    Home Networking 4K over Ethernet

    Home Networking 4K over Ethernet

    4K over Ethernet

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:38 PM PDT

    Hey all.

I need to run a 4K HDCP 2.2 compliant signal over ethernet.

The run isn't terribly long, maybe 15 feet, it's just the conduit wouldn't fit an HDMI cables plug.

We currently have dual Ethernet cat6 ran, and I have one passive HDMI receiver and sender hooked up.

I am having zero issue passing a 1080p signal. But for example my FireTV 4K results in no signal on my TV.

Is there anyway to do this passive? And remain HDCP 2.2 compliant? I really don't want to introduce having to power a receiver and sender on both ends.

Links to equipment would be helpful, thanks so much!

    New Home Networking Setup planned

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 06:10 PM PDT

    Hey All,

I'm moving somewhere new and I am trying to plan out what to use with my home network. The place I'm moving into will for some reason not require me to have a modem, they advertise that I only need a router to receive internet access, so that's one less piece of equipment to buy. I will have a 500 Mbps up/down package with them.

    Devices

    • PC over ethernet
    • 2 Laptops over 2.4/5ghz wireless
    • 2-3 current gen consoles over 2.4/5ghz wireless or ethernet, not sure yet
    • 2x Chromecast over 2.4/5ghz wireless

So in total, I'm looking to be using about 3, maybe 4 devices over ethernet, and the rest over wireless. The place isn't big, maybe about 850 square feet, and I'm looking to cover it with AC wireless.

What do you guys think I should purchase to build out a good, reliable, quick network?

    Thanks!

Faster speeds using subnet and DHCP instead of bridge mode for router?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:25 PM PDT

    Hey y'all,

I was testing out a new router I just bought to bring faster wireless to my room. I originally set it up as its own subnet and DHCP and made sure it wasn't interfering with other IPs and I was getting around 90 Mbps download speeds. I read online that I should instead set it up as a bridge and use it as a wireless access point instead for my gateway. I set that up and I only got 70Mbps download speeds. Why is it slower as a bridge vs having it as it's own subnet? If you connect directly to the gateway on WiFi, you can get 100+ Mbps speeds. It makes sense because my switches are going through 100 Mbps caps, but how come the same set up but just different settings results in slower speeds? Connection times were all tested wireless on the router using my laptop so it's not a case of wired is faster than wireless.

TLDR: Why is having my router as a bridge icing me slower speeds than having my router set up as a subnet w/ DHCP?

Cannot access some local IP via WAN and no internet.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:38 AM PDT

Hi there. For some reason i cannot access local IP (192.168.1.x) while in my local network using wifi, it does work with a wire tho. I started noticing this when my internet connection stopped because there is a problem with my provider.

I put some because i DO can access 192.168.100.10, an address my router with DDWRT uses for a NGINX webserver.

    What can i do?

    Thanks!

Gaming/voip Connection timeout diagnosis - What's causing the problem?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:39 PM PDT

The context is a small home network with 3 or 4 users (12 ish devices): I would like the ability to see the kind of traffic going through the modem/router that is causing my connection to time out, at the time of timing out. My connection drops out in online games and VOIP applications once every 2 or 3 minute, and I suspect it has to do with one of the users' devices' applications sending traffic that causes overload/time out at the router/modem - the reason for this suspicion is that these dropped connections don't happen when a certain user on the network isn't home, only when they're home using one of their devices. I wish to be able to monitor traffic at the router at least at the time of dropping connection, so that I can at least point to the culpable device. Moreover, I wonder if it's also possible to deduce the application being used (the reason why particular software may be at fault is because the network and devices have been the same for a long time, but the dropping out issue only started occurring recently, and only when that one user is using the internet). What is the best way to go about setting up WireShark for this capability, if possible in the first place? Any other advice is also freely welcome.

Router is preventing ONE user from remotely accessing my Plex server

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Some quick background: the user having issues lives next door to me and we both switched to a new fiber provider around the time this started happening, I also switched to a new router.

I have 10+ users who are having no issues at all connecting to my Plex server, but this one user is unable to see it. I was working with the ISP and they suggested I bypass the router and plug the server directly into the wall. I did that and the user was able to see and connect to the server. Note that the other users didn't lose access during this time.

Unfortunately, I can't switch back to my old router because I gave it away. My old and new routers are both Asus and I set the new one up identically to my old one, as far as I know at least. I turned the router's firewall off, I have the correct ports forwarded, my server's firewall is off. I think I've reached my limit on networking knowledge because I can't figure out how my router is only blocking one user. The only unique thing about this user is that we're on the same ISP, and our switches are right next door to each other. I've been emailing with an admin at the ISP for a few days and he's stumped too (he's also a Plex user so he is knowledgeable there).

