In 2018, when more than 50% of the worlds population still does NOT own a smartphone, we need a better smartphone recycling method to re-purpose old phones!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 05:00 AM PDT

Android has been around since 2008, and in the last 10 years, almost all of us have owned multiple smartphones. I have since owned many smartphones, and once these phones become old (older than 2 years), I put the latest LineageOS/ROM and give them away to people to extend the devices' life.

I'm sure we all have friends who have multiple iPhones/Android phones, sitting in their cupboards, turned-off, simple collecting dust, never to be used again. In another 5 years, most of us will have more phones with us than we'll know what to do with!

I feel there NEEDS to be a better recycling method on this planet where we can recycle our old phones and extend their lives, or simply re-purpose them.

What do you guys think? What could be the best way to recycle/re-purpose our old phones in today's world?

Last night my Pixel woke me up with a loud voice about how "my device may be compromised."

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 07:33 AM PDT

It scared the shit out of me. I blearily woke up and examined the device, but I couldn't figure out where the voice had come from or (since I had been sleeping) remember exactly what it had said. I had almost convinced myself that I had just imagined the voice, until my girlfriend asked me about it (and was able to confirm, this morning, that it said something like "Your device may be compromised.")

Eventually I opened Chrome. Chrome was displaying a message about how my device was compromised with all kinds of malware, and I needed to install an app in order to protect it.

I wish I had screenshotted the message. I did, however, take note of its URL (leads nowhere anymore, interesting information in the URL params though). The app itself was one of those "antivirus" malware apps - it was called Super Antivirus Cleaner, and was hosted on the Play Store. All the reviews either said "This app completely optimized my phone and sped it up 300%", or "This is a malware app, my phone is full of ads now; do not use." I reported the app to the Play Store.

My assumption is that a web site I had visited in Chrome (either gamespot or icy-veins) was hosting an ad service that redirected me to this malicious site.

How did the malicious site even keep Chrome awake for that long? There was at least an hour between the time I visited the web site, and the time it woke me up with the alarming message.

I really wish that Google would support add-ons for Chrome for mobile the way Firefox does. I have no idea why I was using Chrome in the first place - Android pushes you towards it, but as this experience shows, it really isn't all that safe to browse the web without Adblock turned on!

What are your thoughts, /r/android? Has this happened to anyone else?

[DEV] Texpert 7.0 released with lots of improvements (Promo Codes Inside)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2018 01:54 PM PDT

Hello everyone, Texpert 7.0 is official and with it come lots of awesome improvements and features! There have been a number of updates to this app and I feel that it is really maturing, so a lot of work has gone into making the app more efficient and smarter about how it handles data. Here are some of the headlining changes:

    • App setup process has been improved with a theme setup that takes place while messages sync in the background
    • The attachment bottom sheet has been rewritten to be a lot more efficient also has many bugs fixed
    • The app now uses ViewModels which essentially means data is loaded a lot faster and retained so it isn't reloaded all the time
    • Long pressing the send button or the attachment button present a new menu which allows adding a subject or sending a quick reply (this makes quick replies 100 times more useful)
    • There are now article previews for links that are sent so you can get a better view of what someone sent you
    • Conversation search now supports regex to make searching a lot more useful and helpful

So these are just some of the headlining changes, there are many more which have come recently and I still have a to-do list with more to come! That being said, I always love new ideas so if y'all have any cool ideas for features or improvements please let me kno.

Also as I said, I am really trying to fix as many bugs as possible so if you spot a bug please let me know by email (nick@nicknackdevelopment.com) or at /r/Texpert Thank You!

Finally, here are the promotion codes. Please make sure that when you use a code you also mark it as used.

    Thanks again!
