    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $400, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications to your requirements for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

This current one has a good integrated GPU, I mean it's just an office laptop on steroids so I'm looking for something similar, this has an oldie Radeon HD 8690M, I like playing games

    • How important is weight to you?

I doubt any laptop is heavier than this one so no.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Linux, Mac.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

at least 14 inches, which is what this Dell has

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If you have no requirements, put N/A.

    Gaming and revit.

    • If you're gaming (leave blank if you put N/A above...), do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Fortnite at least, this E6440 that I wanted to sell some time ago but couldn't (REFERENCE ) can play it on low 50-60 fps so at least a little better than that would be fine by me

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable business grade build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    NONE

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Maybe one that has a good software in it because I find it such bs that the windows liscence in every laptop is one time use and cannot format the thing back to factory settings.

I was recommended Acer - Aspire E 15 but not sure if I can find it in a retail store here, reason why it must be in a store is I have no time left to wait days for a package

Help with an everyday reliable laptop please!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 02:01 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: From the UK, but brother currently in US and can snag me a good deal. $1500 budget.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly. Will mainly be using it at home so not a dealbreaker.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac. Previously owned a Mac for 8+ years.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, reliable build quality (especially since international warranty probably won't be there), ideally 512GB SSD, nice looking.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Fairly high budget for an everyday laptop but I want something reliable and frankly, something fun to use.

Have been looking at the Razer Blade Stealth, Dell XPS 13 9360, HP Spectre X360 and a he Macbook Pro 13. When I think I have one decided, I read reviews about poor QC and over-heating etc.

Given that I'm in the UK, I need something that will be reliable from day 1.

    Thanks

    Laptop Suggestion For CS Major

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 04:07 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1650 dollars, U. S. A.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, probably around 1.8-2kg.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Linux should be fine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I am going to college this year and will be majoring in CS. So, need to run all the softwares necessary for CS major.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I won't be gaming constantly but would like to play games like Witcher 3,ac origins, rotr at atleast medium settings with 30 fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Need good build quality that can last me for atleast 3-5 years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Feel free to even suggest laptops that haven't released yet but will release by August.

Dell Inspiron 15 7577 vs Acer Predator Helios 300 vs Lenovo Legion Y720 [USA]

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 03:32 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1k-$1.2k (financing) or cheaper if you think I don't need to spend this much for what I'm using. I'd also like to have this as long as possible. Build quality & longevity of the laptop would be important.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs. Is it terrible to always have to charge the laptop multiple times per day?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 - 18 I suppose

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly Old School RuneScape, CS:GO, & PUBG.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? OSRS maxes out at 50FPS, I'd like that at all times. I don't care for graphical settings, so I'd like to run CS:GO & PUBG with high FPS without the laptop getting too hot or sounding loud.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, reliable build quality, no touch displays, finger-print is cool but not needed.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It does not have to be one of the three mentioned above, these are just what seems to be the best for the $1k price range from the research I've gathered. I'd like to have the laptop as long as possible.

    Dell XPS 15: 2017 or 2018?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:38 PM PDT

    Basic info for each laptop: 2017- i7-7700HQ, GeForce 1050 w/ 4GB dedicated RAM, 16GB RAM, 512gb PCle SSD, FHD Screen non-touch, $1400 2018 - i7-8750H, GeForce 1050Ti w/ 4GB, everything else the same, $1750

-Budget, no more than $1750. I can go beyond that, but it'd have to be an incredibly perfect laptop. -Country: US

-No 2 in 1, and I would good battery life (for I am in college)

-Weight, important factor: no more than 4 pounds.

-OS, windows and maybe an added on linux

-Uses: I would like the capability to do video editing on this. Nothing terribly fancy, though, I probably won't shoot anything above 1080p. Any video I would make would probably have a lot of added in 2D graphics and pre-installed effects -- just the stuff you can do in Premiere pro. I dont think I would touch after effects. And I would probably mainly use premiere pro. I also hope to do some light gaming with it.

Games I would play would be esport stuff like Rocket League, and the occasional AAA game or huge RPG like GTA V. I don't care too much about fps, as long as its above whatever the standard is (which I think is 60? I could probably do 30, though).

