How much power do I need in a game g laptop?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:46 PM PDT

I'm looking for a lightweight laptop to serve as my portable device that I use at school/on the go. This won't be my main device as I have a desktop at home for all my heavy tasks. I just want this laptop to be able to be able to do basic tasks and run a few games. I will mainly be playing dragon ball fighterz and after that Fortnite and Stardew Valley. Do I need a dedicated gaming laptop or am I better off with something cheaper. I don't want an expensive laptop because at that point I'd rather invest in another desktop.

Need a laptop for multi-use! (Crying for help)

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:51 AM PDT

    Hello!

I've been looking for a laptop for the past few weeks, and I'm struggling to get anywhere! Budget is £700-£1200

    I want a laptop for:

    • Videos - Youtube / iPlayer / itvhub
    • Word / Excel
    • Surfing the web, twitter, facebook.
    • Light Gaming (only Runescape)

    Looking for:

    • Good display

    • Good build quality

    • Good battery life

    • backlit keyboard

    • light, portable, easy to carry

    • looks nice

I've looked at a few laptops, some which I like, but they all seem to have faults. So hoping someone here could help me out a bit..!

I was looking at the Macbook Pro 13", entry level - and I quite liked the look of it and how it handled. But it might not be good enough for the light gaming. I'm happy to deal with 30-40fps, and can play in minimum settings.

I also liked the Dell XPS 13" - however through searching the web noticed that it has 'coil whine', and I don't want to pay a lot of money for something that has a major fault

I definitely don't want a HP product, because the last laptop I had, kept getting faulty hinges, so I don't trust their build quality.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated - because I cant seem to make up my mind or find anything! :(

Dell Inspiron 7577 or Lenovo Legion Y720

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:51 AM PDT

I'm trying to decide between the 7577 and Y720 both with identical specs and almost the same price, the thing I'm worried about is that people tell me Lenovo is not that durable so is that or is actually well built?

15.6" Dell vs Lenovo vs Clevo reseller [Italy]

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 03:38 AM PDT

Hello! I'm looking to change laptop and I'd like to buy one that could handle both gaming (Overwatch, Terraria, Source games are the ones I'd play most) and light Blender use (3D modeling & pictures rendering).

I've narrowed down the choice between three contenders:

I've been eyeing the Lenovo for a while because I trust the brand, but a friend suggested to me the Dell. I don't have much experience and though I know it's a trustworthy brand, i don't know how it handles games and heavy duty work in general.

The Clevo reseller it's slightly more expensive if I configure it with the same specs, so I'd have to cut the additional SSD to stay in the budget, but from my understanding Clevo is both reliable and easily upgreadable.

If you have any suggestion, I'd gladly take it. I'm not in a hurry and I'm still deciding (I'm still trying to understand if the 1050ti would be enough or if it'd be better to aim for the 1060) but any input is very welcome. Thank you for reading and have a good one!

    [<700$] Upgradeable, light-medium gaming laptop

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 01:18 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase Under $700-ish refurbished or new, Indonesia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Built for the specs

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight: not too important, thinness not important at all

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or not any OS at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Somewhat more or equal to 14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and normal educational usage

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

F1, MotoGP, PES and FIFA, and other soccer or motorsport-related game with medium to high resolution and frame rate (60fps is good enough, but I won't mumble much if I have to deal with lower fps (not lower than 30).

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    1. Built for durability (but not necessarily ruggedized).

    2. Upgradeable, in terms of additional hard drive and/or RAM.

    3. A quad core Intel (i5 or i7) CPU. Looking for true quad core, not dual core with Hyperthreading.

    4. Optical drive is bonus points, but I can do without it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not too important, but I used to use a HP Pavillion Slatebook 14(?). It works just fine for medium setting at PES 2017, OK for F1 2017 until you moved the setting from Ultra Low, passable at MotoGP 2017, really miserable frame rate for both PES and FIFA 2018 (I forgot which setting did I put it at).

Looking for a 800-1200 USD laptop for moderate gaming and everyday use.

