Intel 7th vs 8th gen CPU?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 08:18 AM PDT

Hey everyone. I'm considering a new laptop purchase, and I'm torn between going with one of the latest models, featuring the quad-core 8th gen Intel i7, or saving a few hundred bucks by going with the old 7th gen i7 from last year's models.

I know the performance leap this generation is huge, but from the user's perspective, how noticeable is it going to be? I want a machine that's fast for day-to-day tasks primarily, particularly with a lot of multi-tasking going on. I occasionally do some graphic work, work with large data files (Excel sheets and Access databases with hundreds of thousands of records), a little bit of gaming but mostly games that are a few years old and at modest settings. No video editing or hardcore gaming though.

My current machine is a desktop with a 4th gen desktop i7, so that's the experience I'm coming from.

Would it be worth it for me to pay up for the newer processor? Or would I barely notice the difference with what I'm using it for? Any advice would be much appreciated!

    HP Spectre Help

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:12 AM PDT

Hey I was just wondering if any computer guru could edit the HP spectre on the HP site to make it capable of gaming (i.e. games like Fortnite, Total War, Arma 3, GTA V if its possible). My budget is $1650-1700, and I'm a student if that helps at all. I'm not lazy I just have no clue on whats 'good enough' even though Ive been trying to learn on YouTube for 3-4 hours now. Also, if there is something that competes with it (say the Surface Book 2 is the same specs and $) can you comment it below. Thanks!!!

    Heating while charging

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:01 PM PDT

When playing games on battery power, the performance of my laptop obviously isn't as good, however the laptop runs at about 60 degrees Celsius. When charging, in jumps to the high 70s, so i was wondering if there's any way that I can change some settings to keep it cooler, even if I have to sacrifice some performance.

    Gigabyte Aero 15 Refresh: 144hz or 4k?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:37 PM PDT

So we are going to learn a lot about the new Aero in a couple days, but through the initial announcement and YouTube comments we already know a lot about the screen: Both options are color calibrated IPS matte displays, one is 1080p @ 144hz and one is 4K @ 60hz

For an equal mix of content creation and gaming, which screen would you recommend, assuming they're both quality? Disregarding battery life and cost.

Is it worth to upgrade from XPS 13 (2018, 4k, 16GB ram i7 8th gen.) to the new incoming XPSs?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:27 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

Among those has more infos about the new XPS, do you think it is worth an upgrade from XPS 13 (2018, 4k, 16GB ram i7 8th gen.)?

Do you think that there are better products with similar features (good display, good-ish battery life, good-ish performance) everything in a small a working "package"?

My main activities with such device are movies and productivity.

Ps: I am on time to send it back Amazon.

    HP ENVY 13 (2017/18) MX150 Questions

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 11:23 AM PDT

Hi! I'm thinking about purchasing the HP ENVY 13. The one in the stores in my country offer the 8th gen i5/i7, both with 8GB RAM, packed with the MX150. The only difference between the i5 & i7 versions is that the i5 comes with 256GB SSD & the i7 comes with 360GB SSD. The price difference here is around $200 & my parents are not open the to the idea of committing to an online purchase :(

Anyways I'd like to ask if the $200 difference is worth picking the i7 with more storage over the i5?

More importantly, for those who are currently on the Envy, how is yours holding up in terms of battery life & performance?

If it helps, the only game I play nowadays is Dota 2. I'm a college student pursuing a degree in business with a specialized track in Information Technology.

Looking for a new Laptop, not sure about a few details

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 06:32 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1500 EUR, Europe

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not looking for something impossible, but Id prefer not to exceed 1.9 kg

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Id prefer 13-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing and casual gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I usually play smaller or indie games, which are usually not that resource intensive, but Id like to have the freedom of trying a bit more demanding games, obviously nothing like Far Cry at max settings. Id like it if the thing didnt turn into an oven while playing. FPS Id aim for would be 30 at least. Settings can be set to lowest

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Thunderbolt seems like a really good plus to have, 16 gb RAM definitely, i7 as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I prefer to leave the country thing somewhat vague for privacy reasons, but Im sure most of you can figure out where Im at. Anyways Ive already done some research and Ive come across a few options. The one that seems to fit the most is a Lenovo Thinkpad 720s with 16gb RAM and a Geforce GTX 1050 Ti. By specs alone this thing seems like a dream, yet Ive read here and there and some users have had throttling issues. Whats the use of good specs if they're gonna be capped while doing basic tasks?

