I travel a lot for work (remote worker). I currently have a custom built laptop which I want to ditch because the case / build is a bit rubbish. Also I am beginning to have issues with screen retention after 2.5 years in climate extremes (dry -18C to humid 38C).

    Current rig:

    • Chassis & Display Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
    • Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)
    • Memory (RAM) 8GB Kingston SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)
    • Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12
    • 1st Hard Disk 500GB WD BLACK 2.5" WD5000LPLX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 32MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
    • 2nd Hard Disk 500GB WD BLACK 2.5" WD5000LPLX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 32MB CACHE (7200 rpm)
    • DVD/BLU-RAY Drive 2nd/3rd HDD HARD DRIVE OPTICAL BAY CADDY (9.5mm)
    • Memory Card Reader Integrated 6 in 1 Card Reader (SD /Mini SD/ SDHC / SDXC / MMC / RSMMC)
    • Battery Optimus Series 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (62.16WH)
    • Power Cable 1 x UK Power Lead & 120W AC Adaptor
    • Thermal Paste STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
    • Sound Card Intel 2 Channel High Def. Audio + SoundBlaster™ Cinema 2
    • Wireless/Wired Networking GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® AC-8260 M.2 (867Mbps, 802.11AC) +BT 4.0, vPRO
    • USB Options 4 x USB 3.0 PORTS AS STANDARD
    • 4G Module Huawei ME936 4G Module for Mobile Internet

I would like a laptop capable of using the full adobe suite (I do a fair amount of design, video and image editing) and playing AAA high-end games. I play CPU and GPU intensive games like the Total War, so I assume I will need decent RAM, CPU, GPU pulling power. I also like to play GTA, FO4, SSE etc. so will definitely need a decent GPU (ideally want to up my VRAM quite a bit) and maybe something to up my R/W (SSD or Optane).

I'm willing to up my budget for a 4k screen if it is possible. Let me know folks. Lather me in suggestions.

    Cheers.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a PC that can run basically any software (which is why I'd want one with an Intel Core i7). Thank you!

    [UK] Mid-range gaming, £500-600

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Performance for value

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Non-factor

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, notably games such as: Overwatch, HotS, Warframe, PUBG, GW2

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No preference.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically, I plan on travelling a bit, and want to keep up contact and habits with friends while I do so. So I'm cutting off a bit of my travelling budget for a laptop that can play the games I usually do, without any issue or cause for frustration. I could likely spare up to and around £700, but, the cheaper the better, without sacrificing what I want from it.

US, $1,000-1,200, Gaming/school, Acer Predator Helios 300 vs. MSI GL62VR

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 02:10 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1,000-1,200, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. has to be decent battery,

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? only some what

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch, no bigger than 16

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. gaming, modeling/engineering simulation programs for school

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? settings for games like witcher 3 just need to be between medium-high

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? something that won't break apart and die after 1 year. I'd prefer to make it last a few years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've done some researching around and I'm personally stuck between these two laptops (not buying from new egg but it just makes it easier to compare): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16834154702 and https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834316157 amazon sells the acer for around 1,000. I'm more just unsure about the build quality. I've never bought any products from Acer or MSI before so I have zero knowledge on if I'm going to be buying a piece of shit that won't have any longevity to it.

edit: or something like Lenovo Legion Y720, or some asus computer like rog GL702VM.

I've noticed asus sells some gtx 1070's for only a little more but they also seem to struggle with battery life.

I've tried to do some reading on general brand/build quality and from what I'm seeing, it seems like lenovo>asus>acer>msi. This correct?

Need help deciding between t480s, x1 carbon, or xps15

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 05:16 PM PDT

I am currently looking at these 3 laptops. I am coming from a 2011 MacBook pro that is struggling just a bit too much now. I am looking for a laptop that will last at least 4 years, hopefully more.

I have attached the links for the setups that I would get.

This laptop will primarily be used for work, big data analysis, some R, etc. I am worried about the screen with the T480s, the heat and inability to upgrade with the x1 carbon and the xps. Any suggestions?

Looking for a (small) Windows laptop for school that has an Intel Core i7, at least 500GB storage and I would like a numpad. What I'm not looking for is 2-in-1 laptop, touchscreen, detachable (or a graphics card). Just need a computer that's good for school and can handle some stuff...

New laptop for study and light gaming. UK ~£400

    Posted: 19 Apr 2018 12:45 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~£400, United Kingdom

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Looking for best spec for money, but primary requirement is reliability.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A - But number pad is preferred, which I imagine will affect this.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming is desirable, but not required. Photo editing is desirable, but low priority.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play Factorio, at standard settings. No other games are really relevant.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Again, main requirement is for reliability. Laptop will be mainly used for uni work – so word processing, some math software such as Maxima and Minitab, Internet. A number pad is preferred.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 15 5567, which actually is suitable for my needs and is acceptable as a template for the sort of performance I'm looking for. The problem is that this laptop is really unreliable and has constant hardware/software issues. As I use it mainly for university work I need to get something more reliable.

    13-15" Laptop Suggestions

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 07:10 PM PDT

I am looking for a 13-15" laptop. I have a gaming desktop already that handles most of the work I do, but I would like a personal laptop as well.

I would like something that is well built, fairly thin, nice display, and nice keyboard/trackpad. I would prefer a 15" laptop, but if there is something that comes to mind that is 13/14", that may work as well!

