Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:46 AM PDT I started using linux (ubuntu) for the first time late last year. I have made our small office (5 people) paperless and no longer dependent on installing software on a PC, our job is pretty much browser based. We have a new starter on Monday and when preparing their PC I thought, well; they don't need Windows 10... Don't really need advice but wanted to share. [link] [comments] |

make nano default program for text files? [Opensuse Tumbleweed XFCE] Posted: 25 Apr 2018 08:12 AM PDT Essentially I'd like to be able to double click a text file in thunar and instead of it opening in leafpad to instead start a terminal and use nano. I was wondering if there is a command I could use in the "Use a custom command" field, found after clicking "open with other application" in thunar. [link] [comments] |
Lubuntu: I get an 'dpkg was interrupted' error every time I try installing apps via Software Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:11 AM PDT I run Lubuntu 17.10 on Asus A43SV. The full error message sounds: But, when I run the command in the Terminal (as a sudo), I receive this: Where do I go from here? I'm a beginner. [link] [comments] |
Confused about the difference between GNU/Linux distros Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:40 AM PDT So I am a little big confused about what actually makes the various distros different. I think of a linux distro as the glue connecting a hodgepodge of programs that are mostly independent of the distribution (the major exception that i know if is the package manager) and the main difference between the distributions are the default configurations of those software. Is this correct for different distros? Is this only correct for distros that are derived from each other (e.g. like Debian -> Ubuntu -> Mint or Arch -> Manjaro)? I realize that for instance Manjaro and Ubuntu have a different development cycles but when i have the same DE/software and customizations for the distros they seem almost identical. I have uses Gnome Ubuntu 16.04 as my daily driver for about a year. I currently have Manjaro with KDE on my laptop but previously had Mint. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
NFS mount works with version 3, hangs with version 4 Posted: 25 Apr 2018 08:36 AM PDT My /etc/fstab on server plex.domain.local looks has the following line: I can correctly connect to the share this way. But if I remove nfsvers=3 and use the defaults, or try to use nfs4, the client hangs. /etc/exports on the server (NAS): Any help is greatly appreciated! :) [link] [comments] |
Guide to configure dhcp server for home network. Posted: 25 Apr 2018 04:34 AM PDT Despite being capable of: Configure dhcp server Understand network interfaces Create VMs with KMV I can't manage to get my multiple VMs and other computers at home to get their ip from my dhcp server located in a VM. The VMs are currently grabbing the ip from the bridged interface configured at the host. [link] [comments] |
How to change default lock-after-suspend? Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:11 PM PDT I currently use i3lock for lockscreen, and would like to use this to lock my screen on suspend instead of the default dm-tool -lock.. [link] [comments] |
How could I make a music player widget to be a part of my gtk table Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:14 PM PDT Operating system: Raspbian latest version I'm trying to create a user interface for a music project and I've been using GTK 3.0 to do it. Right now I have a window containing a 2x2 table. In each part of the table I want to place a different widget. One of the widgets I would like to try to implement would be a list of songs that would be read from the music file on raspberry pi, and each song could be selected/played. 1. Is is possible to create a widget as I've described and simply add it to the table of widgets? 2. Any other ideas on how I could approach this problem? [link] [comments] |
Better Bluetooth, and how to send more files? Posted: 25 Apr 2018 07:54 AM PDT I needed to send some files to my phone quickly from my Linux Computer (Ubuntu 16.04) so I opted to try and use the Bluetooth. I got it working, but not without issues. For one, it's incredibly slow. I've had no issues connecting this phone to other Bluetooth devices and it's always worked fine. However, now I'm lucky if it goes over 50 kB/s for transfer speed. An 8 mb file takes about five minutes to transfer. I can't seem to get it to send more than one file at a time. I can select multiple files, but then there is no button to send them all. The only way I've found to send them is double-click on the file I want to send, which makes it impossible to send more than one file at a time. Any help is appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Would a basic Arch Linux install work on an old netbook? Posted: 24 Apr 2018 04:07 PM PDT Background information Hello, I am new to Linux, I have been learning lots and found I enjoy it. What I am trying to do I am looking to revive an old netbook, I have tried a few live images and found nothing that I have tried works or runs too smoothly. What I plan to do The next option that I am looking to explore is to install Arch Linux, add a desktop interface and install a browser. My question Would this be a good way of creating a light weight build to revive an old netbook? Or are there some existing distros that will be lighter and more suitable for my needs? [UBUNTU] Question regarding AMD Dual Graphics Laptop Posted: 25 Apr 2018 10:36 AM PDT Hi. I have Lennovo Ideapad 310 laptop. It has switchable AMD graphics, onboard and 2GB GPU. I run Ubuntu 17.10. Whenever I play HD videos on VLC or YouTube it stutters a lot. I am guessing that the system is not using the GPU and only using onboard graphics. Here is my lspci output. I notice that my GPU is listed as Display Controller and onboard graphics is listed as VGA compatible. [link] [comments] |

OneNote screen clipping tool/AutoHotKey Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:33 AM PDT Hi, I'm looking at switching to Linux Mint and I'm doing some testing before I commit and make the switch. The first thing I use a lot throughout the day is the ON screen-clipping tool, and the ability to paste that into a ON page. Secondly I use a lot of AHK scripts to perform certain tasks (namely key rebinding and mouse movements/clicks). Are there any alternatives or ways to make these two programs work on a Linux install? Arch, I keep getting this output everytime I use a TTY or terminal emulator, how do I fix it? Posted: 24 Apr 2018 05:19 PM PDT I have checked the relevant details out in Arch Wiki - or at least what I think are the right things, but I'm here, since somebody out there might have had the same thing happen. It's not system breaking, but it is rather annoying. EDIT: Added some relevant details, including another annoying but not system breaking thing. EDIT 2: sudo /etc/sudoers: Not a directory is the addtional annoying but not system breaking thing. [link] [comments] |
