An Obscure MediaTek Phone with no Kernel Source can run AOSP Android Oreo thanks to Project Treble

TIL: You can remove an app from the home screen by simply flicking away the icon.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:12 PM PST

After long-pressing an app, no need to drag it to the "Remove" area on top of the screen. (I use stock Android)

Apologies if this was common knowledge. I just discovered it and felt like sharing!

    PureNexus - What Happened?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 04:53 PM PST

PN used to be the go-to ROM for those of us with Nexus and Pixel phones. I've heard rumblings about an Oreo update, but those seem to have stagnated.

Since this is an Android sub, let's get some discussion on what ROMs everyone has moved to and why.

Like the title States I just played with a very close to production Samsung S9. I got to use it for about 20 min. Got pretty familiar with the device. I'll try to answer any questions anyone has.
To preface. Leaks are correct for the physical look of phone. I played with the US Qualcomm variant.

LPT: Take a screenshot now of your IMEI number and back it up online. It will be a lifesaver if you need future tech support and your phone won't turn on.

Any demand for 18:9 smaller screen phones?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 07:34 AM PST

I'm wondering if Samsung or other display manufacturers have plans for smaller "infinity" displays. I loved the Galaxy S8 but even with crazy small bezels, 5.8 is still too big the reach the top of the phone screen. Anybody else want this?

Can I just say how absolutely fantastic Android can be?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 11:14 AM PST

I just have two short stories to tell about why I love Android. Background; I have a Nexus 6 with LineageOS + Francokernel.

    1) I was on vacation a week ago and went to a music festival. I needed my battery to survive because if you get lost at one of these things and you don't have a phone then you are fucked. I didn't want to use airplane mode because I obviously still wanted to receive texts/calls but idle battery life of a 14 hour event was a worry as I was already at 60% from Hearthstoning on the drive. Pulled out my kernel manager and flipped to low-power mode which auto under-clocks the gpu/cpu. It gets laggy but battery life is insane. Festival ended at like 3am, battery life 40%.

    2) Was at a friends house and his internet went out. They billed his old address for some reason and gave internet to the wrong house (how???). Whipped out my phone, turned on the ROMs built-in 5ghz wifi hotspot and streamed 4k Netflix for a couple hours before his internet came back up.

I love the flexibility Android has to offer! Anyone else have stories to share?

New Play Store search results highlights the top result, and doesn't show images or descriptions for the rest of the apps. Seems unfair to apps trying to get discovered. Anyone know why Google did this?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:38 PM PST

    example

The play results used to show descriptions and screenshots for all the results, so you could read and look to.see which one you wanted. Now it only shows this for the top result.

All I see this doing is making the top app get more installs, while apps in position 2 and up, get ignored.

Is this an announced change, or am I just on an A/B flight maybe?