    Posted: 01 Apr 2018 12:59 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

      $800-$1200, live in the USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Don't want a 2 in 1. Battery life, at least 4 hours. More is a plus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't mind a heavy laptop, but lighter could be a deciding factor between two similar options.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

12-16 inches. I want it to be portable without issues.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Don't plan on doing video editing, do want to game. Mostly play League of Legends, but I would like the option to play new games without my laptop being unsuitable.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

League of Legends, I'm not an FPS or graphics snob so as long as it can remain stable at 60 fps I'm happy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want something that will last me several years without needing any replacements. Not looking for a touchscreen, and the presence or lack of one won't influence my decision at all.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I kinda have low standards cause my current laptop is a piece of junk. I've never been a particularly heavy PC gamer, so I can't judge how much better or important higher specs are, which is why I'm here.

Switch from XPS15 9560 to MacBook Pro 13”

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:46 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I've had an XPS15 9560 (4K touch, 16gb ram, and gtx1050) for just under a year now. At first, I loved it, but recently it's proved to be quite unreliable...

I am almost constantly running out of memory, blue screening, or dealing with crashing programs. I spend a lot of time in photoshop, premiere pro, and after effects, as well as like to have at least a million chrome tabs open while researching. I did a clean wipe of the hard drive a couple of months ago, and the problems haven't gone away— I'm starting to think that maybe windows isn't for me.

I figure that I can sell my XPS15 for about 2500$ CAD, and get a top of the line 13" MacBook Pro. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Will the lower specs frustrate me?

It seems counterintuitive to 'upgrade' to a laptop with lower specifications, but I'm hoping that the better resource management will account for that.

I'm an iPhone user so the ecosystem change will also be nice.

Thanks for the help! EDIT: I realize that I didn't follow the rules, and use the form, so I'll post this again in r/laptops in case this gets deleted.

Anything under $1300 better than Acer Predator 300 15.6?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:31 PM PDT

I'm a contractor and constantly on the road traveling, I was going to build a PC but it's just not cohesive for my lifestyle. I'm been looking at the Acer Predator helios 300 15.6 for 1k on Amazon, is there anything for $1300 or under out on the market?

I'm mostly going to be gaming and then basics use past that (email, and file organization for work).

I like the build of the Acer Predator 300 but I have researched the screen isn't the best. - would this be able to hook up to a nice monitor while I'm home and be capable of producing quality graphics?

-is the 17inch better for the money with the 1070 graphics card? (I'll be playing PUBG and siege mostly)

Finally thank you for looking this over, I'm on a mobile phone (I haven't had a computer in nearly 3 years). I know I didn't fill out a valid form but wanted some help from you guys! Happy Sunday.

-please excuse all Grammer and spelling mistakes

    [$500-$1000 USD] 15" Multimedia editing/light gaming laptop

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 10:21 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$1000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent battery life (3+ hours), IPS display

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important, but willing to sacrifice some bulk for cooling performance.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch, I'm currently using a 17 inch and I don't think I would miss some screen real estate for portability.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, Premiere, Unreal Engine 4, Maya, Guild Wars 2, League of Legends

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60fps at near max or max settings in League of Legends and Guild Wars 2

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Preferred without disk drive, as I found myself accidentally opening it while pulling out my current laptop out of my bag. SD card reader and good cooling would be nice. Must have HDMI. USB-C would also be nice, but not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently using a laptop from 2013 that's showing its age. Interested in the Eluktronic models and maybe the Acer E15, but was wondering if there was any hidden gems that I haven't discovered yet.

Searching for a high-end laptop with decent speakers and a GPU

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 11:35 AM PDT

I have had my Dell XPS L502x for many years and I have never needed a desktop since. The laptop has great built-in speakers (there's even a subwoofer under the hood) and a reasonable GPU (at least, it used to be). I'm hoping to finally swap out this dinosaur for a new laptop but it's been difficult to find anything comparable in the current generation. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good replacement? I'm hoping for decent audio, a non-Intel GPU and my budget goes up to 2K. Cheers!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £2,000, UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Portability would be nice, but not essential

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming and occasional heavy computation for scientific research (molecular modelling)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Skyrim at full specs would be nice!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not important

Looking for a powerful PC laptop for music production along with some video editing

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:28 PM PDT

Budget & country of purchase: $2,000.00 USD

Preferences in terms of 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money: I'd prefer not to 2 in 1. Battery life should be at least decent. At least i7 and 16 GB RAM

Weight & Thinness: I'd prefer something relatively thin and sleek, but I'm willing too compromise for the sake of performance. Don't want something so bulky I can't carry it in a backpack, though.

