In Canada, for a 9 year old talking about scripting and coding, $1000?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 04:14 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: No idea what's reasonable and Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm not sure what would be best for a 9 year old teaching himself to script for Roblox.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all, I don't think.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I honestly don't know.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. NA

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Scripting/coding for Roblox

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Beyond Minecraft and Roblox, I have no idea.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing that I know of, but please tell me if anything is important!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm sorry. Lousy title. But I honestly don't even know what I'm looking for.

I've got a 9 year old who has decided to teach himself how to script and code (please do not laugh at me if that is totally redundant or just plain wrong). He wants to make Roblox games.

He currently has an ipad, no computer. He'd like a laptop and frankly, he's a really smart, awesome kid and he's determined to save up his money to buy one, so we'd like to buy it for him. Or, maybe let him "help" buy it becuase he's awfully committed to this.

So...with those VERY broad parameters, what am I looking for? I have no idea what kind of price I'm looking at, at all. But am willing (happy!) to save for the right thing because he's working so hard on this.

    EILI5?

    Thanks so much!

Is an ssd really that important?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2018 01:58 AM PDT

Found a laptop that is perfect for my budget and what I want. Only problem is that it has a 1TB HDD and no SSD. I'm going to be using this laptop mainly for school and gaming. I know laptops with SSD's use less time to boot up but other than that is there any big difference between a HDD and a SSD?

This is the laptop that I am wanting to buy: https://www.elkjop.no/product/data/barbar-pc/MSIGV627R2030/msi-gv62-7rd-2030ne-15-6-barbar-pc

Looking for a laptop for mostly school and college ($1500 USD budget)

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 11:59 PM PDT

So I live in Australia and I'm half-way through Year 12 and going into University next year. My current laptop is getting pretty old so I told my parents that I need a laptop for Year 12 and that I will use it through at least my first two years at Uni. Since my parents really focus on my education, they gave me a budget of $2000 Australian Dollars, which is pretty surprising since I usually really don't ask them for things. This converts to $1542 USD but it would be great if I could drop that down to $1300 - $1400 just to not cause any troubles for them. Been looking at some the new Macbook line and the fact that there is no USB port among other things baffles me, but other than that, it seems like a good choice. Dell XPS 13 or 15 is also a viable option but some of them prices are way outta my range.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Australia and $2k AUD ($1.5k AUD)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 isn't that important for me but the others are good

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would prefer a light and thin laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Mac or Windows preferably

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. NA Smaller screen preferred (13 inch preferred over 15 inch)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I play CSGO from time to time, so I'd only really want to do that. Maybe some small video editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mainly CSGO and 60-80 fps would be pretty good

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Having a quality keyboard that makes crisp noises is a priority lol. That's why I like Macbooks and XPS since I type A LOT.

Anyway, hope you guys can give me some suggestions. This is my first time on this sub and I would expect that this question gets asked a lot but it would be great if you guys could chuck me an answer.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some pretty light gaming. I'll be coding a lot, mostly using the D3D11 API. So, the laptops should be able to run my projects. Visual Studio is IDE

Looking for good laptop for general use and maybe some programming

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 10:22 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer a good battery life or best specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer a lighter laptop, ideally less than ~3.5 pounds. It's important that it's light.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I plan on using windows, and maybe dual booting Linux. I'm not a computer programmer, but I have thought about trying it out to see what it's like.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I like the 14" screen size, ideally HD

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not really for gaming or CAD, I have a desktop for that (ses below) . I may do some photo editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I played with the Lenovo carbon x1 today, and I really like that style of keyboard that has a higher press force and longer stroke. It feels more like the mechanical feedback keyboard I have for my desktop.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Mainly im looking for a solid laptop that is slim, portable, and feels good to use. I have a desktop with a gtx 1080, i5 6500, and 16gb ram, so I don't plan on using the laptop for very intensive tasks or gaming.

Like I said before, I like the look and feel of the Lenovo Carbon X1, but I think that it wouldn't really be necessary for me to get that powerful of a laptop considering I already have a desktop.

I was thinking about the Lenovo T470

    https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/landingpage/promotions/weekly-sale/thinkpad-laptops/?IPromoID=LEN234110

Are there any better options out there?

