete... Thank you all!

Ladies and Gentlemen... I summon The Night King

Hello /r/buildapc. Wanted to post this as a follow up on this thread I made quite a while ago plus a little bit of a background (ok... quite a lot of background but I kind of need to do this):

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/6wyp0y/50006000_watercooled_gamingeditingstreaming/

When I posted that I was going through some pretty hard times... My dad was diagnosed in early 2017 with cancer and later passed away after an up-hill battle with the illness. I wasn't stranger to the loss... lost a couple of very important people before that including my mom in 2012 but when I posted this thread I wanted to dream of something good coming from that. You see... One of my biggest dreams is to be a youtuber/streamer and before my dad fell ill I managed to save up quite a lot of money towards that working long night shifts which took a huge toll on my health... It's probably getting a bit depressing by now but there is some light in the tunnel.

I posted the thread about me wanting to make a custom build here and on Tom's Hardware and got a lot of help from all of you guys... And even though I didn't share my story back then it really put a smile on my face and gave me something to hold onto as the road ahead wasn't exactly peachy... between the medical expenses and the court battles after his passing with his second wife (who pretty much made a 180 after he passed away in terms of how she behaved) all the money I saved up were gone...

Fast forward to January 2018... I was going through some other stuff with my girlfriend and I told myself things need to change... I had gone into a routine... Work... Sleep... Video Games... Work... Sleep... and I wanted to change things because my health really deteriorated and according to doctors my immune system was in a state of disarray and incapable of fighting off foreign threats... kind of like HIV... probable cause... Measles I managed to barely survive late 2016 + all of the stress and night shifts and a ton of other stuff.

So I wanted to change things and get back in the saddle. I took out a loan (fortunately my job pays well-enough for the standards in my country) and started ordering parts... and I have to tell you... The journey after that wasn't easy.

I knew how to build PCs... I didn't know how to build such kind of monsters and I was so far removed from water cooling loops that the felt like rocket surgery once I had all the parts laid out... But with a trusty drill... a lot of youtube videos... some questions here and there I slowly progressed. The build took over 2 months as most of the parts weren't available worldwide... and about 90% of the build was ordered from outside of my country so I was essentially at the mercy of the delivery gods. The PSU came last which was a major setback because without the cables I couldn't plan the loop accordingly so I had to wait...

Bending the tubes and placing the two double pumps was by far one of the most daunting thing but what got me really anxious was the CPU... Because of a specific socket manufacturer (I won't name any names but the first part of the name rhymes with an OX) and how expensive it all was... and the fact that was the first thing I installed in a long time I had issues tightening the screws... and I panicked for about an hour that I might have bent one of the pins somehow... Good thing I had some support back then from my girlfriend still and that helped me out quite a lot. So I got on with it and we put together the CPU and MOBO + the GPU blocks that very night.

There were quite a lot of little mistakes that I was able to fix while I was waiting for the PSU such as the reservoirs being a bit tilted... rubber O-rings on the connecting block between the GPUS being missing... screws I misplaced... cabling (which I ultimately ended up ruining)... and a ton of other stuff... But at the end this is the result:

Ladies and Gentlemen... I summon The Night King

The CPU is clocked at 4.0GHz running @ 46C on full load in stress test environment. The RAM is running @ 2933 for stability reasons... I'm pretty sure I can make it stable at 3333 and even a bit more but the risks aren't worth it right now. Maybe I'll tinker with that in the future. The 2 GPUS are running stock at the moment as some games (including Overwatch) give me errors when I OC. Might be because of the SLI too but I'll have to adjust that in the future as well. All benchmarks pass with +100MHz offset on the GPU and +525MHz offset on the Mem Clock though. The Mem clock is a lot higher than most people so that probably causes instability in games. All benches in the Album are run with the current settings though. Don't want to post benches just for the sake of benching.

Still have to do quite a lot of testing though because there might be some instabilities in the future but... hey... I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

Also here is an updated list with all the parts I have (not including the waterloop and the 12 additional fans... and all the controllers and custom sleeved cables (which are GELID because cablemod had issues back when I was ordering parts and I couldn't wait for them):

Last but not least... Thank you! Thank you to all the people that responded back then... To all the wonderful youtubers sharing content on building PCs... The big guys like Jay, Paul, Kyle, Salazar (Science Studio) (he has the best tube bending guide imho) and the smaller channels like Core Technology and Gaming who's video helped me out get a better understanding of how to connect all the fans and what to actually order from Amazon.

