Bought a new(?) laptop and it shows 1 user named "Fraud"

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:32 AM PDT

I just bought a Surface Book through Amazon and the seller was a third party (listing here)

I just turned it on to find it wasn't wiped, so there's still a user account, even though it's supposed to be brand new. The user is named "Fraud" which is bizarre and makes me worried. I contacted the seller asking what's going on but I'm not sure if I'd trust an answer.

What do I do? Return it I guess? It has some very minor, almost not-noticeable scuff marks on 2 of the corners so I think it's NOT new... But if the seller is a liar, am I supposed to contact Amazon or something to report them?

Sorry if this is the wrong sub! I'm not sure where to ask about this...

    Laptop USB C-type Charging

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:38 PM PDT

My laptop Acer Swift 3 SF315 supports USB C type charging....But my Powerbank gives a 5V/2A output....

I can use a simple normal charger to C-type charging converter to charge my laptop...

Will that be okay? Or will it be harmful in the end?

I have seen many people using a 5V/2V charger and and C-type converter to charge their phonee having a C-type USB port...

Can I do the same for a Laptop?

Why Can't We Turn Off Charging in Laptops from the OS ?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:33 AM PDT

Was wondering if we could turn off charging manually when using for long..Since we shouldn't be charging our laptop and draining it's battery simultaneously wouldn't it be better if you could just turn off charging in the OS itself and possibly, automate it..if you are rendering a video and it's gonna take time, it could automatically charge and stop charging...

    Geeeeeeeez laptops!

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 04:11 AM PDT

It has been two months that I have been researching for a good laptop. But it is almost impossible to find a laptop good and that doesn't have any major problem. You might think that paying a lot of money should be a guaranty of quality.. But NOPE! Dell/Microsoft/Asus/MSI/Gigabyte and so on.. All valid products on paper, but everyone has at least some an issue with their device. I understand that people tend to make the problem bigger or be very very peaky.. But I think it is a good marker of how good or well built are these products.

So, I am asking you redditors: which laptop do you think is worth to buy? Assuming to a have a lenient wallet and the use is for a bit of everything (gaming/everyday use/content creation/business)?

HP Envy 13 i7 or Asus zenbook ux430/331?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT

Getting a new work laptop and torn between the two. I'm swaying towards the HP Envy 13 but here in the UK there isn't an 8th Gen i7 version yet and I can't find any information of when it will be released.

Anyone got any experiences of either devices?

whats the best laptop available for academics?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:46 PM PDT

Hi, i'm about to enter graduate school and it appears that my life will become pretty nomadic. I need something reliable which will also last. I plan on writing, reading, doing video conferences, power-point and related presentation oriented stuff and a little gaming on whatever I end up going with. I haven't kept up with the laptop, or the computer world in general, in years, so I'm out of the loop. If anyone could suggest anything meeting these requirements, thank you. My price range is around 1500$. I'm hoping that it will last me throughout my graduate schooling (5 or so years).

Thinking about getting the 2018 HP Spectre x360, is this the best choice for a 2 in 1?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 06:44 AM PDT

I am going to be getting a new laptop soon, moving from my 2014 macbook pro, and am currently thinking the best option is the new HP Spectre x360.

What made me eye the Spectre is that the 2018 variant can come with the 8705g cpu, the screen, and the battery. Is there another product I'm missing? I don't want to spend almost $3,000 and find out there was a laptop better suited for me. Thanks.

Suggestion for a nice looking laptop for studying and light gaming [7-800$] [Denmark]

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:30 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: 7-800$ in Denmark

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2 in 1, but a good battery life would be nice

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight isn't super important, but thinness is important so that it looks "slick"

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly for studying, but also needs to run Hearthstone at a decent framerate (30 FPS)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Hearthstone at 30 FPS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? None

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like to find a computer that looks nice, clean and thin (a la a macbook/acer swift etc.)

Hope you can help me :)

Just received my Aero15X, a few problems

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:44 AM PDT

This laptop has a few problems and I will return it if I can't fix the keyboard problem

    1. Light bleeding, but it is a common problem for IPS i think

    2. Keyboard auto press, somehow the key Q A Z will input automatically. Reinstalled the keyboard driver doesn't solve the problem, but it is much better.

    3. Function key doesn't work. When I use "Fn" + F1-10, I can only control the sound. The other short cut have no response at all. I have tested on key combination website and all combination with "Fn" are not working except the sound short cut. I have no idea how to fix this one. If anyone had solved this kind of problem, please share your solution.

      UPDATE

      • Fixed by uninstall, reboot, and reinstall the SmartManager
    4. Graphic card driver problem, all games won't launch because the system doesn't switch to the 1070gpu. I have reinstalled the driver to solve this problem.

    5. Battery life only has 3 hours for normal use. I charged it to 100% before using it but it only lasted around 3 hours. I'm changing it again and test it tomorrow.

    6. Fans noise is like my old razer blade. It is not ver loud, but it is still annoying for me. I was just playing CS:GO and the noise it high enough to cover every sounds in the game. I have no idea what will happen if I play star wars battlefront 2.

Overall this is a nice laptop, but the keyboard is really terrible. It is okay for me if I can fix the function key problem. Otherwise I will return it since it is a $2299 laptop, the quality shouldn't like that.

Does anyone else have keyboard issues with the Dell XPS 13 9370?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:07 PM PDT

Hey y'all, got the new XPS 13 about a month ago and I've had some keyboard issues. I'm a relatively fast typer but nothing that far out of the norm (90-100 wpm) and the keyboard relatively often will lose a key or mix the order of two keys that I press. It seems to happen most often with the A and E keys, which makes me fear it is a hardware issue. Has anyone else had a similar issue? Was there any solution?

