    Need laptop recommendations!

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 02:13 PM PST

So I need to buy a new laptop and I'm not sure what to look for . I don't know much about computers so any tips/recommendations are welcome. I'd like to stay away from Apple products but other than that, I'm open to any brands and prices.

I'm a student so I need one with a lot of memory and not too big or heavy. Thanks!

Asus flip S (aka ASUS Q325UA) battery upgrade?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:11 PM PST

I recently bought the best buy version of Flip S which comes with an 8th gen i7, 16 gbs of RAM, 512 gb SSD and an underwhelming battery life.

I love the laptop in almost every way, except for the battery life which is average at best. The device uses a 39 wh, 2 cell battery according to Asus.

My question is, is there anyway for me to upgrade the battery so I can get an extra ~3 hours of battery life out of the device?

Looking for a laptop similar to the Acer Triton 700 or Asus ROG Zephyrus with front shifted keyboard

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 01:03 PM PST

I'm looking for a mid tier gaming laptop under $1500 US that has a keyboard shifted to the front like the two that I listed. Are there any out there? The only other machine I've found with this feature is the Acer Aspire R7. Specs are negotiable.

Gigabyte Aero 15x out of stock everywhere?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 12:28 PM PST

As the title said, it's out of stock or unavailable in 90% of stores I see. Is this the world's favourite laptop or am I missing something super obvious? Did gigabyte stop producing it? I can't find any shop in the UK that is selling it

Development, Video, Photo Editing, Take Anywhere, 2 in 1. Battery life and Form factor are crucial

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 11:33 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    0-2000 USD

    USA (SF)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Battery life and touch screen with stylus. Money not a huge issue.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very. I am open from 10-15 inch but I would prefer as thin and light as possible.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Definitely not Chrome OS. Already have a MBPr2013. Would be using this mainly in windows or linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 preferred, but not that picky.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

At the same time: Fusion 360, Multisim, MS Visual Studio, 20-100 Tabs in Chrome Games: Have a desktop for games I cant run on the laptop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

League at high and over 60 FPS is my only real gaming req for this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Must have a multitouch trackpad, must have high build quality, must have a keyboard on par with macbooks or thinkpads. Optical drive not preferred. Touchscreen welcomed/preferred.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Main desktop PC is very powerful and I have ample network storage so local storage capacity is not as important.

Need advice for a 12"-14" (budget less than 1500€)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 03:53 AM PST

I didn't used the form because miss the question that I need and added useless question.

I'm searching a laptop with those specs (1-5 mandatory, 6-8 optional):

    1) 12"-14", however my preference is for a 13.3" screen

    2) i7 8550 + mx150 or ryzen 2700u

    3) 16gb ram

    4) thunderbolt 3

    5) budget less than 1500€

    6) lightweight

    7) I prefer italian keyboard, however I can survive to an US one

    8) I prefer a two-keys touchpad, but a mac style is still acceptable

I found only the new Mi Notebook Air 13.3 (with the 16gb version preorderable only on a single site).

    Did anyone know an alternative?

    Thanks! :)

Unhappy with my whole tech situation, time for an upgrade?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2018 08:47 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm currently a bit unhappy with my computer situation.

    Here's all the gear I have: - Thinkpad T440s (i5, 256 GB, FHD, LTE) - Macbook 12 2015 - iPhone 6s - mechanical keyboard, Logitech BT mouse, Lenovo USB-C monitor - iPad Pro 9.7

Because I hate typing on the flimsy shitty Macbook keyboard, the computer pretty much never leaves the desk and is always connected to the USB-C monitor.

I adore the Thinkpad and I want to continue using it.

The issue is that I still need to be able to use a Mac from time to time, but the performance doesn't matter that much. I also want to be able to game a bit, which right now I can't.

The obvious answer would be a desktop PC / hackintosh, but I move around so much that I can barely justify owning the monitor on my desk, let alone a desktop PC. Not even an ITX one.

My use case is 80% development (Unity, Android Studio, XCode, Python web backend), 10% music production, 10% gaming / media consumption.

I would love to have some kind of 15" laptop for around the house, maybe a Mac mini...I want to sell the 12" Macbook (terrible computer) and I'm willing to add like 1k Euros.

What would you do in my situation?

Looking for something comparable to or better than the dell XPS 15 9550

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 07:30 PM PST

I've pretty much copied the suggestion form from r/SuggestALaptop. I'm looking to replace my Dell XPS 15 9950 after the motherboard failed only a year and a half in. I'd like something with comparable specs and that costs no more that $2200 USD. Any help would be much appreciated!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $2200 or less, purchasing in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer to have a laptop with a decent battery life and good specs for the money. I was using a Dell XPS 15 9550 and would like something comparable, but that is more reliable.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is very important to me. I'm a college student, so I'll be carrying the laptop around quite a bit.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is a requirement.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer a 15" screen.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using CAD software and occasionally playing games. I use AutoCAD very frequently and as far as games go, things like Bioshock Infinite, Civ 5, and The Long Dark.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Going to be honest, I'm not familiar enough with these types of things to specify what settings beyond saying that I'd like to play most games with their setting on High Quality.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is extremely important to me. As I said above, I was using a Dell XPS 15 9550, but the motherboard failed on me just a few days ago. It was only a year and a half old, so I would really like to avoid this happening so soon with my next laptop. A SSD would be great, maybe 512GB or 1TB if possible. HDMI is also pretty important. I'd also like to have a High res screen, discrete graphics, and a good input devices. A touchscreen would be nice, but it definitely isn't necessary.