Here's a picture of a potato if you managed to read through the novel I wrote.

    "Midnight" - $4,000 PC Build

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:40 AM PDT

    Hello /r/buildapc !

Welcome to my very first PC build. This build took about 6 hours between me and my more experienced friend. All together, after tax, it cost around $4000 USD. Overall very pleased with this build. Unfortunetly, the NZXT case came from Amazon dented :/ Didn't have the time to wait for a new one so I just touched it up with some matte black paint and it turned out alright. This whole build was completed in under 3 days from the point I ordered all the parts. Amazon Prime is a beautiful thing. Next upgrades will be braided cables and RGB fans from NZXT. I ordered the wrong fans initially so I wasn't able to install them in the initial build.

Also, if anyone could recommend a good traveling case for my PC, that would be greatly appreciated :) it's an ATX Mid tower.

    Here are the pics.

    Alienware pre-build vs build

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:20 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Desktop, gaming for indie/adventure games

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Nothing too heavy by the kind of games

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

1500$ CAD but lower would be better I guess

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I've tried to do something similar but it wasn't really at a lower cost:

So the build is for my mother. She was/is a geek and like to play games but not AAA games/shooters. She seems to prefer a pre-build with a good warranty than something I could purchase/assemble for her but still I'm trying to figure what are the options.

    Why Ryzen 5 1600 over i5 8400

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 04:58 AM PDT

Hi, long time lurker looking at the builds people put together for gaming.

Why does every build seem to use the 1600 over the 8400 when they are similarly priced and 8400 benchmarks seem to be better?

Only explanations I could think of are: -Free cooler -Motherboard future proof with support for Ryzen 2 (with BIOS update)

Can anyone enlighten me? Building first PC this summer so by no means an expert.

    <500€ Build

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 09:28 AM PDT

Sup, I'm building a second PC for my room in college town so I'm aiming for something cheap, doesn't have to have the greatest specs. I just want a Machine to run Dota, CS and maybe a bit PUBG (I'm well aware of PUBG not running great on low spec builds)

    https://geizhals.de/?cat=WL-790717

Here you can see my build as is, I'll probably change the power to a bequiet! 400W.

Should I go for an AMD due to better price/payoff or stick with intel?

    Thanks in advance!

Comparison between gtx 980 and gtx 1060 6gb

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 01:00 PM PDT

I've read that the gtx 980 and gtx 1060 6gb are similar in performance capabilities. Do you guys think its worth it to try and trade for a 1060 6gb since the 1060 6gb is newer? Alternatively, should I try and trade my gtx 980 and some cash for a gtx 1070?

    Thanks!

This is an upgrade build and I will be carrying over some parts. I included some of them in the PartPicker list to flesh out what I'm looking for. Case and Mobo are absolutely up for debate as again I needed a placeholder but the number of bays is important

    Currently I'm working with:

Intel 3770k Two 950 evo SSDs in RAID 0 with my OS - will carry over 1 Tb WD HDD - Will upgrade if advised 1 Tb 950 EVO SSD - will carry over Corsair H115 pro - probably carry over with Grizzly Kryonaut MSI 1080 Ti Gaming X 11Gb - Carrying over

I mostly need assistance as I've been overthinking and overbuilding on partpicker non-stop second guessing every part as this will be my last build for at least 5 years(minor upgrades aside)

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

First PC, joining the MasterRace - kinda went a little overboard...but still two questions. I hope this can play Minecraft

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:23 AM PDT

Hi folks! Here is my final build. I got lucky with amazon and paid $700 for the GPU, paid $120 for the SSD, 20% off the CPU, and got the monitor for only $720!

Since i'm not overclocking, is there any need for a different CPU cooler other than the stock one since I'm not running the K version. Also, are there any issues with Power Supply? PC Part Picker doesn't seem to suggest there are any issues.

I'm also probably going to drop the wifi, since I just discovered every room in my house has ethernet built into the walls already.

Obviously kidding about Minecraft....although the wife will probably rock it haha

Looking forward to sending out the build complete posts!

