    questions regarding optimize battery usage

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:33 PM PST

My phone: Galaxy S7 (flat, unrooted, Sprint) Would turning this on limit an app's performance? I noticed by default the setting is turned on for the majority of the apps, including quite a number of background services. would disabling optimize battery usage make certain apps or tasks run more efficiently? if so, which background service should not be optimized to ensure performance and function?

EDIT: it's the battery optimization setting for other devices

I can't connect to Cerberus on my Galaxy Tablet S2

I think it has something to do with the battery settings but I've already tinkered with that (turned off battery optimization and app power monitor)

    Anything else I'm missing?

How to get downloaded images from Chrome to show in Gallery app on HTC 628

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:01 PM PST

Up until a few days ago I was able to download images from the Chrome app on my phone and find them in the Downloaded images folder in my Gallery app.

I downloaded about 15 images the other night and assumed that's where they'd be, but when I went to check, I couldn't find them there. I can view them in the actual Downloads folder, but there's no way that I've found to see where they've been saved in my phone.

I've restarted my phone about 6 times, tried downloading other images, restored Chrome to factory settings, tried using a different gallery app, nothing works.

I installed Firefox on my phone and used that and after restarting my phone I found the one photo I'd downloaded using that, but I want to figure out why I'm having the problem to start with.

I noticed that when I went to save the image from the Google search and tapped on the 3 dots which normally give the options to view or save the image, that they didn't give that option, instead I tapped and held on the photo itself and then selected download.

How can I find out where these photos are saved and how to stop this from happening again?

How do I detect remote access and tell what it was used for?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 04:32 PM PST

I mentor a teenager with an old Samsung J3. Her mother thinks I have been inappropriate with her and is using her phone to record me. If I take a look at her phone, how can I detect her mother's remote access and tell what she has used it for? A quick glance in her settings showed that her mother's phone and a pc have accessed the phone recently through Google sync, but is that all it takes? I thought Google only provided locations. What apps could do this?

Bought a wallet the other day and now it's the only ad that's shown on any app on my phone

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:11 PM PST

Hopefully this is the right subreddit for this question. I recently ordered a wallet online (The Ridge if anyone's curious) and now my phone (Pixel 2) is littered with ads for it. It's not an exaggeration that 90+% of the time an ad is shown in an app, it's for the wallet.

On Facebook and Instagram I at least had the option to stop showing those particular ads, but it's in my Reddit app, my Imgur app, my internet and any other app that has ads. It's a weird annoyance because it's not like I'm seeing more ads than I already was, just that every ad I see now is the same one which is more annoying.

So if anyone has some way I can get my phone in general to stop throwing this wallet in my face, especially when I've already flippin' ordered one, that'd be wonderful.

Moto Z Play, google app crashes whenever I try to use it

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:06 PM PST

Whenever I go to the home screen on my Moto Z Play (I have the soak test for Oreo downloaded), the Google app crashes since it is trying to load Google feed. It also crashes if I press the google app itself. I don't understand why it keeps on crashing since a couple days ago I was still on the soak test for Oreo and everything was stable. Additionally though, if my phone is locked and I press the power button, it takes 10 seconds for the lock screen to come up. It's very annoying and I have to unlock my phone to see notifications if the Moto display doesn't come up. Any suggestions on how to fix these issues? I'm really clueless.

App for scanning a word through the camera to receive the definition?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:02 PM PST

An icon appeared and I don't know why. I t doesn't do anything.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 04:03 PM PST

I was fiddling around learning my new phone and now THIS ICON appeared in the status bar. All it does if I press it is it makes the message "The contact doesn't exist" appear briefly on the screen.

What did I do to cause this? How can I get rid of this?

    Thanks

    WiFi Teather old device

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:27 PM PST

So I've got an old android phone with a version of android that only lets you teather data, not WiFi. I'd like to be able to use the phone as an always-on device which just teathers my home WiFi (specifically to create a separate instance of the network to stop housemates messing with my smart devices.) Obviously I could go buy a WiFi repeater but I was wondering if there's any modded firmware or app which would allow me to make the device just a wifi-teatherer?

Gmail App Help (on my Samsung S6)?! Only receiving emails from 2012!!

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:06 PM PST

Today I finally set up my gmail account in the gmail app on my Samsung S6. I signed into my gmail account in the app and enabled all sync settings ("Auto sync" and "sync every 15 minutes"). However, the only emails that are showing up in the app are from 2012 (...no recent ones are showing up?!)... Please help! I have gone to many Samsung and Android forums and followed their advice to help me receive all emails (instead of just ones pre-2012), but none of those fixes help. I have rebooted my phone, deleted & reinstalled the app, and even cleared all cache/data.

