Does anyone know Costco's laptop release cycle?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 08:27 AM PDT

I'm a bit gun shy of buying a new laptop from most of the popular retailers given restocking fees and short return windows. Costco stands out, in addition to being good about both of those factors, in giving additional warranty to customers. I noticed they have an MSI laptop (GF72) in stock. Now I know they don't even have the GS63, but I am wondering if there's a time by which I would be certain they wouldn't stock the GS65. I won't need a laptop until August when I start grad school so I can wait a bit to see.

    Aero 15X : DEAD, RAM

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 10:54 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I ordered new RAM for my laptop, G.Skill Ripjaws 2400Mhz. Unfortunately I am unable to boot with them installed.

The laptop came with G.Skill Ripjaws 2666Mhz but 2400 should work with no issues AFAIK.

    What I tried:

    • Boots with the original stick in either of the 2 slots

    • When I add the new one in either of the slots I only get a blank screen, no beeps, error code, nothing on the screen.

    • I also tried only with the new stick and same result, nothing.

    • When I put the original back I can boot again.

My conclusion is that the RAM is faulty. Do you agree?

Is there anything else that I can do from my side to make sure the ram is indeed faulty?

    Thanks!

Aero 15xv8 - RealTek sound driver

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:14 PM PDT

    Hello r/laptops,

I have a problem with the new Aero 15x.

My Laptop didnt recognized the Audi-Jack so I searched online for a fix. After I did what was told me the Laptop found my headphones without a problem. The Problem is, that no Speaker nor Headphone wont play a sound.

If I try to test them the only thing that pops up is an eror message.

I tried to deinstall the RealTek Audio Manager via Device Manager but even after the restart I have the same problem.

I tried to undo my steps but that wont help as well.

Im really frustrated so far and I dont know what else I can do.

If someone could help me I would be pretty gratefull.

    Thanks in advance.

acer nitro 5, Hp omen 15-ce00la, lenovo legion y520

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 01:10 PM PDT

Im looking for an entry level gaming laptop, so far those are my 3 choices, all 3 have an i5 7300hq and a envidia 1050 4gb (except the lenovo that comes with a 1050 with 2 gigs), the omen seems to be the better choice but its a lot more expensive in my country, I have read that the nitro 5 overheats, and the 2gb vram gpu from the lenovo worries me, any of you have those machines that can give me a little feedback and help me decide?, keep in mind that playing at mid to high settings at 1080p with 30 fps is good enough for me.

    Occasional ticking noise

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:41 PM PDT

Around 1-5 times throughout the day, I hear a sort of ticking noise from my laptop. I read online that hard drive clicking is a sign of hard drive failure, but I've seen no noticeable difference in quality or speed before and during the ticking noises, so I don't believe that it's failing.

Honestly I think that it's just noise from my desk, and I'm being paranoid ever since I read about the hard drive clicking online, but if it's not, then what could be the cause of this?

I'm not sure of my laptop model, or where the hard drive actually is in it, but I know it's an HP, and that the ticking noise comes from just right of the touchpad.

A much better alternative (than Aero 15 and MSI GS65) for thin and light gaming laptop

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 03:38 AM PDT

Looks like Clevo is giving MSI and Gigabyte some serious competition. Scan Computers in the UK will be selling new thin and light gaming laptop based on 8th gen Intel CPU. The image looks incredible. It cost only a fraction of Aero 15 or MSI 65. What do you guys think?

    https://www.scan.co.uk/3xs/configurator/lg15-vengeance-pro

Edit: Looks like Scan knows we are discussing about the laptop, they updated the webpage just a few minutes ago. Some key feature: only 20mm thin (0.78 in), small size (same size as most 14'' laptop), battery is small (probably less than 50WH).

    Aero 15x v8 - Double keystroke problem

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:02 PM PDT

Just got mine today and thankfully there's no backlight bleeding. But, I have the double keystroke problem. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Also, is this a software or hardware problem? Should I consider returning this unit?

HP Envy 13, i7-8550U, MX150 - How is it? Does it have coil whine? Keyboard? Throttling?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 05:32 AM PDT

I'm currently between the HP Envy and the following laptops:

    Dell XPS 13 9360
A lot of people seem to have problems with coil whine, which is something I absolutely can't stand. A lot of people are reporting about random crashes and bluescreens. Also, no dedicated GPU.

