Is it possible to do a clean install of Windows 10 on an M.2 SSD while logged into an already running Windows 10?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 02:49 AM PST

Hi there. Basically I am already logged into my computer and would like to take the fresh ISO of Windows 10 I have and install it to a M.2 SSD I have. Then I would use that as my primary drive. Is this possible? I'm sorry if this is confusing to you, I tend to do that sometimes. Thank you in advance.

Hi there, as mentioned in the title, my desktop was powered down for an extended period of time and when I went to use it today, I got an error stating "A required device isn't connected.

I rebooted into the BIOS and saw my SSD Boot Drive wasn't showing up. After doing some research I performed the power cycle method outlined in this post but it's still not working.

As I type this I'm going to try the alternative method mentioned in that post, but I have low expectations.

Has anyone experienced this before/know how to fix it?

a few days ago the laptop (Windows 10) began running slowly. 2 days ago it stopped working. When I turn it on it gets to the log-in screen but just sits there loading forever. At some point I managed to get into the WinRE area and chose the option to reset the computer while keeping my files. I was on the screen that says "repairing your computer this may take over one hour" for about 8 hours. I went to bed, woke up in the morning and the laptop was off. Now every time I turn it back on it says during booting that it is repairing disk C but it never gets past 7%.So I am curious: Is there any hope for the laptop in general? Is there any hope for recovering files (the most essential files have been backed up to an external hard drive but there are a lot of other things I need still in there).I have no repair disc.

Strange monitor activity in Windows 10

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:08 AM PST

I upgraded to windows 10 a couple of weeks ago and I really like it. I also bought a new monitor, however Windows 10 really does not seem to like it.

The monitor I bought is a BenQ XL2411P.

My second monitor is a old HPx22LED, have not got model atm.

So when I first installed windows it detected my BenQ but would not send a signal to it. I would tell it to extend displays and it just did nothing, telling me:

    https://i.imgur.com/nV2qNd1.png

So I installed new drivers through Geforce experience. Low and behold after doing this I was able to extend the displays and use my dual screens as intended.

However it seems now that if there is any update to Windows or I install new drivers or update them, when I restart my PC i have to go through the same problem each time, unable to use dual screen and having to reinstall my drivers for it to work.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

EDIT: So this last time the behaviour was a little different so I will explain. I signed out of my PC last night and when I woke up this morning both monitors were dead and would not respond. I had to manual power off pulling the plug out. When I restarted it told me windows is configuring updates, never seen that before. Then the usual problem, unable to extend screens or even do anything, my main screen does not receive an input.

I reinstalled drivers and nothing happens this time, still will not extend display or even send a signal to it (though it does detect it). Reinstalled again, nothing. Then I restarted. Booted up, still only one screen, but I selected 'duplicate screen' and it worked. I selected extend and it works.

I have no idea what is going on, but it is very annoying.

I'm scared that someone who death threatened me may be trying to hack my Hotmail accounts and find me. Please help.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:08 PM PST

Apologies in advance since this is gonna be long and my English isn't amazing. In November 2016 I was heavily threatened by a person on WhatsApp who had tried to kill a man years ago and been in jail for attempted murder. I didn't know him in person, so he only had my first name and my phone number. He told me he would track and find me.

I changed my number and tried to delete everything he could use to find me with the info he had. Two months later I realized you could still search my old number in Skype and find my account and full name.

In June 2017, my Skype account was hacked. I wasn't scared at first because I thought it was some random hacker. I checked the activity log of the Hotmail account the Skype account was linked to and saw an Incorrect Login notification from China one hour after they got into my Skype, so I think it's safe to asume whoever hacked my Skype account got my email from it and tried to hack it too. Let's call this Hotmail account Account 1.