So basically I am trying to find a laptop that will serve me well for the next 4-6 years. I am a computer science major in my second year of college. I have been looking around for laptops A LOT recently. What I am looking for is something that can do video editing and can do a decent bit of gaming, but also isn't terribly expensive, doesn't have a shitty screen, and has a long battery life. After looking around I pretty much decided the XPS 15 would be the best for me. (Although if you have any outside recommendations I would consider them.)

I was pretty set on the XPS 2017, especially at the price it's at right now, then I discovered the new XPS for 2018. Should I get that instead?

I'm basically mainly concerned with the 1050 (2017) vs. the 1050Ti (2018). (Both models have 4gb of dedicated RAM, btw). Gaming is not my priority for this laptop, but I definitely want to be able to do at least some gaming with it. If I had to run a AAA game at a lower setting, that'd be fine with me. I don't care about squeezing out every possible FPS and pixel. But I still want a decent experience. Overall, gaming is not my priority, but I want to be able to do some of it if I'm getting a laptop this expensive.

I am not worried about the 7th gen vs. the 8th gen intel processor. The 7th gen is absolutely perfect for what I need.

So my primary question is: is the extra $350 worth getting the 1050Ti and added benefits of the 8th gen? I know the Ti is only marginally better, but as I understand it it sounds like the baseline specs for most big games today lies somewhere between the 1050 and the 1050Ti, if that makes sense. Although the Ti is only slightly better, it's in a different region of gaming, it seems. Perhaps I am wrong about this.

I hope this laptop lasts me a while as well. So the longevity of the 1050Ti vs. the 1050 is also a factor.

Please let me know if you need any additional info!! Thanks.

Need a laptop for Gaming, Graphic Design and Video Editing

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 09:20 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1500 USD, purchasing in china, Some stuff a little more expensive, hence the 1500 mark

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Just care about the looks, my games arent too intensive, but it cant look aggressive or "Gamery" looking, absolutely hate the red spikes and edges on all these MSI stuff, looks horrible.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight not important at all, just below 7KG including the power brick, due to plain restrictions, but mostly laptops are under that, a thin one would be nice, as thick ones give that "gamery" vibe which i hate

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, We run mac at school so would be great if i can get both, but i understand that apple is a dick when it comes to OS. I have a macbook air 2014 hardrive from my broken macbook which i can use for a mac OS setup, but im not even sure if that will work, help on that would be appreciated

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Just minimum 15 inches, hopefully 120+hz

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I run a lot of adobe stuff, adobe premier pro, i edit ads and videos in 4k and 2k footage as a money source, i dont mind buffer lag when watching footage back, just not too much. I run InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator at the same time, around 3-4 hours a day, needs to run those without lag, and I game a bit, CS:GO, GTA V, Fortnite and maybe a little bit of Overwatch, not very intensive games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 1080p 144fps, or whatever the screen hz supports. Medium settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Only thing is that it NEEDS good build quality, im moving it constantly

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. nothing. thanks for the help everyone, means a lot

Work + Portable Gaming Laptop Suggestion for US

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 12:40 AM PDT

I'm looking for a decent thin and light work laptop that can give me 10+ hrs of battery life with enough gaming performance to play most games at 1080p medium to high. Looking for good build quality. Budget is up to $1600-1700.

Not looking for a 2-in-1, though I don't mind if one meets my requirements. Definitely not looking for a 4K screen.

The new XPS 15 with a 1050 Ti looks great, but the webcam is putting me off since I'll be using it for work video calls. Also, the 97whr battery is only available with 4K display, which I do not want.

    Anyone have any other suggestions?

He used a thick dell laptop, it's too old where it had the rubber thing in the middle of the keyboard. It died, and the company took it to discard data, so I don't know the model. He MUST have a workstation laptop that utilizes a docking thing. Such as a Surface Book 2 w/ Surface Dock. He's mid 50's, and W10 is new, is this relevant? Yes because he's not a tech person. So don't try to find fancy things like fingerprint or something techy. He will 70% won't use it or struggle to learn and use it often. He is in a company that builds turbines, so Mastercam is his main program. He needs a laptop that follows the program's requirements + not take 10 minutes to boot/load. Seriously, his old laptop took 10 minutes to load and 10 minutes to load a project in mastercam. bigger screen is nice so he won't be squinting at the screen.

