I think my new ISP might be screwing me. Is there an easy way to log connection quality over time and/or per activity?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 04:36 PM PDT

Disclaimer: I don't live in the US.

I've switched to a new ISP in the past year and I'm having frequent quality drops. I'm supposed to have 100 mb/s, and internet speed test usually tells me that's the case, but sometimes I can't play youtube videos without having it buffer every 15 seconds, and can't even load some pictures without having it load strip by strip like at dial-up speeds. I also notice latency spikes as well.

I would like to log my internet quality: ping and speed and anything else that might be important.

Is there some kind of software I can use to plot my connection over time?

Also, is there a way to plot my connection per activity? like, when I'm just redditing, when I'm watching a video, using torrent, playing games, etc. . I think I might be getting throttled doing certain things, and I would like to map them.

    can you guys help?

Surge protector started to crackle and pop at the outlet, lost power in the protector and don’t know if it or the outlet was the problem.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 04:16 AM PDT

When the crackling stopped I looked at the protector, the ground light was off and the surge light was on. It wasn't giving power to anything. When I unplugged it made a loud popping noise and crackled a lot. I plugged in a spare power bar to the same outlet and it works, however I only have one thing plugged into the power bar (I usually have my computer and a couple monitors plugged in, but I'm afraid to connect those). What can I do to figure out if it was the protector or the outlet?

Help needed for clearing HDD space... One program is taking 883 GB of space, and I can't delete it!

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 02:34 AM PDT

So I was deleting some old programs to free up some HDD space and came across this.

I have never installed StarCraft on my PC, and when I click on uninstall the Blizzard uninstaller pops up but can't find the uninstaller (most likely because I never installed it).

I have never seen something like this before, and StarCraft, even the remastered version should not be 883 GB big! Any help or input is appreciated, Thanks!

Help with certain keyboard accessibility option related reg keys

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 04:52 AM PDT

I pretty much only use my PC to game, and I recently found a tweak online which makes your keyboard much more responsive for gaming, which can be a huge advantage for movement with WASD.

I'm not sure if this is snake oil though, so my question is what each of these keys do (especially the changed ones between the default and tweaked.

    --- Default values according to creator of this tweak --- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response "AutoRepeatDelay"="1000" "AutoRepeatRate"="500" "BounceTime"="0" "DelayBeforeAcceptance"="1000" "Flags"="126" "Last BounceKey Setting"=dword:00000000 "Last Valid Delay"=dword:00000000 "Last Valid Repeat"=dword:00000000 "Last Valid Wait"=dword:000003e8 --- Tweaked values --- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response] "AutoRepeatDelay"="400" "AutoRepeatRate"="2" "BounceTime"="0" "DelayBeforeAcceptance"="0" "Flags"="126" "Last BounceKey Setting"=dword:00000000 "Last Valid Delay"=dword:00000000 "Last Valid Repeat"=dword:00000000 "Last Valid Wait"=dword:00000000

What exact parts do i need to replace the SFX PSU in my akitio node (psu already ordered) replacing it with a 500W, hooking it up to a 1080. i know i need some kind of pcie power cables and maybe an adapter and also a thing to make the psu power on in the absence of a mobo, need the exact details

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 04:35 AM PDT

replacing bc psu is not supplying nearly the advertised 400W, akitio = douchebags

Unable to save any files whatsoever

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 04:32 AM PDT

I've got an issue regarding saving files on Windows 10. Every time I try to save a file, no matter which program I use, those of Microsoft, too, I get an error stating the file could not be found, while I'm trying to save it. Duh, it doesn't exist yet, I'm trying to create it...

    Useful info:

W10-Enterprise 64-bit latest version Same result across all programs (e.g. W10's screenshot utility, Resource Hacker, iTunes, Notepad etc. etc. etc.) it just doesn't work; also, I'd send a screenshot but I can't take any...

    Error looks something like this:

    Save as

    /\

    / ! \ ...\Desktop\hello.txt

    ------- Unable to locate file

     Verify file name and retry

    Your help's much appreciated!

