How safe is it to install & use NodeJS tools from the NPM package manager? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:27 AM PDT I'm a big noob. I am already familiar with and have used in the past the python manager pip/pip3 and I love all these small helpful Commandline Python tools, e.g. youtube-DL, rtv and a thousand other great tools. Now I have come across a couple of programs that are NodeJS programs and can be installed through the NPM package manager. I was wondering how safe (malware) these packages are? I once read that with pypi and pip pretty much everyone could upload a package and if I would install the wrong one it could end bad. I still have never installed NodeJS or NPM on my machine but there are a few apps I would love to try. this whole nodeJS stuff still seems weird and more difficult too understand to me somehow. like I more or less understand how a python app works..from what I understand tools like ytdl are basically just python scripts, correct? because sometimes I just open one of these python programs with a text editor and look into the source code (have in mind that im not a.programmer at all but hey I over the last few years I managed.to use the terminal and bash/python scripts more or less :)) nodeJS is for running JavaScript?but thats not the Java that can run on pretty much all devices (including old phones from 15 years ago), right? regarding the NPM/pypi safety I also came across this incident: http://blog.npmjs.org/post/163723642530/crossenv-malware-on-the-npm-registry I souls really appreciate if someone could give me a noob friendly introduction (or link me to easy to understand blogposts) about NPM. thanks so much for any answers and support! Dell Inspiron 3180 - Zorin Lite 12.3 - Touchpad Not Responding Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:53 AM PDT Hello, I just started using Linux yesterday, and everything is going swimmingly except for the touchpad. After startup, the touchpad functions normally; however, after about 30 seconds, it becomes unresponsive and I can no longer click or move my cursor. I've found similar posts here and here, but they haven't been super helpful. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Want to run Linux as live USB for privacy Posted: 01 Apr 2018 02:02 PM PDT As per title, I would like to run Linux from a USB stick and create a secure isolated environment to work in. Am I correct in thinking that any distribution which runs from a computer RAM will leave no trace of previous activity? I dont have any experience in Linux and just need a simple, lightweight distribution which can be run from a USB stick and doesnt remember anything once its been unplugged. Any recommendations? I'm using Macbook OSX. I found a list here - any of these will be ok? [link] [comments] |

Resurrecting my 10 year old HP DV6516tx Laptop. Mousepad is troubling now. Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:24 AM PDT Hey everyone, Just installed the ubuntu desktop 17th version on my laptop, the HP DV6516tx, Just managed to install the GPU drivers, there are some artifacts on screen, not sure why but I'm totally clueless. I'm totally new to linux, want to try it out, learn & grow here. so, I'm trying to get my sypnatics mouse working properly. here's the current scenario: Mouse was working perfectly during install, even before installing the Display drivers, now, I'm not able to use it properly, here's what I'm able to do and I'm not able to do: Move the cursor, left & right click work only for closing an app. clicks doesn't work on main desktop, had to open the terminal using keyboard and I'm able to work like that. hovering my mouse over battery or audio or wifi, doesn't give me the popup. not able to shutdown/restart coz mouse not able to "click" on the power options. did the xinput list and was able to see the device mentioned in the list. not sure what to do after that. any help please. A couple questions regarding web development Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:01 AM PDT Okay, so I am doing some web dev on a instance of Debian and currently I am using python with Nginx, Flask, and uWSGI. From my understanding, the path that your project is in has to be accessible by the user Nginx is running under for it to be able to serve up responses to requests. I would prefer to keep my Project in my user's home directory, but I ended up having to make a copy of it in the /srv directory and change the ownership of all the files to www-data for both the user and group. My first question is:

