My laptop order has been stolen

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:25 PM PDT

    Hi,

I had placed an order for a Dell G7 unit which was supposed to reach me today. The order was being delivered by FedEx. I was at home and I decided to check my order status as it was supposed to come soon, and to my surprise, I saw that it had already been delivered. The delivery was signed by someone I had never heard of before. I live in an apartment, so I thought it was given to the front desk, but when I went down there, there was no sign of my package. I rechecked all my information, especially delivery address to see if I made a mistake, and it is indeed my address.

So, I'm guessing the delivery guy misplaced my order, basically gave it to some other address (it is an apartment and I hear this is more common in apartments) and the guys in that house either took it on purpose or don't know what it was and just took it.

I contacted Dell and they told me to file a police report ASAP and send an email to a specific account with the case number of the report. According to a chat agent, they will contact the police department to confirm the report, and in under 48 hours will get back to me. If approved, I would get either a refund, or be shipped a new unit, as per my choice. But I don't know how likely it is to be approved. Also as it's the weekend, I won't hear back until at least Tuesday.

Has this happened to anyone before? What did you do? What can I do?

    Thanks!!

I really like the surface pro but i just can't justify spending that kind of money. what other 2-in-1 options are out there? or is the pro really worth it?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:40 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I would prefer to spend no more than $800, preferably around $600. Purchasing in the United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I like the two in one style, and good battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I like something light and easy to carry

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No, just nothing too small like those mini computers

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I occassionally run Steam but very, very rarely. I don't do much gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I really, really prefer to have a numerical pad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Computer will mostly be used for school work and needs to be compatible with Snap and Microsoft Office.

Anyone used to have this laptop?

Is the Asus GL703GS-DS74 released yet?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:04 AM PDT

My girlfriend ordered this laptop from Newegg on the 24th because they listed the release date as the 26th. After contacting them though, they've been extremely vague about it. Giving basically just few word responses to any questions kind of giving the impression that their listing is wrong and they have no idea.

I've tried to find videos of the laptop in use on YouTube but none show up.

I just bought this laptop today from HID and I was wondering if anyone has the current model and would be willing to answer some questions? Once I get my model I'd be happy to make a review.

Help! How do you clone a NVME Drive?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:47 AM PDT

Been searching online for days to no avail. I have a laptop with a NVME ssd in a single slot. I want to upgrade to a larger/faster NVME drive. I want to keep my boot and recovery partitions. With a desktop with multiple internal slots it is easy. Just clone one to the other drive and swap. With one drive I can't seem to find any reasonable way to do this. I've tried cloning an external usb drive but I can't boot into windows from an external. An external usb adapter for nvme drive does not exist. Please help!

Why is The MX150 ranked so high by passmark?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:27 AM PDT

The MX150 is just below the GTX 960M on videocardbenchmark.net. What gives? It should be much further down the list, correct?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:20 AM PDT

I've just bought a new laptop with a Intel Celeron N3350 1.1Ghz CPU, 4 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM memory and a SSD drive. Going to use it for office work and browsing only. Could you help me choose an OS that will provide me smoothest experience? Right now thinking between Win7 Ultimate x64 and Linux Mint.

Installed HHD doesn't quite fit right? Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:20 AM PDT

I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series with just an installed M.2 SSD and an open slot for an HHD figuring I could buy a 2.5'' HHD and install it myself. After buying https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B4QESVQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and then getting some screws to mount the drive, I notice that once installed, the back plate doesn't quite sit flush anymore when putting it back on. I tried installing it both with sticker side up and down, and it didn't seem to make a difference except the connector needing to twist if I were to install it sticker side up. The Hard Drive works fine, but should I be worried about the 1 mm extension of the back plate in the corner where the HDD is since it can't sit flush like the rest of the back plate does?

