Apple Officially Discontinues Its AirPort Wireless Routers

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:57 AM PDT

    From Bloomberg News:

Apple Inc. is discontinuing its line of AirPort Wi-Fi routers after not updating the devices for about five years.

The routers let Macs, iPhones, iPads and products from other companies connect to the internet wirelessly. Apple had three versions -- the AirPort Extreme, which worked over greater distances, a cheaper and smaller unit called AirPort Express, and a version that could store files called the AirPort Time Capsule.

The company plans to sell the remaining inventory, a spokesman said Thursday.

Bloomberg News reported more than a year ago that Apple had abandoned development of the routers. The products were a slim part of Apple's revenue and their demise won't have a meaningful impact on the company.

Many phone and cable companies provide Wi-Fi connections with their internet services. Netgear Inc. and D-Link Corp. also make wireless routers.

Apple rarely discontinues product categories. The last line to be dropped was external computer monitors, and Apple has already said it would go back to designing its own in the near future.

Cheap mesh or high powered router for four floor townhome?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:36 PM PDT

The fios gateway router just isn't cutting it in my four floor townhouse. Even placing it on the second floor in the most open space, I cannot get a good signal on the top floor.

I'm looking at two options: either an entry level mesh network: https://m.staples.com/tenda-nova-mw6-ieee-802-11ac-1-14-gbit-s-wireless-access-point-nova-mw6/product_IM12JT364

Or a high quality router to either use standalone or as an access point: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-RT2600AC-Wi-Fi-Gigabit-router/dp/B01N5MPTG1

The house has cat5 wiring, so a second router/ap can be placed in any room. It would be preferable if I could use a single SSID for the home network. I also own a MacBook, and would like to do wireless backups with time machine. What would you recommend?

Conflicting SNR and attenuation values on ADSL modem - what do they mean?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:43 PM PDT

Today I got a new broadband. I moved to a peripheric area of my city and the new home area isn't covered by the old ISP.

My internet download speed should be 15mbps and 1 mbps upload (Yes I live in Africa). I'm getting regular upload speeds, but my download speed won't go over 200kbps.

I suspect that the house cabling might be the problem, but SNR values are confusing and I can't figure it out. In my understanding, they are conflicting.

    Are those SNR values ok?

Is this a modem configuration problem?

2 pcs and a phone are connected to the modem and getting the same speedtest results (slow downloads, regular uploads)

    Changing from CenturyLink to Charter

Moving and CenturyLink isn't offered to where I'm moving. So Charter is my next choice. What are some good options for router and modem? Looking at the Motorola mg 7550. Let me know if this is a good option or could there be a better route to go. Thanks

Any useful Windows program or script for hard-reset usb modem?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:49 PM PDT

I have a 4G Modem that doesn't wake up when the computer sleeps. I have to physically unplug it / plug it back in and it works perfect.

In the past I used microsoft's x64 DEVCON utility with a bit of success. But in Windows 10 now, I can't get the script to turn off the usb-modem. The devcon script is able to remove the usb modem, but the modem lights still stay on, so a hard-reset is obviously not occurring... scratching my head.

    Which is the best choice..

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:46 AM PDT

I'm redoing my home network today, but I cannot decide which of the two setups is the best.

    Currently running 4 vlans

    • homelab (nucs and Synology)
    • homenetwork (laptops, phones, appletv etc)
    • mgmt (usg, usw, uap, cloudkey)
    • guest (wifi)

I currently have USG -> us860w(1)-> us860w(2). All the home stuff (UAP, Apple TV, ps4) is connected to the first switch. And all home lab equipment (nucs, Synology) is connected to the second switch.

Because the usg has 2 lan ports I'm thinking of connecting the second switch to the second lan port of the usg. So all the homelab equipment Is connected to lan2 and physical separate.

NOTE: There will be some vlan routing between homelab and homenetwork. Because Plex is running on a nuc in homelab.

