Distro for a Linux beginner who uses his PC for daily-use and gaming

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:50 AM PDT

How much do you know about GNU/Linux? I'm using Linux for 2 months (on and off). I'd say about average, but I still consider myself a beginner. I don't know what to say...I got used to Linux and I feel like home. I'm fine with CLI, I know how to use 'cd', 'ls', how to edit a file with nano, how to use 'cat' and 'less', how to get software through CLI (and I rather use CLI, instead of GUI), how to update, but only so.

Do you prefer the Windows or MacOS design? I'm open for anything. However, I'd say I prefer Windows design.

Is your hardware fairly old or obscure, or is it modern / common? It is fairly modern. Kaby Lake CPU, NVIDIA GTX 10xx GPU, 8GB of RAM, SSD and HDD.

What will it be used for? Daily use and gaming (only Linux games, no Windows exclusives)

Do you have any special requirements? I'm not enthusiastic about customization. It's not one of my hobbies. But, but, over time, maybe I will get my hands-dirty. I still have a shred of curiosity and desire. We'll see.

Also, I don't want to use a super noob-friendly distro. I can troubleshoot problems with my computer by myself. I'm not Linux experienced, but I know I can use Google for my problems. Linux Wikis are awesome. ArchWiki is, probably, the most complete Linux wiki. There's a lot of awesome documentation. Just my opinion.

I prefer newer software, especially newer drivers. My GPU works better with newer proprietary drivers.

When talking about rolling-release and non-rolling-release distros, I don't have any preference. Rolling-release seems better to me, but I heard it's not recommended for Linux beginners and newcomers.

Distro Chooser Results: Manjaro, Antergos, KDE Neon, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Linux Mint, Kubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu, Debian, Elementary OS etc.

I installed Arch in a virtual machine for plenty of times, just for fun, as a challenge. I challenged myself. However, as I said before, I still consider myself a Linux beginner, so I don't think Arch suits me, yet.

EDIT: Thank you for all of your advice, guys! You're awesome! I've tried Kubuntu and KDE Neon in a VM. Both distros are awesome, but KDE Plasma didn't suit me. It simply doesn't work for me. It's not my thing.

I chose Xubuntu, Manjaro XFCE and Solus Budgie, but I'm still open for suggestions.

2nd EDIT - FINAL EDIT: I drew a conclusion: I will go for Solus Budgie. You convinced me to go for Solus. Thank you again, guys!

When I boot my live USB with UBUNTU 16.04, and click on try, I get this instead of Ubuntu booting?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:05 PM PDT

When I boot the Usb and click on try without installing, it shows me these two screens before booting the actual OS about 5-6 minutes later. Im planning on installing Ubuntu on a second device from inside Ubuntu (try mode) but, does this point to an error? I tried redownloading Ubuntu and creating live USB again, same result though. I also get this last screen once Ubuntu actually loads. Is this normal then?

    Interactive Artwork

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:12 PM PDT

    Hi!

I was wondering if there's is such program or if somebody have and answer to do this:

I want to put six 20" touch screens on line on a wall that are goin to show a drop falling in a bowl with water on loop. This is going to be part of a interactive art show.

Each screen is independent from the other. For this I'm going to use a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B motherboard and a friend of mine is helping me with the Linux programming and stuff and since he's doing me a favor I want to collaborate with him as much as I can so I'm gathering information.

I want people to see the drop striking the water, and I'm going to record the clip with 50mm macro lens at 960 FPS and use Twixtor to slow down a little bit more.

So far so good. Now, I need this to be interactive with people, so I'll figured " What if the drop is falling at normal time and when the person touches the screen it slows down very dramatically (slow motion), but then when the finger is released the drop continues to fall on normal time". I want to know how to create the slow motion effect when holding finger on screen.

I don't now if someone has knowledge on this kind of programming, or if there's any other way to do this.

    Thanks on advance!

Linux MInt 18.3 post installation: Driving me crazy. Acer r15 571T BIOS won't enable GRUB to load OS

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:08 PM PDT

I have a link to this reddit for some details.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/8c4j08/i_screwed_up_installation_cant_access_windows_10/

I have tried selecting a trusted EFI source in the BIOS menu and this hasn't worked either. Grubx64.efi isn't doing anything. I have exhausted every setting in BIOS. I no longer have an active W10 partition I chose to delete it any ways, all my data is backed up. I don't know what to do, but this is incredibly beyond my level of tech knowledge.

Pictures will need to be from my phone via imgur, let me know if you need them for looking at the BIOS screen.

The sticky post on this sub insinuates Linux is only a good replacement for Windows XP. Can we change it to: "Welcome Computer Enthusiasts"?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:57 AM PDT

The choice to get your feet wet in Linux shouldn't con-notate Windows XP as the latest technology to replace. If someone is savvy enough to even try GNU/Linux, they're already on their way to toying with the most powerful OS in the world. We should recognize that, and place Windows in another category all-together.

    Thanks for any consideration.

Printing problems with Linux Mint and Hplaserjet 1200

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:03 PM PDT

I am having trouble printing to my ancient HP Laserjet 1200 on Linux Mint. It says that the print job is going through and I just get a blinking light on my printer. Sometimes if I power down my laptop and reboot I can get it to print and eveything works fine after that but I have to monkey with it resetting my laptop and printer several times to get it to work. I am also getting an "PC XL error" that says "Illegal Tag" on occasion.

Arch linux - changing console loglevel?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:10 PM PDT

    Hi.

I don't use any login managers but a simple startx to log to i3. But the small problem I have before I login is that the console gets flooded with messages from ufw/kernel before I log in.

Is that the loglevel that I have to change with kernel.printk? I'm not really sure what to do here.