I'm happy to provide any information anyone needs to help me out. I'll try my best to get what you're looking for. Thanks!

edit: I posted this in /r/PleX as well and tried a few things that you could reference.

    Ping Tracking Question

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:36 AM PDT

    Hi all,

every 3 minutes or so when i'm playing Fortnite, my ping increases from 40 ms to 250ms for 3-5 seconds and I lag really bad and start teleporting everywhere.

Internet Download speed is 150 Mbps, I've played many games before at weaker internet connection and I still play other games with my current internet connection without experiencing this weird change in ping. It happens to other users playing the same game in my house.

I want to investigate if the problem is with my router, pc, fortnite, or internet connection.

Any suggestions to the best program that can record my ping over time and make a plot of it?

I used pingplotter, but it's a pretty bad program. It doesn't let me zoom into the plot or print the plot. It's also confusing, it says that my ip keeps changing which is causing increase in latency. I don't understand how or why my ip would be changing!

Best way to hook up two (2) switches on a home network.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:11 PM PDT

I upgraded my Internet speeds to gigabit. I bought two (2) gigabit switches at a garage sale. These are Netgear five port switches GS105. What is the best way to help these up? Should I hook each one of them to the router the airport five on the switch? Or should I only hook up one switch to the router and then pay you back the other switch from the other switch? Or is it the same thing? LOL thanks in advance

500mb wifi connection for 30+ devices over 3 houses. How do I do it?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:20 PM PDT

So there are 15 of us living in 2 houses that have 3 levels (ground, middle, top). In-between the houses we have a big warehouse that we do lots of events in and can travel between the two houses through this.

We have a 500mb fibre business line in one of the houses with 3 extenders spread around for everyone. The connection naturally keeps getting bottlenecked with everyone's phone and laptop being connected almost all of the time.

We don't have a lot of budget but I was hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself could give us some advice on what equipment we could get so that everyone would be able to get a stable and fast connection everywhere. During our events there may be even more people connected too.

    Any ideas?

    Wifi question

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:08 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to setting up connections and have a pretty basic question. So how should I go about setting up 2 connections in a house, so me and my roommate have 2 different personal wifi connections? Will we need 2 modems and 2 routers? How should this work?

    Help simplify please

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 12:01 PM PDT

I've been reading this board, ubiquity, and Google wifi board for 3-4 hours now and feel no closer to an answer.

    Situation:

current router: outdated Motorola surfboard with a shitty off brand plug in extender. Current provider: cox, 100mbps max, no other options in our area. House size: 4500 square foot, 2 story with a basement. Total wifi capable devices around 25-35.

    Needs:

Full coverage wifi, multiple access points, hardwired in a few spots throughout the home. My current extender requires manually swapping to it to use it, I want seamless handoff from 1 access point to the next. I have no problem running cat 5 cables to anywhere in my house.

    Wants:

Monitoring or restricting what my children can see and do on the internet. I.e.: parental controls from my phone if possible.

    dont wants

I don't want to order 5 different things from 5 different companies that takes me a half day to set up. I understand there are multiple parts but would prefer to be able to order it on Amazon and have the stuff come from the same company.

Right now in my mind I have it down to google wifi (I like the parental controls and no fuss, and with an app on my phone, don't like the forced updates that have potential to screw things up), or ubiquity (I like its versatility, don't like how many things I need to buy or how overly complicated it seems to be)

    Any help? Please?

I'm on information overload. Cable Modem/Wifi Router Recommendations?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 11:19 AM PDT

I'm on information overload and could use some help. We just moved and set up service with Comcast, but we decided it would be better to buy our modem/router than pay the monthly fee. Here are the specifics:

    • We need a cable modem/wifi router. Together or separate doesn't matter as much as other criteria.
    • 400Mbps. I work from home part time and video conference with work at least once a week. Speed and connection is important.
    • w/ voice, but we don't really care about this as much.
    • Our new place is 900 sq. ft. in a building congested with wifi networks.
    • Security would be nice. Nothing is sensitive in nature, but I also don't want to be naive or ignorant that security matters.
    • Cost? Under $200 would be nice, but maybe that's naive? $300 is would be pushing the limit. Somewhere in between is what I'm guessing.
    • Easy to use and set-up would be nice. Having the ability to play around to learn more without breaking anything would also be nice.

I appreciate any recommendations and help. Thank you!

Did i just mess up and buy something not compatible with Vios?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 10:43 AM PDT

So i have verizion Vios and have one of those all in one routers. well to say the least it is really bad and reaches nowhere in my house. so i got frustrated today and went and bought a new router a ASUS RT-AC3200. I wanted something that would allow me to use a VPN and that would cover my whole house.

My problem is its not an all in one and has no Coax connection. What are my options, do i have to go find a all in one router to use? if so anyone have any siggestion of an all in one router that supports VPN's

    VPN Question - LAN

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 01:18 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have been getting interested in networking since the start of this year and the next thing i want to learn is VPN's.