Where to start with a home server for NextCloud and Plex? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:04 AM PDT Hi. I'm looking to get or build a home server for NextCloud (as a replacement for Google calendar/contacts/photos) and Plex (for streaming movies to my devices), possibly my own Matrix server too. I have a few questions as I have very limited knowledge about servers.
I'm trying to avoid unnecessary headaches, so if something seems marginally better but is way more troublesome to configure, I'd prefer to go with the easier non-optimal path as long as performance and security as still reasonably taken care of. [link] [comments] |
ubuntu i wanted to upgrade python, but i think i now broke my system Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:49 AM PDT i wanted to upgrade my python version to 3.6.
after seeing things flashing by like removing ubuntu-desktop i pressed ctrl-z, because i started to realize what i had done. i think ubuntu runs partly on python and i now removed that part, i am still running ubuntu, i have Visual studio code open with a commandline, but i think the default commandline is already removed, i think the best i can do now is backing up important files and reinstalling, any suggestions? edit 1: i have backed up all files i could think of edit 2: i tried a bunch of things from this as suggested by /u/unused_alias but i keep getting
after i typed any apt-get install command. with the exception of "sudo apt-get -f install" that resolves in
edit 3: someone suggested here to try "sudo lsof file" and then "sudo kill -9 PID" with pid being the pid of lsof. after i did that i can now run "sudo apt-get -f install" [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:27 AM PDT I installed Fedora Custom Operating System and was planning on using CDM as my display manager and i3 as window manager. However, when I do that, there seems to be a problem with dbus. When I want to start gnome-terminal in i3 after starting it with CDM, it does not work. The same in Openbox. If I install lightdm instead of CDM and start i3 or Openbox with it then gnome-terminal does start. Also, I am always able to start the gnome-terminal with My guess is that lightdm initialises something that CDM does not do. How can I make that CDM does that too? [link] [comments] |
Full lockup when streaming video Posted: 01 Apr 2018 10:48 AM PDT My current desktop is Delta Linux, which is an updated remaster of XenialDog that includes ubuntu-restricted-extras and libav, which is itself Ubuntu 16.04 based. All is good, except that when streaming media, either on Youtube via the Firefox, or mpv, both of which work fine, until after some time, sometimes ten minutes, sometimes hours in, my computer entirely freezes up, and needs to be reset; I cannot even switch to tty console, the mouse and keyboard are entirely unresponsive, and the Caps Lock light lights up. This occurs over different kernel versions, at least from 4.4.0-94 to 4.4.0-116; It does not seem to effect Kodi as much, as I can watch a half dozen episodes at 720p or less and it won't happen, though it does start to when I try 1080p. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite, 3GB RAM, i3 dual core. Everything else works fantastically, and until this problem occurs, even video playback is quite reasonable. [link] [comments] |
Help. Can't access my new hard drive Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:44 AM PDT Hi linux masters ;) I've purchased a new drive yesterday and unfortunatly I cannot copy any files to it. The OS detects the drive and I have formatted it to ext4. Here is how it looks like: The Commands I've tried (I've tried logging in as root as well): What am I missing here? :) Thank you for the help [link] [comments] |
Can't change my mouse sensitivity or screen brightness Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:44 AM PDT Hello, I am unable to find somewhere to adjust the screen brightness of my laptop. My Fn keys work for sound control, but not for screen brightness. Separately, my mouse sensitivity settings won't work. Any ideas? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Recommended version of Linux for noob? Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:49 AM PDT I want to try Linux on my laptop. I don't do a lot with this laptop - some surfing the web, downloading torrents, a little streaming, and a little word processing. Any recommendations? I was thinking about either Ubuntu or Mint ... any major differences to consider? Is either better for security and avoiding malware/viruses etc? [link] [comments] |
HELP Understanding lsusb output! Posted: 01 Apr 2018 09:14 AM PDT Hey there Im toty and Im new in this subreddit as with linux in general. Im messing around with a Pi3 but my main doubts are about lsubs output in general. Anyway, I'm studying to take the LPIC 1 and want to fully understand each line. As a newbie I had to read a lot to know what a bus, host controllers, host controller drivers etc are! In spite all this I still have a few questions I hope you guys could answer. So this is the output of lsusb without flags: So my Pi 3 has 4 external usb ports, 1 ethernet port and 1 hdmi port. For what I've learned so far I do see that my Pi has only 1 bus. Right now I've plugged in 4 devices So now some question arises: Now those questions are about lsusb output, let's check out lsusb -t output: correspond to the last two lines of previous output and I know that because of dev numbers also now with lsusb -t I can tell for what I've read that dev 1 is a root hub (an internal hub which has lots of usb ports) is an abstraction layer that governs the real ports. Am I right? Lots of questions. Very thanks in advanced!!! [link] [comments] |

SELinux blocking stuff but I don't see it in the logs Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:21 AM PDT Hey guys, I've been scratching my head over SELinux these past few hours. I've been using audit2allow, setsebool, semanage, aureport, ... to fix all the issues so far but now I'm stuck I'm running CentOS 7 and I'm trying to setup Pi-hole. I've been able to suppress all the "failed" events from the logs so far. I've reach a point now where I have an issue, I know is caused by selinux, because doing However, I can't seem to find any trace of the issue in the logs ( The issue is that the graphs on the web interface won't load when here are the only entries created in As you can see it says 'success' for all of them. Any idea where else in SELinux can I look for the issue? [link] [comments] |
Linux on Dell XPS 13 (9370) - Stable enough to rely on when trying to make a living? Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:14 PM PDT As the title says, I want to buy a Dell XPS 13 and use it with Linux to learn web dev (JA stack) and earn a living as a full stack JS developer (freelancing etc). Will Linux work well on the Dell XPS13? Or will I have bugs and updates that break something all of the time? I am leaning towards ElementaryOS because I am a Mac guy at the moment. Thanks! Looking for a distro for my needs - I want to switch permanently to Linux (and I will surely do it) Posted: 01 Apr 2018 05:38 AM PDT How much do you know about GNU/Linux? I have some knowledge about Linux (theoretically), but I'm a beginner. I'm following some awesome courses about Linux. *Do you prefer the Windows or MacOS design? (Or if you know what a Desktop Environment is, list your favourite) * I come from Windows, so I'd say Windows design. However, I'm open to any DE. For some odd reason, MacOS-design DEs make me think of bloat. Just my preferences. Is your hardware fairly old or obscure, or is it modern / common? (Ignore if you don't know) (Older / Modern / Top of the line) Modern. G4560 (Kaby Lake CPU), GTX 1050 Ti, 8GB DDR4, 120GB SSD and 1TB HDD. What will it be used for? (Daily Use, Server, Gaming, NAS, Workstation, etc..) (Daily Use / Server / Gaming / NAS / Workstation / Other) Daily Use, Programming and some Gaming (My Steam Library will have only Linux-compatible games. If a company doesn't want to make a game Linux-compatible, then it doesn't deserve my money. Easy, right?) Do you have any special requirements? (Special requirements) I prefer less-bloated distros. I care about my privacy, to some extent. I'm not crazy about customization. I want to avoid distro-hopping, so that's why I wrote this text post. I was thinking about Ubuntu LTS, but I had some problems with 16.04 (couldn't boot into it after the reboot needed after the installation, because I got an error about nouveau - the open-source Graphics driver, I know). 18.04 is in beta-testing and I don't know if I should go with it or wait until the final version gets released. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
