Debian vs other server distros - which one to choose? Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:55 AM PDT I'm using Debian on my servers since I can remember. You know, only SSH connection, no DE and other "server things". But I'd like to change this and try something new. But what's the biggest advantage of... Idk... CentOS? Fedora Server? SUSE? Over good old Debian? I know, Debian's repos are as old as my grandma. But something else? [link] [comments] |
Stable long term release with budgie plus a lot of apps? Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:49 AM PDT So im switching to linux, gonna start off with running it in a VM then do the full switch when im comfortable. What im looking for would ideally be: LTS release, not ubuntu because of privacy, a lot of apps in the app repo, budgie desktop. If i have to ditch one, id probably ditch the budgie desktop even if it seems really nice. Generally i choose performance over visuals any day, its just that budgie looks so nice haha. Any advice? Edit: Im reading up some more on Ubuntu.. Seems 16.04 has pretty good privacy.. Im not sure though but thats my understanding as of now.. [link] [comments] |

Installing minimal fedora with i3 Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:44 PM PDT I am planning to install fedora using the netinstall so I don't have to install the whole gnome desktop environment. I tried to do it in a virtual machine a few times now but there are still a few things I am not sure how to do correctly. The first thing is, during the installation I have to choose the Base Environment and there are three different ones of which I assume that one of them is the right one for my task:
I would probably choose one of the first two, but I'm not really sure what the difference of them is (The last one already has lightdm and window managers like i3, openbox and others, but I would only need i3 and possibly no ligthdm). The next problem I have run into is that the automatic storage configuration creates three different partitions. One for root, one for home and a swap partition. The reason why I would prefer the first two to be on one partition is because I might then run out of space on one of the partitions while there is still space on the other one. But I also think that there might be a reason why it is like that, so I'm not sure if I should put it all on one. I would also prefer a swap file instead of a swap partition but I have not found out how to do that yet. Is that possible to configure during the installation? The next thing I tried is after I chose the Fedora Custom Operating System. I then tried installing: and then and When I then did Also, I would not really need a graphical login screen. Is there maybe some other display manager, that lets me login just using the CLI and then starts the graphical screen with i3 after I logged in? [link] [comments] |

Mail client with CalDAV support? Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:11 AM PDT Hi. I'm planning (ahead) to switch in one of my laptops to Linux completely and I wish, if possible, to be prepared. Forgive me my n00b question, but I'm completely FRESH. Is there a Linux mail client which natively (or not) supports CalDAV protocol for calendars/events and tasks? Beside Thunderbird. I just hate it. [link] [comments] |

[Monitor] LG 27UD60 Monitor with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:11 PM PDT Hi. I'm having a little bit of trouble with the LG 27UD60 Monitor when using it on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on my Dell XPS 13 9360 laptop. When I watch videos on full screen on the monitor, fast-changing scenes don't render quickly enough and have pixelated parts (kinda like checkerboards) across the screen. I've set the screen resolution to 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz as it was recommended. I'm using HDMI and since the Dell XPS 13 does not have an HDMI port, I'm also using a HDMI to USB Type C adapter. However, when I mirror the displays, the pixelatedness goes away. Furthermore, when I use the monitor on Windows 10, there's no issue at all (either using the display on its own or mirroring my laptop's display). I'm wondering if there's a driver issue that I need to take care of for Ubuntu or if there are any configuration settings I need to change in order to solve the problem. Does anyone have any experience with using LG monitors with Ubuntu? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Trouble trying to get file from computer to vps? (Linux Related) Posted: 30 Mar 2018 03:16 AM PDT Well I'm trying to get PyLoris files from my Linux computer over to my VPS running Centos7. I've tried FTP and put the files in my private folder but for some reason i can not run them over ssh logged in as root? I was going to use winscp to transfer the PyLoris over to my root directory on vps but winscp is not linux compatible. How can i get these files over to my server and run them? Because it doesn't seem to find the directly Private from my root where i put the PyLoris files over ftp. So i think i need to put my PyLoris files in my foot directory?? This is for stress testing my OWN hidden service website. Would really appreciate some help [link] [comments] |

How do I configure FFMPEG to see/use Blackmagic Decklink? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:31 PM PDT I am new to linux and compiling/configuring things. I could use some guidance. I am trying to allow FFMPEG to see and utilize a Blackmagic Decklink pci card. I need to configure FFMPEG and this is where I get stuck. I have no clue what to do. This is what I have found via google fu and I am stuck. https://www.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-devices.html#decklink "To enable this output device, you need the Blackmagic DeckLink SDK and you need to configure with the appropriate --extra-cflags and --extra-ldflags." Any help would be appreciated. If someone is willing to spend a few minutes talking to me on discord/skype to help me jump this hurdle that would be amazing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:39 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm trying to understand how MESA and especially the AMD video drivers work. I'm getting a bit confused by AMDGPU-DC. I get the separation into kernel and user space drivers. Is AMDGPU-DC just the successor of the kernel space driver AMDGPU? Or is it a fork and not backwards compatible? Thanks! rr [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:59 PM PDT Hi All, I am running KDE Neon LTS 5.8 and I made the mistake of trying to upgrade VLC to the nightly builds. Unfortunately this was a while ago, and I haven't addressed the problem because I have been busy. Despite VLC still working I need to fix it because I cannot update my system. When I update with sudo apt upgrade I get this output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree When I try sudo apt-get -f install it investigates and states that the VLC packages are broken (the output is long and repetitive). While looking for an answer I found a program ppa-purge, which would clear all of the VLC packages that came with the nightly ppa. But, I cannot install any new programs because the broken package warning comes up each time. Is there a way to delete all of these packages and reinstall VLC cleanly? I'm looking at nuking the whole thing, cause I can't find an answer. If more information is needed I will respond promptly. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
