    Weekly "anything goes" thread!

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 04:41 AM PST

Here's your chance to talk about whatever!

Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread.

Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed.

Use the Google Assistant to Navigate Through App

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 06:42 AM PST

For two days I am researching the Google Assistant, but after these two days I am confused. It seems like the previous tutorials where more about creating an app for the Google Assistant, but I would like to do the opposite.

I already have a running app, and I would like to add the possibility to navigate through the app with voice commands that are handled by the Google Assistant.

I got lost in my searches. Does anyone have a starting point for me to achieve my goal? Which points could be useful for me?

    • Faster DB via Write Ahead Logging
    • Guava support

Note that this version defaults to WAL if device is 16+ and it is not a low memory device. Switching to WAL is known to be causing problems for devs but we believe Room's abstraction will prevent issues. Please let us know if it has some unexpected side effects.

We've also changed how we read method parameter names in Kotlin so that we can support classes that live in dependency modules. Please report any issues you recognize.

    Privacy policies for SDKs

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 09:36 AM PST

I am writing a simple privacy policy for my app. The app doesn't collect any personal data but it's using Crashlytics and Flurry Analytics and I should put links to privacy policies for the Android SDKs for these services.

However, I can only find policies for the whole Crashlytics and Flurry services: the policies mention cookies and IP addresses, their e-mail service policy (for Yahoo that owns Flurry), accounts and logins etc. None of the above is relevant to my mobile app. These are privacy policies for me, the developer using these services, not for the users of my app who interact with these services only via the SDKs embedded in my app.

I know that nobody reads these policies and the policies of other apps that I have seen just link to the general Crashlytics and Yahoo's privacy policies. And I will most likely do the same thing.

But I am wondering if there actually are policies describing data collection of the SDKs.

Does everyone here use cert pinning?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 06:29 AM PST

I've been using some big name apps and not everyone uses cert pinning. I think instagram does, but I don't think any of squares products implement it.

    Let's discuss!

Would anybody be interested in a library to make implementing snapcode-like tags easier?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 10:37 PM PST

I am trying to gauge interest for an idea of mine. I want to make a tool that makes it easier for developers to create branded scannable tags for their app. Think snapcodes, spotifycodes, etc. This tool would be quite an undertaking to build so I want to see if there is any interest before dumping a bunch of time into it.

I threw together a landing page for the idea here that has a bit more detailed information about my thoughts.

Is this something that any of you would see yourselves using?

Phone charging cables: should all usb charging cable also be able to sync your device to your computer?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 07:11 AM PST

I am trying to synch my galaxy phone to my laptop. I have a worn out original usb cable that came with the phone. Phone charging cables: should all usb charging cable also be able to sync your device to your computer? Or do I need special cables that allow to charge and sync? Would the following work on my galaxy s4 for data syncing?
