Windows 7 updated while I was sleeping, now keeps freezing. Posted: 16 Feb 2018 02:22 AM PST TL;DR My computer is freezing in "stages" until it fully locks up after only 5-10 minutes of use. I've been dealing with stuff like this for about 20 years so I've already tried all the basic stuff. Edit: it's doing so with CPU and RAM usage both lower than 15% and does not appear to be overheating. I've never seen freezing quite this, it doesn't lock up all at once, but rather in stages. Unsure if it's related but my external HD was plugged in, and my boot sequence is USB first for using a portable OS, so I woke up to the Dell screen. Unplugged my HD but not the USB cable and Windows booted up fine, finished installing its updates. After the 3rd freeze I unplugged the USB cable which caused my cursor to just be in a black purgatory, I could still move it though. So that was odd. As for the freezing I get about 5 minutes of usage and then whatever I'm doing becomes unresponsive, videos stop playing, etc. I can minimize and maximize the window but i can't open any new files or folders. Then over 5 minutes or so, I lose the ability to do that first, but I can still highlight things on the desktop, lose that ability but I can still move the cursor around. At this point I can't even launch task manager. And then eventually I lose the ability to even move the cursor. The 3rd time I monitored what was going on with the CPU/RAM usage. I was just watching a video on YouTube and they were both hovering around 20% which seems high for an i5 3.2ghz quad-core with 8gb of RAM but not fatal. When it finally froze usage was at 3%/15%. Boot 4 (after removing the USB cable as that was the only variable besides the update) I closed all non-essential programs (Steam and such) and just watched Task Manager. CPU usage never went above 4% and RAM hovered around 10%. Still within about 10 minutes though, task manager froze and I couldn't even click on anything. The physical computer itself is well ventilated and doesn't seem to be overheating. I want to take it apart and use air duster as it's been 6 months or so, but no one sells it at this time in the morning so that will have to wait. For just myself and my friends I've been doing tech support for 20 years and I've never seen anything like this, and it's so oddly specific that Google hasn't been helpful so far, I'm stumped on what to do. I haven't made a restore point in an uncomfortably long time, so that's not a pleasant option. The only thing I can think to do is boot up another OS to confirm it's software, not hardware, but I'm 95% sure it's not overheating as it's 60 degrees (F) in my house. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo ideapad lags and freeze after system update was interrupted Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:56 AM PST Hello and thank you for reading my post. Foreword : my grasp of technical english is seriously mediocre. I've had an ideapad 720 for two months. I haven't had any problem with it until last weekend : twice, when I was shutting it down, I got a message saying that a system update was ready to be installed and did I want to do it later ? I said yes each time. Third time, I think what happened is the system update started (without notice) and got interrupted. I can't figure out or remember why : maybe the laptop lagged and I forced it to shutdown. In any case I didn't realize that I was interrupting a system update. Since then, the computer hasn't been working properly : it's extremely slow until it just freezes and get totally stuck on whatever screen it is on. Sometimes the system shuts down and reboots automatically (and there's a blue error notice screen) but then it's not any better after the reboot. I've had to shut it down myself by pressing the power for 10 seconds because it's the only thing that would work. Other things it has done : once spotify had just disappeared from the system. And after a reboot it was there again but I had been logged out (and I still haven't been able to log in again because the computer gets stuck before I can do anything). So I think I have a problem, and I'm a major noob so I'm not sure how to proceed so any help is appreciated. So far all my computer problems were solved by a reboot but here it's clearly not enough. Thanks ! Tldr : new ideapad 720 has been totally useless (lags then freezes until I shut it down forcefully). I don't know how to proceed because I'm a computing noob ! [link] [comments] |