[LineageOS] Is there any way to retrieve the encryption master key on Android?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:05 PM PST

Basically, I encrypted my phone, set a 4-number PIN as the password and now I need to decrypt /data so I can flash something through TWRP (the thing I'm trying to flash requires /data to be mounted). Problem is I think TWRP needs the master key to decrypt, not the user key (master key is derived from user key). Putting the PIN as the password doesn't work, neither does 'default_password'. So how can I find the master key if I know the user key?

Did Netflix update their app and make it less useful?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:30 AM PST

The Android version of the Netflix app (somewhat) recently got updated with YouTube-like controls with a pause button in the middle of the screen, and a double-tap on the left/right side for 10 second rewind/forward, respectively.

When I used the app today, it was back to the tiny pause button in the corner+only 30 second rewind button layout that it previously had. A few of the most recent reviews on the play store also mention this.

I mean, the difference is huge in terms of usability and QOL. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this makes the app frustrating to the point where it's almost not worth having, especially after being spoiled by the better design for a weeks now. 30 seconds is too much, and removing gesture controls like double-taps is just annoying.

Anyone else have a similar problem? I use an S8.

Thinking of getting the Essential Phone, Opinions?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:00 PM PST

Hey everyone, the other day my Moto Z Play's volume down button stopped working and I've been doing research on getting a new phone. The Essential Ph-1 has always intrigued me and still does despite the negative reviews it got when it was first released. If anyone owns/owned the phone. any opinions such as the screen quality, battery life, speed, or anything you feel is important enough to say would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is there a way to add hotmail without the Outlook app?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 01:59 PM PST

I have a Samsung GalaxyJ3. I've had hotmail in the email (along with my gmail and workplace MS Exchange email) on it since last fall, but yesterday, I got some strange security message and the email stopped syncing. The other accounts are fine. I did a google search and finally just removed the email and added it back in - but now, hotmail asks me to either download the Outlook app or use a browser to access this account.

Is this new? Can I not just add hotmail back to my accounts like before?

what are some of the best ways to expand the audio frequency range on android devices? I have noticed that the EQ in the most recent OS caps the upper frequency range at 16000hz, is it possible to expand that up to 23000hz?

    Phones and Cold

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:37 PM PST

It has been very cold lately, the better days around -14°, the worse days -20°C. It is cold! Normally, I carry my phone in a leather belt pouch, but I think it would get too much icy wind, so I'm putting it into a cloth satchel for insulation and then into my pocket, usually the chest pocket, if available on the jacket I choose that day.

So, what if the phone rings when I'm outside? Should I answer in the cold? And, when I come back home, should I use the phone right away or leave it for a while to warm up to room temperature?

    Is Google Photos always online?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 09:34 PM PST

I'm planning on upgrading my phone to the new Pixel 2 XL and I'd like to know if I can either disable the online features of Google Photos or use the apk of my current HTC gallery app. I'm not used to stock Android and while a lot of people don't like duplicate apps, I've always preferred HTC's music and gallery apps. My only issue really is that I don't trust having every photo I take or download floating around online in Google's servers. It's not that I don't trust Google, I'd just like to keep that bit of privacy. I have Photos disabled on my current phone and I don't want to launch it in fear that it will try to upload my photos as soon as I do because that happened with a previous phone of mine. Is there any way to keep my photos offline? This would also apply to my music app, though honestly I just don't like how Play Music looks and I don't stream any of my music.

My HTC One M9 suddenly started slow charging every single time I charge it. Been happening for about 2 weeks. Could a custom rom prevent this?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:18 AM PST

I know the charger is good (20awg) and the usb plug is the official one that came with the phone.

I can't afford a new phone atm and would appreciate any info as to solutions and/or if anyone knows if custom roms can stop the slow charge.

    Thanks.

How can I legally offer services to get money for my rent?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 08:55 PM PST

I have never been in a position like this and it is bringing me down a lot. I had a few mishaps with work the past month and now I am nervous I won't be able to pay my rent on the 1st. Is there anything I can do in less than a week to get the money I need for rent? That is legal-ish.

Which features are still only possible with root?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:59 AM PST

Android is becoming more feature complete and probably less people care to root their devices, but still, which cool things are worth the necessary root?