What do you guys think will me the best setup

    Need help with powerline adapter

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:46 PM PDT

I bought a powerline 1200 AV2 adapter from Trendnet after reading good reviews about it from pcgamer. I cannot get the 2 adapters to pair. The power and ethernet lights are on, but the powerline lights are not. I have tried pairing as well as factory resetting and connecting them without the pairing sequence. Nothing seems to work. When I unplug and replug the adapters the powerline light stays on for about 3-5 seconds before turning off. There is little to no information available on the internet about how to use these products, as I understand they are supposed to relatively simple to set up. I have tried for the past 2-3 hours to research and use process of elimination to find out the problem and have not found anything. Plugging the 2 adapters into different outlets in different parts of the house, as well as in the same room did nothing. Any help would be much appreciated.

Looking for a two AP system

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:12 PM PDT

I am exploring replacing my network setup. I have two Ethernet drops so mesh isn't needed. I am looking for simplicity. I currently have UBNT and while I am happy with the performance when something goes sideways it can be tougher to fix. I am out of town more often lately so can leave the family hosed. I do not use the advanced feature of UBNT that I thought I would, VLANs and the like.

Initially I have looked at Orbi but open to other options. Again simplicity is key here. Only thing I need is dynamic port forwarding with no-ip support preferred.

    Thanks folks

    Upgrading our "network"?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:59 PM PDT

Let me start off with, I'm a broke teenager who's headed to college in 4 months. So yes, I'm on a budget.

I'm trying to help my parents/siblings/me while I'm here. If the answer ends up being, "keep what you have", I'm happy with that. But I found it time to ask.

    We use Spectrum.

Wired in, I get 90 mbps down and 12 mbps up. But my sister, also wired in gets 140ish down and same up. Wifi with my phone touching the router gets 130 mbps 5ghz and 50 at 2.4ghz.

They all seem pretty good. Mine is a bit lower probably due to old cable.

My problem is, both my sisters live in rooms opposite the router. They get 25 or less 2.4ghz and like 7mbps 5ghz. Both of which barely run their firesticks or phones. The firesticks take 1-2 minutes to turn a show on and will buffer throughout.

Is this the best bet? Here's a picture of the modem/router. https://imgur.com/a/N6OoWre

I know there's all these $400 routers, but I have no idea if they'd help or how they work with our setup.

    Thanks for any help.

    Need advice/recommendations

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:34 PM PDT

I've upped my budget for what I'm willing to spend on 3 items total to $300 max but I'd like if I could keep it at $200.

I have fast Ethernet at most at home. Usual speeds are around 70Mbps but it's rated for 100.

I'm ok with used items so if I can get a pretty badass used Firewall/VPN I'd be satisfied with that. Same applies to the switch and AP.

Switch with 8 Ethernet ports, PoE (preferably PoE+, managed

Hardware VPN/Firewall with no licensing requirement. The more robust the better. I don't know what VLAN and IPv6 are but I've been told they're good to have. I'll learn about these.

AP - something that supports 2.4ghz and 5ghz and will be powered by the PoE/PoE+ port from the switch.

    Thanks in advance

    Coaxial Cable Removal Question

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:35 PM PDT

I recently purchased a house and the coax job is a cluster f***. Here is a picture. What would be the easiest way to determine which one of these lines runs to where I have my modem/router? I want to remove all of the unnecessary cables. We don't have TV so I really only need the one line. I was guessing I would just disconnect until I lose internet, but wanted to see if there is a more efficient way.

Can I run internet and home phone over the same cat5e cable?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:02 PM PDT

So my house is wired for coax and cat5e, and setting up a router with a few APs is easy enough...

However, I have a home phone provided by my ISP. The home phone modem is connected to the coax, then has a rj11 out. This goes to the hub that came with the house, and from the hub, two of the cat5e cables, take the phone line to two different rooms.

I'm wondering if I can grab a couple of splitters and have both internet and telephone run up the same line, so I can have the phone and an AP connected to the same cat5e outlet.

    So...