I then checked another Hotmail account I have (we'll call it Account 2) and saw a lot of Automatic Sync notifications from different countries dating back to mid-May. There were likely more before but you can only see the last month's log. I started checking both accounts' activity logs daily. From mid-June to mid-July there were a lot of Incorrect Logins in both accounts, along with more Automatic Syncs in Account 2. I'll break the incorrect logins down here:

    • 7 June / China / Account 1 / Windows
    • 13 June / China / Account 2 / Windows
    • 14 June / Egypt / Account 2 / Linux
    • 15 June / China / Account 2 / Windows
    • 18 June / Pakistan / Account 1 / Windows
    • 18 June / Bahrain / Account 1 / Windows
    • 21 June / China / Account 2 / Windows
    • 23 June / South Korea / Account 1 / Mac
    • 28 June / Algeria / Account 2 / Mac
    • 29 June / Egypt / Account 2 / Mac
    • 3 July / Egypt / Account 1 (Linux)
    • 9 July / Algeria / Account 2 (Linux)
    • 10 July / Algeria / Account 2 (Windows)
    • 13 July / Vietnam / Account 1 (Linux)

After this the Incorrect Logins stopped on both accounts, but the Automatic Syncs kept going on Account 2. I see a lot of patterns in these Incorrect Login notificacions that make me think they come from the same source:

    • They started and ended at around the same date in both accounts.
    • Some consecutive attempts come from the same country in one account and then the other (7 June and 7 June, 29 June and 3 July). I guess this means they come from the same proxy/VPN thing.
    • Same as above but with Linux and Mac (23 June and 28 June, 3 July and 9 July).
    • They used Firefox on both accounts (although this wouldn't be a weird coincidence).

The thing is, Account 2 is not linked to my Skype account or to Account 1 in any way, so I can't help but think that a random hacker couldn't have gotten both my Skype account and Hotmail's Account 2. I'm really scared and obsessed that the guy who threatened me may be behind this and is trying to hack my Hotmail account to check my emails and get my address from them. I know it sounds really crazy but it's the only explanation I can see.

This wouldn't be impossible as he could get my full name from Skype and then use it to find Account 2. I tried to do it myself and wasn't able to, but I was able to do the opposite (find my full name using Account 2's email).

I need either a reasoning that makes me think the attempts in both accounts don't come from the same source or one that explains how a random hacker could have gotten both my Skype account and Account 2 (other that pure coincidence, which I find incredibly unlikely, or a keylogger, which I have ruled out for some reasons).

Please help me if you can. I'm deeply obsessed with this and haven't been able to go outside by myself for almost a year. Also, if you can tell me other subreddits where I can post this it would be helpful.

    Thanks!

Possible bad CPU/RAM, KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE on boot.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:56 AM PST

    TLDR AT BOTTOM

I've put together a home home server out of old parts. An i5, GA P55A UD3 motherboard and 2x4G 1600MHz DDR3 Kingston sticks.

The i5 and board are mine, the RAM is from a friend. Honestly, neither of us can recall the state of this stuff when we last used it a few years ago, but it all looks fine and has been stored properly.

It can POST, see the memory (seemingly only at 1333) and all drives, push video out HDMI on the GTX760 in the PCIe slot.

There are 4 drives in there, two blank, one mechanical with a fresh Win10x64 LTSB install (CPU may be 32bit? might be problem?), and one SSD with a mangled version of the same version of windows on it (Installed Win10 and then decided to use it for pfSense and then realized how dumb that was)

I have a bootable USB with the Win10x64 LTSB on it that I have installed on many devices so far successfully - I know it works. Even when booting from that, it boots into the black screen with blue windows logo for about 10 seconds, and then bluescreens with the KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE error.

I have updated BIOS, and loaded failsafe.

I attempted running memtext86 off a memstick, which crashed and rebooted after about 5 seconds interestingly. Cant find anything about this online.

I have tried removing all but one drive, none of them work. Tried with no ram and ram in different slots, same problem. Recovery Drive doesn't work. Cant try without GPU because no MOBO video port.

I am trying to put in RAM from my own machine to test now. I will also try loading a basic Ubuntu live CD to see if that is stable, but considering that I can't load memtest86 or even get into the Windows bootable installer, I am not hopeful.

Please, any help. I can give more info. I am not tech illiterate.

TL;DR - Cant boot new machine built out of hand me downs. Tried many things, not sure what's broken.

