Is "Made with Unity" synonymous with "destroys your battery"?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 07:50 AM PDT

Everytime I see an interesting game that's made with Unity I usually get disappointed as Unity tends to overheat my phone and be really hard on battery life.

Is that a fair comparison or is it simply that some games that happen to use Unity also happen to be resource intensive?

Games You Haven't Heard of: Part 2

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 10:52 AM PDT

    Part 1

Well, it's time to run through more of my games library to find games that are fun yet somewhat unknown/unpopular.

    Title: Swap Heroes 2 ($1.99)
    Genre: Casual Turn-based RPG
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Savory.SwapHeroes2
Description: A simple little combat game. Kind of like a polished version of Frozen Gate (see part 1). A bunch of reviews complained that it's way too short, but I don't recall how true that is.

Title: Alien Star Menace (free w/ads)
    Genre: Tactical RPG
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tafc.pixelspacehorror
Description: A great tactical RPG. Just play it! Almost too popular to make this list, but free games have a higher threshold; I'm not sure why it's not more popular.

    Title: I am Level ($2.41)
    Genre: Pinball Platformer
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.SmilingBag.IAmLevel
Description: As promised, a game with only 100+ downloads (unless this post pushes it over the edge). This is a sort of cross between NightSky and Pinball. Personally, I don't like pinball games, but the exploratory nature of this game combined with the bite-sized rooms makes this game a lot of fun. Also available on Kongregate and Windows, but I recommend the mobile experience. I suspect the old-school graphics have prevented this game from reaching popularity, but it's actually a brilliant little game. The only honorable mention on this list which I didn't complete.

    Title: Battleship Lonewolf ($2.99)
    Genre: Real-time Space Combat
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tabascogames.battleshiplonewolf
Description: The author calls this a TD game, but I don't think the description fits. However, it's not twitch-based enough to qualify as a traditional space-shooter. Regardless, this is a cleanly designed mobile game. The average skirmish length is about 3 minutes, making this game a perfect distraction. However, the upgrade system gives the game a feeling of progression that keeps the game enjoyable during longer play sessions.

    Title: Arena Quest ($1.49)
    Genre: Clone of BattleHeart Classic
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gfactoriser.ArenaQuestRpg
Description: This is a premium game very similar to the original BattleHeart . Battleheart is 100% free and better in almost every way, but that's a high bar to reach. If you want a BattleHeart clone, this is one of the few premium options.

    Title: Heroes Paradox ($2.99)
    Genre: Clone of BattleHeart Classic
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.winterbleu.heroesparadox
Description: Another BattleHeart clone. This feels a bit more premium than Arena Quest. The difficulty/progression curve on this game is incredibly jagged, but this is otherwise a great game.

    Title: Codex of Victory ($4.49)
    Genre: Tactical combat
    Play Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inocoplus.victory
Description: An excellent tactical hexagonal combat game. An all-around high-quality game with few flaws. I strongly recommend this game. Pre-emptive warning: There is some required end-game equipment that doesn't show up if you are too effective at holding territory, causing the game to stop progressing. This probably won't happen if you set the difficulty mode high enough that the game isn't a cake walk. ::whistles guiltily::

    Honorable Mentions:
R.O.App Games: (free w/ads) Various RPGs, usually with a heavy idle commponent. Far too popular to make my list https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=8478719966376769106

Drancia: (free with tiny IAPs): A just plain brilliant platformer-style combat game, similar to the popular Slayin. Far too popular to make my list. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.uraraworks.drancia

Logging Quest 1/2: (free with ads): An RPG that automates everything but the town visits between fights. Send your troops to fight and then come back to the game in a few hours. Far too popular to make my list. Part 1 / Part 2

Undefeated ($4.99): An RPG maker game "ported" to android. This is a wonderful RPG. There's a lot of attention to detail. For example, dialog changes completely based on your apparent army rank. Similarly, the loot is awful when exploring the slums. As an added bonus, for once bosses aren't immunite to everything. The author promises 30+ hours of play time and I don't think that's impossible. I played this game to completion, despite the fact that it crashed every ten minutes. I saved between every single random encounter out of fear of crashing. Reviews indicate this problem is common. I'm sure the desktop version is more stable, but the market is flooded with high quality, free RPGmaker games. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hb.undefeated