Mom needs a laptop with basic functions

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 10:59 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: CANADA - budget is maximum $700 but her last laptop was around $550 which she would prefer

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? doesn't really matter, 2 in 1 form factor would be cool, but not a priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? her last laptop was fairly small at 11.6" so take that as you will

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. somewhere around 11.6 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. literally just netflix, facebook, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touch screen is mandatory, hence why a 2in1 might be cool

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. She watches a lot of netflix, travels with her laptop a lot, brings it to work, on vacation, etc. doesn't need much space, ideally it would have a 128GB SSD or something around there, or the ability for me to add one later. Price is negotiable, though she would be most comfortable at around $550, but she will take my advice and get something more expensive up to about $700.

Asus Gaming GL702ZC AMD Ryzen 5 1600 for my old PC

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:00 PM PDT

So, I'm trying to do something, I'll be moving out soon to go to university and I cannot bring my PC with me, so I need a decent laptop that can actually run some good games. It's kinda complicated but is it worth selling my old PC for a laptop like this?

My PC has: i5 6600 3.3 GHz, 16 GB 2133MHz, GTX 1060 STRIX, WD HDD 1TB 7200 rpm, SSD Hyper X Savage 250 GB, 550 Corsair PW, CM CPU Cooler, Zalman Z11 Neo and MSI motherboard. I bought it in September 2016 for 1000 euros and the actual laptop is on sale for 1000 euros. Is it worth selling my PC for 750 euros? The CPU is 2 generations old, but the GPU prices went uppppp, just like ram prices. I don't really know what to do. Someone help me?

How does this Dell Inspiron 13 i7370 compare to a zenbook?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 09:16 PM PDT

This Inspiron from the Microsoft Canada store basically has everything I'm looking for outside of being a thinkpad (which I won't get in these specs for under $1k Cdn) an anti-glare/matte screen. Just wondering how it'd compare though to an ultrabook like a zenbook that's also 8 GB ram/256 SSD and a 7th gen or newer i5 with a 1080p screen.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/dell-inspiron-13-i7370-5593slv-pus-laptop/8qcb957fxlrd/7q93?cm_mmc=store&activetab=pivot%3aoverviewtab

This is for basic use as a student so portability/reliability is important, might have to install a VM for Linux.

Transfer Mechanical Engineering Student Seeking Workstation, <$2200,

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 08:36 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: < $2200 , USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specifications are the biggest deciding factor, ideally a nice balance between specs and battery.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as the laptop can fit into my backpack with reasonable ease i'm fine with any added weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd be running engineering programs such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, MATLAB, coding in Python as well as some light video and sound editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? While gaming isn't my largest concern, having a machine that could play some games would be a nice added bonus.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd really like a nice touchpad if possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like this laptop to get me through my undergrad and potentially through grad school . Thus am willing to adjust my budget if a better alternative is suggested.

    Question about Eluktronics laptops

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 07:48 PM PDT

So, I've posted in here before and found out about Eluktronics laptops. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy one but, having owned Mac products my whole life, I'm pretty new to PC in general. I'm looking at buying the Mech 15 or P957 (http://www.eluktronics.com/MECH-15-BYO#product-description http://www.eluktronics.com/P957HR-BYO) but I have a noob question. Do I need to purchase/install a HD separately? In the description the primary HD drive says empty. Again, am new to this so I'm just looking for clarity before I drop money on it. Any help/advise is appreciated.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 07:46 PM PDT

Hi reddit! I've posted a few times for myself but this time it's for somebody else. My girlfriend's crappy lenovo has shit the bed and its time for her to get an upgrade, especially since she's in the engineering school at her university. Hard part is that I can't get a max price point out of her besides "not too expensive," so if any of you guys can help me out, I'd be grateful.

Total budget and country of purchase: USA and unknown budged really. Probably around $500-600 as she doesn't want to keep buying laptops.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. She doesn't care about 2 in 1's but does want a touchscreen. Battery life is important as well as she hates having to carry around the charger for her current laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not incredibly important but still a consideration. Her current one is probably 1.5" thick or so and relatively hefty, so something better than that is a definite plus.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. She seem to like the 15.6" screen so stick with that.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. She's in the engineering department and has to run some CAD on it. She doesn't work with very large models so really a decent CPU and integrated graphics are probably fine for this. She mainly just uses it for browsing the web and doing homework so nothing too taxing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? She says that she doesn't want to play games on it, but I'd like to keep this open if possible. I like to play games occasionally and I'm trying to convert her.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? She'd like a touchscreen and a fingerprint reader if possible. Build quality is important as always because she'll being using it for school and wouldn't want it to give out on her.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Really I'm not sure what I'm asking for. I've never shopped for computers without knowing the max I'm willing to spend so I'm struggling to suggest laptops to her. I have a yoga 720 that she thinks is the shit so something with aluminum construction and generally looks solid would be great but I don't think that she's willing to spend the money that requires.

