What Toolkit/ToolSet Do You Recommend For a PC Repair Technician?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 12:33 PM PST

Desktop Support here, in regards to h/w we frequently take apart Laptops, Printers, and Cisco IP phones...

At 1st glance none of the toolkits found on Amazon would suffice as they lack proper screwdrivers that would fit into narrow openings as found on the Cisco IP phones and printers..

    Appreciate any input and suggestions...

Hard drive suddenly stopped being recognised

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:50 AM PST

    Hi!

Yesterday my desktop computer began to freeze up, and services began randomly shutting down (e.g. the audio service just stopped, I couldn't CTRL+ALT+DELETE). I figured I should just restart it, and upon restarting it I was greeted with the message 'no bootable device found'.

Now I've gone through a lot of troubleshooting and I've determined its a harddrive issue - my laptop harddrive works fine connected to the desktop's motherboard.

I bought a SATA to USB adapter, and have hooked up my HDD to my laptop. The hard drive spins up, it sounds fine (not making any strange clicking noise), but its not detected. Whenever I plug in the adapter the windows noise plays, and it recognizes a 'USB mass storage device', but I'm fairly certain thats windows simply recognizing the USB adapter device - not the HDD.

My question is this: is my hard drive screwed? Or can I take any steps to recover my data? It's got some relatively important stuff on it and I didn't expect it just to conk out without any warning. I've not had hard drive issues in the past.

The harddrive is an extremely bog standard WD 1 TB 3.5 inch SATA thingy, and I'm on Windows 7

Is my hdd working when I am not accessing files on it?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 12:20 AM PST

Just an overall question about understanding how hdds work. My understanding is that the lifespan of an average hdd is 3-5 years, so does that imply active usage/access or overall time that I spent on my pc (i have 3 drives currently)?

Computer gone from fast to slow, seemingly overnight.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:24 AM PST

    Hi guys

Sorry im not the best with computers so let me know if there is any other helpful information I can provide.

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-400MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz Ram: 16GB 64 bit OS Windows 10 Home

My laptop is quite old (i believe i purchased it in 2013) but aside from a few battery issues it has been running perfectly fine. About two days ago I was doing the normal routine (playing a few games - LoL, Rocket League) and my laptop simply could not handle these games (when the previous day it had no issue). I have noticed the fan has gotten significantly louder and has seemed a lot hotter than usual. However I have been using my cooling pad tonight and it hasnt seemed to hot. But even without the overheating, my computer still suffers the massive FPS drops and overall sluggishness.

I have tried using the air compressor to clean out my computer and I have also checked my antivirus to make sure no malware is involved.

What are my other options to figure out what has caused this sudden drop in computer performance? (and then I can hopefully find a solution)

    Really appreciate any advice.

Windows 10 install suddenly unbootable, INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:05 AM PST

I need a bit of help here, last night my PC was still working fine and this morning I'm stuck at the seemingly infamous INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE BSOD, can anyone help me out?

To give a bit of info, my PC has two SSDs, one with my affected Windows 10 install and one with my old Windows 7 install, the Win7 drive still boots fine. I can also still access the Win10 SSD from inside Win7 and everything looks fine.

The bootloaders of each Windows don't know about the other install, I switch between OSs using my UEFI's Boot Option Manager.

Hardware-wise both SSDs are a 120gb SanDisk Ultra II

Upon repeated booting of Windows 10 I reached the "Attempting to Repair Windows" phase which is unsuccessful every time, SrtTrail.txt also shows no errors and everything completed successfully but there is something curious to note in the last performed Disk metadata test it reports "Completed successfully" but unlike the other tests it reports "Error code = 0x32" instead of "0x0"

Googling that so far only leads to the conclusion that 0x32 is a generic error code.

Other things I tried so far:

Running chkdsk from the Repair Environment, the first time it found some errors in the Volume Bitmap and corrected them which unfortunately didn't help, further chkdsk runs indicate no problems.

Setting my SATA AHCI setting to IDE also didn't help, I hoped it might have just been a sudden broken AHCI driver but nothing.

Safe Mode doesn't work either with the same BSOD.