    Modem>router>cat5e in splitter>switch>cat5e #1>AP via a second splitter

    And

Phone modem>rj11 in splitter with cat5e above>switch>cat5e #1>phone via second splitter

Does this even make sense? Lol.

    Any input would be great.

I could simply upgrade my current router to one with mu-mimo and I'd probably be fine with adding an AP on the second floor, but i like the idea of going with edge router and couple unifi AP lites.

    Thanks.

Need help with my home network

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:56 PM PDT

So I have this very annoying problem when I game on my xbox where my ping will shoot up randomly and I figured out its because of me playing on wifi. The thing is I only have 2 ethernet cables that are fed to this room and one is to my computer and the other is to my dads computer. Is there a device that lets me plug in an ethernet cable and lets me plug in 3+ more cables into it? basically giving me wired connection for more devices lol? Sorry if that doesnt make a lot of sense.

    Home networking packet routing

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:50 PM PDT

Will the packets generated by a remote desktop server / client setup both connected to a powerline access point be routed internally to that sub-network or bounced down the powerline, to the router and back up?

Is there a way to observe this in action, either way? I dont want to hammer the limited capability of the powerlines, but would love to abuse my in-socket adptor.

I am using a TP link AV500 set.

    Cheers

I set up crossover wired cable throughout the building from jack to patch panel, but everything still works. Should I remove them from the patch panel and turn it into straightthrough?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:07 PM PDT

I have the patch panel with B and the jacks with A using cat 6 cable.

From there I have straighthrough from the modem/router combo to the patch panel and on the other end straight through from the jack to the computer.

Also, this isn't technically home networking, but it's a home converted to a business. AT&T sold the owner on two modem/router combo things saying it would be faster. I've literally never heard of this. Previously, we just had one modem -> router -> patch -> switch + computers + backups and everything was on one network. I haven't done much research, but figured I'd toss it in this question too since I'm asking. They wanted half the computers on one modem and half on the others. Would I just do that and add a switch or something to em all so that they all can still communicate and share files?

2000 sqft two floor house - upstairs wifi issues - best option?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:54 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Recently moved into a larger house. Almost 2000 sqft and two floors.

I have spectrum 100 Mbps internet and have been facing consistent issues with wifi connectivity and speeds in the upstairs bedrooms. Currently using the spectrum modem + wifi box which is placed in the living room downstairs.

I have been looking online for solutions and three options that often come up are:

    • Wired ethernet drop upstairs + ubiquity unify AP

    • wifi mesh (eero wifi mesh v2)

    • MoCa over coax that I have spotted in some rooms upstairs. Not sure, if it is still connected properly.

Regarding our usage, its mostly regular browsing and netflix (in 3 rooms) with occasional Xbox (living room) so nothing too crazy.

Which would be the most effective option based on cost and performance? I do not consider myself to DIY-friendly so would probably need pro help.

Thanks in advance for all comments and responses.

    Options for Parental Controls?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:52 AM PDT

I've got a Linksys EA6400, which I have to say has the most garbage router interface I've ever met. Like, if the UI weren't actually hostile to people who don't download their app on their smartphone, and let me deal with it programmatically, otherwise the router is fairly decent.

But my big problem is that the parental controls Do. Not. Work. I'm on what it says is the most current version of the firmware (1.1.40.184085), but I can shut off internet access to everyone, or nobody. Like if I go to the parental controls and say "block access at certain times" it says it's going to, but then it doesn't.

Needless to say, I'm looking for a solution that actually works. I've considered using something like a Raspberry Pi or an old laptop as the actual router, and then just turning my wifi router into an uplink because it's really too stupid to be anything but an access point.

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money if I can help it. If something was amazing and the best ever with all the bells and whistles, I could see spending up to ~$200, but I'd prefer to keep things <$50.

    My priorities here are:

    1. It actually works.
    2. Speed. I don't want to introduce a lot of latency. We stream Netflix a lot, and I occasionally enjoy playing the online video game.
    3. Cheaper the better.
    4. Programmatic access. If I can run a cronjob that will update stuff, turn things on and off, etc. I'm totally down with that.