I've been looking at the Acer E15 models and it seems like the one with just integrated graphics or even the one with the MX150 might be just what she needs, but I'd like to get the opinion of others too.

If she didn't need to use CAD I'd suggest a nicer chromebook, but I don't think that's really what shes looking for.

Asus Gaming GL702ZC AMD Ryzen 5 1600 for my old PC ~1000 euro, 17", Romania

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 03:23 PM PDT

700-1000 euro, Romania Best specs, good CPU and GPU 17" Mostly gaming and coding Normal keyboard

I think I might've narrowed down my selection to Eurocom's "Mobile Supercomputers" line; are these really my best options or should I look elsewhere? Which base model would you recommend? What about parts selection?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 07:03 PM PDT

You can find my original post with the requirements here (ignore the exact budget mentioned there, just keep in mind I don't wanna spend more than I have to and don't wanna waste my money)

It looks like Eurocom's "Mobile Supercomputers" line is very close to meeting the requirements in my initial post, what do you guys think? Should I continue searching other brands, or these would be the best match I will be able to find? If I stick with them, which base model and which parts would you recomnend? And should I be looking for any accessories they don't offer there? Do cooling stands help to increase the life of a laptop significantly or just help with performance? Any you would recommend?

    ps: I'm in Portugal

Laptop for a Computer Science undergrad

    Posted: 22 Apr 2018 10:07 AM PDT

Hey! It's time for me to choose a laptop to buy and I thought this would be a great place to ask for an advice. So, I already have one small laptop, the HP Stream and so I want a second, more powerful laptop to work as a workstation for other needs.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: The United States, around $700-1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life doesn't matter a lot, I wish it to be durable and that it won't break like after a year of even careful usage.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important, just a not so heavy one so I can move it around in a backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I am mostly a Linux user, btw I use arch. :) However, I am thinking about installing Windows 10 on top of it and just use Linux based distros on my other laptop. Maybe at some moment in time, I can switch the OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Yes, max size is 14.1 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I mostly use Photoshop, don't do video editing. Some simple modeling, not some heavy rendering. If I play, I mostly play some indie or games like that that don't require a lot of computer resources. For example, civ5, don't starve, binding of Isaac, you get the idea, heh. However, I will use my laptop for programming and some heavy-duty tasks like neural networks training, image recognition, text recognition and other. However, I think if the task is really heavy, I can use some faculty workstations. We will see.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mean, if I play indie or civ5 or smth like that, around 60 would be nice. Just a preference.

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touchscreen. I want a really nice, easy to type and reliable keyboard that it is easy to type and it doesn't have a wide spacing between the keys. So a keyboard can give a good feeling of typing. Something like on the HP stream. No fingerprint readers (is this the IBM era? heh, please see below), no optical drives(it's 12018) but I want it to be durable and thus good quality build.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I think I covered most of the points, maybe just a black colored laptop. I may need a webcam and some kind of speakers in it. Also, I would really prefer a 1920x1080 screen resolution, that's quite important. Reliable wifi and sound card. It should be quiet. I don't wish my laptop to be as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Just a laptop that is quite enough under a normal stress. An additional point, I always wanted a thinkpad. I always saw the thinkpad's stiff keyboards and the keyboard nipple that everybody loves. So maybe you can recommend some Thinkpads and shops? However, if you have read all of this, Thanks for your attention!

I was thinking of getting the Zenbook UX430 or the Zenbook Flip 14 UX460 series? Not sure on the comparison yet.

I'll also be purchasing my office laptop as well that is under $2000, was thinking of Surface Book 2 13" as I would be doing some intensive digital art and game development. Portability, battery life, weight, screen, pen digitizer is important as well. Any suggestions on similar but cheaper alternatives to this?
