Sunday Rant/Rage (Feb 18 2018) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:11 AM PST

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

[DEV] Lean Launcher 0.3.0 has been released, with initial Pixel support

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:45 AM PST

Download link: Download Lean Launcher 0.3.0 here!

IMPORTANT NOTE: signing keys have been changed for this release, this means that unfortunately, any previous versions have to be uninstalled before installing version 0.3.0. This had to be done in preparation for the Play Store release. The reason debug builds have this new signing key is both for convenience and security.

Pixel users: install the play variant, but please note, "At A Glance" will NOT WORK, and currently there is no way to make it work.

Non-Pixel users: install the aosp variant, both "Google Now" and "At A Glance" should work correctly.

    Changelog

    • fix typo: "Transparent Status Bar" to "Transparent Navigation Bar"
    • add option to change icon sizes (-25, -10, 0, +10, +25% modifiers)
    • create Play configuration, which should be installable on Pixels
    • companion apps are not yet ready, no actual Play Store release until than, only the same, debug type release

    Full feature list

Everything, that is available in Rootless Pixel Launcher, with some added options, such as:

    • option to hide "At A Glance"
    • option to hide bottom search bar on your home screen
    • option for extra bottom padding, some devices may need it when bottom search bar is hidden
    • option to force colored G icon on bottom search bar
    • option to hide app search bar at the top of your app drawer
    • option to disable the spring effect when over scrolling your app drawer
    • option to make status bar transparent
    • option to lock your desktop, to prevent accidental changes (and to be able to use shortcuts better)
    • double tap to lock on home screen, this is a secure lock, meaning you will need to provide PIN if you have set it up, fingerprint is not enough
    • option to force dark or light theme, not just based on your wallpaper
    • option to change default grid options (rows, column, hotseat icons, from 3 up to 7)
    • option to change icon size (-25%, -10%, 0%, +10%, +25% modifiers)
    • hide apps from your drawer (searching apps works for hidden apps as well)

Phone/Tech Enthusiasts, what are your strategies for purchasing new phones and saving the most money in the process?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:54 PM PST

I think I'll always have an iPhone as my main device, but I've been really badly wanting to try out some Android phones, specifically the Pixel 2 XL, Note 8, and OnePlus 5T. I'm just getting tired of Apple limitations (Siri, being locked into the ecosystem) and feel the need to try out something different. However, I can't even justify upgrading my phone every year, so I don't know how I'd be able to justify having two phones at once or buying a phone just to try out for a few months and then lose hundreds of dollars on it after selling it.

Those of you that change phones often, what are your strategies for doing it while saving the most money?

Before, it would always ask "do you want to save this?" And you had to say yes again to save, now it doesn't do that anymore!

Having fun with Google Assistant and Alarm labels

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:43 AM PST

So I just found out if I make an alarm with a label that has a swear word, google assistant will bleep it out when reading it back to me. I have been having so much fun with this since. It doesn't work for long labels, so keep things short.

    S8/S9 size

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:38 PM PST

Upgrading to S9 this year from s6, but unsure whether to go for the regular or the plus. The fact that the reg s9 is thinner than my s6 kinda scares me because this is already plenty thin, but the .7 in extra in height is perfect, whereas s9 seems good thickness but 6.2 in height is something im unsure of. For those who have s8 or really any galaxy phone, what model have you got and what do you think of the size? Id especially like to hear from those with average hand size using a plus in how it is in daily and more casual use like using it laying on your side in bed

Fix for Google Play Services battery drain

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 02:26 PM PST

I have been searching all over the internet, went into so much trouble to look into how to resolve the issue with google play services and what kind of solutions you can use to fix the issue, I have watched plenty of videos, looked at so many forums, tried lots of suggestions on forums, factory reset my device, flashed my device with stock firmware, got Samsung themselves to flash my device and the problem still persists, so I did so many things and all of them didn't work. I finally found a solution that works for me trust me when I say this I have been looking for the past month for ways to fix this and I have fixed it.

You don't need any paid apps or anything of the sort to do this, you don't need Root for this or any customer software.

    1) You are going to need to disable Google Play Services on your device, through settings>Apps > Google Play Services.

If you are on Android 7.0+ like me your device will come up and tell you that you have to be a device administrator or something along the lines. If it does click onto Device Administrators on the bottom left then untick "Find My Phone" and then you will be able to disable it Google Play Services (Don't know why but this disables the admin for google play services).

*Warning when you disable Google Play Services you may encounter errors, you may encounter glitches and you will get notifications warning you saying that apps won't work without play services don't worry as you are just reinstalling it later *

    2) Once Google Play Services is disabled, go to the top right there will be the 3 dots click that and then click Uninstall Updates and it will factory reset play services.

Dont worry you wont lose any personal data or anything you will just need to sign back into your account again later once you install the apk and everything will be back to normal.

    3) Once you factory reset Google Play services you are going to want to download the latest version of Google Play store if you aren't on the latest version. The reason why I say this is because my device, families devices and friends devices their Google Play store was saying that they were on the latest update when in fact they were 3 updates behind.

You can check what version of Google Play Services you are currently on by: Opening Google Play Store > Clicking the 3 Lines on the top left > Scroll to the bottom where it says "Settings" > Click on the settings and then scroll to the bottom of settings and then you will be able to see your version.

To check for the latest version of Google Play Store go to here: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-store/

If you aren't on the latest version of Google Play Services then you will need to download the latest one on this site (Don't worry this site doesn't have any viruses or anything like ) I take no responsibility in you downloading the incorrect files etc.

Once you have the APK downloaded in order to install an APK off the internet you will need to go to Security and Settings and then click on > Allow Unknown Applications (This needs to be on to install apps that are outside of the google play store)

If you are on the latest version then don't bother with that step.

    4) Once you have installed your version of Google Play Store you will need to go to Google Play Store > Settings > Auto Update > Never Automatically Update (Reason for this is because you don't want google play services to auto update to the latest version).

    5) Now onto Downloading Google Play Services, we are basically going to downgrade our version of Google Play services, the reason for this is because the later versions of Google Play Services (The one you are currently on which is why you are here on this subreddit is because the battery issues) have MASSIVE battery drain which makes the device, lag, overheat and battery drain. The main reason why the older version will stop this is because it doesn't have the bug the latest version does or it doesn't have the updated code they included but whatever Google did it made the battery life for any phone SHIT.

I have downloaded the November 2017 Google Play Services update as this version doesn't have any of the problems that the 2018 versions do.

The version number for the 2018 version I was on was 11.9.76 The older version for November 2017 which I am now using is 11.7.46

You can download any version of the Play Services here: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-services/

For reasons below, I cant specifically tell you what versions to download: I don't know what Version of Android you are running, I don't know what CPU architecture you are running or the DPI of your device. In order for you to know this information you can download an app called "CPU-Z" this will tell you about what version of android and Info about your CPU.

    6) Once you install/ download Google Play Services you will get notification saying to update Google Play Services but ignore that and remove the notification as you don't want to get it up to date until Google fix the issue. As you changed the settings in Google Play Store Play Services wont get updated. :D

Good Luck !!! I hope this fixed your Google Play Services battery drain if you have any questions or feedback feel free to ask me, i'll try my best to answer but I may not being able to answer it etc