    Description of problem

Alright, so, I was trying to get a controller working with MGS 1, I had heard of some "Pinnacle Game Profiler", at first, it seemed fishy, but after a quick search, most people said it was safe.So I went ahead and executed it, after a while, some random Firefox tab opens up (I don't even have firefox installed) and redirects to some porn sites. I immediately pull up Task Manager and close it up.Now, I MalwareBytes had advised me that the file was unsafe, however, many users and the site itself said it would bring up a False Positive. Some users even claimed that after some thorough cleaning, that it was indeed a False positive. So I executed the file anyway. So, after closing it up, I deleted the file, and tried a system restore, couldn't get it working, because of MalwareBytes, however, the computer restarted, and when I was at the desktop, the firefox tab opened up again, I restarted a few mor times to verify this. In the task manager it goes from Apps to Background Processes, I opened the file location, which pointed to a file with a Firefox logo called "update", I installed AdwCleaner, which detected nothing, then I tried scanning the file with MalwareBytes, still nothing. This worries me. The file was in a "ComObj" folder inside AppData\Roaming\, I decided to remove the entire folder and delete it.I restarted and to my relief, the pop-ups were gone. However, I am still fearful. Since AdwCleaner nor MalwareBytes could not even detect the thing, how am I supposed to know if this is truly gone or not?Any Advice?

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

    1. Didn't go through with the installation, as a matter of fact, I couldn't, the app never continued, as soon as the Firefox Tab opened, I closed it up, deleted the whole thing. 2. Used AdwCleaner to no avail.3. Deleted the file that was apparently producing this pop-up.

[PC][Battlefield 4] Mouse and Keyboard don't work, unable to play

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:51 AM PST

When I launch the game and get to the menu, I can't do anything. Mouse and keyboard do not do anything in the menu. Totally unresponsive. However, I am able to Alt+F4 and close the game -_-

I am able to use my controller fully, though. Both in the menu and in game. Unplugging it, or starting the game with it disconnected have no effect. I usually have my controller plugged in while playing, as I swap to it when I pilot any air vehicle.

This is the only game that I have this issue with.

    Troubleshooting I've tried:

    *Reinstalling

    *Repair Game

    *Reinstall Origin

*Turning off Origin overlay (and all other overlays)

    *Deleting files in Documents\Battlefield 4\settings

    *Restarting my PC

    *Not running NVidia GeForce Experience/Shadowplay

    *Updating Drivers

    *Running DxDiag

    My Specs

    *ASUS Maximus VIII Formula Z170

    *i7-6700K

    *EVGA Superclocked 980Ti 6GB

    *32GB HyperX Fury 2666MHz RAM

*500GB 960 EVO NVMe SSD (boot drive)

*480GB HyperX Predator PCIe SSD (game location)

    *Windows 10 Pro Build 16299

Computer stopped detecting my mouse randomly

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:45 AM PST

I was using my computer last night when the mouse icon just disappeared. I couldn't get it to reappear so I reset the computer and tried again. Nothing. I re-inserted the USB in every port on my motherboard, case and keyboard-6 ports total. Nothing. The mouse (Razer Deathadder) still lights up and glows so that means it's getting power. I tried using another mouse and that wouldn't appear either. I used the keyboard to navigate to mouse settings and noticed the mouse settings weren't detecting any kind of device. Usually on Windows 10, the mouse settings have a page for device info and settings on the far right of the mouse options window. Mine doesnt. This leads me to believe the computer stopped detecting the mouse completely. I don't think it's a motherboard port issue because no other ports on my keyboard and case would work and I just replaced the motherboard a month or two ago for faulty peripheral ports. It's a brand new board that's barely been used so far (H170 Pro gaming). Any idea what's going on and how i can fix it? I can't take screenshots to post here since I can't navigate the screen so my evidence and clue posting abilities are extremely limited. I'm running Windows 10.

    USB Mouse/keyboard randomly stop working

    Posted: 19 Feb 2018 03:06 AM PST

OK; my dude downloaded a virus. I've tried to remove it, and done google searches, but I'm stumped.