Looking for a 13” ultrabook for college and light gaming on a $1200 budget

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 08:58 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max $1200. Buying is US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life would be ideal but really just the best specs I can get

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm buying a 13 inch ultrabook, they're all pretty thin and light so unless there's a major difference I don't care

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing particularly intensive. The most intensive thing I can think I'll be doing is playing Civ V/VI and maybe Football Manager

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen is a requirement. As for build quality, as long as it isn't made out of flimsy plastic it's not that big of a deal. Other than that it doesn't really matter

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My top choices before finding this sub were the Lg gram 13 and the Asus Zenbook ux331. I've looked at the XPS 13 but my past 2 laptops have been Dell's and they haven't been very reliable and the customer service has sucked, so unless it's significantly better I'm not interested

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 04:34 PM PDT

I travel a lot. It doesn't necessarily have to be a laptop. I could do a tower monitor all in one combo as I don't move my computer to much but I don't want a huge desktop when I fly over seas. I'd like it to be good enough to play games and it would be super awesome to not have to get a tv to play ps4.

2D-CAD/Work away from home laptop $1000~$1300

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 06:38 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Would like to keep it around $1000 and absolutely top out at $1300 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Best bang for the buck. Battery life is 2nd priority. Ideally, I'd like to be able to be away from a plug for at least 4 hours while writing emails and operating small engineering programs, likely not using CAD unplugged.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I still need to be able to shove this in a backpack and get on a plane so doesn't have to be paper thin but decently compact.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. win 10, any edition

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly microsoft office suite, enercalc, risa2d/3d, autocad 2D, ramsteel, retain pro, rarely Revit models, rarely solidworks models, very very large PDFs, a million chrome tabs probably.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a won't really be playing games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? would like to have 10key but can live without it. absolutely want 16gb ram and at least 4gb gfx card memory. I work mostly off a cloud so a large SSD isn't that important but I would want to go no smaller than 256gb ideally 512gb SSD.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is mostly to replace my workstation as I now work from home and travel. I travel to the office about once a month or so and sometimes out of state so I do need to be able to pack it up and go but otherwise I'm treating this as a workstation. I've been looking at the Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop.

Mobile Workstation for Creative Artist/Home Builder-Designer

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 06:28 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop to replace my antediluvian 2007 iMac + 2007 Wacom Cintiq 12WX.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Hopefully around $2,500.00 USD (some flexibility particularly if build quality will get me even close to the longetivy of my old iMac)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Leaning towards 2-in-1 Enough specs to keep it running necessary programs (see below) for the foreseeable future (hopefully 5+ years)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would like it to be portable, but doesn't need to sacrifice performance for portability

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ideally 15"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe CC (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, After Effects) Architectural rendering software (ie Revit, SketchUp, AutoCAD, etc) ZBrush

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Would be nice to play some of my Xbox games (ie Battlefield 1, Rocket League, etc), but not the priority

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build-quality Professional-grade pen/stylus that can draw/paint without latency Able to hook up to desktop displays

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm unsure whether to take the 2-in-1 route, which would be nice to work from anywhere (ie couch, airplane, etc) without lugging around a drawing tablet; however, it seems you can get more bang for your buck from a traditional laptop (then use savings to purchase new drawing tablet... but then the cost tends to be on par with the aforementioned 2-in-1)

My workflow typically consists of home building and design during the day, which is about a 50/50 split between being mobile (in my truck or on the job site) and at a desktop. During the evenings/weekends, I do a lot of creative artwork (currently with an iPad Pro but have found it is seriously lacking for my needs and more of a hobbyist tool/sketchpad). This off-hours work includes but isn't limited to illustration, digital painting, and video editing.

    Swift 1 or Spin 1?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 05:01 PM PDT

I'm a little bit torn between these two. At this price point, I really like their build quality and screen resolution. I like the Swift 1 for being a bit bigger, at 13.3 inches. (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834316335&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-Notebooks-_-N82E16834316335&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIguaxqsTH2gIVJijTCh35kgDgEAkYAiABEgJ1ovD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) I also like the Spin 1, because it's a convertible, and apparently has a somewhat nicer screen than the Swift. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0756TCFR5/ref=sxts_sxwds-puwylo_rv_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3534076942&pd_rd_wg=aBu6i&pf_rd_r=E61N5RVDKV9K0HSE9NVT&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B0756TCFR5&pd_rd_w=kgbvd&pf_rd_i=acer+spin+1&pd_rd_r=f92f532d-93ad-40f8-9997-c609a4638409&ie=UTF8&qid=1524182236&sr=1) I don't care about the Pentium processors, or the 64gb of storage space, or the 4gb of memory. My current laptop is an Acer Chromebook C710, and it's served me well for about 4 years. Obviously, basically any new laptop would be a huge upgrade over that. Now, which one should I get? Anyone with one of these have any suggestions for me? I would appreciate any advice.