Alienware 17 R4 using unecessary amounts of computer resources Posted: 16 Feb 2018 02:12 AM PST Hi... So. Specs of this beasty thing is: GTX 1080 i7-6820HK 32 GB DDR4 ram 1TB HDD - 256GB SSD The issues I seem to have are when playing videos of doing absolutely nothing at all, the fans always get louder to the point where it's on par when gaming. Whenever I open task manager to check, the CPU is 30% + to even 70% but immediately plummets to 15% to 5% usage. It's always using 8GB RAM too... I think I have malware on the laptop but BitDefender isn't seeing it. Regardless, is there a way to optimise my computers performance. I shouldn't really have to. [link] [comments] |
Harddrive of 900 GB filled up while i can only find at best a 12 GB folder Posted: 15 Feb 2018 12:14 PM PST Description of problemSo i have this old portable Hard Drive that my friend installed inside the computer after some part of it broke and now it starts to get pretty full. however i can only see that i use maybe 20-30 GB on it. i suspect it could be a harddrive i used for either my old WII or something and formated some part of it to be used for that. i don't really remember exactly what i used it for before but i keep getting popup messages about how the drive is almost full and i just want to get rid of all excess stuff. Is there a way for me to see what else could be inside the hard drive? Other relevant infoNot sure what could count as relevant but it's a old Elements Hard drive from maybe 5-6 years back on 1TB. PC completely freezing whilst running games Posted: 15 Feb 2018 09:09 PM PST When i'm playing games my pc will frequently freeze. I will often (but not always) still be able to move the cursor, but all programs etc will not respond to any clicks, i cant open ask manager etc. Everything is frozen completely. I then have to force restart my pc to get it to work again. There is no consistent time scale to this problem sometimes it will happen 3-4 times a day, other times not at all and the programs i'm running are usually the same. It has completely shut down and restarted itself maybe once or twice, but this is not the norm. The odd thing is that i can play these games at their usual settings fine for hours and hours sometimes, and at other times it can crash almost immediately upon opening. It has been this way for close to a month now. PC Specs: Windows 8.1 CPU - AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz Motherboard Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Motherboard Model: GA-78LMT-USB3 Chipset - AMD 7805 Memory - DDR3 16GB Dual Channel DRAM Freq. - 803.5 MHz GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti - GDDR5 4096 MBytes If you need any more information let me know and i will provide what i can Edit: so I can confirm it is not always when playing games that I crash. It can be just during general browsing online (nothing stressful). Also games are being slower to load than usual, and exiting games seems to be more prone to crashing [link] [comments] |

Random Shutdowns, Need Help Troubleshooting. Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:53 PM PST Some important information to start. About a year ago, I bought a new gpu and psu. I experienced random shutdowns 2 months after buying them. After maybe 30 shutdowns, I found that the cable between the psu and the gpu burnt black on the psu end. I replaced the cable, and quit using that port on the psu. System worked fine after that. Fast forward to just 2 months ago, the shutdowns started happening again. This time, I sent the parts in for replacement because they still had a warranty on them. I put the old psu and gpu (before the upgrade) back into this pc while I wait for my replacements. I found that my pc is still shutting down almost every day. However, now it will sometimes be a bluescreen rather than immediate shutdown. Temps are fine, and the pc restarts on its own after the shutdown. What steps should I take to troubleshoot further? I don't have spares to replace every part in my pc, but I would be willing to buy replacements if I knew that specific part was the issue. Current components: CPU: AMD Fx 6300 Motherboard: MSI MS-7641 GPU: r7 250 PSU: 350w, dont know model RAM: 8gb, again dont know model HDDs: toshiba dt01aca050 500gb, toshiba hdwd120 2tb Thanks a ton in advance. Posted: 16 Feb 2018 12:19 AM PST My phone (LG-H830) dropped and the touch screen broke. I can see the screen but cannot put in the passcode to unlock. My insurance sent me out a brand new phone of the same model. Can I somehow copy everything over to get access to my data? [link] [comments] |