    Icon Issues for XFCE4

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:49 AM PDT

    sudo apt install greeting --hello

I recent install Xubuntu on my laptop after deciding Windows 10 had annoyed me for the last time. I got everything set up the way I wanted except for one thing: the icons. The current icon theme Acvamarin, which I believe hasn't been updated in a long time, and due to this there are several different icons missing throughout the system. It's not that big of a deal, but I was just wondering if there was any way I could possibly set up either the xsettings xml file to use a fallback icon set or set a fallback icon set elsewhere, or an even more simple solution would be if you know anyone who forked and finished the icon set Acvamarin! Thanks in advanced!

    How do I linux?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:22 AM PDT

I am stupid and have spent days trying to figure out how to get linux onto my computer, to no avail. Have read lots of articles, tried to install several times, and have failed in every way. Specifics:

-Computer has 1.5 gigs ram, 100 gigs of storage, currently has windows.

-Need to run firefox, Tor browser, VPN, basic office software (word, excel, etc.)

-Prefer system that is easier for newbs

-Prefer system that allows somewhat limited hardware to run at a good speed

I have tried to install several different versions, and could not get any to run properly. I still haven't been able to figure out if I store the ISO image on the USB that I want to run linux off of, or if I should store it on the computer and then just tell the software that makes the USB where the ISO is. Tried both ways, couldn't get it to work. Tried several different programs to make the USB, still couldn't get it to work.

    Questions:

    1. Is there a stupidly easy way to get linux onto my computer? Like something where I can just download an exe file, and hit "install" and then it will install it?

    2. If I have to do the "download the ISO then use the software to make the USB" method, literally where do I save the ISO image? On the USB or on the hard drive?

    3. Which USB creator software should I use?

    4. Or is there someplace I can order a flash drive or a CD? Nice if it's free, but "even old people can figure this out" ease of installation is even important.

    5. As a last resort, is there just someplace I can buy a netbook or cheap laptop with linux already on it under $200?

    Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu server: add drive with webmin/fstab/other option? also permissions

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 07:57 AM PDT

I have a small HP proliant server at home with ubuntu server 16.04.

Normally I would add a drive writing the UUID in the fstab file, but It's a bit difficult. If I make a mistake and don't specify "no fail" ubuntu won't start and I need to modify fstab from the grub. And even with what seems to be the correct UUID it fails for my 3rd drive.

I installed webmin, it's neat, and there is a menu for logical volume management but there are too many options I couldn't figure out.

I just want to add a 3rd drive to the server easily, just for basic storage.

Also every time I create a new folder I'm running into user and permission issues. I use console or webmin to add all permissions. I know this is not secure. I just want to access all my drives easily, a bit like a distribution file manager shows all drives and doesn't ask for authorizations.

    Thank you for your patience!

    SSD+HDD partition scheme help

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 02:00 AM PDT

My PC has a 240GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.

My plan is to install Fedora 27, using the SSD for programs, boot drive, etc and the HDD for all my files and user data/configuration stuff. These should be ONLY on these drives, and not spread out between them. IE: SSD should not share the /usr partition with the HDD.

    My plan:

    SSD Partiton Proposed Size
    / 30GB
    /usr 202GB?
    Swap 8GB
    HDD Partion Proposed Size
    /home Entire HDD

If you have any critque, ideas, and such, please feel free to add them.

Finally want to figure out what's going on between Intel Graphics and Nvidia on my laptop

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 10:58 PM PDT

Hey everyone. I've been confused about this for a while. I run Manjaro on an XPS 15 9560 which features integrated Intel graphics alongside an Nvidia card. For the longest time I can't figure out which one runs the show. I don't do any gaming on Linux or anything with heavy graphics, so I'd rather Nvidia just stays out of the picture. On one hand, when I follow steps to blacklist and disable Nvidia, it seems like Manjaro already did all of that automatically. On the other hand, when I ask questions online about why my Chrome or anything Chromium based shows weird flickering, people roll their eyes and tell me it's the fault of using a bad version of nvidia drivers. So which is it? Is the Nvidia card rulining my graphical experience, or is it disabled? Hoping to get some clues how to find out, and how to make sure I'm running an Intel graphics only system. Thanks!

    Linux OS for a cellphone?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 04:18 PM PDT

Is there a Linux OS for a cellphone? I don't mean a desktop distro running on a cellphone, but a real cellphone OS, with calling and mobile data usage. I don't care about Android apps since honestly, beyond vontacts, calendars and alarms, email, web browsing and multimedia, I use nothing else.

I am seeking the peace of mind and privacy I enjoy using Linux on the desktop

Unetbootin won't recognize the .iso I have of elementary OS.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 08:00 PM PDT

I'm using my windoze computer to create it, and I thought there was an option to be able to put any .iso onto a USB drive so you can install (or at least live boot) any distro you chose.

BUT when I try selecting the USB drive letter in Unetbootin, it does not recognize the drive. It worked before using another program (Lili usb creator). Does elementary OS have compat issues with unetbootin? Is this a known bug? Thanks.

Can't open a text file(unicode) in gedit : "Unexpected error: Invalid byte sequence in conversion input"

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 03:08 AM PDT

I'm doing a research project in NLP. For that I have to analyze a unicode (Sinhala) text file around 10mb and it opens in Google doc. But when I try to open it from gedit I'm getting this error

Unexpected error: Invalid byte sequence in conversion input

So, I followed this same type of question and tried 2nd answer which is running

    gsettings set org.gnome.gedit.preferences.encodings auto-detected "['UTF-8', 'CURRENT', 'ISO-8859-15', 'UTF-16']"

on terminal and got this as the result in the terminal

GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings will not be saved or shared with other applications. No such key "auto-detected"

So, no success. Stil when I try to open the file in gedit, I'm getting the same error. How can I fix this ? How can I open this file in gedit