Computer Type: Essentio CM6850 (Box from Best Buy, 2012) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 530 (ASUStek native) CPU: Intel Core i7 2600 @ 3.4 GHz (Sandy Bridge) Motherboard: ASUSTeK CM6850 RAM: 12.0 GB DDR3 (668 MHz) OS: Windows 10 Home x64 GPU Drivers: Chipset Drivers: Background Applications: N/A- fresh install

Describe Issue: My SO got on the PC, and ended up downloading that "your computer has been compromised by Microsoft" or whatever virus. (I know, I know... He thought he was helping!)

Now, my USB Keyboard/mouse cease to operate after ~1 minute to 15 minutes of use. USB only- old PS/2 keyboard still functions fine.

Troubleshooting: Downloaded, purchased, ran: IOBit Advanced System Care, Bitdefender Engine (Malware Fighter 4 Pro), Malwarebytes(free), CCleaner. Uninstalled/reinstalled drivers Reset Windows (keeping personal files) Flashed BIOS (506(?) to 1301) Reset Windows (dropped files, but didn't wipe HDs)

I've had about 4 weeks of PC Basics & Repair. I'm not stupid, just learning & inexperienced. I'm not entirely sure what else I need to do from here.

Some thoughts I have: I noticed that my power button is still set to "hibernate" after the clean install of Windows X. (Reset, I should say. Not really reinstall...?)

So, some settings aren't being refreshed properly. Should I build a bootdisk/USB for Windows X and do a complete, fresh install? Or are those settings in the BIOS/firmware?

I don't know what to do at this point, and it's really, really getting frustrating. Please help?

What are prefetch files in Windows and what information do they contain? Do they contain sensitive information?

My question is basically in the title. What are prefetch files in Windows and what information do they contain? Is any of the information in a prefetch file considered potentially "sensitive"? For example, does the prefetch file for a browser contain what webapges were viewed, even briefly as the browser is being used? If I try to hit Next and install the update, it goes to "Just a moment..." and then restarts back to the PC restart screen I was just at.

    When this issue began

    1-2 days ago

    Recurring issue

    Yes

    Date of purchase

    N/A

    Under Warranty

    No

    Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

    1. Get a Windows 1709 media drive
    2. Install Windows 10 1709
    3. Once the computer restarts, the setup screen should appear
    4. If it unexpectedly restarts during the install, then the "Why did my PC restart?" screen will appear

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

1 reinstalling 1709 (lead to same loop) 2. installing 1703 (started crashing a while into it) 3. installing 1607 (lead to a "Windows restarted, retry the install" after a Critical_process_died during installation) 4. Using different USB drives and ports for the media 5. Changing the media scheme (NTFS, FAT32, UEFI/CSM, UEFI, GPT/MBR) 6. Plugging in Ethernet connection to try and install the update 7. Unplugging Ethernet

Hello, I have a setup with 6 screens where 3-4 of them needs to run a YouTube video in totally sync.

What can I use to create this?

Don't want cables beside the power cable to the screen.

pGina Login page and unresponsive mouse and keyboard.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:00 PM PST

Okay, so this isn't MY computer, it's one at work. After switching on the monitor it says that Windows is started and shows me a screen that says "pGina Login" and asks for a username and password. My mouse is completely unresponsive so I can't move it to the "Cancel" button on the screen. I attempted to do ANYTHING so I opened the drop menu you can control with your keyboard with a button on the monitor, but that isn't responding either. The computer has been restarted scores of times, unplugged the mouse and keyboard and plugged them into completely different USB openings to no avail and this problem has been going on for over a month. Does anyone know what I should do?

    Kernal power error-41

    Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:11 PM PST

So my pc started a month or two ago getting the kernel power error wheni play PUBG.

So I thought maybe it was poor optimization of the game because that was the only time it happened. But last night I went to play overwatch and its doing it now also. but it only does it in game menus never in a match.

never happens doing or playing anything else.

any help would be greatly apperiacted (I figure it is my power supply)