Beastopia (100% free) and CannonHeads (100% free): A decent RPG game and a puzzle-style inverse tower defense game, respectively. These definitely deserve a chance, but they are just a bit too shallow to make my list; they'd be more at home as highly-rated free flash games. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilitygames.beastopia , https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilitygames.cannonheads

Super Awesome RPG ($4.99): A premium RPG/CCG. I don't regret buying this game, but it feels a bit like the author wanted to make a shallow freemium game and decided not to. Also, the author is a bit too well known to belong on this list. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boomzap.sarpgfull

DungeonBalls (Free with IAPs): Flick marbles at enemies. There are plenty of marble shooters, but this has much more interesting gameplay. The difficulty takes a bit longer too ramp up than it should. I could've sworn this was a premium game with a free demo, but the $199.99 IAP cap seems to indicate that it may have been infested/corrupted. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.raysol.dungeonballs.lite

Dungeon Warfare ($2.99): I love tower defense games. This is one of the better ones. A bit too well-known to make my list. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=valsar.dungeonwarfare

Legend of the moon ($0.99 OR free with IAPs): A solid Metroidvania that treats the player with respect; enemies and bosses make use of exploitable patterns. The free version is too popular to make my list. This game provides exactly what it promises in the author's gameplay video. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.GoZipGame.LOM

Fable of Ruby ($1.99): An excellent Action RPG game that just barely got pushed into honorable mentions. Not sure how to justify that. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.r2roadstudio.tfor

Rune Ranker ($0.99): A level-based platformer RPG. I like it enough to leave it consuming my much-needed phone disk space but not enough that I tend to actually play it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DuoAB.RR

Star Vikings ($2.99): Tactical RPG-ish/Puzzle-ish combat. Far too well known for this list https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roguesnail.starvikings

Life on Mars ($0.99): A pretty standard Metroidvania. Pretends to offer exploration, but heavily gated by equipment. The author loses points for knowingly releasing an update that corrupted everyone's saves. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lom.kaimagazine.second

Dragon's Blade (100% Free): Classic RPG. Far too well known for this list. Mostly included so I remember where I was in my games list when I stopped writing this post. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.natemonster.dragonsblade

    Dishonorable Mentions:
Put a Sock in it (100% Free): It irks me that something so beautiful is so boring. Very, very boring. Such a waste of artistic talent. Though to be fair to the author, I don't think I'm the target audience. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=putasock.faroffdaydream

[REQUEST] Casual games you can play on the bus.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 06:49 PM PDT

Hello, I am looking for casual games you can play on the bus

    • Any F2P games, don't care if it has ads or IAP. Just something you can play on the bus everyday.
    • Don't really mind what genre but preferably casual
    • paid or free, doesn't matter, just something I can spend 15-30 mins everyday on without getting bored.
    • single player
    • and must be playable offline

I did try and search for games that meet my requirements but most of them I deleted after 15 or so minutes because of the games getting repetitive, same thing over and over again etc.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 06:10 PM PDT

Hey guys! Can someone recommend me games similar to clash of clans, in the sense that you have a city/village of your own and then you have some kind of pvp? Theme doesn't matter, could be ancient, futuristic, magical, etc. Thanks in advance

Any game similar to Mark of the Ninja or the old java Splinter Cell games?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 09:10 PM PDT

More specifically, 2d sidescrolling platformer stealth games.

I've searched for it but it keeps giving me hitman:go, thief inc. And although those are great, they're not exactly what i was looking for.

[Request] Looking for a fighting game like Super Smash Bros

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 08:34 PM PDT

Hi, I really like fighting games like SSB and Streetfighter, and I was wondering what your favorites are. I don't mind if it's free or not, all I ask is that it not be pay to win and that it is of high quality. I really don't want a game like Injustice (at least the mobile version) or Contest of Champions, since all you really do is tap until the other guy is dead.

