Need help choosing school/Gaming Laptop ($1500-$2000)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:34 AM PDT

I know the golden rule is to never mix the two, but i'm not an ultra-avid gamer who plays witcher on Ultra or any of that sort.

    Conditions:

    -Runs Civil3D/Autocad -i7 processor (pref Kaby-Link?) -16gb ram -GTX10 series v.driver -120 Hz Monitor (is this possible?)

I want to run the following games very smoothly:

-CSGO -LoL -Fortnite -PubG -Monster Hunter (Low Graphics?)

    Budget: $1500-$2000

ALSO, i need a laptop that doesn't fully look like a gaming laptop. For example, razer blade (etc.)

Are the new XPS series capable of this? My friend has one and he claims it runs most of these games well while being 4k screen (not 120 hz monitor though)

Lenovo yoga 2 pro bricked after BIOS update

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:22 PM PDT

Hey guys! My laptop was running hot while idle, a suggestion was to update the BIOS from Lenovos home page, so i did. At 60 percent the installation stopped, the computer froze for hours until i turned it off. Now its all black, no beep or fan noise, the keyboard however is lighting up. I have tried the reset button on the side. Is there a way to fix this? To install a new BIOS from USB or something?

The guarantee did not cover this.

Looking for quality laptop with good build quality and no plastic chassis.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:21 AM PDT

Hi, I'm looking for a new laptop with good build quality, a good display (no bad viewing angles, my current laptop is an ASUS with a 1366x768 TN display, which I learned to despise). I already found some laptops that would be nice, but I think I'm missing something and I also can't decide between them. The ones I did find that seem to be ok to my specifications were the following:

    • ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550VD
    • Dell XPS 15 2017, Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
    • Lenovo Ideapad 720S-15IKB, Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

The Zenbook seemed very promising, but I read a bit about the build quality and now I'm not that sure. If the XPS is just a tiny bit more expensive but has a much better build quality, I could justify that. Too bad the XPS is a little bit too expensive, I maybe could still get it in my budget, but I read that it has some problems with build quality as well. If I buy this one, I want to be sure that it is good quality. The Ideapad seems on par with the other two, and is cheaper, which seems like a good deal, but I don't know why it is cheaper. What am I sacrificing here? If it is just because of brand stuff, I don't care, I just want a good and reliable laptop.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Between 1200 and 1700 €, Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't need a touch screen, battery life is also not really a concern. I just need a very durable (not plastic) laptop that I can use for at least 4 years.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too heavy, it should be less than 2.5 kg. Thin is no priority, but not a bulky gaming laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux. I don't care if Windows is already installed, I would just delete that and install Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 15" because 13" and smaller than that is just too tiny.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, just programming, no special programms, just the usual stuff like browser, programming IDEs and so on. I don't even want to run some resource heavy desktop environment, but I want it to be fast and snappy. At least i7 and 4 cores.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need the case/chassis to have a very good build quality (no plastic), no cheap display that has aweful viewing angles, touch screen not needed, also no 4K needed. Finger-print reader and/or illuminated keyboard would both be nice, but are not essential. No need for an optical drive, maybe SD-Port but it is not essential. SDD is crucial(at least 512 GB), no HDD needed, I want 16 GB RAM (and yes, I know 8 GB would suffice).

    Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I just found the ASUS Zenbook UX430UA and it looks like this is exactly what I was looking for! If somebody has some warnings about that one, please tell!

My laptop is needed to be replaced soon and since im starting to use it more and more in school and such im looking for a light portable laptop that can replace my computer with an egpu. I will be using programs such as fusion 360 and visual studio mainly for school plus newish games when at home. 2 in 1 is preferable but not needed, also looking for 2.5k Canadian max, preferably 2k or lower though.

Was looking at the dell xps 15 from ces this year but have heard that dell's have a bad build qualityso im a little worried about that.

Is there any 15" i7-8709 (vega GH) laptop for sale or announced

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:38 AM PDT

The CPU itself has beeb officially released I believe, but all the laptop I've seen so far (Dell XPS 15, HP spectre x360) only have the 8705 (Vega GL).
Am I missing something ? I hope it will make its way to the new Gigabyte Aero 15, but for now I don't seem to find any laptop with it.
I thought it would be used to replace some i7-7700HQ/GTX 1050-1060 combo with extended battery life.

Installing ExpressCard on Latitude 6540 - looks like there is a place for it, just no opening in chassis

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:09 AM PDT

I have an old Latitude 6540 I'd like to try adding an expresscard to. Looking at comparisons of the motherboards/bases with and without the expresscard option installed, it seems that it can be installed even though the chassis does not provide an opening for this base configuration.

