The latest ASUS Zephyrus M has a gysnc display but can switch between iGPU and dGPU to enable Nvidia Optimus. How is it possible?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 11:23 AM PDT

Saw the review from Dave Lee's channel and he mentioned that it can do this. How is it possible? Can it be ported to other laptops if its software based?

ASUS ROG Strix GL502VS - UHD Screen?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:47 AM PDT

I found online a Strix GL502VS with gtx 1070 and a UHD screen option. Model number is Asus ROG STRIX GL502VS-FI144T. When I tried searching online for anything official for it, I could not find anything. I have tried searching for a GL502VS with UHD and still couldn't find anything. Is there any way to get the official documentation or certify the authenticity of this model?

    8750H, 8850H or 8950HK?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:35 AM PDT

Heyo all, so I plan to upgrade my Razer Blade (7700HQ) with the refresh that'll come in a few months, and can't decide between a 14" with a 8750H/GTX1060, or a 17" with a 8850H(might even be 8950HK, nobody knows)/1080!

My issue is, I don't need the 1080 as I'll be using a Razer Core V2 with a 1080ti in it, mostly to offput the heat, so the 1080 model seems overkill, but I really want the better CPU power. There's also the fact that the 1060 is 3" smaller and way lighter.

I plan to mostly play and stream Overwatch, so is the higher end CPU worth the extra money and laptop size, or am I seeing diminishing returns here and should stick with the slower core?

    Thanks and regards, Vizz.

Looking for laptop for linux - AMD GPU + 4/6/8 Core CPU + 16GB + NVME + NO SPINNING DRIVE

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:41 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking for a laptop to use with Linux. I'd like an AMD GPU since the linux drivers are better with those, and either a Ryzen 8-core, or kaby lake/coffee lake 4-core or 6-core. I don't want to pay for a spinning drive that I'll just rip out anyway, and ideally would like an nvme instead of SATA SSD (although I can accept SATA if needed). Also want backlit keys, and freesync if possible.

    Does my dream laptop exist?

the thought of cobbling together my own mobile solution with a Freesync display + mechanical keyboard + intel NUC strapped to the back of the monitor + lipo batteries has crossed my mind more often than it should..

    More 8750H laptops coming?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 01:08 PM PDT

I'm going to be making a laptop purchase soon. There was an initial wave of new laptops with 8750H's in them but some notable brands were missing: Razer, EVGA, Alienware 13, Lenovo, HP Omen, etc.

I'm fully aware of the whole "If you're gonna wait for the next technology to come out, you'll be waiting forever" adage. I'm not planning on waiting until new GPU models come out. Just curious if anyone has heard anything from these other brands. My searches haven't turned up anything.

Does Dell Sell Inpirons with a GTX 1060 without MAX-Q?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:52 PM PDT

Recently I saw a Dell deal on Microsoft's online shop , took a careful looked at the specs and got it cuz it was 200 off.

I started to look at the laptop's specific benchmarks but all im finding in YouTube are videos of Inspiron but with the 1060 MAX-Q architecture and nothing about just the 1060 laptop graphics card that nvidia has released for its laptop line up.

I know MAX-Q will sacrifice performance and it was something i was trying to avoid while looking for a sort of budget 1060 laptop but as you can see from my link, there is nothing on the microsoft page that said it used the MAX-Q architecture and I would indeed be disappointed if that was what I got as 1) I was never clearly informed of this 2) I'm planning to run games like Far Cry 5, PUBG, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands and GTA:V where I researched that the 1060 laptop graphics card together with an i5 7300hq would just barely make it to hit 60 fps on high settings for FC5 and gta V and medium for grw and pubg.

Help me choose a thunderbolt docking station!

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 10:14 AM PDT

I'm hoping to get a good docking station for a 2018 XPS 13. Here's what I'm looking for:

    • Connect the docking station to the laptop with ONE cable and no fuss.
    • Connect it to a 1440p ultra-wide 32"-34" monitor
    • Hard-wired to my internet
    • Connected to peripherals, so enough USB support for mechanical keyboard, microphone, webcam, mouse, and wireless headphones, external hard drive (or support to use a USB hub)
    • Quiet (I heard the Dell TB16 is LOUD, that'd be a no go)

Gigabyte Aero 15x vs Hp Spectre X360 15

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:49 AM PDT

Hey guys, tossing up between these two laptops.

    https://www.gigabyte.com/au/Laptop/AERO-15X--i7-8750H#sp

    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=3WP19PA&opt=&sel=NTB

    Gigabyte - $3299 (512GB, 1080p) or $3699 (4K) HP - $3199 (360GB) or $3699 (1TB)

Budget: $4,000 max or 1 Kidney Country: Australia Screen size: 15 Screen resolution: 1080p+ Touch screen: Optional Weight: 2.25kg or less Is battery life an issue? Yes, decent uncharged photoshop (basic stuff) & web browsing, 5hrs+ would be great but 3hr+ would do me. CPU: 8th Gen

I use my laptop for photo & video editing primarily. I used to be a heavy gamer (AAA stuff), not as much now but still would like the ability to run demanding games and other programs if need be. Numpad is a must due to accounting work. 90%+ coverage of the sRGB spectrum (I don't edit or take photos in Adobe RGB so I don't need it, nice if it's there though).