So in other words, have you heard anything about that Lenovo which could be a deal breaker and do you know of other similar options? Thunderbolt isnt essential, but like I said a really nice addition. Basically Im looking for something powerful that doesnt overheat easily.

Edit: Forgot to mention. I know there are some upcoming refresh versions for a bunch of laptops, but Im not really looking to buy any of them for a couple of reasons. First of all, new launch versions of these laptops (and many other devices, really) are riddled with bugs, hardware issues and a bunch of other stuff that Im not willing to put up with right now. Secondly, price is usually higher than what I can afford so yeah, lets leave em out of the discussion please.

    Why I'm buying a used/upgraded Lenovo ThinkPad T430s ($250 CAD on Kijiji, Canada's version of Craigslist) vs. the bleeding-edge Dell XPS 15 2 in 1 (~$2500)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:18 PM PDT

What I currently have for computing: the Surface Pro 1 (3rd gen i5 + 10.6" FHD + 4gb RAM + 128gb SSD + 128gb microSD + Wacom EMR Digitizer + Touch screen + 4th gen Type cover; purchased for $1299+tax CAD in March 2013 + $129 CAD 4th gen typecover when my gen 1 typecover died)

What this pre-upgraded Lenovo ThinkPad T430s offers that my Surface lacks: same 3rd gen i5 + bigger 14" screen, albeit HD+ or 1600x900 + phenomenal keyboard experience versus typecover + 8gb RAM (upgradeable to 16gb) + 128 SSD (upgradable to ???) + Ethernet port + one always on USB 2.0 to charge my Jaybird Run wireless earbuds or my Kindle Paperwhite. And I can always use the Cloud to sync my most important documents between both devices. It also has the potential to upgrade the processor to an i7, which is practically unheard of in laptops!

It does however have some minor cosmetic issues (chip on the outer corner of the left wrist pad, one of the rubber feet is missing) but I'm more than confident that I can simply MacGyver something to rectify those minor faults (I suspect they are part of the reason why it's so cheap at $250, as I has seen similarly or worse specced T430s's going for >$300 CAD).

Basically an extra device specialized for productivity while my Surface Pro 1 (with the smaller/nicer/portable FHD screen) gets relegated to being a media-consumption-first device.

Benefits? If I find I am needing more RAM/SSD I can upgrade the Thinkpad within reason.

If I find I need a computer with a better processor (for more intensive programming tasks let's say) I'm only out $250, which I'm actually subsidizing anyway by selling my old Wii U for ~$250.

The Surface Pro 2 (with a 4th gen Intel processor and a much better battery life) can probably be had for about $400 CAD on eBay or Kijiji for those who are also looking for a similar set of devices to fulfill their needs.

Obviously the Dell XPS 15 2 in 1 is on a completely different level in terms of meeting today's modern computing tasks with no compromises...But this way I'm no longer faced with rendering my Surface Pro 1 obsolete, rather it's going to be used in tandem with my newly acquired used ThinkPad T430s.

I attribute my month long endeavour checking out r/thinkpad among other laptop subreddits for influencing this decision, as well as various Thinkpad enthusiast YouTube channels, and this video in particular sold it for me Lenovo T430s - best value used ThinkPad?

TL;DR: Why spend $2500+ CAD when I can spend $250 instead and still meet my needs for one tenth of the cost? Think hard about what you are really needing for your computing needs and how you might save money.

And for what's it's worth, the 8th gen Intel chips have been touted as being 2 times faster than the chips from 5 years ago (a.k.a. 3rd gen), so as long as I can live with that I'm content with the money I will be saving.

Dell XPS 9575 or HP Spectre x360 or something else...

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:00 PM PDT

I'm deciding between new 2018 Dell XPS 2 in 1 9575 and the new 2018 Spectre x360 15 with the same CPU-GPU specs:

    · 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8705G Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.1 GHz)

    · Radeon™ RX Vega M GL Graphics with 4GB HMB2 Graphics Memory

(for videoediting in Sony Vegas (4K 1080p 120-60fps video files and work with Photoshop)

    What's important for me:

    1. No PWM at all ( all brightness levels)

    2. Second internal slot for extra M.2 SSD

    3. No coil whines

    4. SD (microSD) card slot

    5. Quiet fan

    6. 4K or QHD+ resolution

    7. Upgradeable RAM (or 32GB already installed)

    8. Light and thin

    9. Black matte finish

    10. USB Type C Thunderbolt 3

Which laptop is perfectly suited for my work

    Thinkpad E480 or Envy 13T?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:39 AM PDT

I know these aren't in the same class but I am getting the Thinkpad for $1286 and the Envy is $2000 but my friend is getting me a quote for commercial pricing. Specs of the Thinkpad 256gb SSD, i5 8250u, 8gb, RX550 2GB while the Envy i7 8550u, 16gb ram, 256gb MX150 2 GB. I am so lost. I just don't know if the E480 is a good deal or not.