    OS: Windows.

    Preferred Screen Size: N/A

Programs I'll be running: Mainly music production in DAWs (Ableton, Fruity Loops, Pro Tools) and some video editing (Adobe Premiere), light gaming as well. I'll probably end up trying Fortnite, that doesn't look super high-end.

Gaming: As stated above, Fortnite. Mainly older games though (2010- and behind). As for FPS, N/A

Specific requirements: Reliable build quality that'll last me at least a few years. Don't care about touch screen or fingerprint reader, but if they're there, it's ok.

Finishing thoughts: As a cherry on top, I suppose customization options would be cool. Maybe making the keyboard glow green or something. But at this point, TOTALLY optional, I'm much more enamored by performance.

    Thanks in advance!

[<$500 USD] Portable, Light-Gaming, Upgradeable Laptop with Type-C Charging (United States)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 09:11 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Less than $500 and being purchased in the US. I DO NOT NEED AN SSD OUT OF THE BOX AS I HAVE ONE ALREADY.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't have any particular need for a specialized form factor or long battery life. I would really like type-c charging however as I have some high capacity power banks that I already travel with.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be reasonable light as I want to travel with it.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, I'll probably run Linux off a USB or something.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A (I would like the resolution to be 1080p though.)

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some light gaming on the go. Some Running With Rifles, FTL, Starcraft 2, Besiege. Nothing too intense. This will be for notes mostly.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If possible 1080p 30FPS low settings. I don't really know if this is possible though.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Type-C please. A nice keyboard if possible. Bluetooth would be nice but is not a requirement. I have an SSD lying around provided the laptop has a space for it. I would like the laptop to be upgradeable so that I could add more RAM or storage as my needs require.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thanks for your help everyone. I've done my best to look through what I can find but without much luck. I'll mostly use this for notes in class and will be carrying it everyday.

Costco Gaming Laptop from ~$825 to ~$999

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:57 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Max preferably under $900, but can go up to $999 if worth it. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Don't need/care about battery life, give me those good specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not at all. The thing can be 1000 pounds for all I care

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux?

    Windows 8 or 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, want to model in programs like revit and general estimating programs. Also need to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and possible sony vegas. And Yes, I want to be able to run Feed The Beast, Dayz, Rust, and maybe some other games at a higher framerate. And I use bluestacks because I don't have a smartphone.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Dayz and Feed The Beast (modded minecraft) at the smoothest and highest quality possible. Also would like to play Arma 2 and maybe Arma 3 if I can, Primal Carnage, and possible overwatch in the future if I can bring myself to buy another copy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard is a important. I also need this laptop to last, so the highest reasonable build quality would be good. Also, I need space for about 3000 mp3 files, and a fair chunk of space for downloaded 1080p movies, etc.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

And the most important part - It has to be a laptop that costco sells, within the price range. I don't know anything much in depth about hardware, but your help is much appreciated!

I was looking at these https://www.costco.com/laptops.html?computer-type=gaming-laptop&refine=ads_f34501_ntk_cs%3A%22Gaming+Laptop%22%7C

Looking for a cheap HDMI-out laptop for my father

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 08:21 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally, sub-$200 (USD), but whatever is available.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My father occasionally travels for work, but otherwise it will be sitting under a TV with a wireless keyboard/mouse hooked up. As long as it is adequate for his uses, I'll take whatever.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • List which programs/games you desire to run. The most graphically intensive thing he runs is Hearthstone.

    • Any specific requirements? HDMI-out is a must

Basically, Hearthstone's gradual feature creep has resulted in the game chugging very hard on my father's current hooked-up-to-TV desktop, and I'd like to replace it with something that will run better and is portable (as he travels for work on occasion). He really only uses the computer to save photos from his camera, play Hearthstone, and watch Netflix, so something fairly bare-bones should fit the bill, provided it has HDMI-out.