From what i understand, some routers, Draytek, Ubiquity etc have a VPN server built in. Once that is set up, I can then connect to that remotely via a VPN client on my laptop.

Now i know this will make it so while remote, i am connected to the public IP of my router, and my internet traffic is routed through that public IP

One thing im wondering, will i be connected to the LAN also? So on the remote device, connected via the VPN, i could 192.168.1.1 and connect to my router's interface? Or i would see all computers/NAS on my home network? Is this possible with just a VPN setup?

    Appriciate any responses.

High latency and packet loss (Need help)

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 09:52 AM PDT

So recently I've been experiencing high latency and huge packet loss when gaming online on my PS4. Before 4 months ago, I used to have a very stable internet with low latency to all game servers (European servers) and no packet loss at all.

One day, I started getting lag spikes once every 10 mins or so (4000+ ms with huge packet loss), however, my average ping was 75 ms to the game servers which was good to me due to my location which is far from the game servers located in Germany and Ireland. I ignored those lag spikes, but 2 weeks ago my average latency increased to 97 ms beside the lag spikes and now it's 150+ ms with huge variation ranging from 150 to 250ms! I did a 15 mins trace route to a server in Germany and 8.8.8.8 using MTR. The results were shocking, I had a stable 20 ms with no packet loss through all local hops (which is what I used to have) but a high latency with huge variation, lag spikes and packet loss were observed in all hops outside my country. These results were the same for google's DNS and the German IP.

I contacted my ISP and they said that everything is running as it should and there is no problem whatsoever!! It seams that there is an issue with my ISP's connection to non-local servers. Could they be throttling my connection to certain servers? Could they be monitoring and tracking my connection and if so, does this effect my connection? What else could be happening?

Note: during tests and gaming, no devices were connected to the internet, my router's latency is <1ms and all my connections are wired. Also, it's not a server issue as I have this problem in 2 games I play (BF1 and Fortnite) and it's also affecting streaming videos when suddenly the video quality drops and then returns to it's initial quality thereafter.

Home cable modem - Replace a CBN CH7466CE

    Posted: 28 Apr 2018 03:16 AM PDT

Hi I'm in the process of switching to a better setup for my home network. I just bought a Mikrotik Hap ac2, to have a proper modem (ipsec, limit devices, proper networking...), and I was wondering if it was worth it to switch the modem completely to a Arris.

My ISP give me 200mb up, and I think 14 down, via cable to my flat. The current modem/router is a CBN CH7466CE, which, according to what I see in the admin interface gives me 24/4 channels. The modem doesn't seem like super quality, and I'd like to know what you would think if I'd switch to a 16/4 (ARRIS SURFboard SB6183)?

I would think that 16 channels down can still handle what I have in my offer pretty fine. But, from what I understood, to avoid congestion at peak time, it's better to have more channel ? (from information i gathered from reddit)

What are your thoughts on that?

    Cheers

Problem: Using Moonlight Game Streaming service with VPN.

I want to use Moonlight over the internet. I set up my devices, port forwarding etc... and it actually works without VPN.

But when I have to use VPN like Psiphon or Anonytun, I cannot connect to my host device and I have no idea why. Can someone help please? Thanks.

    WiFi Help

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:43 PM PDT

I am not sure if this is the place to ask this so if it incorrect could someone redirect me? Thanks

So I am a gamer, and obviously internet is important to me. Due to my modem's placement, I am unable to have a wired connection, so WiFi is the only way to go. The problem is that for as far as I can remember, my internet would always stop working, I have no idea why. My assumption is that maybe the game is causing the wifi to stop working? Please help! I can answer questions!

Proxy all traffic destined to a port to another address

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:30 PM PDT

Hello from the terrible world of cryptomining!

I'm testing out an application for a new coin and I think something funky is going on. I'm expecting all traffic to go from a dedicated box to one specific IP on one specific port, but something is off.

I was running a Wireshark capture to troubleshoot a connection issue and noticed some funky traffic headed to China. Since I segregate all of my IoT traffic on a separate VLAN and drop packets to China/Russia/etc via geofilter, so seeing this traffic on my regular VLAN was unexpected.

The traffic is coming from my miner, freshly imaged with Windows and software provided for the new coin. Seems like it's forwarding some of the traffic back where it's not supposed to go.

    Here's what I'm looking for:

I'd like to proxy all local traffic coming from that box destined to any IP on port TCP/46657 to a specific IP on another port. I'm not expecting to change any of the payload, just want to proxy the traffic.

Are there any applications you can recommend to accomplish this?

I tried to use netsh to add a forwarding rule, but it doesn't seem to accomplish what I want it to.

    netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenaddress=0.0.0.0 listenport=46657 connectaddress=10.100.44.10 connectport=8010