EDIT: these prices are in Canadian, so the cost of the GPU is actually around MSRP

New build was working up until today. I was using my PC when it froze I forced a reset and afterwards it wouldn't post and no power to peripherals. So far I have reseated the RAM power cables and video card with no luck. Any suggestions on what I should do next?

Fatal crashes happening daily - GPU failure

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:19 AM PDT

Edit #1: Thank you all. I've placed an RMA.

    Hiya,

I'm having urgent issues with my computer that I can't diagnose. For the last week or so i've been getting this irregular issue where sound and graphics will freeze up for about 10 seconds before my computer restarts. In the event log I see nothing except "The computer unexpectedly shut down". Usually it happens when I have firefox open for a few hours and I'm watching YouTube. Trying to play a video game today that hasn't triggered this previously now caused it to shut down twice in a 20 minute span.

    This is my build:

    • Ryzen 1600
    • Gigabyte GTX 1060 (3GB)
    • 16GB G-Skill DDR4
    • AB350M-Pro4 Mobo
    • Corsair CX450M

This has been working perfectly for months. The only think I can think of that would cause any issues is the graphics card. I bought it used on hardwareswap a couple of months ago. I can't check if it's the issue because I can't afford another graphics card and Ryzen has no inbuilt graphics.

    So far I've tried:
    * Reseating RAM
    * Checking PSU connections are properly plugged in
    * Watching CPU / GPU / RAM % and temps (all seem fine, same as before the issues)

Someone said I might need to undervolt. Can anyone explain what they mean by this / how to go about it?

    Thank you.

And here is the RAM I want to add. It's the same as what I have currently expect it's 16GB instead of 8. They gray one is on like a price match sale or something so it's currently $16 cheaper. The only difference in the item name is that the black one says "Intel X99 Platform" while the gray does not. Will that affect anything at all?

    i5 8600k (temporary) 1050ti mATX

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 02:59 PM PDT

Will be used for gaming at 1440p, medium to high settings (when upgraded GPU comes in, will be used for gaming at high to ultra settings) GPU is mostly temporary; will be upgraded in the future, when (hopefully) prices go down. Is this a good build for this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yYtdXP

    RX 580 cant run farcry 5, i5 6600k, help!

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 07:33 PM PDT

So i have an rx 580 4gb(not overclocked) and an i5 6600k(also not overclocked), and i cant seem to get a solid 60fps. It will sometimes get to 60 but will never stay for more than 5 seconds. Even on the lowest possible settings, and 0.5 resolution, it wont get 60fps. When im in game it says that the cpu is at 90% usage, and my gpu usage goes everywhere. But my cpu, even with 90% usage, doesnt seem to over heat, neither with the gpu(CPU around 50C, and GPU around 65C). I have 8gb ddr4 ram(2133mhz 1chl), and an h170 g1 gaming motherboard. I have tried reinstalling drivers for gpu, and even updated my bios via Q-flash to the newest one. Nothing seems to work.

My friend has a very similar setup, i5 6600k(not OC), rx 480(not OC), 8gb ddr4 ram(2133mhz 2chl), and he has no issues what so ever. Can someone help me?

I have ran user benchmark, and the only thing that comes up as underperformence is my hard drive, i dont have an SSD. Ive also ran malware bytes, it said their were some threats but got rid of them, so virus free.

Should I upgrade my 600w PSU

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 08:50 AM PDT

I am currently the owner of a Corsair CX-600W 80+ bronze PSU.

I currently have a GTX 1080 and plan on getting a 8700k and overclocking it.

Is a PSU upgrade a good idea, and if so what would you recommend?

    thanks :)

What Power Supply is best for my Gigabyte Gtx 1080 Windforce, I7 8700k, and Asus Rog Strix Z370E

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:00 AM PDT

Hey i was wondering what power supply is compatible with my mother board (Asus Z370E) and will give enough power for my Gtx 1080 Windforce and I7 8700k which all of them will not be overclocked so i will not have to worry about that. I have an EVGA 750 BQ in my current system and I'm not sure if this will be compatible with the Z370E. Thanks in advance.

Thoughts on building a gaming rig inside a PS4 PRO case?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2018 02:42 PM PDT

It seems to have some decent space inside, so it might work. Idea came to me while watching a youtuber build one inside a 360 case.... What do you think?