    Looking for durable refurbished laptop

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Under $800-ish refurbished or new, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Just want a standard laptop form factor, and all the specs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight: somewhat important, thinness not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 pro, but if I have to upgrade (from 7, or from 10 home) that is not a problem.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14", or around that. No larger than 15.x", no smaller than 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not doing anything graphically intensive. Do want to be able to run VMs.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Several things:

    1. Built for durability (but not necessarily ruggedized).
    2. Ability to have a HDD and SSD at same time. If the laptop only supports one HDD, an optical drive will do, as I can get an optical drive to 2.5" adapter. I don't need both HDD and SSD to be included in the initial purchase. I don't care what form factor the SSD support is.
    3. A quad core Intel (i5 or i7) CPU. Looking for true quad core, not dual core with Hyperthreading. Should have good support for virtualization. Hardware crypto would be a plus as well, but I can live without it.
    4. Support for at least up to 16GB or RAM, and should come with at least 8.
    5. Wireless 802.11ac, or the ability to replace the wireless card with something that supports ac. This is my least important requirement.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I used to use a Dell Latitude E64xx at a previous job. I really liked the build quality of it. I am also a big fan of Dell's documentation (specifically, they have really good disassembly/reassembly instructions). I would like to stick with Dell for this reason, but it is not a hard requirement. I value good documentation more than I value ease of disassembly. Also, as much as I'd prefer to have a quad core, if that particular requirement is asking too much, a dual core will suffice.

x230t would be the nice if it had a larger screen. I think something like a ThinkPad Yoga 460 would do well, I do want 8 to 16 GB of RAM. What type of laptops would be similar? I was looking at Surface Books and HP Spectre but after finding out the RAM is soldered I am not super enthused about those options.

    Canada - $1000 CAD - University Student/Gaming

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:40 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

Can go up to $1100 CAD, but prefer to be at 1k or below. Canada (ps: not all amazon.com laptops can ship to my location)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs for the money with decent battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it isn't a concrete block, I'm fine with anything.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might be using CAD in the future. I plan on playing games such as Fortnite, CS:GO, LoL, Terraria/Minecraft.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Listed some games above. I prefer low-medium settings so I can maintain a constant 60 fps.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Ethernet/LAN port, HDMI/DisplayPort, audio and mic jack.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

All I really want is an SSD + Hard Drive for Windows loading times and a GPU (something like a GTX 1050?).

I found this little gem but it doesn't ship to my location :(

Looking for a thin, light gaming laptop with good specs for college

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 07:05 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $900-$1250 USD

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm looking for something as thin and light as possible that still has good specs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Looking for something that can run CSGO, Rainbow Six, PUBG without problems

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

For CSGO it should run at high settings and high FPS. For Rainbow Six and PUBG I just want it to be comfortable to play, I don't care about having really high settings and FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want a high build quality and something that will last a while. Touch screen and fingerprint are not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I looked at the Razer Blade Stealth and loved the design, weight, and size, but the specs were too low for the price. Something with a similar form to the Razer Blade Stealth but with better specs would be great.

15.5in or prefferably bigger | PT | Ideally, under €1000: worse case scenario, under €2000

    Posted: 31 Mar 2018 06:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

I would like to get one for at most around €1000; but I'm willing to get closer to €2000 if the lower price options all have dealbreakers. I'm in Portugal.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I would rather not have to buy another laptop for many years; so performance, build quality, and repairability/upgradability, are all among the top priorities; I do have a limited budget though, so bang-for-the-buck does need to be factored in. Good battery life would be nice to have, but most of the time I'll be using it plugged in.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't care about thinness; and weight is not all that important as long as it's not too heavy to carry from the bed to the table and back a couple times a day, and as long as it won't break my back or rip the straps on the rare occasions where I'll be carrying it on a backpack for a little while (and laptop+charger, plus little things, like a headphone and a mouse, won't be too heavy for the overhead thing on airplanes), I guess it will be alright.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Linux is a priority (alternatively, Win7 is also acceptable. But are there any good laptops still being sold nowadays that don't got a processor blacklisted by Microsoft for using Windows Update with Win7?)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