Edit: I am able to save files to other drives than the local one (C:). So, a USB drive, for example, does work

Trying to recover data from hard drive, directory is corrupted.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 10:22 PM PDT

Hello, so recently i dropped my hard drive, and obviously things got a little messed up. It still spins and loads up to where i can access files, shows the proper partitions and their taken space, and generally works right. I've transferred a few programs from it just fine, and after taking it to a shop they say there doesn't seem to be any crippling physical damage to it, however what i really need is my pictures and music off of it, which (if i am correct) is stored in my user profile, which, when clicked, says it is corrupted and cannot be accessed. Paying for data recovery is out of the question, so what would be the best way to access these files to transfer them? Also the hard drive and computer i have it connected to are both running Windows 10.

If I would like to format my computer and reset it to factory settings, BUT I want to keep certain programs without having to reinstall, should i BACKUP or CLONE? WIN 10

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 03:15 AM PDT

Sorry the only thing i am use to is "backup" and ive got a WD Passport thats 1TB and ive got 380GB used on pc. I want to keep SOME programs but most of it is music programs with programs installed INTO the main program "fl studio and all the vsts." And when i install VSTS alot of the files are spread out through hidden folders and program files, program files (86), app data, etc.. So is it better to clone the HD to my External and then pick out my folders i need? Or can i just back up my C drive and do the same? Sorry if this is confusing im comfused as well. I am using Acronis True Image WD Edition if that helps.. IDK if i should CLONE DISK or just BACKUP.

I have an Honor 8 and the little notification light doesn't seem to work.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 02:27 AM PDT

Instead it lights up under that speaker line (not sure what it is called, english is not my first language) that is next to the camera. It is barely noticeable, but when I charged my phone a little while ago i saw it under it. I sadly can't take a picture of it right now, because I only have this phone. Is it possible that the light shifted to the site in some way?

Can someone tell me the pros and cons (if any) of having your own internet router vs “renting” from your ISP?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 10:24 PM PDT

Obviously not paying a monthly fee is sweet, but is it worth the investment? Is there a significant/ noticeable difference in connection&speed? I'm not the least bit tech-savvy - anything helps!

How should I carry my laptop around to prevent discoloration?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 10:20 PM PDT

I have a Herschel pop quiz backpack and I typically put my laptop in a thin sleeve and just put it in the main compartment with all my books. Recently, I realized that there's discoloration near the edges of my laptop and I want to know how should I prevent this from happening? Should I put my laptop into the built in laptop sleeve of my backpack instead? Or should I get a separate bag to carry my laptop around?

    SAS/SATA Backplane (p/n SAS743TQ) - SAS vis 7pin SATA?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 01:32 AM PDT

I currently have a Supermicro SAS743TQ backplane connected to a motherboard with Adaptec HostRAID. The specifications for the SAS743TQ state is supports SAS and SATA drives, however the connectors on the rear of the backplane are standard 7pin SATA.

How does this work with SAS drives? Can the backplane allow SAS to communicate to a SATA controller? If not, how can I connect a SAS controller card to this backplane?

boot loop with bootable USB device

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 09:32 PM PDT

    Hello everybody :)

I want to repair/ newly setup my gf's laptop. She had problems with a windows update. Now everytime we start the device we get following error:

Put in the external data storage device and press "OK" (translated from following german error text: "Legen Sie das externe Speichermedium ein, und drücken Sie "OK"")

I successfully created a bootable USB device. The bios recognized it as "UEFI: Generic Flash Disk 8.07, Partition 1"

I select the "UEFI..." as Boot Option #1 and disabled Boot Option #2. Having the bios setup like this results in a bootling loop (the bios opens immediately once i restart the device)

When i set the Boot Option #2 to "Windows Boot Manager" (only other option) we get the "external data storage device"-error again.

    Device: ASUS E200h

    Bios Vendor: American Megatrends

Version 303 (i already successfully updated the bios)

ISO on the USB drive is Win10 32bit (same should be on the device; she can't remember if she upgraded from win7 to win10 or had stock win10 if that matters).

    thanks alot for every suggestion

Will a clean windows reinstall stop crashes?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 01:06 AM PDT

I will try to keep this brief. I recently had my computer crash a lot (as well as hang when starting windows 50% of the time) when playing games or watching youtube videos, so I took it to get repaired at the shop that built it. They couldn't find a problem with my computer and suggested that I try a new power cable. I bought a new power cable and my computer started fine and it did not crash for a whole week even though I played games.