The Windows 10 install was at build 1709 Fall Creators Update with the latest Windows updates installed, last week there was an update that looked like a updated kernel but otherwise I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

The only thing of note I did yesterday on my Win10 install was to enable SMB v1 support, rebooted, transferred data from my Nintendo 3DS which needs SMB v1 to be accessed over the network, then disabled SMB v1 support again, rebooted once more and everything seemed okay. I proceeded to play a few games, shut down my PC normally and this morning the whole mess started.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Why wont my bluray player read discs?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 01:58 AM PST

I've used it 5 times or less. It wouldn't read discs anymore, so I took it apart and cleaned the lens as they were dusty.

Still doesn't read discs and sounds like a printer trying to print.

EDIT: I've tried multiple discs with no luck. Also no, I don't watch Two Broke Girls, I just grabbed the first blu-ray on the shelf.

SSD write speed is low. 240 MB/s and should be about 500 MB/s

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 01:55 AM PST

My SSD writing speed after 11.441 hours (15 months 26 days 17 hours) of Power On Time and 10.7 TB of Data Written is from 170 to 240 MB/s with a 1 GB test file. I remember that it was writing at full speed when I bought it. It is a Kingston HyperX 3K 240 GB. I've always been using it on macOS with Trim disabled. This is the full report. Under DRIVE HEALTH INDICATORS there is a 64.3% status on Raw Read Error Rate but I still have to understand well what does it mean.

Reset my parents’ computer, but it won’t let me activate/reinstall My Office

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 01:35 AM PST

Hey. I ended up resetting my parents' computer (basically kept all the files, but had to reinstall apps), but after installing Office, it isn't allowing me to activate it.

Now, I mentioned that this is my parents' computer because I don't know what their Microsoft account email is, let alone their password, but I do have the product key because I recently got a new computer myself, and after mentioning that Office wasn't included, my Dad forwarded me his order confirmation email he received after purchasing Office Professional Plus 2016 thinking I might be able to get it through that. I actually never even got around to trying it, but luckily I kept the email.

So after clicking on install from there, I was able to install it on the computer...but after entering the product key, I received a message that said I had "downloaded it too many times/max amount of times/reached limit," or something along those lines.

But the reason I was using their computer in the first place was to use their printer in order to print out a Word document, and it was working fine then (and there was no message notifying me that I will be unable to access Office programs after something like 30 days when opening files, which it does now). So I don't know if it's counting this one computer twice when saying I went over the limit, or what?

I'd appreciate any help. I've actually been going to my parents' house mainly only to feed the cat, get the mail etc. because they're on vacation until March 3 - and I'm hoping to get this resolved before they get back/notice.

Thanks a lot for any help!

Is it better to play a game with a potato PC on a external HDD or a USB key ?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 01:35 AM PST

    Hello hello,

I asked on PC gaming but it seems like this reddit is a better place for this question, sorry !

I'm actually playing LoL on a potato PC (that i'm really surprised it runs on it) but since this pc only has 32gb disk space, I installed it on an external 250Gb disk drive. But those external drives uses lots of power from the computer no ? Would it be better to buy a little 16Gb USB key to install LoL on it ? Maybe my computer will heat less ?

Thanks a lot for your answers, sorry for approximative english :)

Why does Chrome open up by itself everytime I turn on my PC or laptop?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:12 PM PST

This has been happening for a few months now and I got used to it but now it's gotten to the point where it's annoying. Both my PC and laptop are Windows 10. I did a search on Google and it told to go to task manager and DISABLE chrome on startup which I did but it does nothing at all. I also re-installed Chrome several times (which is absolutely frustrating) and it helps for a day or two before the bug happens again. Does anyone have this issue too? Any workaround? Thanks

Google Chrome makes my pc impossible to use.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 03:25 AM PST

    Hello

This started happening yesterday and i couldn't figure out why. So basically i couldn't use my mouse or my keyboard when my pc opened up. I went to system recovery and something new was added there yesterday. It was Google Chrome (i've had google chrome since the first time i got my PC and there were no problems then) So i removed it and my keyboard and mouse started working normally again. Then i reinstalled google chrome and then when i closed and reopened my pc. Then it suddenly stopped working again? I don't know if this happens to anyone else and Google Chrome has to fix its shit or that its just happening to me?