    Asus Zenbook 13 ux331un
Pretty much very single review states that the keyboard is absolute shit. Instant deal-breaker for me. Also, throttling. Aside from that it seems alright?

    Microsoft Surface Book 2, 13.5"
I like it but the version I can afford has a gen7 i5 and no dedicated GPU. Not sure if that's future proof enough? Also, pretty bulky compared to the other options.

Does anybody know how the HP Envy 13 compares?

    i7-7700HQ GTX 1050 Ti 4GB vs. I5-7300HQ GTX 1060 6GB [Which to buy]

Anyone have experience with the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 10:38 AM PDT

Really thinking of replacing my (discontinued) 12.5" Razer Blade Stealth with a better ultrabook, most likely an XPS from Dell. Was really interested in the XPS 13 2 in 1, but IDK if it will be refreshed for 2018. If it will be, then that's the laptop for me. The 15 inch version was already released this year and looks really fucking spot-on; 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, new 8th gen i5 G-series with AMD graphics Vega Mega crossover hybrid chip, fingerprint reader and Windows Hello, best build quality and 2 in 1 form factor with near bezel less color accurate display??? And comes with USB-C charging that I can use with my SGS8+, and 75 WHr battery??

Bro, that's killer. And for only $1500, which is exactly within my budget. So if anyone has experience with the 15 inch, or knows if the 13 inch will be refreshed and bumped up to 2018 specs, please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Thoughts on the 8th gen Aero 15X - Backlight bleed and gaming

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 04:17 PM PDT

I opened up my new 2018 Aero 15x with the 144hz IPS display and GTX 1070 Max-Q about two hours ago and have some troubling thoughts after my short time with the machine.

As detailed in another post, I have had significant issues updating to the latest Geforce drivers. I think this will hopefully be solvable by spending time with Gigabyte tech support, but for now I am seeing absolutely terrible performance in games. Running Destiny 2 at 1080p (100% resolution, medium settings) with VSYNC off gave ~65 FPS with huge drops to the teens every twenty seconds or so. In essence, it was unplayable. For comparison, I owned the MSI GS63VR with 1070 Max-Q for quite a while and would average 110 fps with the same settings on Destiny 2.

For backlight bleed, I am extremely disapointed. It is bad enough for me to want a return honestly. I will forgive slight backlight bleed on the edge, but a good 20% off the screen on the bottom-right (and all corners honestly) shows an extremely distracting amount of bleed.

I will test some other games and try to update the drivers, but so far I am frustrated on my $2300 purchase.

XPS 13 (9370) running HOT - will a docking station hooked to a 1440p UltraWide cause extra heating? i7-8550u

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 08:33 AM PDT

I don't know what to expect from laptop use, but when I installed HWMonitor before my noisy fans kicked on I saw high 90c, almost 100. When the fans activate, it'll keep it down to a manageable low 50c.

I'm wondering if having my laptop connected to a docking station and 1440p ultra wide 34" monitor will cause this extra heating, or if I should look into getting a replacement.

    Aero 15X v8: Light-Bleed & Screen Issues

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 10:29 PM PDT

    Image with artifacts: https://imgur.com/a/VGTIRVx

    Image without artifacts: https://imgur.com/a/KHeG7

    Description of Situation:

In the photo I am opening a plain black image in full screen mode, and then taking a picture to demonstrate the light-bleed. I immediately noticed that my naked eye is able to discern a red pattern on the screen itself that is persistent, but every 5 seconds the screen will go true black (light-bleed still present) without the red pattern on the screen.

I also have a dead RGB on my shift key. This is beyond frustrating. I'm currently traveling, but when I return I will definitely be RMA'ing this laptop.

I posted earlier about not being able to update my Nvidia drivers, and I also wanted to note that my gaming performance is well below what benchmarks have placed it.

$500 (AUD) for the new Aero 15W worth it?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 10:47 PM PDT

    I currently have two options:

    Aero 15W (i7-7700HQ + GTX 1060 + 60 Hz) = $2,400 AUD

    Aero 15W v8 (i7-8750H + GTX 1060 + 144 Hz) = $2,900 AUD

I mainly plan on using it for school, gaming (not sure if the GTX 1060 will make the most out of 144 Hz in games like BF1 and PUBG) and some light photo and video editing. I'd just like to hear your opinions on whether the extra $500 is worth it, though I'm mainly curious to see if the newer one has better temperatures and no more keyboard issues.