I have been searching for this kind of game for a while now, and since I am a pretty active lurker of this sub I don't think I have missed anything in the mega-threads and I have already gone through the [Request] threads. If anyone can point me in a good direction I'll give them a virtual high five.

[Request] RPG with auction house (also inside: mini-review of Lord of Dungeons)

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 08:20 AM PDT

After binge-playing Lord of Dungeons these last few days I've realized that I really really miss the in-game, player-driven markets. Are there any hidden gems on the play store that have this feature (preferably 2D and RPG-themed)?

As promised, I also want to share a quick review of Lord of Dungeons which is a recent release.

Lord of Dungeons is at its core, a freemium base-building game. Despite this, it takes a unique stab at the genre with new mechanics and high-quality immersion / role-playing which I think is worthy of at least a mention.

The game has two main types of gameplay: the farming half and the battling half. I'll first cover the former. If you prefer a video, this one shows a first look at gameplay and covers about 2/3 of the content (no neckbeard voice-over / face cam).

You the player act the role of a town mayor and dungeon manager. As a dungeon manager, you build and micro-manage dungeons filled with tamed monsters and loot to be discovered. As a town mayor, you micro-manage the inns and weapon shops for weary adventurers in hopes of making a boatload off these tourists. Other actions you can take include exploring new areas in your territory, discovering monsters to capture and dungeons to occupy. To upgrade these buildings and dungeons you need to acquire a wide variety of materials which can be farmed or bought from other players

To capture monsters / conquer dungeons to monetize, you utilize a team of heroes and engage in battles (non-interactive, example here ). There's also the classic hero-collection system with stars and level-ups and all.

    Pros:

    • Themes / aesthetics / setting are well-done and reminiscent of the classic eastern-styled MMORPGs (think cutesy like Maplestory / JRPGs).

    • Player-driven economy with auction house. The main things you buy aren't combat oriented but rather materials to upgrade your facilities. Prices are entirely customizeable and there's very few items you can't put up for sale, hence "player-driven".

    • Devs are generous with the premium currency. You'll be able to fully experience the game before the paywall and lack of new mechanics kicks in. Game is above-average in the ability to play without dropping money.

    Cons:

    • Freemium with the main market being the whales willing to drop hundreds.

    • New content / unlocks / mechanics slows to a crawl after maybe 5-10 hours of gameplay. Essentially becomes an idle clicker / numbers game at this point.

Overall, I'd say give it a whirl if MMORPGs / fantasy-themed games are your fetish. It's definitely nothing for the long-term but hopefully you get a nostalgia high out of it like I did. In any case, it's <300MB total so not much of a hassle to try out should it tickle your curiosity.

[Request] RPG-style game with live co-op and arena

    Posted: 21 Apr 2018 08:40 AM PDT

Hey guys I've been looking for a game with these characteristics since ever, I've found a couple of games through my searches but I've been craving to return to them or find new ones.

    The game must have:

    • Active community / high player base
    • Basic "get the game going" package/paywall up to $100 (paid or freemium)
    • Live co-op and live arena (arena can be AI based but co-op must be live)
    • If strategic/turn-based, I must be capable of choosing which skill to use and which target to hit.
    • Action RPG is welcome as long as the gear is grindable and daily stamina is enough.
    • Decent optimization (this can be overseen if strategic/turn based).

Those are the only aspects I really care about, anything else (auto, gacha, paywall, grind, asian dominance, age, difficulty, offline/online) is irrelevant. Good English MMORPGs are welcome (again, I don't care about auto or <$100 paywalls)

Games I've played that are very good regarding those aspects: Summoner Wars, Clash Royale, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, Arena of Valor (and all other MOBAs but this one had most friends playing / no bonus Stat skin).

Games that are good but fail those aspects: Fire Emblem Heroes, Alchemist Code, Kings Raid.

New games with similar aspects but I haven't see live co-op or live arena: Sdorica -sunset-, Chain Strike.