Dell Inspiron 15 (7559) does not boot into Win10 unless I disable the GPU in safe-mode... tried everything I could, this is my last resort

    Description of problem

Ever since one damned forced Windows Update that rebooted my laptop, I have not been able to boot into Windows unless I disable my GPU in safe mode beforehand. My laptop has an Intel IGP a Nvidia GPU, and they're supposed to alternate based on the task at hand, through a system called Optimus (apparently?).

    Here's the step by step:

Windows Update forcibly downloads and install an Nvidia driver update, one fateful night of April or March 2017. My laptop reboots and I get a chain of BSOD (DPC Watchdog violation ie. timeout). Having no idea what happened, I reboot into safe mode and manage to narrow it down to that damn Nvidia driver: when I uninstall it from Device Manager, I can boot into Windows normally. Problem: I can't use my GPU that I paid good money for.

If Windows 10 somehow redetects/enables/updates the GPU, I have to do it all over again. Right now there's no more BSOD, it just goes from the Dell logo to a black screen, indefinitely.

I would like to be able to use my GPU again! It's my first "gaming" laptop and I'm actually really freakin sad that it's basically become a bulky Excel machine... :(

    When this issue began

    After a Windows Update in April/May 2017

    Recurring issue

    Yes

    Date of purchase

    November 2016

    Under Warranty

    No

    Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Right now the Nvidia GPU is disabled in the Device Manager.

If I enable it, the laptop will work for 5-10s then freeze entirely, except the mouse cursor. I have to hard-reboot. Then after the Dell logo, the screen remains black forever (doesn't boot into Windows).

Only fix is to go into safe mode and disable the GPU again.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

All manners of repair tools (Dell, Windows)

Dell Support Assist hardware check at boot.

Tried disabling the "Optimus" system in my UEFI: no such option exists.

All kinds of Recovery options and System Restore in Windows.

Reinstalling Windows 10 using the Microsoft iso (without formatting, then with complete formatting)

Reinstalling Windows 10 using the Dell iso (w/o formatting, then with complete formatting)

Updating all drivers with Windows Update

Updating all drivers with Dell Support Assist

Uninstalling drivers then reinstalling them in different orders: CPU first, then GPU; GPU first, then CPU... only CPU, or only GPU...

Installing old drivers: I tried the Intel drivers that my laptop was presumably shipped with (dated 15 Dec 2015): Intel-HD-Graphics-510-515-520-530-540-Driver_VTHJM_WIN_22.20.16.4771_A12 using the Device Manager "Have Disk" procedure so it wouldn't auto-update it.

I also tried an Nvidia driver from the same period: 9550_Video_Driver_033Y2_WN32_10.18.13.5425_A01 (around 2015)

I also tried old CPU driver with new GPU driver. I also tried different orders of installing those (CPU first, GPU first...). I was always careful to do a clean install for the Nvidia one ie. that erases the previous driver.

It must have something to do with the drivers. After having tried the old drivers that presumably were shipped with my laptop in the first place, I'm just at a complete loss right now and getting desperate... lots of people only are having/have had this issue but it seems there's no definite fix. My laptop isn't under warranty anymore and I'm at the other end of the world from where I bought it so Dell Replacement isn't really an option. Also I don't want to give them any more money for the rest of my life.

Please help me! Thank you very much 🙏

How to improve very slow internet speeds on old laptop?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:54 AM PST

I'm using a late 2011, 13 inch Macbook Pro which is running OS X Yosemite (v10.10). Over the past few months, I've noticed that the internet is incredibly slow only on my laptop, and none of the other devices at home. Using the google speed test, my download speed is 1.5Mbps and my upload speed is 0.85Mbps on my home wifi. However on my phone, the download speed is 43.8Mbps and the upload speed is 11.5Mbps. In March this year it'll be six years since I got my laptop so is this due how old it is? I've tried clearing my RAM by deleting old files, closing unnecessary tabs and using the laptop in different rooms throughout the house. Nothing's worked so far and I was wondering if there's any other way I could improve the internet speed? I'll only be able to get a new laptop at earliest the end of this year so any help would be appreciated!