    Lenovo Ideapad 720S Tech Specifications

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:55 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

    I've been looking at the Lenovo Ideapad 720S 14'' (16GB RAM, MX-150) as a new laptop. https://www3.lenovo.com/ae/en/laptops/ideapad/700-series/Ideapad-720S-14/p/88IP70S0833

Hwever, the website i'm looking at states that the I7-7500U is paired with the MX150, but i've looked at countless Lenovo websites; all of them state that it's only the 940MX with the 7500U, or the 8550U with the MX-150. There's numerous listings that state that the I7-7500U is paired with the MX150, I just don't know if these listings are indeed, legitimate.

    -

    Here's one - https://www.noon.com/en-ae/ideapad-720s-with-14-inch-display-core-i7-processor-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-2gb-nvidia-geforce-gt-mx150-graphic-card-silver/N13133972A/p/

Incorrect listing, or does it actually exist? Any Ideapad owners that have the exact specifications stated above? ^

    Thanks in advance :)

How to Disassemble any Laptop in Under 20 minutes

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:44 PM PDT

Too many laptops to choose. What do I pick?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:58 PM PDT

I've been doing research on laptops and there are so many configurations its impossible to choose.

I need a laptop capable of editing 4k video so 16gb of ram, a decent processor and performance of at least a 1050ti is a must.

My preference in a laptop is a lightweight, okayish battery and a solid monitor.

What are some options at different price tiers for me?

Suggest a laptop for a tech enthusiast and a photographer

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:51 PM PDT

To start off, I am a bit of a tech enthusiast (maybe from my engineering background) and a photographer. I primarily use my desktop at home to do photo editing, and it already has everything I need except for mobility. I have big plans for my laptop and am buying one to let me work in the library, elsewhere in my house, etc. If I am 100% honest, I don't play much computer games, but the odd game will interest me enough to check it out, so a GPU is nice to have, but maybe not a must. I envision myself viewing photos and editing some photos on the laptop, doing research on the web, and maybe get involved in some machine learning. The biggest kicker, however, is the selection of laptops available today is quite confusing for me to decide on. We have 15W ultra low voltage CPUs that are quite fast and good on battery life, and we have 45W normal CPUs with 6 cores too, which of course require more juice. But, honestly, both types of CPUs often seem to have thermal throttling within their respective laptop chassis (so what are we really buying?).

We also have these new coffee lake CPUs at a time when the latest Nvidia GPUs are just around the corner, but not out yet. (I checked out the Max-Q GPUs like a GTX-1070, which are supposed to be the best for battery life and performance, but the price seems expensive for just a modest 20-30% increase in performance over the next lower tier non Max-Q GPU.)

What should I buy? Budget is not the biggest concern, but I would love to spend my money in a smart way. For now, I have been using a $600 Acer Swift 3 temporarily, which I actually have no huge complaints about (it has a 256gb ssd and i5-8250u), but the ram is soldered and at 8gb, the color gamut on the screen is poor, and there are no thunderbolt connections. Yet, at the same time, it performs very well within its price. I mean, I can use it like an appliance until it breaks and buy another one, and still come out cheaper than buying a premium laptop for $2K+, but maybe that's not the smart thing to do.

I have been looking at a MSI GS65 but read about the thermal throttling issues. On the other end of the spectrum, the Lenovo X1 Carbon interests me too because of its HDR display and excellent keyboard and versatility, but honestly it's pretty expensive for a laptop with those specs.

    What are your thoughts?

why are there such huge price gaps between tiers of gpu

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 02:08 PM PDT

Ive noticed that a GTX 1080 laptop can be much more expensive than a GTX 1070 laptop of the same model.

Eg. Amazon GTX 1080 zephyrus is usd2699, same model but GTX 1070 is usd1966. Thats a usd700 price difference.

A gtx 1080 graphid card on amazon is about usd700, while a gtx 1070 is about usd550. So shouldnt gtx 1080 laptops have maybe around usd150 difference from a gtx 1070? Since they are using desktop chips anyway.

A couple keys on my keyboard are starting to resist the pressdown a bit, is there any way to fix that? This is my laptop keyboard, standard non-mechanical keys. I have used mechanical keys and actually prefer standard.

How come some Dell Latitude E5430's have the upper mouse buttons, and some don't?