I have no problem making such an opening, but are there any opinions on whether this would or wouldn't work?

    XPS 15 9570 Rumored Specs

Thoughts? Looks like the SB2 will have the better GPU (1060 vs. 1050ti Max-Q, but the XPS 15 will have 6 cores. SB2 also has USB-C charging.

Swaping a PC for a Laptop

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:07 AM PDT

I have moved into a place that i do not have enough room for a PC. It was a about a high mid-range build (AMD fx 6300, GTX 950, 8 gb RAM). I mostly played games like league of legends, overwatch, and just some smaller indie games. I am quite unsure about laptop specs and what I will need to run these games. I am also getting into programming at moment and will need it for that.

I plan on selling my pc for about $900-$950 and chuck that towards this new laptop. I would be happy to throw on another $300. So is there any good laptops that could run overwatch that is around $1,200?

Are there any genuinely good windows tablets?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:53 AM PDT

I was using a coworker's one at work (some sort of HP) and it seemed solid.

I never reaaaaally wanted a laptop, and convertible laptops are shit usually, so this sort of re-established my thoughts of wanting one.

I use my laptop for regular internet stuff, MS Office, and some light gaming (processor heavy, no need for keyboard/mouse), so I don't see any real reason I couldn't have a tablet, they just all seem a bit shit.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and i don't know what's a good deal

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:01 PM PDT

I asked my friend, who happens to be quite computer savvy, what I should be looking for in a laptop and he said he'd sell me his laptop, the ASUS K501UW-AB78 for $600 as opposed to the usual prices of $900. I just want to know if that is a good deal or if I can find a better laptop at an equal or lower price.

Extending the life of a 5 year old laptop

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:41 PM PDT

I just received a 5 year old Sony Vaio SVT14115CVXS with Intel i5-3317U, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD and Intel HD 4000 graphics.

Can you guys give me tips into extending the life of this ancient tool? I'm going to be a college student in a few months and I'm expecting for it to last at least until I graduate (so 4 years).

My use for this is watching videos, browsing the internet, using Microsoft Office and if possible, run light projects/edits on Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, InDesign, and After Effects. I'm not really betting much that it can run the Adobe programs but beggars can't really be picky.

The battery is also dying with just about 48% from its real capacity which means I'll need a battery pack soon. Where do you reckon I can get such?

Can you please give me tips on how to take better care of this laptop? My last one (which already bit the dust because I slammed the lid shut ONCE) was a Toshiba from around 2011 with i3, 500GB HDD, 2GB RAM and Intel 3000 graphics held at least until October last year.

Thank you so much to who ever can help a poor kid make the most of his ancient tool.

    I need help Pls

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:17 PM PDT

Hello: D, I have a laptop from several years ago, I know that one of the best options is to acquire a new one, but I would like to know what could happen to this PC. A few days ago my PC was turned off even if it had an external fan, so I decided to add thermal paste I came to think that everything was going to work, but when using it again, I notice the rare pc, an example is with a video game, before it used to go to +60 fps, and now it goes down from 60 to 20 many times. Also, every time I close the (lid?) (To suspend it), when I open it again, the blue windows error screen appears. The processor looks like this after opening: https://i.imgur.com/QYTXSsZ.png :(

What could have happened? Thank you!

    Asus VivoBook Pro N580VD/ M580VD

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:10 PM PDT

I bought ASUS VivoBook Pro N580VD-DM 467T on 16/3/18 for around SGD1600 ( USD1220 ), 2 year Asus Warrenty and a 3rd year 3rd party warrenty about a month ago. However I am thinking of selling it around SGD1300 ( USD990 ), 2 year Asus Warrrenty. ( There are some issue to transfer ownership of the 3rd Year warrenty so I am not including it. )

    N580VD-DM 467T Specs: i7-7700HQ (2.8GHz) 16 GB DDR4 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD GeForce 1050 (4GB DDR5) 15.6″, 1920 x 1080 Around 2KG

Reason: I would like to change as it is abit too heavy. Moreover I do not need such a good laptop as I would be using it for school work and light gaming ( Overwatch Medium setting @ 50 to 60FPS).

Should I sell my 1 month N580VD for a ASUS ZenBook 14 UX430UN-GV115T? Is selling at SGD1300 ( USD990 ) too much or should I go higher? Is there anyone who owes this N580VD or UX430UN over a period of time and be willing to share their experinece? So far I have search and I can't find a review that I could trust.

Also are there any recommendation for a bag for 15.6 inch laptop and able to hold about 25litres of stuff? Look to put some books and a set of sport attire.

    Thank you for your time.

Do they not sell the red model of this laptop anymore, on the Canadian dell website they only have black models. The red model just looks better over all then the black.