Then a week later different problems started happening. I've had my computer freeze, I've had it constantly restart itself every 10 seconds, I've had it turn on but the screen was blank, and most notably I've had the blue screen messages IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_TOO and UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.

I am wondering if this is the kind of thing that can be fixed by wiping the hard drive and operating system and starting fresh with windows 8. These problems began when I was forced to upgrade to windows 10. If this sounds like a good idea please let me know.

    My specs:

    RAM: 16GB

Processor: Intel Quad Core i7-4790 Processor 3.6Ghz

Hard Drive: 2TB Serial ATA Hard Disk Drive

    Solid State Drive: 120GB SSD

Graphics Card: 2GB nVidia Geforce GTX750

I have two devices(ps4 and a computer) that I want to connect to the Internet via ethernet cables.

I read a little about what's the best way to do it, and I think I should use a network switch but I wanna what do you guys think? How does a switch work(on a basic level)? Whats the pros and cons of switch? And is a ethernet splitter a good solution?

And please if you answer try and write an in depth ELI5 answer, because even I'm no expert I would like to get an expert opinion.

I’m not sure if the appropriate flare but I’m having issues with my computer after installing a new motherboard, cpu, CPU fan, and ram.

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 09:04 PM PDT

After installing Hess new parts my keyboard and mouse only work in bios and once windows loads they no longer work so I can't log in or anything. Idk if it matters but when looking at boot priority it doesn't show both my SSD which I have windows on AND my HDD which I THINK I have all the drivers on. It makes me choose one or the other and doesn't let me load both. I would be so thankful if someone would be able to help me out, the sooner the better but obviously if I have to wait I have to wait.

    Hard Disk Drive is unrecognizable/corrupted

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 08:57 PM PDT

    Hi all,

A few days ago I decided to do a backup of my laptop with a 2TB Seagate BUP Slim BK hard drive I have. Up until now it had always worked well and it's only around 1.5 years old.

While doing the backup, I noticed the data transfer was interrupted and it was showing as 0 bytes/sec. I left it for 5 minutes and upon seeing it didn't work, I canceled the transfer and plugged it back in. As I did it, the partition I was using (out of two it has) became unaccesible. First, it showed as loading in the explorer and eventually froze it if I left it opne. The other partition however had no issue. I ran the CHKDSK command on the cmd and after 6 hours, it was finally fixed.

The next day I decided I'd resume the backup. When it was nearing completion, the same issue arised, so I cancelled again and plugged it back. This time however, using CHKDSK said something along the lines of it being RAW. After a few tries, and checking in two other computers, the disk is unnaccesible.

Right now, I plug it in, and I get a notification of the other partition having an issue and needing to be repaired. When trying to open it, the sound Windows gives when unplugging something plays and the partitions don't show up in the explorer anymore.

I can still see the Seagate on the Task Bar and under Device Management. The disk is on and running. Disk Management doesn't show it however. Software repair/scan tools can't detect it.

Does anybody know if there's a way to recover the files, or at least to format it? Or should I just give up and consider it dead?

Currently running W10 if it helps.

A girl told me she has a RAM shortage and then tells me she has 50 GB of DDR4.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:36 AM PDT

Like I tried multiple times to explain that its so insanely impractical to have 50 GB of DDR4 memory and to then say you're having issues because of a RAM shortage is even more crazy. But she kept claiming that she did two years of Information Systems Technology and she knows what she is talking about. I requested multiple times for her to show me in the system settings how much RAM she has even going as far as telling her how to do it (she claimed she already knew how to show me) but she kept refusing and saying that I wouldn't believe her anyway. So then I clearly knew she was bullshitting and had no idea what RAM is so I questioned further. Then she said that she shouldn't have to explain herself when she knows shes is right. So I gave her this analogy, "That is like me saying I have 1 ton of gold in my basement. I don't show anyone I just expect everyone to believe its there. And then I complain about everything being too expensive and not being able to afford anything.". She then asks me to stop messaging her and states that she doesnt have time to deal with my stupidity (even said it in spanish expecting me to not know what she meant for some reason). So I eventually do and now my question to you tech support reddit is what did I do wrong?