I was originally planning on getting the Spectre when it was announced at CES 2018 however it's taken forever to release and the new 8th gen CPUs have dropped which Gigabyte upgraded their AERO line to (number 2/3 choice at CES due to old CPUs & shoddy display reviews).

Pros of the Gigabyte over the HP for me is how much more power it's packing & ports. Also the pantone calibration and matte screen are nice as I like working outside when possible. Can expand the hard drive and ram as well easily (empty slot for each).

Pros of the HP over the Gigabyte, functionality due to form factor. However based off reviews for the Dell 2 in 1 15 (same chip set with 4k screens so I figure should be close enough) for battery, it seems to drain real fast. HP does have a slightly bigger battery though over the Dell.

I'm leaning towards the Gigabyte (1080p) but the potential loss of function options in the HP is the only thing stopping me as well as HP support if anything goes wrong. Haven't heard great things about Gigabyte. :/

Need some internet guidance/reassurance to make me pull the trigger. Let me know what you guys think of each one or if there's a mystery 3rd laptop I should be looking at.

Upgrading from a Asus N56V 720p so either will be a huge performance boost. Would like the new laptop to last at least 4 - 5 years for the amount they cost.

How long do you think Windows 10 will be supported on a 2012 laptop with 3rd gen Intel CPU?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:42 AM PDT

I'm thinking of buying Thinkpad 430 and it was released in June 2012 and has a 3rd gen Intel CPU.

Should I be worried that Windows 10 will no longer support such laptops in the near future? How many years can I expect to have Windows supported on it for?

multiple programs with as little lag as possible!

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 09:03 AM PDT

A laptop that is as fast as possible for multiple word documents, media players, multi tabbing in my browser etc. Obviously this is a strangely specific set of requirements. I'm travelling around a fair amount and studying and I want to have literally no lag even if I have word docs, spreadsheets, media players, skype etc. open with as little lag as possible.

I suppose a gaming laptop would be a waste because graphics cards have no effect on speed if I'm not gaming?

If I just install a SSD and lots of RAM (I have 8GB now) will that increase the speed? I don't know jack about computers.

Swapped my Asus Hard Drive with my Mom’s Dell Hard Drive

I swapped hard drives so she could retrieve her files back and she allowed me to keep it. But, could I do a factory reset and will it give me dell drivers or Asus drivers (if that makes sense). If you need more information, please ask away.

In South-East Queensland, Australia looking for a laptop for under $100

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 05:01 AM PDT

This may come across as self-centered or something, but I'm dirt poor. Also, I hope that this is the appropriate sub to ask this in. Currently in South East Brisbane, Australia.

I'm currently looking to get a couple of laptops for use for different reasons, doesn't have to be a recent model or anything. Primarily, the operating system should be Windows XP or 7. My budget is at most $100 or close to it per laptop.

Any suggestions on where to look?

    The Form thingie filled out:

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget of $100 per laptop in South East Queensland, Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not looking for a 2 in 1 form factor, a working battery I would like.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows XP / 7 primarily.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If I could get 2 laptops, one would be used for minor gaming, not anything major, something like Minecraft at most. Otherwise just office related.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Again, if I could have one for gaming, it'll be things like Minecraft.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard/touchpad and optical drive, not looking for figer print reader or touch screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. NA

Advices on buying a new laptop

    Posted: 14 Apr 2018 12:14 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm planning to buy a new laptop soon. I don't have any emergency, so if it's better to wait for the 8th gen intel proc, I'll wait.

    My needs are:

    • All the generic stuff you do on a computer, need it to be fast and responsive, I need windows for work reasons

    • No gaming

    • Light weight, good screen and decent battery life. Price range: 1000-1500$

Basically, I want a powerfull computer, without the fancy gpu, that I can transport everywhere I go. I looked up the Dell XPS13 but there seems to be a fair amount of issues with it according to the reviews. Otherwise it could have been the perfect fit.

Would you advise me to wait for the news gen ? Do you see any computer already available that would fit my needs ?

    Thank you !

Ps: I already read the wiki, asking if there is any additional opinions.

Portable USB-C Monitor (power pass-through options?)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 06:51 PM PDT

I have a Windows Tablet (Surface-like) with only a single USB-C port. I've been looking at one of the USB-C portable monitors to carry around, like the Asus ZenScreen.

It's great because it folds up to tablet size and can power off a USB-C port.

However, since my laptop only has one USB-C port, how can I also plug in the laptop power AND use the screen?

Are there any portable screens that have USB-C Power passthrough? Or any dongle that provides this in the middle of a data channel?

I haven't been able to find anything and I've spent the last hour or so on newegg and google searching for "USB-C passthrough portable monitor" and "USB-C Power passthrough adapter", etc.

I'm hoping I've just missed something.
