Games You Haven't Heard Of: Part 1

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 05:17 PM PDT

I decided to run through my games library and find games that are fun yet somewhat unknown/unpopular. Alas, it turns out that great games tend to be popular. So, I at least tried to avoid games that everyone has heard of. Of course, this means my list favors premium games. I also tried to avoid games with extensive media coverage...and probably failed.

Title: BombCats: Special Edition ($0.99, No IAP)
    Genre: Casual / Catapult
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.radiangames.bombcats
Description: A cute catapult game. Allows you to fling the projectiles even while they are mid-air, thus shifting the game slightly away from the precision/luck/planning towards reaction time. I found this to make the game less frustrating than traditional golf/catapult games. I'll note that the game items are over-powered. This is probably an artifact of the game's origins as a freemium game.

Title: Pixel Defenders Puzzle ($0.99, $0.99 IAP for extended content)
Genre: Casual / RPG / Puzzle
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.socialtitans.pdp
Description: Pixel Defenders Puzzle is a game about building armies by creating groups of matching tiles. Groups of 3 matches creates troops. Groups of 3 troops creating stronger troops. This sort of game has game has been done before, but this is one of the better incarnations of it.

Title: Adventure Bar Story ($2.94, IAP for premium currency :( )
    Genre: RPG / Store Management
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rideon.sakaba_eng
Description: Fight in dungeons to find ingredients, then cook those ingredients to make food. Food can be sold or used to provide experience and boosts to your fighters. This is a wonderful game with lovely mechanics. However, it is marred by infrequent crashing and by IAPs. Personally, I used save-scumming in order to buy recipes using in the initial free batch of premium currency, but the intended way to learn recipes is to make educated guesses or to talk to NPCs.

Title: Don't run with a Plasma Sword ($1.99 OR freemium/ad-supported)
    Genre: Action Runner
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.XperimentalzGames.drwap
Description: This is a standard side-scrolling endless runner, except without being endless and with bosses. If you like that genre, this is isn't a bad choice.

    Title: Frozen Gate (100% Free)
    Genre: RPG
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.frozengate_english.frozengate_english
Description: This is an RPG with an interesting combat system. Your party has 4 adventures, with each turn requiring you to rotate your parties to control who is fighting. This offers more strategy than you'd think. You don't need to grind, but fear of losing will probably tempt you to grind. The game is pretty punishing when you make an error, but not quite as disasterous as it feels. The author doesn't seem to care about proper device support, so expect the game's scaling to be broken or awful. I got lucky when I tried this game. This game gets repetitive and time-consuming, but for a while I found it strangely addictive.

    Honorable Mentions:
NightFall Lands: Free with IAPs. RPG. Had too much content. I got bored before I finished it.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pandulapeter.NightfallLands

War Games: ($2.99): Fun stuff. Dungeon raid did it better ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fireflame.dungeonraid ), but was too popular for this list.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.berad.wargames

Magica: ($3.99): A great game reminiscent of BattleHeart. However, Paradox Interactive is too well known to make my list. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paradoxplaza.imagicka

Spectral Souls ($10.99): A tactical RPG. A bit too popular to make my list. Kept me entertained for about a 100+ hours. Intermittently on sale. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hyperdevbox.spectralsouls

Fiz ($2.99): Management Sim. Like Kairosoft games. A bit too popular to make my list.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitbybitstudios.fiz

Blockee Story (Free with ads): A weird RPG/RogueLike...thing. Not sure how to describe this. An excellent game, but mostly included so I remember where I was in my games list when I stopped writing this post.

[Sale] Implosion: Never Lose Hope is $0.99/£0.89

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 06:26 PM PDT

Implosion: Never Lose Hope is on sale for $0.99/£0.89 from today until the 16th of April, down from $9.99/£8.99. One of the best games on mobile with a control system that is so simple but brilliantly executed.

The first chapter is free to play; if you like what you see the whole game can be purchased in-app. I rarely rave about mobile games but this is a fantastic offer for a great game.

5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 51)

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 05:01 AM PDT

Welcome back, fellow AndroidGamers ;) Let's get straight to the game recommendations, shall we!

Am I wrong about these games? Let's have a friendly discussion in the comments.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 51 weeks ago here.

The games games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's go!

BombSquad [Game Size: 232 MB] (free)

    Genre: Multiplayer / Bomberman-like / Party Game - Online

    tl;dr review:

With up to 8-player online and local multiplayer, a VR version, controller support, a large amount of game-modes and plenty of hilarious animations, BombSquad might just be the perfect party game to play with a few friends.

I really enjoyed playing the game again this week (played it first on Ouya back in 2013), and although the Android version has a high amount of ads, you can remove them through a $3 iAP, which also unlocks more game modes and more.

An easy recommendation, especially if you have a controller.

Will Hero [Game Size: 117 MB] (free)

Genre: Arcade / Casual - Offline

    tl;dr review:

Playable both in landscape and portrait mode, Will Hero is a visually pleasing casual arcade side-scroller with lots of character upgrades, skins, and even dungeons, all of which differentiates Will Hero from typical endless runners.

I've previously played another fantastic game by the same developers, The Little Fox, and Will Hero is just as fun and well designed.

Monetization happens mostly through incentivized video ads and iAP that enables us to unlock skill upgrades faster.

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Foolball [Total Game Size: 198 MB] (free)

Genre: Sports / Silly - Offline

    tl;dr review:

A silly singleplayer and local-multiplayer sports game where our objective is to get the fool (a jester) into the quidditch-like goal as the King watches us play the epic game of Foolball!