    Portugal, 1000-1500€, looking for suggestions

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 04:09 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I will be buying in Portugal and budget is up to 1000€ or 1500€ maximum.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is not desired, good battery life is an important point. Since the price range I am aiming for is more high end, bang for buck is not that much a problem but being able to spend less is always better.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Portability is also important, but can be slightly sacrificed for better specs if need be. The main factor is it being light, size is not as big a concern. I would like it to be under 3kg, preferrably 1.5 - 2kg.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I normally work in Linux (mostly Ubuntu so support is supposedly better, but it is very important that the laptop works well with Linux) with some possibility for very ocasional work in windows (with non cross-platform programs).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The main use for the computer will be programming, since I am currently a computer engineering student. No gaming will be done, unless it is very light gaming that any computer can handle, nor any sort of video editing or CAD work. Some light photo editing might be done but it is not a concern since it will not be very frequent nor be very heavy. In terms of programs, mostly IDEs and browsers, text editors. Maybe sometimes virtual machines but that will be very rare and not much resource intensive.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be a very nice extra, since I will be typing there a lot. It is more useful to me to have USB A ports than USB C ones, at least for now (I wouldn't want to be living in #donglelife). Touch screen, finger print reader, optical drive, etc are not at all necessary. Good build quality would be nice in terms of having good durability, since I am planning in keeping the computer for as long as I can and at least until I finish my degree.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have investigated beforehand, mostly looking at ultrabooks in this price range in a local computer website, so I will leave them here in case this helps, but I don't really know how to pick between them. I have found the following options:

Thank you for any and all help you can provide! :) If you need to look up prices in portugal you can use this store website, or this store aggregator website.

HP ENVY 13 (2018) or MacBook Pro 13 (2017) for Web Development

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:27 AM PDT

Hi guys, currently I'm torn between two units right now. On getting the Macbook 13 (2017) or the recently refreshed 8th gen HP Envy. I am a software engineer that purely focuses most on web programming in PHP, Js, and C# with a light touch of gaming on the run. I also splice PSD files with Photoshop and Adobe illustrator occasionally. I haven't tried a MAC in my entire life but I do have a friend who is selling me his brand new Macbook Pro with 1/4 of the price slash since he won it in a raffle. That makes it equal in price with the HP Envy.

I am aware of the specifications. And the only thing that pulling me to the Macbook Pro is the resolution of the screen that is 2k and the build quality. In terms of processor and Graphics cards the Envy is way more faster with quad core and an MX150.

What do you guys suggest? Should I Go and try out with a Mac? I am not quite familiar if a dual core processor with a MACbook is future proofing ; like I am going to use it for 3 to 4 years. Is the dual core sufficient enough in thre long years to come? Thanks

Switch from XPS15 9560 to MacBook Pro 13”?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:21 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I've had an XPS15 9560 (4K touch, 16gb ram, and gtx1050) for just under a year now. At first, I loved it, but recently it's proved to be quite unreliable...

I am almost constantly running out of memory, blue screening, or dealing with crashing programs. I spend a lot of time in photoshop, premiere pro, and after effects, as well as like to have at least a million chrome tabs open while researching. I did a clean wipe of the hard drive a couple of months ago, and the problems haven't gone away— I'm starting to think that maybe windows isn't for me.

I figure that I can sell my XPS15 for about 2500$ CAD, and get a top of the line 13" MacBook Pro. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Will the lower specs frustrate me?

It seems counterintuitive to 'upgrade' to a laptop with lower specifications, but I'm hoping that the better resource management will account for that.

I'm an iPhone user so the ecosystem change will also be nice.

Thanks for the help! (Also posted in r/suggestalaptop)

    Asus Strix Rog Laptop Cooling

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:04 PM PDT

Recently bought an ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS-AH73. When I researched into it I saw many people talking about the head issues of the machine. Did not realize that it was soo true. With running a cooling pad, a 120mv undervolt on the CPU and a frequency/mv curve on the GPU I am still getting high temps with gaming. EG: doing 1 round of Vermintide 2 (about 20-30 min of gameplay) I saw the CPU go up to a max temp of 86C and the GPU hit 81C. That still seems very hot even with a generous undervolt. Does anyone else with this model have similar results?