The bigger the better; but I'm willing to tolerate down to around 15.5in if the rest of the package is worth it.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Blender (modeling, rendering, video editing etc), Gimp, maybe some stuff for messing with audio; and Firefox with way too many tabs open, in the 3 digits; messing around with Unreal Engine 4. I'm not sure what games I'll get; X-Plane, Kerbal Space Program, maybe some old shooters, perhaps Trackmania Nations Forever, Nitronic Rush, Portal 2, maybe APB:R if they're still open; I'm not really sure, I'll need to see what will run on Linux if I'll use Linux, how much money I'll have left, take a look at stuff that has come out more recently etc; if I can get something that can handle VR decently it would be great, but getting 60fps on older titles is more than enough.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

1080p @60fps; it doesn't need to be the highest quality settings, but at least giving a taste of what the highest settings would look like without harming playability.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Numpad: essential (preferably of the type that has both period and comma keys, but that's not essential)

Durable: essential (I need it to last many years)

Cheap to repair: essential (a little less essential, with great durability, but still good to have)

Easy to upgrade: essential (I'll probably have to settle for something a little less than ideal specs-wise, so it would be great to be able to make things a little less worse over the years)

Good speakers: while not essential, it would be great to have (I'm a sucker for bass)

Good screen; decent colors, no banding on gradients, good range of viewing angles, very little ghosting (pixels can switch from full black to full white and viceversa quickly) etc: essential

Large storage: essential (I'm a bit of a hoarder; 2 big disks would be ideal to allow for some redundancy)

At least 8gb of RAM: essential (if it doesn't add much to the cost, I would like to get at least 16gb)

LAN port: sorta essential (I'll have to buy a USB adapter if it doesn't have one)

Card reader: nice to have, but not essential More than just 1 USB port: essential

1080 display: essential (higher resolutions will probably hurt performance and price without giving me much more added benefit)

NVidia graphics card: is it still essential for compatibility and performance on linux to use a NVidia card? If yes, then it's essential.

    Dedicated graphics card: essential

Hardware accelerated dual-screen capability: not 100% essential but close

Brazilian ABNT2 keyboard would be ideal, Portugal's Portuguese keyboard acceptable; English/international keyboard tolerable

Multi-keypress keyboard (I forgot the proper name, being able to press several keys at once and have all of them recognized): essential

    Multi-touch touchpad: nice to have

SSD: not a priority, but having room to add more storage devices would be nice

    Headphone/speakers port: essential

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've only had desktops my whole life, all built from parts, but now I'll have to spend a while with just a laptop; this will be my first laptop. I tried using a few different laptop picking sites, but I'm a bit overwhelmed, they don't seem to agree, I'm not sure if they're covering everything that needs covering; and I haven't been following the hardware scene all that closely in recent years, so in some aspects I'm not even sure if they're giving good suggestions. After sticking with WinXP till Windows Update stopped covering it, then Win7 till now; I would like to take the opportunity to jump to linux if it will work for me; after all the shit Microsoft pulled, I feel uncomfortable even being in the same room as a Win10 machine, and Win8 is a bit of a joke; I would rather not waste money on a Win10 or Win8 license if I have the choice. My usage will be pretty intense most of the time; I'll be on the computer for most of the day and will often leave stuff running over night; so hardware that will fail with 24/7 usage is not acceptable. Unless there is something with the build quality of those Mars rovers that kept going for many years beyond the intended mission time, I won't be using it to mine cryptocurrencies; but once in a while I might leave it running with the cpu and/or gpu close to maxed out rendering some stuff with Blender or testing some random intensive stuff with Python or UE4 over night; and I'll probably frequently max out whatever RAM it got, so having only SSDs that will quickly get worn out if used for swap/page file would be bad; and since I'm on a limited budget, the extra cost of the SSD would probably be better spent getting a bigger HDD or elsewhere.

Oh, and if I'm gonna go with linux, it would probably be good if the CPU has virtualization capabilities to let me run Win7 in a VM for stuff that won't be compatible with Linux with less impact on the performance, right?