After this my computer booted fine sometimes, other times it would start into the blue windows screen saying Windows has encountered a problem and had to restart.

I can't remember all the references but one was; 'Bad pool header' and another was to do with C:\windows\system32\logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt.

The latter I fixed through the post by Vijay B on this link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/total-identified-windows-installations-0/52359f87-de4a-41dc-b0c3-cc275e1d9fbf?auth=1

Constant humming and intermittent ringing when using headset w/ USB DAC, added buzzing when using mechanical keyboard

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:33 AM PST

Computer: Windows 10, MSI GE70 2PE Apache Pro Laptop

Headset: Kingston HyperX Cloud Core Gaming Headset

DAC: ZHILAI H7 PC USB Desktop External Sound Card HIFI PCM2704 DAC

Keyboard: Drevo Excalibur 84-key Tenkeyless Mechanical Keyboard

AUDIO CLIP 1 ('ring' sound at around the :9 and :14 second mark)

AUDIO CLIP 2 (This clip shows the added 'buzz' when using my keyboard with the LEDs on, and how the sound of it changes with me toggling my keyboard's LED down from 100% down to 0%.)

I managed to capture the audio by plugging the single aux coming directly from the headset (before connecting into the female PC cable that splits into two seperate mic and audio ones) into the mic jack on my laptop.

How I'm using my headset right now: Audio aux is connected to the DAC's headset jack, and mic aux is connected to my laptop's mic jack. I bought the DAC because the audio jack on my laptop isn't working properly.

I tried switching usb ports, unplugging everything from every usb port, and nothing seems to change.

The problem is made much worse when I am using the backlight function on my keyboard. The buzzing changes if the brightness is decreased. It goes away completely if the backlight is turned to off or the keyboard is unplugged. It seems that the circuit board/pcb is damaged in some way or something. I've had weird issues with the keyboard's LED since I had it. Here is a post outlining an LED issue with the keyboard itself.

I also noticed when I'm doing certain activities such as downloading a file or loading a page, etc, I also get random buzzing, electronic sounds. Just thought I'd mention that.

I apologize if my terminology was off. Not the most knowledgeable on this stuff. If there's any other info whatsoever you guys need, or if I left anything out, just let me know. :)

Rattling sound from graphics card when at 60-75% fan speed when case is vertical.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 10:39 PM PST

I'm getting a rattling sound coming from the graphics card when at 60-75% fan speed, when the case is vertical. If I lay the case on its side the noise stops.

When the GPU is not under load and the fan speed is low the noise does not occur and if the fan speed is really fast it doesn't either. When gaming the fan speed is in the 60-75% range very frequently and the rattling is quite annoying.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue could be? I already pulled out the card and re-seated it but the problem persists.

Surface Book: Usb 3.0 storage not being recognized, USB 2.0 working

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:19 AM PST

So i am not sure whether the Problem came with the Creators Update or not since I do not any 3.0 storage devices frequently, but my device doesn't recognize my usb 3.0 hard drive or any usb 3.0 Flash sticks anymore. Usb 2.0 work fine and if i plug the hard disk into the Computer via a usb 2.0 hub it works. Directly though it gets power, but there is no popup or anything on the Computer. Furthermore the SD Card Reader behaves exactly the same.

I reinstalled Windows, updated the Surface Drivers, deinstalled usb Drivers, but cannot seem to resolve the Problem. Has anyone had a similar experience or any other ideas? I would hate to have to send in the device, but i did anything i could think of and even tried with the Surface Support for hours.

Thanks for any hints in advance.

If you leave a flash storage device for a long time without power, how long does it usually take for the stored electrical charges to degrade and data to be lost?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2018 02:15 AM PST

A flash storage device stores data as electrical charges trapped between transistors (essentially microscopic capacitors), but no circuit is perfect and the charges will eventually dissipate. So say you have some data on a flash drive or SD card, and it is left in a room with moderate temperature without power, about how long would it take for the charges to degrade to a point where the data is permanently unreadable?

What factors affect the length of time? Will all of the cells on the chip lose its charge at around the same time or will some stay charged significantly longer than others, leading to certain files becoming unreadable before others? Finally, is there a difference between the data degradation times of different storage formats, like flash drive, SD card, and SSD?