Are there any good off the shelf solutions out there like this that are relatively inexpensive? Or do I have to choose between expensive and home grown?

    Combo Router/Modem vs Separate Router

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:37 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

Currently I am using the combination router/modem provided by my ISP (AT&T). I live with my family and the house has several things connected to the wifi (at least 10 devices) and two devices connected via Hardline. On my hardline device (my PC) a speed test only clocks in at 12 mbps download and 2.3 mbps upload. I stream frequently, luckily Im able to manage but sometimes either the game I play lags or the stream quality becomes poor.

Would purchasing a new router with better specs increase the performance of my internet given my situation? If not what would you suggest to increase my internet speeds? Running an Ethernet cord from the combo unit is possible but a;so inconvenient. If the router would be beneficial what router would you all suggest?

VPN sometimes goes unresponsive after restart

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:50 AM PDT

Hey guys. I hope this is the correct subreddit.

I have a VM running on my server, running Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS that is basically routing our Internet through a VPN. I'm currently using OpenVPN with ExpressVPN, and set the DHCP option on our router so that the VM would become our default gateway.

It's been working great, except for one problem. Sometimes, the connection drops. That's understandable, we're in China, they send TCP RST packets all the fucking time, right? So I use resolv-retry infinite with keepalive 10 60 so it would reconnect on its own. However, when the initialization completes after the connection drop, OpenVPN is unresponsive. What I mean by this is, I cannot ping Google on the VM. Since I can't ping Google on the VM, every device in our household lose Internet access. (Remember, we're in China, and iptables is set up so that it only allows the connection to go through the VPN tunnel.)

The only way of fixing the problem is to manually remote in and run sudo systemctl restart openvpn, which solves the problem after a minute or so, but is rather tiresome. Yes, persist-tun is already disabled, after I realized OpenVPN cannot resolve the IP if the faulty tun0 was up.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Is there any other setting I need to tweak?

WIFI connection drops 30 seconds into video calls on the nose, but stays on after reconnecting. Where to even start debugging?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:32 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Title kind of covers it, when I start a video call on Google Hangouts or Slack, 30 seconds into the call, my device's internet will freeze until I disconnect from the internet, and reconnect. After reconnecting, it stays on strong. This happens with any device connected to my WIFI. It's been years of doing this, on many different ISP's. I'm just so accustomed to swapping from my 2.4 -> 5 Ghz network right at 30 seconds to maintain the call, but I just realized how weird it is that I have to do it all the time.

Where should I even begin to look to solve this?

How to use a server running Ubuntu Server to serve static content?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:59 AM PDT

I'm trying to convert my server running Ubuntu Server 16.04 into router such that it can serve some files to devices connected to it through Ethernet. I am using Nginx to serve the files at 0.0.0.0:8000. I am also using dnsmasq as a DHCP server running on one interface.

    Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file.

auto eno1 iface eno1 inet dhcp auto enp6s0f0 iface enp6s0f0 inet static address 196.168.20.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 255.255.255.255

    Here's my /etc/dnsmasq.conf file:

    listen-address=127.0.0.1 listen-address-196.168.20.10 interface=enp6s0f0 dhcp-range=enp6s0f0,196.168.20.100,196.168.20.200,12h server=8.8.8.8

I've added the following route to my iptables:

    iptables -t nat PREROUTING -p tcp -i enp6s0f0 -j DNAT --to-destination 0.0.0.0:8000.

    My /etc/resolv.conf is:

    nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 8.8.8.8

I think my configurations are correct according to how I understand my goal should be achieved. However when I connect to the server from a device, I get an IP address in the correct range using ethernet, but I cannot access the content running on Nginx. When I run curl 196.168.20.XXX:8000 I get the error curl: (7) Failed to connect to 192.168.20.XX port 8000: Connection timed out.

How do I actually achieve this?
