Sunday Rant/Rage (Apr 15 2018) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:11 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Is Google ever going to address these blatant false and misleading apps?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 06:35 PM PDT

I dont play the game (Fortnite) but this is the number 1 trending on Play Store now with over 10k downloads for one app and over 50k on the other. How is this considered "Fair use" as this scumbag dev claims on the very well hidden section of the descriptions?

    LifeProTips app

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 09:55 AM PDT

So it's an Android app based on the subreddit we all love. LifeProTips. I liked the tips in that sub and thought why not create an app where one could browse endless tips on Android phone with a beautiful UI (in case you approve) and share on the go.

    Play Store Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sardiwal.lifeprotips

It's based on material design and shows each tip in a card with upvotes, self-text button (for more info about a tip), author name on the bottom. You can open the reddit page on long clicking the author name.

You can also save your favorite tips by bookmarking so that you can read it later offline.

Hope you guys like the app.

Android device/ROM patch level Security Research Labs SnoopSnitch audit thread

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 06:45 PM PDT

By now you've probably heard of the Security Research Labs (SRL) report about Android OEMs skipping patches while claiming to be up to the patch level in their updates.

SRL has released an app called SnoopSnitch which audits your device and shows which patches up to the claimed patch date were applied, and which weren't.

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to get a thread going so we can see honest various OEMs and ROM devs are being with us.

If you choose to participate, please reply with:

    • Device name and model number/variant, e.g. Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5
    • ROM and version, e.g. LineageOS 15.1
    • ROM claimed patch level
    • Patched (from SnoopSnitch)
    • Patch missing (from SnoopSnitch)
    • After claimed patch level (from SnoopSnitch)
    • Test inconclusive (from SnoopSnitch)
    • Not affected (from SnoopSnitch)

What do you do to secure your Android phone?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:53 PM PDT

I use Tor on my laptop, but do very little with my phone, besides Signal, checking 3rd party app permissions, and ensuring location data and facebook are as far from my phone as possible.

I love my Moto G4 but am considering replacing with an iPhone (SE or 7) because data privacy is extremely important to me, and ultimately I don't think I could ever have peace of mind while I'm forced to use a Google account to use my phone. Please prove me wrong! I would love to not have to buy an iPhone!

Tez, after the latest update, isn't allowing root and/or custom ROM users from using the app.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:01 AM PDT

I am using Dirty Unicorns 8.1 on my Nexus 6 and after updating the Tez app on April 6th, I can no longer sign-in to my account. I am using Magisk 16.3 and have tried Magisk Hide on Tez. That didn't work. My device is certified and passes SafetyNet. Is anyone else facing the same issue? Here's a screenshot

Edit: Google might have implemented a different root detection method, preventing the root/custom ROM users from using their service. Perhaps u/topjohnwu might be able to bypass this restriction some day.

I have this design in the play store in my OPPO Mirror 5 from the past few days. I don't have this in any of the other devices logged in with the same account. Did any of you get this design?

Don't Let the Fact That This Phone isn't Backed By a Big-Name Carrier Deter You - Review of Huawei Mate SE!

    Posted: 15 Apr 2018 04:51 PM PDT

Wish I had heard of this company before buying all these second hand Samung/Motorola phones through craigslist just to save money, when I can buy a comparable phone brand new for a price that is cheaper. This phone is just an improved version of the Honor 7X.

My review is based off replacing a Samsung Note 4 and my work phone is a Galaxy S7.

Battery: The battery life is superb on this. Seeing how my Note 4 had all this bloatware and these Samsung extras out of the box. The Note 4 couldn't even last through out the day with constant usage. This phone lasts through out the day, set it down without charging it for the night and it still has power. Battery life is about the same as the S7, though.

Design: Doesn't feel like a cheap, cricket phone. Feels like it has some weight, some heft to it. I am also impressed by the fingerprint technology on the back of the handset. It is much better and responsive then what the Galaxy S7 has. I never had to 'retry' my fingerprint as if it didn't register it.

Communications: Haven't noticed any difference in terms of call quality or signal. Yet, my carrier is AT&T. The only concern is that the phone doesn't support 5G Wi-Fi.

Camera. Unless something was wrong with my Samsung Note 4, this camera is much better than the Note, but similar to what the S7 has, or maybe even less.

Display: I can't tell if this is part of the android or part of Huawei, but there are animations in the display which are interesting. From where you can see the display brightness slider move automatically to where texts seem to 'bounce' when you scroll through them. There is little bloatware and I like the drawer design of the apps. Screen is also bigger than my Note 4.

Also some people state the charging cable is different, yet my cord that charges my samsung phones can charge this phone.

At the end of the day, this $200 phone can do everything a $1,200 phone can do.