Application blurred and content offset. Posted: 16 Feb 2018 02:29 AM PST Hello, The issue im currently facing is happening with both pgAdmin 4 and some Ren'Py(Visual Novel Framework) applications. The content is blurred and offset in the Window. Here is a Screenshot of the application to show my problem: https://imgur.com/oubGS7b As you can see the Toolbar of the application is cut under the frame of the window. Also my cursor is on pg_global but pg_default is selected because the content is offset itself. I just installed pgAdmin 4 so i think it has something to do with the Framework the application is written in. Thx in advance [link] [comments] |

Recent crashes/freezes involving gaming and watching videos Posted: 15 Feb 2018 09:20 PM PST I built my computer a while back and it didn't start acting up until months later. I have an Nvidia graphics card, corsair psu, amd ryzen cpu. It acted up one day and froze while playing a game. I wasn't able to use my computer for a month after that due to me moving. When I was able to use it however it seemed to freeze when I was playing games or watching videos. It wouldn't freeze immediately, but would take a while before it froze. This also differed per game. League of legends or other games usually took longer to freeze, while Injustice 2 if I played with someone else on the same computer with two controllers seemed to freeze almost minutes in. After something caused my computer to freeze, if I powered it off and immediately resumed my task it would freeze a lot more frequently. I checked my temperatures and everything was normal. I ran a mem86 test and my RAM is fine. I scanned my harddrive and that was fine. I cleane dout the little dust that was in my computer but that didn't work. I did a full scan with windows defender and nothing showed up to be bad. I deleted an application that I downloaded a couple weeks before this started happening and my computer still froze. I tried using different mice and keyboards and unplugged new usb devices that I was using to no avail. I tried deleting my temp files and increasing my virtual space to 1.5x the amount of my RAM in MB. I also installed all the new drivers for my gpu. I changed the power management settings to adaptive and I tried changing it to maximum pref. What can be the problem? Let me know please. I don't overclock. Thank you. Specs: My CPU is AMD - Ryzen 3 1300X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor GPU is EVGA - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB SSC GAMING ACX 3.0 Video Card Motherboard: ASRock - AB350M Pro4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard RAM: Crucial - 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory PSU: Corsair - CX (2017) 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply They were all new. The only thing that was used/refurbished was my monitor. Someone suggested that I do not have enough head room for my gpu, but wouldn't it immediately have symptoms when I first used it? I still play the same games so I don't understand why it would affect it now and not before. [link] [comments] |

Sudden shut downs when gaming. Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:40 PM PST I have been experiencing sudden shut downs with my computer lately that only happens when gaming. (Skyrim Special, Just Cause 3, Civilization 5) For a while it happened rarely, now its happening frequently. Now sometimes it suddenly shuts down when I launch a game. I have to flip the switch on the power supply to get my computer to boot again. One time it would not even boot after that and started flashing lights off and on rapidly as if it was starting to boot but didn't have enough power. Of course I really have no idea why it did that, it just seemed that way.I assumed that it was either a problem with the power supply or the surge protector as when I plugged the power cord into the outlet directly it went on to boot without issue. I have since replaced the surge protector with a new one and had no problems for while. But now just recently these random shut downs have returned and not even connecting it to the outlet directly helps. My computer components are not even that old. Less than a year ago I replaced the cpu, ram, gpu, and psu. What could be my problem? A failing power supply perhaps? The last time I had shut downs was due to an overheating graphics card that got replaced. My new one rarely goes beyond 60 Celsius. I've even observed the temps right before a shutdown. Neither the graphics card or cpu was overheating. I also wonder if it could have anything to do with my new ssd. The problems started after I installed it. But not immediately. Well, thanks for reading about my problem. I hope I can find a solution as I really want to get into Kingdom Come: Deliverance soon. Here are my computer parts. Good day.

Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:48 AM PST Hi guys, I have a server running, lets call it 'Server-01'. I am having trouble mapping drives by the name, it works by ip. Although if I ping server-01 it resolves correctly to the ip. Question is, does mapping a drive by name use a different protocol* to resolve the name than pinging would ? I have tried rebuilding the dns onto the physical host with no joy. Any help would be appreciated *not sure if protocol is the best phrase, just a lack of a better one coming to mind. Computer/Windows crashes and kills m.2 + internet Posted: 15 Feb 2018 11:01 PM PST Hey all, Been having some issues for the past week or so and don't know what could be going on. Going to list a timeline of events below as it happens almost every time in this order. FWIW: Temps appear to be fine so I don't think it's the CPU shutting itself off, though I don't know what that would look like if it was. Additionally, I can't reproduce it, appears to be fairly random. Recently reinstalled Windows and had a not great time with the install failing because the m.2 wasn't bootable in my BIOS and the installer broke my original install on my SSD... Wasn't very smart with all of that. Started having issues after about two weeks of being problem free despite the messy install process. ...... While playing a game (Minecraft and CS) or browsing Chrome: 1) Taskbar + background goes black, program windows seemingly unaffected 2) 10-15 seconds later mouse lags 3) All program interaction dies (can't click on anything), mouse is still move-able 4) Can still hear Discord but PTT does not work 4) 10-15 seconds later monitors go black 6) 10-15 seconds later, BIOS says it has no drive (before, when I didn't have the secondary boot priority disabled, BIOS would display that there was no drive with an OS and continue as below) 7) Option to launch back to BIOS where m.2 isn't found 8) Roommate gets disconnected from the internet for a very brief bit. Not enough to cause Discord to drop a server, but enough for Rainbow Six to kick him from a match) 9) Exiting BIOS will still say no drive found until I kill the power and turn the machine back on where it boots into Windows immediately with no issues ...... Windows 10 Home x64 then Windows 10 PRO x64 Version 1709 Build 16299.248 ...... Setup: UPS > PDU > Computer UPS > Modem UPS > Router (UPS never really runs over 450W on a 750W device) i7-4790k MSI GTX 1080 Seahawk X (390.65/390.77) Samsung 960 EVO m.2 Things I've tried: Uninstalling all recently installed programs: MSI Afterburner, MSI Gaming App, Twitch App + Minecraft with mods, Rainmeter Updating graphics drivers Reformatting Windows (Upgraded to Pro while doing this as well) tonight, had it happen twice after but have been fine for about 4 hours since with playing a match of CS and running a GPU stress test to see if it was temps or something [link] [comments] |
black screen during cloning hdd > ssd Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:09 AM PST hello, i bought ssd and decided to use software that came with it to clone my drive, i followed the instructions, it asked me to restart pc, i let it and after a while "preparing" window appeared followed with black screen after. im not sure what to do now, around 2h 30m passed and my pc is making a lot of noise, is the cloning still happening even though black screen? my ssd is crucial mx300 and software is acronis true image, around 300gb of memory to clone if that matters [link] [comments] |
Screen won't turn display anything and some usb issues Posted: 16 Feb 2018 12:59 AM PST Edit: I fucked up the title. Ignore 'turn' I built my computer last August and I've had no major issues with it until now. Recently, I noticed that the screen did not turn on sometimes but a proper restart with some unplugging usually fixed the problem. For the past weeks I have also be dealing with some usb/headphone jack issues, with some random disconnections that I've mentally ignored and blamed on bad drivers. Yesterday, the screen would not display anything and I can't seem to fix it with a restart. I also noticed that my keyboard will start idling (K70) by going back to the factory setting but not my color setting and the mouse light does not come on. Everything else is normal, the computer turns on. There are both light on the graphics card and on the motherboard with all fans spinning. My initial though is that the motherboard is failing and the problem has progressed to the point where I need to RMA it. I don't believe it is the graphics card due to the usb issues and that it seems to be working just fine by the looks of it. I'm using a displayport cable that is connected from the graphics card to the screen. Any thoughts? My rig: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant [link] [comments] |

which of course didn't work. What else can I do? I was hoping to sell this PC after I build one as it's going used for around $600 on ebay but I think I'd more enjoy taking it out in the woods and really bashing it in good. [link] [comments] |