Acer Aspire e15 ($350 model) running extremely slow?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 08:47 PM PST

I mean I know it's a $350 laptop and I'm running 6 Mbps internet speed, but a 3 hour ETA to download Google chrome browser seems outlandish. Anything else I try to download seems to not progress. Is there a common issue with this or configuration I need to set? Sorry if this is the wrong place.

    Lenovo 720s 14" (i7, MX150) thermals?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:42 PM PST

What are the thermals and fan noise like on this laptop?

I'm coming from a XPS15 9560 with i7(7700HQ, GTX1050) and the noise on it isn't that much of an issue for me thought kinda loud (compared to my silent desktop), but it does throttle somewhat overtime and temps are kinda high for my liking.

I plan to use it for school (digital media, premier and after effects, probably not super heavy loads with either program), and playing some Fortnite/League of Legends.

I just want to know what the noise is like and if there's any throttling. If I got, I would repaste with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

Also, can you charge via USB-C?

New Laptop: Software Developer (XPS 15 or Macbook Pro)

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 09:18 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$2000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, i7 Processor, at least 8 GB of memory (prefer 16), great resolution, good build, and speced to have a good life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important. I am looking at laptops that have similar form factors such as the XPS 15 or Macbook Pro. I want something slimmer and travels well.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. This is where I am getting hung up. I have been a Windows person my entire life. My work involves C#/.NET tech stack, I have my own PC build, but I would like a portable machine I could do my own development projects. If weren't for Unix, I would stick with windows and get the XPS but I feel compelled to get a Macbook so I always have the option to develop for Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Programming. Mostly with VS and VS Code but I would like to do my own contractor work. Possibly with Mac devices as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ability to drive at least 2 external 4K monitors, preferably 3. Good quality build. A touch screen would be nice but it is not a deal breaker. i7 processor. At LEAST 8 GB of memory, prefer 16. Good display, 4K is nice but I do like the Macbook Pro display as well. I am used to mechanical keyboards so I would prefer nothing to mushy.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a home built PC I use for work and gaming. My main job I work with C# and .NET so Microsoft makes sense. But for my personal projects and ambition to do more Mac development I feel compelled to go MacBook.

What should I look for when choosing a laptop to replace desktop

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:21 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1500-2000 USD maybe a bit more or but not much. Taiwan.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer good battery life and good specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Decently important but I'm willing to make a compromise depending on the specs. Current laptop is supposed to be 5.07 lbs for the record.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Linux probably.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm not doing any CAD atm but I need to be able to run CATIA/Solidworks beginning this semester. I use Photoshop and Lightroom atm for photo editing and MATLAB for university uses (signal processing, number crunching, machine learning) is one of the main reasons I need to upgrade.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not too important but running PUBG/LoL at any settings at a stable 60 fps would be nice.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really but a good screen and a build quality that feels reliable would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking mostly for recommendations on what do I actually need to look out for when looking for a laptop since laptops in Taiwan have different models than in USA/other parts of the world but some of them are highly customizable:

Should I go ultrabook or "gaming" laptop (even if my main purpose is not to game on it)?

Should I wait for 8th generation HQ, or take the 7th generation HQ or 8th generation U?

What should I focus on for my purposes: GPU, CPU, RAM?

Is 16gb RAM enough or should I get 32?

Is it realistic to expect to completely substitute my desktop? Reason I want to do so is I'm living abroad and I need to constantly be on the move. For the record I have a desktop right now but it's horribly updated by this point.

And this is the laptop I have right now to compare: http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=281862868214&category=177&pm=1&ds=0&t=1414989259000&ver=0

    Thanks for reading.

    SATA-III vs NVMe PCIe SSD

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 05:28 PM PST

I'm trying to decide which one to go for to upgrade a laptop. I understand that (for the specific laptop model I have in mind) a SATA-III SSD will achieve ~500MB/s read/write speeds, and an NVMe ~1700MB/s.

However, I've read that, although an NVMe will technically improve load and boot times, the OS boot time can be slower overall. This is apparently due to the PCIe interface taking an additional ~10-15secs to intialise.

    Questions:

    1) Is the described boot delay accurate?

    2) Will the same delay occur waking a laptop from sleep?

    3) What about waking from hibernation?

    4) I open/close applications often, load/save/simulate in Matlab a lot, CAD a bit, have 923 Chrome tabs open at any one time, and use speech-to-text software over the top of everything that likes to eat RAM. Read/write speeds aside, will I actually notice a 'real world' difference in performance using an NVMe SSD?

    Thank you!

Laptop model for those interested: Asus UX310UA-FC998R (upgrading to 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD).

    Removing unnecessary programs

    Posted: 15 Feb 2018 04:13 PM PST

    Hello,

I recently bought an HP pavilion and it came preloaded with a bunch of programs. I was wondering which ones are unnecessary and I can unintstall and which ones to keep. I use my computer for Word, the internet, watching movies, and playing the occasional game. Nothing to fancy. Any help would be much appreciated!