The game monetizes through forced ads that can be skipped after 5 seconds, and there's currently NO way to disable these ads through an iAP, which is my main complaint with the game.

Overall a neat but infuriating pixel-art game to play alone or with a friend.

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Bomber Friends [Total Game Size: 119 MB] (free)

    Genre: Action / Bomberman-like - Offline / Online

    tl;dr review:

A Bomberman version for mobile that has controller & Android TV support, 2-8 player multiplayer, as well as 300 singleplayer levels? Count me in!

The game concept is as fun as it has always been, controls work surprisingly great on touch, and with the added progression through character upgrades, there's a reason to keep playing too.

The only two downsides are that the progression system means you'll sometimes be "unfairly" matched in multiplayer, and that there is a high amount of ads unless you remove them through the $2 iAP.

    Google Play: Here

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Mafia Revenge [Total Game Size: 606 MB] (free)

    Genre: Shooter / Real-time PVP - Online

    tl;dr review:

A competitive 1vs1 PVP shooter where you sit in a car being controlled by your NPC-helper, as you shoot at your Mafia opponent in his/her own car.

The game reminds me a lot of Battle of Arrow, just in cars instead of on horseback, and I particularly liked that the game requires some actual aiming skill to be good at.

With that said, however, there have been several reports of cheaters at higher ranks, and the game is pay2progress/win, as you can unlock better weapons through chests bought for real life money.

If you're slightly interested, I'd still check it out, as the game is fun and very well made over all - just be aware of the potential issues at high ranks and iAP aspect.

Would you want me to start a paid game review series based on your choice?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 05:55 AM PDT

I already have quite a large collection of paid games and wanted to put it to a bit more use rather than just looking pretty in my library.

So, how it would work would be every week I select few paid games from the store with different genres and make a poll. Then you people tell me which one to play/make a review on. For the post itself, I was thinking maybe a 200-300 word writeup describing the pros and cons of the game.

I would love to hear suggestions regarding the idea.

GeForce Now on Android mobile - Thoughts?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 02:30 AM PDT

With the advent of mobile SoCs on par with the Tegra X1 (which powers the Shield TV 2017), namely the SD845, and desktop tools like Samsung Dex or any other USB-C to video out solution, getting Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming service running on non-Tegra Android devices would seem to be the next logical step to bring "PC gaming" to the masses and push the boundaries of what's considered possible on mobile (not to mention get around the cost barrier to entry of PC gaming).

While the Tegra X1 is capable of stunning visuals (see the Nintendo Switch), and theoretically the 845's Adreno 630 ought to be able to deliver similar results, there's still a notable lack of quality desktop-oriented games available on mobile. This deficiency is notable when it comes to furthering mobile desktop solutions like Dex, Project Linda et al as that remains on of the few significant drawbacks to moving one's workflow purely mobile. GeForce Now would handily address this.

To me this is an exciting prospect, but I would like to hear what others think about this sort of development. Would access to such a service be enough to get you to ditch your desktop or gaming laptop and move to a mobile-centric setup?

I've called for Nvidia's feedback on Twitter regarding this, and if you'd like to add your voice, feel free to piggyback on my tweet here: https://twitter.com/nickthaskater/status/984717994629541888?s=20

[Android] It's here but can you find it? - My first puzzle game

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 06:54 AM PDT

Hey guys, I released my first puzzle game, here on Play Store. It took me 2 months to develop the game and it's finally out. The game is about finding or making the word here in each level. There are total 50 levels in the game and each level has its own design and logic. The game is minimal and simple looking, while the levels require your brain to think something different and outside the box in each one of them.

The game begins simple, however, the difficulty increases with the level number. With all kinds of puzzles, the game requires you to think about several ways to solve the levels. Each level gives you 3 hints to help you if you get stuck.

I released it 2 days back and the reviews from my friends and users have been great so far. The game binds their interest and is very convenient to play anywhere anytime. Now, I wish to share it with you guys now and would like to receive any suggestions, feedback or criticism! It would help me a lot! I hope you all enjoy it. :) Thank you!

Quick question about Record Agarest of War

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 03:28 PM PDT

TL;DR - what does the star next to my save file mean?

I can't find the answer anywhere so I hope someone can help. I decided to get back into it after a 3 year hiatus and loaded up my save files. I know I got really far into it but I haven't completed the True ending. I have no idea how far I've actually gone in the game and there's some save files that have a star next to it. I'm not sure if thats the New game+ file or what. It's been a while and I don't remember much of what I did.

[DEV] Zarsthor — Arcade Space Shooter

    Posted: 13 Apr 2018 04:58 AM PDT

Hello, today I had released my 5th game, it's a simple asteroid space shooter, but not only, our hero decide go into galaxy adventure, story is more complicated than that, but I don't want to spoiler. To be honest it's pretty strange, and got some philosophical concept/future.

In-game we can buy upgrades, unlock new ships, we got 40+ gameplay levels and a lot more, we got levels with astronauts, levels with protecting planet, endless mode (with online scoreboard), we got various types of asteroids. Game don't got IAP, got ads (but they won't be spamming user).

Not sure how long it took me to make this game, I'm just 19 year old newbie, during developing Zarsthor (it's my 5th game) I got a break for developing other game + I got no time (school), game is made in Unity, C# + some JS (WebGL), game should run on All Androids 4.1 (in settings you can change controls, quality settings).

If you got any questions, feel free to ask, I will answer them all :-} Have fun.