I plan on using it for browsing and light work (no CAD or graphic intensive applications). HOWEVER, if someone has a suggestion of a laptop that does have a dedicated graphics card, that's even better.

The main reason I am asking this instead of just typing "cheap laptop" in Google is, I don't mind a laptop that is a few years old. I know that Macbooks would perfectly fit my needs, but they are so damn expensive even after a few years of age.

My budget it around 500-600, so something around there would be ideal. Thank you in advance!

[US] Please suggest a laptop for my varied uses at work

Total budget and country of purchase: US ~$900 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money How important is weight and thinness to you? thinness more important than weight, small screen size nice for portability, none of these are critical factors Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferred, mac acceptable Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Sometimes my work requires me to run scripts for recoloring/rendering 3D objects in pymol. Often handling very large spreadsheets and other data processing tools. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming not important - desktop at home for that Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touch screen potentially nice for art side projects but work comes first Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi everyone. I'm a biologist who has been scraping by with a laptop that was bottom of the barrel 3 years ago. Now I'm using more and more intensive programs which my computer is struggling to cope with - time to upgrade. Key uses - fast operations in data processing Fast rendering of objects VGA/HDMI preferred for varied conference room adapters, but there are always workarounds Battery life not a critical concern - typically at my desk unless moving for speaking occasions Thanks for any input.

Want a Change of Pace from My Yoga 720 13" - $600 USD

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 09:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Around $600 but up to $750 USD if necessary.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is a must as I'm a student, best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight isn't terribly important to me, but don't want to have a super thick laptop either. So nothing much over an inch thick probably.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows all the way, needs to be able to run various different kinds of software.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I have a 13" screen at the moment and it is alright, but I'd like to move up to a 15.6" screen. I'm not set on that though as I kinda like having a smaller laptop on occasion.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD and light gaming. Stuff like Fusion 360, Inventor, Solidworks, AutoCAD. As far as games go, nothing crazy, but I'd like to run Fortnight, CSGO, various indy games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing crazy, just like Fortnight, CSGO, indy games. I'd like to shoot for around 60 fps on higher settings but I don't want to be unrealistic.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As it'll be my main keyboard, a good keyboard is a must. I quite like the one that's on my current yoga 720. Some sort of Window's Hello ( camera or fingerprint sensor) would be nice as well as a touchscreen. I'm willing to give up a touchscreen if I have to but I'd really like to have one.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So I currently have a yoga 720 13" with the i5 8th gen intel, 1080p screen model that I bought last December. It's a great laptop and I love it. I've been using it to take notes during lectures and it's been my main computer. It runs CAD pretty well but it's pretty poor when it comes to running games.

The thing is, I got this laptop because I wanted to use it to take notes on during classes and while it has been doing a fine job, the quality of writing isn't really the same as on an iPad. So with the newest cheap iPad being out and supporting their stylus, I'm looking to exchange my yoga for an ipad and a more beefy laptop. If possible I don't want to loose the quality of the keyboard or the screen, or much of the battery time, but I don't need a 2-1 laptop and I don't need it to be as small anymore(since I won't be moving it around as much). I love using laptops with touchscreens, but if the specs are right I'd consider forgoing that feature.

I've been looking at certified refurbished dell 7567 for around $700 and they seem pretty nice with the 1050ti card, but I realistically probably don't need something that strong and I'd like to go cheaper since I'd be getting an ipad too. Even something like an MX150 is probably enough power to play the games I want but a full 1050 wouldn't hurt.

So yeah, I've been looking around enough that my head hurts a little bit, so now I'm asking you guys, what do you think? Is there a laptop that fits what I want but just can't find?

      Thanks!

Looking for a multimedia laptop that isn't beefy but isn't wimpy either.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-1300, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs but not abysmal battery (<3hour life)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately; I'd like something portable (>5lbs) but it's not a complete dealbreaker

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy multitasking but moderate gaming as well. For programs: MS Visual Studio, Spotify, Discord, many browser tabs; for games, Fallout 4 @ med graphics level intensity.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 2-3 year old games at medium settings at 45-60fps at 1080p

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 16GB+ RAM is a must, midrange dGPU is very preferable. Reliable build quality; I've been spoiled by aluminum shells. IPS display. 10-key and good speakers is a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want the option to game and I am a very heavy multitasker (30+ firefox tabs, IDE, 1080p video all at once. I eclipse 8GB ram often, and hitting <12GB regularly.). I really enjoy my mid-2015 Lenovo Y50-70, but the 860M I own isn't all that tough anymore and I've grown tired of the "gamer" aesthetic. I listen to a lot of music (at least 30 hours a week) and I like clarity, so I want decent speaker drivers.

Help: Torn between Dell 7773 or Lenovo Flex 5 14"

    Posted: 18 Apr 2018 08:51 PM PDT

Dell kills the Lenovo in most stat categories.

17" Dell has a 2GB HDD and a 256 SSD. 16G Ram. i7 processor. I have an opportunity to get the Dell 7773 for 700 bucks, lightly used. (Is just came out in January or something.)

14" Lenovo has support for a pen. The Lenovo would be from Costco with an active pen for 700 (plus tax).

So, I am taking a photoshop class but I am not sure how much I would use an active stylus after this.

Help me determine which one to buy because I am really torn.