Can I have your feedback on this Lenovo IdeaPad 720S

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 12:05 PM PDT

How much would notebookcheck give on the Lenovo Ideapad 720S

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for a working laptop for my next company, but I would like to bring it at home and play some light/medium games in there also.

Battery is also quite important for me, and overall quality build of course. I found that the Lenovo Ideapad 720S that i'm looking for has a NVIDIA 1050 TI MaxQ and a good i7 7700HQ processor. The only thing that I see that could be maybe an issue is the 8gb of ram but that's upgradable so.. I think it's a great fit.

What do you guys think ? Thanks a lot :)

Looking to buy an XPS: discrete nVIDIA graphics card Vs. i7-8550U

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:52 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm looking to buy a new XPS laptop for work. The two options I'm looking at are the XPS 13, which has an on board Intel graphics card and a i7-8550U processor, and the XPS 15, which has a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 card but i7-7700HQ processor. Which configuration will offer the biggest performance boost/hit? THANK YOU.

Aero 15X V8 - windows will no longer boot

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 10:44 PM PDT

So I recently started a thread on here about adding a second m.2 NVMe SSD in the spare slot. My HP EX920 SSD arrived yesterday and I popped it straight in. Had problems immediately as the drive was recognised by the BIOS under the NVMe devices tab but would not show up in Windows Disk Management no matter what I tried.

So back and forth between windows and the BIOS and making sure the drive was seated properly (it was). I tried recovery options at start up with f9 and chose the option to 'reset UEFI' - at least that's what I think it said!

The laptop restarted and in disk management I could finally see the new drive! Got to work on formatting it as an NTFS and installed a few games on it before bed which worked fine.

Woke up in the morning, turn on the laptop and windows will no longer load. Just kicks me straight to the BIOS and in boot order the only drive that appears is indeed the drive that contains windows.. the only way windows will load is if I remove the second HP SSD. This is getting really frustrating because I just can't figure out what is up and I'm not too savvy with BIOS settings. It doesn't help that there are HARDLY any options in Gigabyte BIOS.

Can anyone lend a hand? I'd appreciate it so much!

I'd also like to note that upon putting the SSD in to the second slot, windows would take about 3 or 4 minutes to boot. That was when it actually did boot - as my message says, it doesn't any more. Just kicks me to the BIOS after about 2 minutes of a dark screen.

Looking for a cheap laptop for programming, photoshop, netflix and spotify

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:21 AM PDT

Is a touchpad detatchable keyboard an option? It could be if I can use it for those purposes and its cheaper.

Got no issues with as low as an 11 inch screen.

What I do need however are at least 2, preferably 3+ USB ports.

Don't really need a HDMI port but that would be a plus

Shold preferably cost around 200-300 euro but I'm willing to pay as much as 500 euro

Edit: battery life doesn't matter since I'll be keeping it plugged in

I'd like to use W10 on it.

I'll probably do some 3d-modelling with blender or maya.

If my needs are too steep for the price, please tell me so but not in a rude way.

    Thanks <3

    Boot Loop problem with Lenovo.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 09:21 AM PDT

Lenovo G580 stuck in a boot loop. I am not computer savvy, but I tried as many of the fixes on the youtube videos as I could, to no avail. I live in a far southwest suburb of Chicago, and would drive far, and pay anyone who can please fix this. (I went to a computer shop near me and the gentleman told me he could not fix that type of problem.) PM me if interested.

    Thank you.

    Aero 15X first impressions!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 02:45 PM PDT

Received my Gigabyte Aero 15X (1080p/144Hz model but with extra 512Gb SSD and an extra stick of 16Gb RAM).

I've been reading countless reviews and comments over the last few weeks having initially been all set to get the new Dell XPS 9570.

Someone on here brought the Aero to my attention with its vastly superior GPU and my first impressions of it are brilliant.

Will try keep this brief but happy to answer any questions anyone has!

The Keyboard & Trackpad are both great. The latest firmware updates resolve the keyboard chatter issue which I've seen mentioned on Reddit a lot. It's a really nice keyboard to type on and I think the customisable LED backlights are a nice touch.

The trackpad itself is still just using the latest ELAN drivers so I haven't even bothered to try install the windows precision drivers yet - and so far I don't think feel the need to.

I spent a while uninstalling any unnecessary bloatware but there wasn't to much to do and I consequently didn't bother with a clean installation of Windows. The Gigabyte Smart Update software makes it very easy to ensure all drivers are up to date.

I had originally planned to wait for the 4K screen having had a 4K Dell XPS 9560 for the last year, but I had no need to be worried because the 1080p/144Hz screen is pin sharp and I really notice the extra smoothness with the high refresh rate.

The main thing I haven't tried yet is playing any games but it's certainly editing through 4K footage with no problem whatsoever.

Here's hoping my experience continues to be positive!

    HP zbook studio g5

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 05:56 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Really interested in this machine. It seems to have the perfect blend of everything I need in a work laptop. I will be using it for Adobe products and 3D. Powerful CPU config options, an amazing display, and an ok GPU to start with. If I need something more powerful I think an external GPU will do the trick. My only concern is, this is a HP computer.

    https://youtu.be/wyjCtyu0VFI

The questions I have are as follows:

    What is HP's reputation?

    How is their support?

What is the quality of the build of their higher end machines?

I'm just not sure about the companies reputation and level of quality.
